It's that time of year. December has come and it's brought all of its joys, including Christmas. But what is the meaning of this special holiday? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, or the cards in the mail?

Christmas is the mass for Christ, the celebration of the birth of Jesus, a time for prayer, reflection, and service. But it can also be what you make of it.

To show you that there are plenty of different ways to have a wholesome Christmas, Bored Panda collected a list of the merriest moments that people have created for themselves and others. From decorating your prosthetics with your kid to serving meals for those in need, continue scrolling and check out the pics. They should start filling you up with festive mood pretty soon!

Bah humbug, that guy was a dıck! Even if you hate Christmas, you make some effort for the one you love. I'm Jewish yet I still cook all day on Christmas for my partner. You do it because it makes them happy.

Ha, I love the little cardboard trailer, so cute!! Your new roommate is cute too. I don’t celebrate Christmas, have not done so since I was 10 but I do respect others needs and wants for the holidays, I mean it’s one day a year, yes I suffer through three months of commercialized overkill, but if I’m with someone and it’s meaningful to them, I’m going to support that.

I stopped celebrating Christmas after my son died and in all honesty it was so freeing! No more pressure! I get to do whatever I want in the month of December with no expectations. I had 24 wonderful Christmas with my son and that was plenty, I'm so good doing OTHER things..it's quite alright making December be what you want it to be..go gloriously over the top or don't celebrate at all, find what creates peace and happiness within you and do something wonderful and kind for someone else! That's a good feeling that we all should be doing every month! Blessings to everyone

I'm an atheist and celebrate Christmas with my family. I love the Christmas season. The lights, decorations, music, food, and togetherness with loved ones. I don't need to worship a god to have a nice day. My country, USA, tends to treat anyone who isn't a Christian as a less important or valuable person. So many people are hyper judgemental. It's absurd. I'm even the one who puts up the tree every year and I'll gladly tell others "Merry Christmas." All this "war on Christmas" talk is pure garbage. This godless heathen loves Christmas as much as any "Christian.". 😆

After more than 25 years my son finally got a Xmas tree last year. His drunken father would always wreck the Xmas tree and trample his presents. His dad died 20 years ago and he didn't want a tree until last year. He left the lit tree up until the lights burned out. We bought new lights this year and relit it. Never too late to celebrate!!!

Shasi and Pallu Patel, who own Meet and Deep Newsagents in Twickenham, London, will dress up in festive outfits, play carols and hand out free mince pies and sweets to anyone who drops in between midday and 2pm. They shared a post on Facebook that read: “If you are alone, pop in for a hug and a mince pie! You don’t have to buy anything, we are family.” This is not the first time the Patels have opened their store on the festive holiday. He said they had the idea after an elderly lady called Dot, who passed away last year, came into their shop just before Christmas, telling them a man posing as a gas fitter had stolen from her. Deepen’s older brother, Neeten, posted a warning on Facebook urging the local community to be extra cautious. To their surprise, people started arriving with gifts for Dot. “It was the best Christmas she ever had,”

As we can see, the message of Christmas is universal and revolves around bringing peace, harmony, and unity among all mankind.

In today’s world, plagued with pandemics, wars, destruction, poverty, and terrorism, such goodwill is necessary to maintain our good spirits. Christmas creates an atmosphere of kindness, brotherhood, and benevolence, and energizes society, which can sometimes seem indifferent to caring values.

I have generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety, and my little dog has a way of calming me when it gets bad. He doesn't do any specific thing to help, but just petting him, or snuggling or playing with him, or even just looking at his puppy dog eyes and sweet face takes the anxiety down at least a couple notches! I'd be lost without him!

But that doesn't mean that we're doomed. In fact, we can be pretty generous. And Christmas has the tremendous power to open up our hearts.

Did you know that nearly one-third (31%) of annual giving in the US occurs in December? The season is a huge deal for the nonprofit sector, driving billions of dollars in just a few days; around 12% of all giving happens in the last three days of the year.

It's hard not to get into the Christmas season with all the festivities, lights, and music, regardless of our own religion or non-religion.

So as a wave of generosity engulfs the world, it's really heartwarming to see Christians and non-Christians alike giving to those less fortunate. Goodwill towards others and the simple sharing of joy and love with family and friends is something all of us hope for and can contribute to.

Way To Go To Save Trees

Way To Go To Save Trees

Two entrepreneurs started a side hustle renting Christmas trees to reduce the number that end up in landfill. Every January, they replant your tree back on their farm so you can rent it again next Christmas. When your tree hits 7 ft, it's retired and planted back in its original forest.

Christmas trees in landfills? What a weird country. We burn all our trash for electricity and trees (oddly enough) burn very well.

