“How To Get Fired 101”: Customer Doesn’t Come To Pick Up An Order, The Delivery Driver Keeps The Food

From time to time it’s nice not to cook and worry about the dishes, but to eat out or choose the even lazier option of ordering food to your home. Now almost every restaurant provides the service of delivering food and there is a big variety to choose from on different food delivery apps.

Most people are on the ordering side of the app, but it is interesting to see how it works when you are the one delivering. The most intriguing part, of course, is what happens when a customer doesn’t pick up their order. This TikToker shares that there was a time when she got lucky and was actually allowed to just eat it herself.

More info: TikTok

Woman joked around about eating a customer’s order but didn’t expect people to be so sensitive about it

TikTok user Montero shares a little bit of everything on her account, like the joys of owning a dog, working out, or hopping on TikTok trends. Usually her videos reach several hundred or a few thousand views, but one in particular was seen by over 124k people.

It is an 11-second video showing Montero eating a slice of pizza with a text overlay saying that she was eating a customer’s food after her time for waiting for them ran out as they didn’t come to pick it up. Apparently the customer chose for the food to be handed to them, but didn’t come downstairs to collect it.

In another video, the woman explained that the clip that she showed was just a skit and at that moment when she was filming, she was eating food she bought for herself. However, the story was based on real events.

Montero never specifies what company she works for, but it appears that this company gives the customer three options of delivery and one of them is to be handed the food outside. One time a guy chose this delivery method, but the woman couldn’t get the food delivered.

She later explained that the customer chose the “Hand it to me” delivery but never showed up despite several requests to come outside

She knew that the guy knew she was at his house because she texted him. Also, there was a gate with a code, so he was supposed to either tell her that or come to the gate himself. The customer had 8 minutes to come and collect their order, so Montero contacted him several times and asked him to come outside as that was how he wanted it delivered when he placed the order.

Montero said that she didn’t have a problem with bringing the food upstairs, but the customer never asked and she actually described him as rude and demanding. The woman was just following instructions so she knew she wasn’t doing anything wrong especially after she explained to the customer that he chose this himself and that there was a timer of 8 minutes.

She also mentioned that she wouldn’t have minded going upstairs but that wasn’t what the customer asked

After the 8 minutes ran out and the delivery wasn’t confirmed, the food delivery app specified what needed to be done further. In this particular case, Montero needed to take back the food to the restaurant where she picked it up.

There was probably no use in that food for that restaurant and they would have thrown it away anyway, so they just allowed the courier to keep it, which is nice, because who wouldn’t like to have some free food, especially after dealing with a rude customer?

In the end, policy was for her to bring back the food to the restaurant, but they allowed her to just eat it as they would have thrown it away

After the first video caught people’s attention, they were quite offended as they saw Montero as unprofessional and not doing her job properly. People who have difficulty moving, like pregnant women or disabled people, were confused why she couldn’t have just brought the food upstairs, but as mentioned, the woman explained that the customer chose this delivery method himself.

Among those commenters there were people who were also food delivery drivers and they shared that they would have just left the food at the customer’s door if they were in Montero’s shoes, failing to realize that different companies have different policies.

In a different video she touched upon angry people who used her as an example of why they don’t tip delivery drivers

Because there was such a negative reaction, with people saying that they won’t tip delivery drivers as they all have such attitudes, Montero took the chance to touch on this subject.

She explained that delivery drivers know if they’re going to get tipped even before accepting an order, so the customer might wait for longer as nobody will want to take that order but when someone will, it will probably be a new employee.

She encourages people to be more compassionate and realize that most of a food deliverer’s money goes to gas and to have in mind that they have to work in every weather condition when it’s not that pleasant to be outside.

She appealed to people’s conscience, pointing out that they don’t earn that much and that they might have to work in harsh weather conditions

Even though a lot of people couldn’t excuse Montero’s behavior at first, as she explained a little bit more about what actually happened, they started to be more understanding and realized that she was just following the rules.

