Single Dad Who Can’t Afford Food Get’s A Heartwarming Gift From J. K. Rowling

A single and broke dad named Matt Burke shared a story about an amazing bond he created with his daughter through reading Harry Potter series together. However, he didn’t expect for J. K. Rowling to read it and respond.

In his story, Matt shared many heart-wrenching details about his life. “There have been too many evenings to count where I’ve gone without dinner so that she would be able to eat,” he wrote. Despite being unable to buy all of the basic necessities Matt didn’t give up. He’s trying hard to make the best out of his situation and be a good father. So, instead of going on trips with his daughter and buying expensive toys, Matt spends time with her reading books. As it turns out, his daughter loves Harry Potter and Matt had no other choice than to begin reading it too. “Now, if I’m being honest here, at first I was a little bit hesitant about getting involved in it because even in my mid 30’s I still seem to think I’m too cool for some things,” he said. But once they started reading these books together Matt couldn’t hide his excitement. “We’re having an absolute BLAST reading them together”

After noticing his story, the kind-hearted writer J.K Rowling gave him a lovely gift – a complete series of signed Harry Potter books, so he could continue reading them with his daughter. This kind act melted everyone’s hearts, and left Matt completely stunned.

She was a broke single parent once too. I love JK Rowling, she was removed from Forbes list of Billionaires because she has donated most of her wealth to charity. She makes this entire planet a better place.

And she was the *first ever* to lose her billionaire status due to charitable donations.

I've been getting tattoos since I was 15 years old. I am 32 years old now. I haven't gotten a new tattoo in a very long time but I am covered in them. If I were to be in this guy's same situation, I would also be scoffed at by people who would assume I spent all my money on them when they could have gone towards food, bills, etc. You really can't judge someone by how they look. You don't know when he got the tattoos and even if he did get some recently, its not like he got them all at once. You can get a little done at a time. My husband (tattoo artist) has a few clients who come to him in sessions, so they can afford it. And don't assume he spends his money on them now, while he is struggling. For all we know, all his tattoos were done in his early 20s. Just trying to offer a new perspective on this, since a few comments are full of assumptions.

Sorry but that looked like a smartphone in his hand taking the pic, he's covered in tattoos, and they are not cheap sunglasses -- I wonder what else he actually has. Seems to me the problem is his money is being spent on none essential rather than food. There are some genuinely struggling single parents - this isn't one of them.

I can't judge the phone. We don't know that he has mobile service on it. I have a phone I got for free because a friend bought a new one, it cost me nothing, and costs me nothing to use it on wi-fi only. What bothers me is that he has fancy-sunglasses money, and douchey knit-hat money. I'd give up a lot of things before I'd take to begging on the internet and trying to exploit someone else's history.

There is no info on how long they have struggled, or of her Mother, times change, things happen, his tattoos could have been trades with someone, family friend anything, the man loves his child, that is the only thing that matters.

OMG, can he feed her daughter with a signed copy? How is that any good for a single father who struggles with money. Is signed copy better to read than the books they already read?

One of the richest women in the world with a huge fan base responds to a sad story by saying "I'll send you money" and maybe "get you a good job" in a public message and what do you think would happen then? Guaranteed, there would be a huge increase in fans testing their writing skills and trying to write their own sad story. That is not to say I don't believe him, but any extra gestures she'd like to make could be done in private and it's not for any cynical person to know.

Maybe he could bond with her daughter by taking her to the tattoo shop and she could learn the fine art of pissing away the food/rent money on useless ink that they can't afford. I'm all for body art - but how about getting your priorities straight, ink is not cheap.

That was very nice of her. But I always wonder, when a single and broke parent, either smoking or drugging or really tatted, is using their money for the right things. I don’t know when he was tatted, but his daughter looks about 9-12, so his tats have to be during that time period. So tattoos are expensive, and I would think he got tatted instead of spending the money on food. I hate to be cynical, but now a days, people don’t tell the complete truth, and if as I said, you smoke or do drugs or are tatted up, then you aren’t using your money to pay for the food a growing child needs. Smoking is expensive. Tats are expensive and we all know drugs are the worst. On a less cynical note... does he access local food banks and soup kitchens to help feed her? What about grandparents? There are many programs out there to help parents feed their kids.

You don't know that he's spending his money on anything inappropriate. According to the intro he's in his mid thirties and so had ample time to get tats before his daughter was born. He has gone without food for her and is clearly prepared to put himself out in other ways for her as well. He wasn't keen on reading the books at first but he did it anyway and is enjoying not just the stories but the time he spends with his daughter. Why assume he takes drugs or smokes? Because he has tattoos? Plenty of people who smoke, drink and/or take drugs don't have tattoos. One doesn't mean the other is a given.
