Bullet Bras Were All The Rage In The 1940s And 1950s, And These 98 Pics Will Poke Your Eyes
If you don’t know what a bullet bra is then you could be forgiven for thinking it’s something dangerous. And in a way it is, because its extremely conical points are sharp enough to poke your eye out.
You don’t see many of these vintage bras these days but they were very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. They were made famous by the sweater girls (various Hollywood actresses who adopted the fashion of wearing tight sweaters over a bullet-shaped or cone bra), and Madonna even wore one designed by Jean Paul Gaultier during her Blond Ambition Tour back in 1990. A vintage fashion lingerie company called What Katie Did was the first company to bring bullet bras back into modern production in 1999, and since then other companies have also started to make their own version of the iconic underwear. Gorgeous. This is how many women looked back in 1960 when I was 12. Shapely. The stuff women wear now smashes their breasts so they look like they have melons under their blouse.

I'm 82 and remember these marvelous bras with fondness; they were stitched around to hold those point up. Yes mam. I remember one scene in Star Trek; the female was laid out dying or something, Kirk bending over her and those things were pointing straight up like soldiers. Amazing.

I have a bra that makes me as pointy as this and let me tell you it makes my top half look really sexy. Unfortunately, I'd never prance around showing it because it has more stitching, scaffolding and rebar than any suspension bridge you'll see, it's not something to wear uncovered to seduce anybody!

Car bumpers, especially the 1950's Cadillacs had what were referred to as "Dagmars" that mimicked the bullet bra style. Named after 1950's TV star Dagmar from the "Broadway Open Hour" which was a TV show in the 1950's

She looks like she's breathing in her stomach as tight as it will go, and sticking her chest out as much as she can! I think the boob to waist ratio is what makes some of these pics look so strange. If they had larger waists, the pointy boobs wouldn't look so big and noticeable.

But notice here the bullet bra does not come out to sharp points like spears. This one is at least somewhat rounded. It might look a bit exaggerated because she is big on top. This is Betty Blue. If I remember correctly she measured 39 - 22 - 36, so there is a lot of difference between the first number and her waist. She must have needed a 34F or 36E bra. I have no idea who made them way back when but somebody had to .

She was definitely the hourglass figure. She posed for playboy at one time. The internet just cannot get her measurements right. At one time she measured 39 - 22 - 36. Then it lists her as wearing 39D. WTH? With that slender waist no way would she wear a 38 bra. More like a 34F

Because it's her undies. Undies now don't cover as much. The seams on her stocking. Nightmare to keep straight. And they didn't have any stretch like they do now, the undies, bra or stockings. Same for a garter belt. Thank God for pantyhose and spandex.

This is Evelyn West. Her hairstyle in this photo is not flattering. There are others of her looking quite stylish. I can't believe anyone even noticed hair with those gorgeous bazooms sticking out. I'm guessing by todays standards she wore a 36 D or 34 E. She measured 39-25-35, a true hourglass figure. She did some work as a stripper but ended up living at home alone in her later years. She was very out spoken regarding other women in the limelight and often was insulting. she was a sassy, brassy dame. she insured her breasts with Lloyds of London for $50,000 way back in the 1950's.

I wonder if this is some kind of fund raising event., judging from the fact that none of the woman really appear to be professional models. I believe at this time, some women's groups would stage fashion shows, some regular street clothes, but some a bit more outrageous, and sell high priced tickets to a select audience. The money went to a charity, so it was done for a good cause, and the women got to do something rather outrageous because they were raising money for a charity or local non-profit. Actually, they're not showing any more than a 2 piece bathing suit of the time would show.

I always hated those bras, not only the unnatural look, but the feel against the skin! The inner stitching itched, and left multiple red circles around the boobs!

I never realized this was an intentional fashion trend, and have always been thankful that bra technology advanced past "cone boob" phase. I guess some day people will look back at our round boob bras and wonder "WTF were they thinking?"

I had the same idea! Only I thought it had to do with shortages caused by WW2, the major ingredients like cotton and rubber. And they Had to be that shape because there wasn't any other materials available for the "boob" shape.

I graduated from High School in June of 1951 and remember these bras well. Don't remember anything at all about their comfort or discomfort or even the look of them because that's what ALL of the females were wearing!! I'm 84 soon and STILL hate to put on a bra... regardless of whether it points or mounds or stretches over my head! They hurt my ribs, won't stay in place, and I get out of them as quickly as possible. :)

I recently bought a bullet bra on eBay and they sent me three. I tried to send the extras back but they said to keep them. I will be bullet bra-tastic forever. With how ridiculous they look, they even feel crazy when you wear them. But still they look awesome in a 50's style dress. So pointy. My husband loves it and couldn't stop poking my pointy boob and making high pitch "boop" noises.

I think it looked nicer on the slightly smaller boob's, the well endowed lady's looked a little off balance. Whereas the smaller ones looked kinda nice in an odd way.