When Bored Panda reached out to Montero, she told us that she actually doesn’t mind different opinions because everyone thinks in a different way, but what was important to her was for people to know the whole truth and not assume things.

Do you think Montero should have just left the food at the customer’s doorstep even though while ordering he chose to have it handed to him downstairs? Do you think that food delivery drivers deserve to be tipped? Let us know your take on the story in the comments!

People have mixed opinions as on one side they believed she should have just left the food at the door and others claimed she was just following company rules

I will NEVER understand the concept of PRE-tipping. A tip is a reward for good service - how can you know if the "service" will be "good" BEFORE IT EVER HAPPENS??? Tips come AFTER the service, NOT before. Otherwise it's called "a wage".

It should be called a delivery fee not a tip. These are 1099 workers so it makes sense that they won't deliver with a low "tip" but it really is not a "tip"

For the drivers whinging on about their tips... stop blaming the customers for your employers poor policies. I'm glad I don't need to use this sort of service. I tip and usually tip well. AFTER I got my service, not as a bribe to get service at all.

Drivers are independent contractors. They don't work for the company, they work for YOU. You pay the company a finders fee to connect you with a driver. The "tip" you pay is the delivery fee to the driver. When you go on vacation, you don't pay the travel agency fees and stiff the hotel. You pay for both services. This is the same system. Tell yourself whatever helps you sleep at night, but anyone not paying the driver for bringing their food is an entitled piece of poo

All these theoretical "What if they can't walk?' as if they wouldn't state that when communicating with the driver. She's not wrong. 8 minutes is generous and literally it's the policy of these apps because, no, you're not gonna waste people's time. The app needs drivers to be free to deliver more stuff, so you're wasting everyone's time and money.

I understand what you are saying but instead of driving off with the food she should just leave it in front of the door and send a message explaining the situation. That's way more considerate than "oh well, too bad, its mine now".

I had this exact problem with a delivery driver. Unfortunately, I was at my door but they were not. I don’t know whose house they were standing in front of while furiously texting that I had to come out and get my food but it wasn’t mine.

I've never done food delivery - is there a way to enter in delivery instructions that go out automatically? My whole street has this problem with Amazon and UPS/FedEx deliveries because it's the historic district and we're not allowed bright porch lights or large house numbers. Soooo many things get delivered to the wrong house - I could see this being a problem with food deliveries.

If you disabled, pregnant or whatnot tell the driver that upon instructions on how/where to leave food . If you too f*****g lazy to come get your food don’t be hating on the driver when they leave with your food. Come on people grow the f**k up

Bold of you to assume all drivers actually read, much less follow, directions. I know some delivery drivers I've dealt with sure don't.

What was she supposed to do, scale the locked gate? Dude was rude and didn't tell the code or come out as instructed. You can't just leave a food order out in the open like that, so heck yeah, free food to compensate for the wasted gas.

I once had an Uber that their previous job was an UberEATS for some ice cream. They couldn't get ahold of the guy, knocked, rang the doorbell, called, no reply. Well, guess what group of people had a couple quarts of free ice cream for their ride home after a concert and beer festival.

I will never use these food apps, I've read so many bad stories about them. From drivers that stalk the customer, to ones who go back and demand more than the 25% tip they were given, to ones that think it's funny to eat or mess with your food. I don't need a $20 big mac anyway.

I'm with you. From the time I saw a guy drinking a customer's shake way before covid started, I said ew no thanks. Plus the food is cold and 5 times the price. I have a friend who drives for a delivery service and he says he makes big bucks and doesn't know why people complain so much - if you don't want to do a job then just don't do it. He doesn't understand the people who do a job and complain the whole time since drivers have the choice on which jobs they select.

