I'm raising a couple of bilingual sons in Japan and I've purposely taught them all the swear words (for educational purposes lol), with the disclaimer that any English speakers they run into will be less than impressed with those words coming out of pre-teen mouths. I actually couldn't be bothered if they would use the words and there wouldn't be any scolding but so far they seem to keep them in the forbidden file. :)

Competition comparison is bad. My aunt pitted me against my cousin for some weird reason. She was a cheerleader while I have zero interest so I didn't get the point? But my little guy is always worried about being inferior to his big brother. I might say something like, "Sure, you're right, he's really awesomely skilled with that, but you know you are so much more talented in this other area than he was at your age. Isn't it cool that we all have unique strengths and abilities?"

There actually is a medical condition where the proper brain chemicals aren't created to control the pee urge when sleeping. My cousin's kid was still wetting the bed as an adult every time she couldn't afford her medication for the disorder. Kids don't wet the bed because they WANT to, geez.

I'm actually just impressed the day care is changing diapers in that 3-5 minute window where the "pre poop" is all alone in the diaper before the main event. I haven't found a day care yet that is that quick on diaper changes.

This is an instance where I would spoil the surprise and show my kid the picture and let them decide. I mean, cake. Prue is definitely TA but I think kids should always be allowed to make their own choices if it's not something harmful and is age appropriate. 5 is old enough to see the passive aggressiveness from Prue. I could see the same c**p from my own relatives at 5. Cleo already has an opinion on Prue and the pink thing, so this won't really change that opinion, but cake. CAKE!

My romance/real love is seeing the spoon drawer left open for the 3rd time today just like every day for the last 13 years. It used to be a pet peeve. I feel this. I love my parents, they are great people. But they also had a very specific idea of what they wanted me to be, and I tried, gosh how I tried. The extended family was a million times worse and I always felt like a blemish even though I was just a little kid trying to be loved. I'm now on the opposite side of the planet married to someone of a different nationality, raising our children in a different culture than that in which I grew up. According to my entire extended family, I am the weird and wild rebellious outcast. And yet I've been blissfully happy for the last 13 years since I stopped trying to fake it for them all.

Just because she always jumps to the most horrific conclusions when someone is out late does not mean I need to. And definitely do not try to push infidelity conspiracies on an emotionally and mentally fragile person. That is just psychotic cruelty.

After a lifetime of these kinds of stories from my time in America, I'm so happy to have Japan's restaurant service now. ALL servers are your server. Just put your hand up and whoever is closest swoops in cheerfully to get you whatever you need, immediately. And we don't tip. Tipping is actually kind of like an insult to the owner accusing them of not taking care of their employees. But then again we also actually have non-restaurant options like McDonald's meals that look as beautiful as the advertisement pictures too and sparkling clean facilities.

My weird genius thing is I suck at math unless I can see it in action, for example in physics. For me though, crocheting 3D amigurumi toys from flat 2D drawings is especially my gift. Initiatives to pay servers min wage have been hard to get traction. The servers KNOW that their cries about unfair wages guilt trips stupid patron into freely giving their money away to panhandlers with their food- and almost ALL of the servers are making WELL OVER minimum wage - and they don't declare a good portion of it on their taxes. Servers work the system, fools help them out. Employers don't want to pay a living wage when their servers are doing just fine blackmailing the public.

Both of my sons could read before they could speak, so before 18 months for certain. It's not that hard if you read to them and do flashcards in the "Teach your baby to read" style. The only difference is my sons accomplished it in English AND Japanese hiragana. If we give our kids access to information in a way they can absorb it, absorb it they will.
