40 ‘Cool Guides’ People Shared On This Group That Contain Information They Don’t Teach At School (New Pics)
Whether we're talking about politics or the animal kingdom, learning something new can require a fair amount of time and effort. Luckily, we don't always have to read lengthy scientific papers. Some people do it for us. And not only that — they narrow down everything to a few bullet points and illustrate them to help our minds remember.
And if you want a place that stores these effective tools, look no further than the subreddit r/CoolGuides. As the name suggests, it collects picture-based reference guides for pretty much anything and everything.
"If it seems like something someone might print, physically post, and reference then it is a good link for this sub," its moderators write in its 'About' section.

Opossums Are Our Friends
Let’s check whether we have something similar before importing them. Maybe Siebenschläfer?
Load More Replies..."If you see me, kindly ignore me." I'm sorry buddy, but if I ever get to see one of you IRL I am grabbing my camera and following you around the garden. <3
These things are everywhere where I live. I came home once to find one sitting on my sofa watching T.V.
Load More Replies...Unlike the Australian brush tail possums, that are garden eating roof elephants. Haha
Roof elephants. So true. And leave pellets as evidence of not just being a bad dream.
Load More Replies...I have them in my yard, and I can confirm the lack of ticks. They eat a LOT of them.
They're common in my neighborhood, and I've not found a tick in our yard or on our pets in the 13-odd years we've lived here.
Load More Replies...Well the opossum is far from being a globally present animal. it's kind of a niche info
One night I was sitting on my front porch, but on the ground. I was on the edge so there was a bush to my right side. All of a sudden, a opossum came around the bush and looked at me as if to say, "what the hell are you doing out here so late?" I had never witnessed one up close and personal like that. After having 4 mini heart attacks, and of course paralyzed from fear, it just went along on it's way, not giving a crap about me. It was super cute irl too!
I had basically the same thing happen to me, except I was just on my porch. It's very low to the ground and only have 2 small cement steps with a large rose bush hugging them. When a healthy full grown opossum comes walking up to the porch as I'm sitting there smoking and just looks at me in surprise 😮and slowly continues on it's way. Idk what I expected but it was uneventful. I've often heard of hissing and growing from them, so it must not have felt threatened.
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, these little wonders of nature eat dog s**t. Didn't know that until I lived in the city for bit. I couldn't figure out why I never had to clean up dog mess in the yard. I googled"disappearing dog s**t" and found a game cam video of a possum in a lady's back yard, cleaning up after her dog. Way cool.
they eat carrion also. Some are full of worms & internal parasites. Beware!
Load More Replies...I love possum! I saved on whos mother was run over. I raised him up and he learned how to forge for food so we released him back into the wild. I still will catch a wild one from time to time and hold it like a baby to freak my city neighbors out.
Possum is a redneck delicacy in the backwoods of the US. Revolting "Ewww. Yuck, double yuck."
We've got an elderly fella that lives in the woods behind my house. Named him Stubby for his half tail. I love opossums!
Very helpful creatures, they just freak me out if they get too close.
We had one that would give birth in the crawl space under our home. This occurred for a few years until one year she died before giving birth. We found out by the odor. After she was extricated, I closed off access. One year our cat brought in a baby and the baby played opossum on us, lol. I carried her back out to where mom was and she perked right up. (Playing opossum is just like they are playing dead)
I have some that occasionally come to eat my outdoor cats' food. They are welcome.
so what I'm reading is, to get rid of the insanely large spiders that find their way into my house, all i need is an opossum
Well, not so happy little guys for horse owners as they can transmit EPM to horses, which is deadly to horses.
While I don't doubt they're immune to Lyme disease or rabies...I'd love to know why and/or how that works.
The immunity to rabies is because they have a normal body temperature that is too low for the virus to live. I dont think its 100% though. They will sometimes still get rabies. Lyme disease, I have no idea about.
Load More Replies...I love opossums!! We have lots were I live..you see them at night ..I love their pink nose !
When my wife got to see the one I found on our sofa, the first thing she said was "AWWWWWWWWW...Look at its little FEEEEEEEEEEET!!!" I told her if she ever got one as a pet, she HAD to name it Little Feet.
Load More Replies...I don't want to harm any animal, especially not harmless animals, or useful like opossums.
My neighbour has seen these in her back yard, but we've never seen any! Nice to know they're around somewhere. I wish they could scare off the evil racoons though.
I dunno about scaring the coons away... Ive seen pics of the " street cat trio" (opposum, racoon and skunk) all hangin out, eating out of the same garbage can.
Load More Replies...Opossums carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. They may also be infested with fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Opossums are hosts for cat and dog fleas, especially in urban environments. This flea infestation on opossums is particularly concerning for transmission of flea-borne typhus in parts of California. So still plenty of nasty and potentially fatal illnesses there...
Like many other animals. You don’t need to kiss them. Just leave them alone.
Load More Replies...I saw one in my trash can last winter and it hissed at me. I peed my pants and a neighbor took it away for me. 😩 This post made me feel better.
Beware the Possum! Opossums carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, murine typhus, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. It is very rare for opossums to carry rabies, but they are mammals, so it is possible. Opossums are not harmful animals, yet they might get defensive if they feel threatened. It is not safe to handle an opossum with bare hands since they may bite when they become defensive. A nasty infection can follow. If you begin to notice inflammation or swelling, you should seek medical help immediately. They eat cat and dog feces. They eat carrion also. Some are full of worms & internal parasites. All of the worms and parasites lay eggs. Some of these parasites and worms can be hosted by humans. So Beware! If a kind-hearted person leaves food out for the feral cats, eventually possums will come to join the feast.
Those are australian possums introduced by humans to new zealand where they dont belong, these are north american opossums that are native to north america and part of the ecosystem