Come on people! If you can't bother to understand what the delivery options mean, then you shouldn't even be ordering delivery. Also, you don't get to change your mind after the fact. The driver is literally losing money having to wait for you and then you're a no show. If you choose the wrong option or deliberately change your mind after, that's on you if your food gets tossed or eaten. They are not W2 employees so they don't get paid to sit waiting 8 minutes and then waste more time bringing it to your door when you should have just requested that in the beginning. I know it s*cks to not get your food but please take responsibility for your actions. The ONLY thing I see wrong with what the driver did was to go and publically brag about it.

When you make an order, you enter into a type of contract with the business, and that includes the delivery driver, who is an independent contractor with that business. While their responsibility is to get your food to you quickly as possible, it is incumbent upon you to make sure they understand *before you order* about any difficulties you may have to meet them at the door (broken leg, pregnant, just like other commenters mentioned), and you must choose the most appropriate delivery option. Should the driver not fulfill their side of the agreement, then you have a case. But it sounds like the customer here refused to hold up their end of the agreement, so the driver had every right, per company policy, to keep the order for herself—-since there would also be no cash tip received. These drivers work hard and don’t make much regular pay, so they depend on tips. However, if they can lower their personal grocery bill with free food because some a*****e stiffed them, then good for them!

You're also missing out. I sometimes don't put tips on the bill because I'd rather pay that in cash. If I put it on the bill, you may get all of it or they may take a cut for themselves. If it's on the bill, it has to be reported as wages. If it's on the bill, it may be a while before you get it. What you do with the cash I give you is your business. Get it to me fast enough, and the tip can be huge. I once tipped a grocery delivery driver $40 because she braved a harsh thunderstorm to bring me my stuff after shopping for me. She was like "Now I can get a replacement cord for my son's laptop." I was like..what kind does he have. She told me. My husband was a former computer repair tech. I got boxes of cords. Let her pick out the one he needed. She tried giving me back the cash. Nah...you saved me the trouble of driving in an ugly storm. It's all good.

Maybe we should stop subsidizing bad businesses with tips entirely and force them to pay actual wages instead of relying on customers to spend above and beyond to support their workforce. Sorry sometimes i just say crazy things i guess.

That's the bottom line. Drivers are getting mad at the wrong people. Customers are already paying huge delivery fees so I can see why they're hesitant to offer a huge tip for a $25 Big Mac. If companies just paid a decent set wage, you wouldn't be reading about the food that gets piled up and spoiled because nobody wants to deliver small orders or no tip orders. There's so much waste going on with these delivery apps, something needs to change. A ton of other countries pay servers a decent wage so tipping isn't even a thing.

I’ve ordered food and would ask them to hand it to me and even if I did give a generous tip the driver still didn’t follow instructions completely so my food ends up sitting outside on the ground unbeknownst to me because I didn’t hear a knock or get a phone call for several minutes with flies surrounding it. My hard earned money to treat myself is now wasted. Most times when I tip I tip in cash and not all apps allow you to indicate that is how you want to leave a tip so it’s very stupid of the driver to assume that this type of behavior is acceptable and earns them bragging rights to steal someone else food because the person ordering didn’t “leave a tip” or requested to have their food handed to them with no other special instructions that most ignore anyways. If restaurant waitstaff can’t do this or don’t do this, why would you think you can get away? This lazy and entitlement mentality has got to end

Yeah this whole "tip me before I've even done a single thing" is f*****g ridiculous. If I'm happy with the service you provide I will tip. I'm sure as hell not gonna tip before hand and "hope" one of you entitled a*s drivers decides to take my order. Also I deliver furniture and nobody ever tips me, sometimes have to drive 3 hours to make a drop off. Nobody ever tips me and I can guarantee my job is much more demanding than dropping off McNuggets to some pothead who doesn't wanna tip. "But I drive my own car" yeah you made that choice, nobody forced you do do this, Grow the f**k up. It's not up to me the customer to pay your damn wage. Get a real job and stop complaining "I put a whole cheque in got gas" that's ridiculous as f**k, you getting taken advantage of and you blaming the customer? The thing that sucks is that most drivers do this for extra cash but are getting mad at the customers for not filling out the rest of their paycheck. I get the struggle, I'm a broke college student, but you're getting mad at the wrong people here. Anyone ordering food off of these apps for delivery is also getting f****d over.