My brother in law lived with my mom in law and had many serious health problems. One day around Christmas my MIL told me he was on the couch shivering and said that despite the blankets, he was cold and couldn't get warm. Their small dog grabbed the Christmas tree skirt out from under the tree, went over to him and sat there with it in his mouth until my brother in law took it. Brother in law and mom In law both cried. I did too when they told me.

At least most of use have. Maybe it’s different now but growing up being a gay young brown kid in the 90’s was not very fun. Anyways, merry Xmas to all and especially this gay couple!! I can tell you it was excruciating for your son to let you touch him. I cringe every time my mom just walks by me because I never know when I'll hear "touching you" and she'll just tap me on the arm. She knows how much I hate it, yet she still does it. Thank god my step-dad has somehow already managed to ruin x-mas, so she's sticking to herself pretty much.

It's incredible that you understand, that you bothered to ask how long you could hug... It would be so easy to blame and be hurt and mad, not respect him or try to punish. Or even stop trying all together. As a daughter with mental illness I want to tell you that's amazing and that I may know how you feel. I was not an easy child either.

That is so incredible. As a person with a grandparent who had the worst case of Lewy body dementia that the expert had ever seen along with Global Aphasia, I can't stress how important taking down these nuggets of information are. It absolutely helps trigger memories and keeps the grey matter active and sparking. A word of advise to anyone who had grandparents or parents with dementia. There is probably a strong chance you will end up with it at some stage, so take as many photos while you can. Frivolous, stupid, serious, whatever, just take them.

My grandmother in her last years...100 and 101 couldn't see well enough to write and I couldn't get everything down missed all the side comments and stories. Both my brother and I recorded her at different times. She forgot she was being recorded. Such receipts and memories. When she was born there wasn't electricity or cars. Mostly dirt roads. As a centurion she saw so much change in our country, especially the south where she was from.

This is so cute. The yearly picture idea is great. I knew this photographer who would interview his daughter and tape it every birthday. If you get these two to pose like this again, that alone would secure your place in history. If not, just having the two together in a pic would be something that no gift would ever compare to.

Spiders are our friends! Only a very few are dangerous to us. They control harmful and bothersome bugs. Sure, it's no fun bungling into a spiderweb - but the benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks!

When my grandfather died in 1975, I was not permitted by my dad and his brothers to visit him, since them thought it would be disturbing for me. But now 55 it still bothers that my 9 years old self couldn't say goodbye to him and I am sure it would have meant something to him too.

Took a pottery class and found out just how much skill goes into even something as “simple “ as a mug😁. I came out of the class with one slightly “challenged “ mug and my instructor had to help save that one 😹. These are beautiful. Support your local artisans and, no, 25-30 bucks is not too much for a beautiful handcrafted item

I've seen the news clip for this. She acts all slow and quiet - like koalas supposedly do - until the wildlife rescue people go near her, then she turns into a hissing demon that would make Tasmanian devils run. The family did all the right things in looking after her and leaving her alone. At least it wasn't a funnelweb or brown snake!

They were reluctant and warned me of the risks, but so nice and did a great job. For the Halloween festivities, I dressed up like a rock star. Had it been Christmas, would have colored it red and green. You ARE a rock star and congrats!

yes, you will be okay. my mom and grandmother passed on christmas eve. it was hard that night with all the adult trying to hold it together for the sake of the little ones who would not understand the sadness of what was supposed to be an exciting night. i do the dinner(s) now. not as elaborate as mom's or nannie's meals but with all their recipes. except for the pies...nannie was the pie maker of the flakiest tender crusts. as much as she tried to teach me, i do premade crusts.

As an "old lady," may I just say I don't give a sh*t if you call me an old lady! It's factual, plus you're fun, you share your thoughts and personal stories in conversation with a coworker that some younger people probably ignore, and you gave her an opportunity to make your day and forever be part of your favorite memories! For anyone who may not know, making someone else happy and knowing you will forever be part of a favorite memory is the Greatest Thing of All Time, especially appreciated as we age and understand the only gifts that last are favorite memories! Made my day, young dude!

You mean off limits for anyone then parents, right? i can't imagine sick kids being ALONE, without at least one parents staying with them, it would be inhuman (and according to science harmful, since kids get stressed so much it effects their health)

If it’s anything like the ones near me (UK) they have a designated list of visitors that they are allowed (I think it’s like 3 people?? Not sure if parents count in that number but they’re allowed at least one parent) and they get tested when they visit just like patients in A&E (ER) and outpatients are when they come in. Keeps the children happy while limiting contact to keep people safe. I think they do the same for long term patients and hospice patients too.

A lot of the men who use the 'Men's Sheds' in Australia do this. I think it is such a fantastic idea. I used to go to a holiday house on a farm provided to families of children with disabilities and each year we were allowed to choose one gift from the special cupboard. It had handmade wooden toys, knitted teddies etc. I think my mum still has some that my brothers chose.

