I thought I need to learn German in Germany, I started in a language school but after a few years of immersive learning, I realized that I speak North German. More than that, I even could speak Platt Deutsch without knowing it! Guys from the South of Germany explained to me that after a glass of beer.

Imagine how I was surprised. So it actually doesn't matter to "master" the local language of the destination country, just the basic lvl is already good enough. Like you have nothing else to worry about except your language qualification...

Hey, do you have a similar experience?

Learned British English in school for 7 years and had some funny situations with Americans and Australians because of different words for the same things: trousers/pants, autumn/fall, cupboard/closet, lorry/truck and so on.

As a German I can’t believe you learned plattdeutsch accidentally :D but you are lucky; plattdeutsch is one of the coolest German styles. Ever heard someone from south Germany talking or had the pleasure to listen to „Schweizerdeutsch“? That is crazy s**t man.