Dana Jandhyala, who has had a long career as an educator where she has taught in different schools and institutes, believes that visuals hold more appeal than plain text to curious and intuitive minds.
"Till date, several studies have been conducted which prove the power of visual aids in eLearning," she wrote. "And there are some interesting results drawn from them. Such as, learners respond to visual information faster as compared to text-only materials. Also, visuals help improve learning tremendously and on multiple levels. Hence, around 65% of the population comprises visual learners."

That really made my day, just love this - especially the sentence at the bottom. 🙏
Simple Trick For Calculating Percentage
I had this realization on my own. I’m crap at maths, it was the best feeling!
Jandhyala said there are several advantages of visual aids:
They help store information longer. "Images are the simplest and the most effective way to make sure that the information gets stored as long-term memory. As per Dr. Lynell Burmark, an education consultant, our short term memory processes words and can only retain about seven bits of information. Whereas, images are directly processed by our long-term memory, where they get indelibly etched."
They make communication quicker and simpler. "Information listed in bullets is no doubt simpler to process. But, that same information in the form of an image or a video is processed even more quickly."
As per the Visual Teaching Alliance:
- Of all the information transmitted to the brain, 90% is visual;
- As opposed to text, visuals are processed 60,000x faster;
- Humans are capable of getting the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10th of a second;
- 40% of nerve fibers are linked to the retina;
- Our brain can see images that last for only 13 milliseconds;
- The human eye can register 36,000 visual messages every hour;
- Hence, the eLearning programs which incorporate suitable visuals gain a higher preference over.

Visuals aid better comprehension. "They help learners grasp concepts easily by stimulating imagination and affecting their cognitive capabilities. Besides, the visual language is also known to have the potential to stretch 'human bandwidth' – which comprises absorbing, comprehending and analyzing new information."
Visuals act as stimulators for emotions. "Emotions and visual information are processed in the same part of the human brain. Visual stimuli and emotional response are linked in a simple way and these two together generate what we call memories. Hence, powerful images and visual metaphors create strong impressions and lasting memories in learners."
They drive motivation. "Most of the students struggle with some of their subjects because they find them uninteresting and hence lack the motivation to put in the required efforts. Visuals are the best bet in such scenarios. Captivating images, engaging videos, interesting infographics, etc. help learners fight the boredom and motivate them to do better."
So it very well might be that the things you'll learn from these guides will stay with you. At least for a little while.

Why You Shouldn’t Give Up When Starting Something New
This what millions of antivaxers are experiencing right now. They feel informed because they did internet research. Or because they are a nurse. Or because they know someone who backs up their opinion. They don't even know how much they don't know. To me, the scariest part of being in the US right now is how willing people are to take their opinion as a fact and use groupthink as a form of confirmation. Thousands of people who studied the subject for 8 years and currently work in the field are saying one thing while the other side has Timmy, the YouTube video maker talking to a guy that used to work at company and got fired is saying another. And somehow the thought process is the video is right. That is scary

Plant Watering Guide
Not true. It depends on the type of plant. If it's a deciduous plant, you risk drowning it with overwater / waterlogging. Similarly if it is a succulent. You need to look at the leaf type to determine how much water to provide. Assuming a pot plant: waxy leaves, thicker than paper: 1 cup every three days papery thin leaves, dry/papery surface: ½ cup every two days or ¼ cup every day thick fleshy leaves: ½ cup once a week etc.

Maybe not anymore. I learned all that proofreading stuff in grade school. The music thing is annoying but I guarantee they teach it in some Montessori school somewhere...