This is my story about pre-tipping: I tried. For some reason the tip wasn't added to my card. This meant my food wasn't delivered for quite a while. I was upset, but with the system....anyway, when I finally got my food, I tipped the driver extra and explained the problem. I'd like at least the option to tip in cash, since I've heard so many stories about servers/drivers getting ripped off by companies and the companies can't take the cash!

It seems like the debate here comes from where that meeting threshold is. There's no clear guide (by the company) or consensus on whether "drop it at the door" means at the apartment door itself or the door to the apartment building. Some drivers and patrons mean one, some the other. I'd argue that those specifics need to go in the instructions and if they're not in the instructions then the driver is free to interpret whichever of those they want.

This is standard practice for Deliveroo. They told us we could either eat the undelivered food ourselves or give it to a homeless person. I once got £90 worth of Mexican food and a dozen artisan donuts in the same night- ate like a king for a couple of days. My best haul was £120+ worth of sushi. One time I had 2 undelivered Ben & Jerrys ice-cream so I gave one to my last customer of the night just to be nice.

As far as I can tell, Door Dash shows the tip before it's accepted. That explains why there are long wait times for low tips. Uber Eats doesn't show the amount until after the dropoff, giving you time to adjust the "pre tip" amount. Door Dash should change that aspect of showing the amount prior to accepting a delivery, otherwise people might start using other services.

This will be the death of this delivery style. These people don't have any reason to care if the food is delivered because they don't really work for anyone. So the food is always cold or soggy and they are usually filled with a horrible attitude. And, idiot, a lot of people tip well and IN CASH that is not traced on the app. You would do much better tip wise if you had fast service and took the cash that is probably more than you'd have to claim. Tips in the system you have to report.

Nope, youre wrong about better tips for "being fast." Most of the time its $2-3 and youre on to the next loss. Did uber eats on a motorcycle for half a year or so. Speed never mattered; hello im on a motorcycle so 90-100% of my deliveries were completed early. Did it ever matter, even once? Nope. Not a single person was ever satisfied about the delivery time, enough so that theyd tip more. Big tippers to go restaurants, where they can see their server and understand her/his plithe...

I am a woman who used to deliver for Domino's in a city. I worked full time at night and well into the morning. Alone on deliveries after midnight, I witnessed shootings, car theft, ran into sketchy people, and once even delivered to a home where two dogs killed a kid the day after I was there. Could have been me. I was lucky in that my company's policy was to NEVER go inside anyone's house, although some drivers still did. It doesn't matter who you are, what area you're in, what time of day, etc, it is common sense not to go into a stranger's home alone. It's just not safe, so don't expect it. Tips aren't worth the risk and there is no hazard pay. It doesn't matter if you're genuinely disabled or just lazy/entitled. It's not like we're moving a piano for you, so you can take it from your front door. Get over it.

I tip according to distance, gas prices, weather. They are providing a service and I am using said service. I have had very few problems with delivery for food or shopping. I usually use shipt for shopping/groceries and tip after the fact. But I can tell if the shipt shopper is deligent by the texts on possible switches. As for food delivery, if there is a problem I go to the delivery service. I try to not get all bent about stuff, almost dying four times in a summer changes your attitude.

Let's put it this way. If tipping stops, so will delivery. They use our own vehicles, pay the insurance and get a small reimbursement for the gas. The tips are the only thing that makes the job worth it. If you don't agree with it, get off your a*s and pick it up yourself.

