Some people swear by things they picked up at school or university, others rely on the opinions of experts, while there are also some who get their intake of facts from the World Wide Web. There are plenty of scientific theories that have been proven wrong, so things that you've heard from 3 friends and aunt and your grandma can definitely be wrong. A Common Belief Regarding Self-Harm Is That It Is An Attention-Seeking Behaviour; In Many Cases, This Is Inaccurate

Many self-harmers are very self-conscious of their wounds and scars and feel guilty about their behaviour, leading them to go to great lengths to conceal their behaviour from others. They may offer alternative explanations for their injuries, or conceal their scars with clothing.

Yes! The worst part is that it's characterizing the victims of these disorders as needy and attention-seeking when this is not the case. It's essentially victim-blaming, just instead of attacking crime victims it's attacking victims of mental illness.

I have them on my arms (all over), legs, & stomach. I gave up on trying to hide them a few years ago, instead I use it as an example of what you DON'T want to do to yourself. My son & nieces saw the embarrassment I had when people asked about them (when I was trying to cover them) and the scars NEVER go away, so as they have grown-up they have seen them and told me flat out, by seeing what I did, and the fact they never go away- they would never do it. So maybe my pain saved them from some..

Even if it was attention seeking, if someone is prepared to go to those lengths to get someone's attention, they obviously need it, serious professional, compassionate medical attention and they should get it. It's not something to be condemned.

The pain & desperation to get rid of the anxiety, hurt and anger is real when it comes to self harm. The last thing on your mind is the attention the life long scars will bring. The only thought on your mine is peace, relief & making it through the crisis in your mind. Many years later, I don't hate the scars, they are constant reminders of how far I've made it. I'm grateful to be alive, and their scars of life. Mental illness is real, and I've got the scars to prove it!

For me it was diffenrent. I never did it, but once our family's cat scratched me so bad on my arm that I needed to put bandages on it. Every gossip adolescent heard and talked about me as "the lame girl that does THAT" like "omg she's so dumb!". A friend of mine ended up asking me about it, and of course I denied and explained the truth, until another friend confided that they were inded doing it. They weren't proud of it, they were feeling so bad about themselves they felt the need to feel something else, anything to feel better but they couldn't stand their own self. After that not only did I not justify myself anymore, I also stoped hiding the bandages. In those cases people seek others who did it, so I tried to atract the gossips to me. I still don't know if it was a good plan...

Yes. Even if you're diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc- you still might have a family member who tells you to "suck it up" or "get over it." Even if you hide your scars well and they don't see them until years later they'll say you did it for attention. Which is odd when they don't find out until a full decade later.

To be fair though...MOST self-harmers who aren't just looking for attention will choose to cut in places like their thighs or stomachs where they can easily hide it with clothing. The attention seekers cut in the obvious places. And yes, sometimes this is because they don't know any other way to actually get help...but we have to acknowledge that there are people who cut just because they want to play victim.

It's actually bot true that's a big mystery. To not know the facts, which are well documented these days, is deliberate ignorance. Many have been done on genetic heretability and risk factors. Genetics can cause vunerability or have protective factors against mental illness but environmental triggers are the main factor - war, poverty, trauma, overwork, chronic illness, malnutrition, marginalisation, oppression, racism, transphobia, environmental degradation. Suicide is always preventable. Honestly it's not a mystery at all.

Over 10 years clean and it wasn't about the attention, it was about the high, at least for me. The pain and the endorphins would stop the crying and despret feelings. After I was just embarrassed and shameful. My parents and friends had zero idea till one day I flipped my s**t and my mom walked in on me slicing up my leg. in my 20's when l was splitting up with my partner l tried suicide via cutting my wrists..l dismantled the blades from a disposable razor to cut my wrists..when l ran it over my left wrist, rather shallow, l thought "oohh, that hurt a bit much"..the thing is, l was so depressed about the breakup, and dissatisfied about my suicide failure that l proceeded to cut myself up both lower arms..one for each year we were together..11 in total..for many years my mother thought I'd been scratched by one of my cats, god bless her..it took till my 40's for the scars to finally disappear...I'm now into my mid 50's..I'm now glad my attempt failed because l have manged so many adventures since and watched my sons grow up to be good men and find great partners and give me three beautiful grandchildren..so in a way, a failure was a success in the end..l since found out that l was cutting the wrong way..I'm glad that l got THAT wrong..it wasn't my only attempt, but as you can see l failed on both times.

I have been mentally ill since before my teens. I started cutting when I was 17, I am 47 now. I have a tattoo covering the majority of my scars and can wear short sleeves to cover the rest. Cutting is very personal and private. Attention seeking is not the reason for it and suicide is not either. It's a way of copying. Not the best way to cope.

Also - if someone behaves in a destructive manner in order to get attention, one can bet said attention is desperately needed. People do, in fact, need attention. They need to know they are being seen and cared for. If they don't get it in healthy ways, they might turn to damaging ones.

They don't relish ER visits or telling others, they are calling out for help. You obviously don't listen because you are too butthurt. So what are they supposed to do? Just stop talking or trying? Get them help and listen to what they are saying, even if they put some of the blame on you. Truth be told looking at the way you react and talk about them, there is probably some truth in that. This might be the only way they know to communicate about the hurt inside them atm. Help them find other ways. If you don't soon enough you are gonna wish you were still in that ER room. Also talking about your own child like that? Disgusting. I sincerely hope they don't ever see it, nobody deserves that.

Not true at all. Some will wait till thier loved one pops to the shops. Some will do so while everyone is having dinner. Some that die might not have meant it at all. Many that do want to, find it impossible to complete. For many, self harm is a way to stay alive. Many people make attempts and never tell anyone. Don't dismiss suicidality with statements that imply that only the people who died are 'really' suicidal. So many people live with suicidal ideation every day and it's an unimaginable hell.

This is fallacious reasoning: just because they are ashamed of their actions does not mean they didn't do those actions for attention. We do things for the attention of everyone, for the attention of specific people, or even for our own attention. Self-harm is often an attempt to reinforce the idea that we care about ourselves: we harm ourselves, and when we give it the attention we sought, we feel like we matter. The more compassionate goal is to remove the stigma of seeking attention. When one seeks attention it is usually because of an underlying injury, and no one should be condemned for seeking attention/ help.

The Forbidden Fruit Is Not Apple

The forbidden fruit mentioned in the Book of Genesis is never identified as an apple, a misconception widely depicted in Western art. The original Hebrew texts mention only tree and fruit. Early Latin translations use the word mali, which can be taken to mean both "evil" and "apple". In early Germanic languages the word "apple" and its cognates usually meant simply "fruit". German and French artists commonly depict the fruit as an apple from the 12th century onwards, and John Milton's Areopagitica from 1644 explicitly mentions the fruit as an apple. Jewish scholars have suggested that the fruit could have been a grape, a fig, wheat, an apricot, or an etrog.

Vomiting Was Not A Regular Part Of Roman Dining Customs

Vomiting Was Not A Regular Part Of Roman Dining Customs
