Woman Loses Husband And Best Friend To An Affair, Gets The Last Laugh Years Later

It doesn’t matter with whom your partner cheats; it hurts nonetheless. However, sometimes it hurts more when they do it with someone you’re close to. Unfortunately, that’s the case for many cheating stories, as research shows that only around 15% of cheaters are unfaithful with strangers or casual acquaintances.

The husband in this story cheated with his wife’s best friend, so she was betrayed by two of the most important people in her life. A few years later, after she recovered and established her small baking business, she heard from the couple again — they wanted to hire her for their child’s birthday. Here she faced a dilemma: should she accept the money and risk drama, or just refuse and keep her peace?

Unequal division of household labor is a common reason for divorce

Married couples divorce for many reasons, but the ones in this story seem like the classic ones. The husband accused his wife of “letting herself go” and essentially not loving her anymore. The wife, in turn, felt like she had to bear the brunt of the unpaid housework and “babying” her husband.

Although it’s 2026, division of labor in marriages is still surprisingly gendered. Last year, an Australian study found that men still do 50% less chores than women, the same as 20 years ago. According to the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia, men do an average of 12.8 hours of housework a week, and women do 18.4 hours.

It’s not hard to see why a marriage like this might face challenges. The wife, buried under household chores and unable to express her identity through work, hobbies, or socialization, is not happy. She starts neglecting her physical and mental well-being, resulting in her husband perceiving her as “boring” and not putting in effort to make him “feel special.”

The most common reasons for divorce are infidelity and drifting apart, but a whopping 25% of couples say they go their separate ways because of uneven division of housework. The Gottman Institute also claims that arguments over housework are the sixth-most-common topic that couples fight about.

Now, the affair partner “Kylie” faces the same challenges. She tells the OP that her husband doesn’t help her with chores or childcare. Many modern mothers say the same; according to a recent Pew survey, 63% of working mothers say they do more chores than their husbands, while 47% of fathers think they share household tasks equally.

Affair relationships often don’t last, but divorced women report better life satisfaction than their husbands

But that’s not the only reason why the marriage between “Kylie” and the OP’s ex-husband might not work out. A marriage born out of an affair is seldom successful. Researchers consistently find that what begins in secrecy has few chances of standing on its own in the long term.

As an affair recovery specialist, Dr. Kathy Nickersonexplained to Bored Panda in the past that emotions are heightened during an affair, and both partners have a rude wake-up call once they settle into a marriage a few years later.

“The unfaithful partner may believe they’re in love, but that ‘love’ is often built on obsession, fantasy, escape, and a distorted sense of reality—not true compatibility,” Dr. Nickerson said.

“Once the affair bubble pops and the real-world stressors come in, many realize their affair partner isn’t the solution they thought they were. But by then, the damage to the marriage may be too great to repair if they have spent too much time waffling between the two relationships,” she explained.

But the wives whose husbands leave for their affair partners often thrive after divorce. A 2013 study by researchers from Kingston University in the UK found that despite financial difficulties, women generally become happier and more satisfied with their lives after divorce. Women are also more likely to turn to their support systems, seek therapy, and be open to new experiences.

The OP is not an exception: she was able to get through a difficult time in her life on the better end, and with a small business and a new, supportive boyfriend.

Commenters had no sympathy for the best friend: “She ‘won’ a bad husband”

“I need [to] mentally prepare myself for every kind of scenario,” the woman wrote in the comments

Some advised her to take the order, others recommended staying out of the drama and keeping her peace

In the end, she decided to accept the job: “It looked too good to pass”

Hi there, fellow pandas! As a person (over)educated both in social sciences and literature, I'm most interested in how we connect and behave online (and sometimes in real life too.) The human experience is weird, so I try my best to put its peculiarities in writing. As a person who grew up chronically online, I now try to marry two sides of myself: the one who knows too much about MySpace, and the one who can't settle and needs to see every corner of the world.

I met the love of my life in my 40s and know people who have found their person in their 50s, 60s and even 70s. It is never too late to start over.

Such a great lesson in the abject stupidity of creating your life around another person. You can have a life with someone, but it can't be all about them.

OP won! New business, great new BF, doesn't have to cater to a man-child, plus - got paid enough to buy new equipment for her business! I agree with the comment, ex-hubs misses what she *did* for him. And if the 2 cheaters are unhappy in their marriage? 🤷‍♀️