Actually you people that think that any part of the delivery fees to to pizza drivers are dead wrong. Guess your to blind to see that print where it says that right next to the delivery fee. Also if your not going to tip then go get your own food. Minimum wage my a*s. Try $2.00 per delivery is what we are paid. So yes BET we know if you tipped or not. I personally do not care about being a so called top dasher. If your a cheap a*s tipper or a non tippers your food will sit at the restaurant getting cold before they find someone willing to deliver it. Also you guys call it getting good service. Us drivers do NOT make your food, we do not put it in the bags nor is it our job to open the bags and check your food. That is all on the restaurants and you people act like when something is missing or not made that that it is our fault. Guess what??? All we have to do is pick up your food and then deliver it. That is all. Anything else is on the restaurants and yourselves. Not US!!!

I'm guessing it's not all delivery apps but I didnt know that drivers were able to see whether you tip or not. I actually like that. I tip well regardless because I can and I try to help in a small way. And for one app, I get repeat drivers who usually deliver quickly when they see my order because of that. I wonder if it show an average percentage or something.

I'm a Dasher, I always try to accommodate my customers. If I'm at a house and they say hand it to me, are not communicating a place to leave it or coming to the door, I'll leave it anyway and move on. If it's an apartment or a business I won't do that because then anyone could get the food or some janitor will just toss it. In that case, I'll keep it as the app instructs. I've never seen the app say to take it back to the restaurant. I've been doing this for years and I'm pretty certain that's not a thing. The app will instruct you to throw away or keep the food if there isn't an accessible safe place to leave it.

Where I live food delivery people are much much more considerate of the food they carry and also of customers. No one just eats the food you paid for if you're not at the door. I don't order much online these days, but it's always good to know when I do, no one will eat my food that I paid for.

After recent experience with DoorDash, this situation may be more complicated than it sounds. My DoorDash reset my default delivery instructions for an address, like some kind of bug. It changed them the opposite way for me, from "hand it to me" to "leave at door." When I saw the change after receiving the delivery, I set it back to "hand it to me" but the "added details" had reset to something I wrote like a year ago. So it just completely jacked up my delivery options set in the app. That may be the same thing that happened in this situation.

Honestly have to say that I understand her. For me it's also about appreciation of the food and service. If they give you almost 10 min to get your a... out, even notify you, and you still can't bother to... well, let's say that you can't be too hungry, especially if you're rude about it, like this dude seemed to be.

1. She pointed out there was a gate, it needed a code and she was not given a code to enter. She also said the customer was rude. She followed company policy, followed the selected instructions, and y'all s**t on her for it. If you select to have it handed to you get off your a*s and walk to have it handed to you.

I think the commenters missed the fact that she said there was a gate with a code, she was not given this code. If she left it at the gate it would be ruined our in the open(assuming gate means outdoor gate). She also said the customer was rude to her. She's right, if you select the option to have it handed to you, get off your a*s and pick it up.

Couple things. A) As a driver (I am one) I'm pretty sure hand it to me means deliver to door and then knock. Stairs or otherwise. Only time the wait time matters is if they aren't answering door or phone if you're having trouble with the location. So I think she's in the wrong. B) Tips are like 50-60% of my income sadly. I think a different term like priority bid would make more sense. So the higher tip the likelier someone accepts. I'm not pointing any fingers except when I've accepted no-tippers by mistake. Even on high quality service (imo). It's really disheartening. But I will say 95% of the orders with no tip are not worth the time and gas. I think Doordash only pays more if enough drivers decline it I'm not sure. C) These drivers posting these shitty videos hurt our reputation. I've never ate anyone's food either... for any reason...

This is a sensitive issue, maybe she doesn't realize. But a TON of delivery drivers will not bring your food to you when they are supposed to. This is a constant problem with DoorDash. If I order no contact delivery to an apartment, that means leave it at that room's door. It does not mean leave it downstairs at the outside door. DoorDash does let you change the tip after the fact, and I cut it in half every time these lazy idiots do that stuff; but it's way too frequent.