Nice. But I hope people realize that a dog doesn't understand the concept of a painting. The painting isn't actually for the dog but the dogs owners. Dog like presents like toys and food. That's something they can understand. Projecting human emotions on animals is not to the benefit of the animal.

My mom's oldest got mad at her, and broke the only porcelain doll she ever got. There were 15 kids growing up in the 1920's. Very very poor, so no chance of a replacement. Until I heard the story. She cried, and so did I.

Some women should protect themselves better. This female shouldn't have stayed in an abusive relationship for 6 years (too long), if not for herself at least for her first child or children, and she shouldn't have had a child with the abuser. Some females submit to abusive relationships with males because they need approval from the male gender and it's truly sad they don't realize that the only thing that should matter is that they love and respect and protect themselves and their children. I (a female) myself planned on living and dying single because most of other women's husbands I knew of were abusive, but I met a wonderful kind man and I got married quite late in my life. But if I never would've met him there was nothing wrong with me staying single forever.

Do yourself a favor and actually look into the psychology of abuse victims instead of blaming the women for being so desperate for approval.

Everything is alright when you come home to a cat who, excitedly purring, awaits you and is happy to see you. You don't need humans, gifts, stuff and all the Blabla, just a few pounds of love, wrapped in fur, with a (partially) double voicebox.

My Newly-Found Grandmother And The Christmas Birthday Cake We Had Made For Her

My Newly-Found Grandmother And The Christmas Birthday Cake We Had Made For Her

My mother is adopted and recently (three years ago) found her biological family. Throughout her search for them, I kind of subconsciously considered it her thing - her parents, her family - and it wasn’t until she found them and they welcomed us with open arms that I realized it affected me too. I come from a very small family so it was overwhelming to suddenly have a whole new set of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. Anyway, my new grandmother’s birthday is on Christmas Day, and unlike some other Christmas birthday people who prefer to keep their birthdays separate from the holiday, she is totally Christmas obsessed (like me!) and leans into it. This is the cake we had made for her the first year we met them.

Dorothy, I was thinking something similar: immigrants are a backbone of the US: their average age is a younger population, so they work and get taxed but they don't receive tax returns. The government keeps a lot of their money.

If only my husband had replaced the items I pawned when our electric or heat was cut off. Nope. It was always me making the sacrifices, he never did. I have a lot of regrets. Especially pawning my mom's 18k gold rosary she left me in her will. It really helped financially, but I'll never get that back. B@stard.

If you want actual flawless performance in modern hardware I'd recommend the MiSTer Multisystem. The developers went so far as to replicate the exact processor architecture of numerous retro systems in an FPGA, so it can run the original game ROMs natively, without any emulation or compromises of any kind.

That is wonderful and sweet and you have a great son! Just for future reference, the food banks, etc, would prefer the cash. They can buy in bulk and through discounts in ways normal people can't, making that $850 stretch farther. That said - I prefer to give the groceries too. It's more satisfying to hand over bags and bags and bags (last time I contributed to a food drive, the Mayor of Toronto was the one who unloaded my car!). :) Good on you for parenting such a generous soul!

I don’t know a ton about computers, but was able to download and run public-domain (free) copies of a bunch of different old games through a freeware called “dos box”. It was a couple of years ago but I was so excited! I played Lemmings and Chip’s Challenge and a few others who’s name has slipped my mind. That laptop was a great gift, and for anyone out there who doesn’t have an old one, maybe you could try dos box.

Yeah, I was able to play Oregon Trail with DosBox. You can also sometimes find versions of the games on torrent websites that are fixed to run with MagicISO (like dosbox but for slightly later programs).

Holy heck! I just put together a PC for myself at home (having had only a Mac for the last 10 years) and the first thing I installed was SimCity 3000! Your problem probably has to do with issues regarding the screen resolution as the highest SC3k supports is 1024x768. Running it in windowed mode should help.

It seems like some people are confused, so here’s the context: a few republican politicians took family Christmas photos where everyone was heavily armed (because of course they did). This is a response to that, hence the term ‘arm’.

I loved books growing up, as did my mother. Read to my daughter all the time and she had a wonderful supply of books through the years. She is now an adult and has to watch her money carefully. Goes to the library, takes out books and reads as often as possible. It's a lifetime love that we hope we gift. Doesn't cost much but gives them the world.

It sounds like they don't normally give this many gifts but it's been a hard, terrifying year, especially, I imagine, for the children of health care workers. I don't think this was an attempt to lessen any guilt. It seems like a once in a lifetime type of celebration that their children will remember in the future not in terms of what and how much they received but what it symbolized. Why people insist on putting their two cents in where it doesn't belong, I'll never understand and that is just a bit of my "food for thought".