Okay, don't tip beforehand. The tip winds up either being split between everyone, or winds up going to the company. If there's an option for giving your driver a tip, do that. Also, these people being entitled b***h babies are annoying. The pregnant lady going down 8 flights of stairs I can understand, but everyone else? Do you not f*****g understand these people have tough jobs? Meet them where you're supposed to, and get there early. If I'm in a cast and going down a flight or two of stairs, I'm not waiting until they're there to get moving. They're just like anyone else and trying to make a living.

There is another option if you broke your leg or something. You can choose leave at door. Regardless of which option you choose the driver should receive a tip. Gas is expensive and we don't have to take your order. You get to just sit back and wait for someone else to handle everything for you the least you can do is tip.

No, the “Hand It To Me” option means you get out of your vehicle and you take it to your customer’s door and hand it to them. You don’t make them come to your vehicle. The only reason they should ever have to come to you at any entrance if you absolutely can’t get access to that location for some reason (i.e. can’t get buzzed in or something). It’s literally your job to deliver the food directly to them unless they choose otherwise. Even in the event that they don’t meet you within the time limit, I know DoorDash has an option to “leave the order” and take a photo of where it was left. This rarely happened to me when I did DoorDash though. Most people were ready for their food, especially when I was delivering to soldiers. I think I had to leave an order once when someone had bad reception and couldn’t seem to get my messages or calls. I’m unsure if Uber Eats and other apps offer the same thing after their timer is up.

Who would order food to be delivered when 99% of people have zero idea of what 'delivered' means? You deserve to have the money removed from your bank account if your such a shitty employee. I read about these stories all the time, and is the reason I ALWAYS go and pick up my own food. I don't want some entitlwd a*****e of a delivery driver deciding that if I don't answer the door in 5 seconds that I'm not home. I've done this job, and I do it now but for a reputable company, and not some shitty delivery app. If I did half of their c**p I'd be looking for another job. Girl needs to grow up. She has a bad attitude. If she’s an independent contractor who can’t get fired then she should’ve left the food instead of making some big deal of following company rules. Girl can’t even lie right. Maybe the guy didn’t tip and she doesn’t want to admit that’s why she was petty….regretted taking the delivery so punished him because she could? Otherwise man that’s a meal somebody paid for and presumably tipped her b••••a*s to deliver. All that complaining about the price of gas and we’re actually supposed to believe she brought it back to the restaurant? Her antisocial tendencies are why she has a job as a 1099 contractor; hiring her is more liability than anyone needs to risk (especially for unskilled labor).

I deliver for Uber, their base pay sucks 2 dollars. If I don't see a tip included I don't accept the delivery. With gas being $4.39 a gallon I have the right to pick and choose. I spend 48 a day on gas. After delivering from 8 am to 6 pm, I make 138 on average with 48 going to gas. If there is no tip being offered 9 out of 10 times there will not be one added after I deliver. I have tried taking orders without tip before hand offered. Drove 12 to 19 miles and it has taken 30 to 40 minutes for at most 3.89 for the delivery. No thanks. You can get on here all you want and say you tip when delivered, you are 1 out of 10 then.

See, this I get. I hate having my food wait and get cold but its stupid for me to claim that it's the driver's fault because they have to pick and choose based on what's going to keep them afloat. I do think when given the opportunity, you guys should fight hard for a minimum wage but until that opportunity arises, Ill just have to have cold food. It's not my fault, it's not yours, it's Uber's (and the other companies).

I will NEVER understand the concept of PRE-tipping. A tip is a reward for good service - how can you know if the "service" will be "good" BEFORE IT EVER HAPPENS??? Tips come AFTER the service, NOT before. Otherwise it's called "a wage".

My whole street has this problem with Amazon and UPS/FedEx deliveries because it's the historic district and we're not allowed bright porch lights or large house numbers.

I would think that a locked gate/door would put a limit on where the "threshold" could be.
