Museum Asks Breastfeeding Mom To Cover Her Nipple, And Now They Wish They Hadn’t
A London mom was recently breastfeeding her 1-year-old son in the courtyard of the Victoria and Albert Museum when a staff member asked her to ‘cover up’ while doing so. Yeah, it’s 2017 and we’re still dealing with this.
The woman, whom we know only by the Twitter handle Vaguechera, had apparently only flashed a “nanosecond of nipple” when the incident occurred, and it goes without saying that she was just a little bit dismayed. After all, not only is breastfeeding one of the oldest and most natural practices known to humankind, it’s also protected by law in the UK, even in museums. To make matters worse, this all took place on August 5th – smack dab in the middle of World Breastfeeding Week.
The V&A found itself in serious hot water over this one, and in addition to issuing an official apology to the mom on behalf of both the museum and its director, Tristram Hunt, they had a lot of explaining to do after the woman’s clever Twitter post on the issue went viral with more than 7 thousand retweets. Scroll down to find out how she did it, how the museum responded, and what people are saying about it.
This mom was asked to ‘cover up’ while breastfeeding her son in a museum
However the place was full of nude women sculptures, so she thought of the perfect response
She took some photos of bare-breasted sculptures to show how ironic it was that she was not allowed to breastfeed there
She also added some hilarious captions to ridicule the situation even further
The tweets got shared so many times that the museum had nothing left to do, but publicly apologize
As breastfeeding is protected by law in the UK and other countries, many users were in support of her too
Others, however, clung to an alternative rhetoric
What do you think? Is breastfeeding in public a big deal? Tell us in the comments!

I really hope that the same people militate against the ads that cover our streets with half naked women (and men) to make us by yogurt and cars.
Is going? Already been sliding for sometime unfortunately.
Load More Replies...I remember during my studies, when I was talking with one of my fellow study colleagues, who happened to also be a young mother, she would also start to breastfeed her child, and you know what I did? I would either look her directly in the eye, or look away and just continue talking with her, because god forbid for not allowing her to feed her own damn kid. I really wish this wasn't an issue.
He's one year old..not a toddler. Get a grip you f*****g horrible bastards, this is a woman out and about with her child, she needs to feed him and that's it. Get to f**k with your ignorant rants about "privates" Maybe you were breastfed in public places, but didn't know it, so go live with your horrendous morals, somewhere life doesn't touch you. Ghastly horrible people.
No one, especially men, have a right to tell women what they may do with their bodies. Breastfeeding is a natural & beautiful function, peeps need to get over the puritan body shaming BS. If you don't like it then look away.
I do not know why people keep double standards. And why every time they find reasons to put some restrictions on women?
Funny thing is women put restrictions on women. Mainly those who don't breastfeed are hell annoyed with every little topic, image or promotion on breastfeeding, claiming they feel threatened and attacked. Sickening.
Load More Replies...Boobs are there to feed babies.Any other idea people have of them is a secondary thing. And what is more disruptive,a Mum quietly feeding her child, as nature intended,or a hungry baby screaming the place down?I'm sure people would complain then too,
You can't really compare art to a real person. Showing naked statues and a breast while breastfeeding is not the same. If I ever have a kid and I'm breastfeeding in public, I would want to cover up. I'd wear a breastfeeding shirt or use a scarf... I just don't want strangers see my breast. But just because I would cover up, I don't expect every mom to do so too and I certainly don't make a fuss about it.
You'd be surprised how little of the breast is visible when breastfeeding, even without a cover.
Load More Replies...People go around telling Muslim women that they must be "oppressed" to want to wear head coverings for "modesty", completely oblivious to the hypocrisy of most countries' views on the "modesty" of a female nipple which they themselves perpetuate.
Double, triple and quadruple bravo! Touché and hear hear as well! I hate the word 'modest' it is invariably used by men or ultra conservative women, to shame women and oppress them into covering up parts of the body that the other person or group finds uncomfortable or arousing. I cannot recall ANYONE EVER calling on a man to be modest ! F**K modesty! If your baby needs feeding, get the boobs out and feed them. The only decent and proper response to anyone who complains, is to slowly and purposefully raise your middle finger.

Happened to me in a national gallery in Oz that spent 1.5 mil on a bronze era statue of s breast feeding mum: nips and all!
You're not a hero for breast feeding your kid. SO tired of this subject.
I've breastfed myself, and witnessed a certain number of mothers do it. Only once did I see a mother unnecessarily flaunting her nipples. All the other times, it was made in a totally natural way that you'd have to be deranged find offensive. I myself tried to cover up in the beginning, but I found out rather quickly that it was terribly unpractical and drawing attention even more so from that moment I did it without fuss, neither hiding nor showing. But I've always felt a bit anxious about it, and no mothers should feel that way. There are parts of the world where it's not such a big deal...
Neither showing nipples is a big deal in such places, because that's natural.
Load More Replies...Because somehow breastfeeding is so much more offensive than the "sexy" advertisement you see everywhere.. ? At least with breastfeeding you're using the body part the way it's meant to.
I really don't get why is this even an issue. Babies need to be fed. I personally would not choose to do it in the museum but that should be her choice. It is such a normal thing to do , why should people get a say in when and where she does it. People look at disgusting things on the internet , but god forbid we see a boob used for its biological purpose.
Ah, yet another boob attack! I guess as long as we pay attention to boobs, such stories will pop up. I don't mind women breastfeeding publicly, wouldn't do it myself (come from a point where my boob is mine + my husbands and no strangers need to see it). Like someone said though - you don't like it, don't look at it. As a matter of fact you should turn your sight elsewhere, why would you look at her breast in the first place even? I face away, cause her boob is her private sphere, would make me uncomfortable to stare at her. If she feels ok with "sharing" it's her thing, not yours. Or mine. Mind your own boob (men and women alike).
She's not sharing boob with anyone. She's feeding her baby.

I am 76. Breastfeeding was just making a comeback when my kids were born. I think there should be a balance - yes, breastfeed your child in public. But perhaps just a bit of discretion? And really how silly is it when there is a statue of a breastfeeding Mom right in the museum!! If more women would breastfeed their children it would become the norm. And it is so much better for your child.
Fine, breastfeed your baby in public, I don't care. However don't breastfeed your dang toddler anywhere. It's weird and unhealthy.
I breastfed all of my sons. I hated having to go to a public bathroom to do it. If you have no issue seeing a mans chest then there should not be an issue seeing a woman breastfeed. All I can say is grow the heck up. Breastfeeding isn't a ploy for attention.
Free the Ta-Ta's! Personally I think the world would be a better place if we could go around topless whenever we wanted. I mean honestly, if guys can go around shirtless showing off their nipples, which exist only for aesthetic reasons, women should be able to do the same. Not for equality, but because boobs are awesome and only total prudes don't want to see them in all their glorious variations! I don't care if you are using them to feed your kid, or if you're just tired of sweating into your bra, let the girls go free! Also, since when are breasts part of your privates?
I think breasts are privates when someone sees them as so. For me my breasts are a private thing and I would feel uncomfortable showing them to stragers. Some things are reserved only for my hubby.
Load More Replies...Ok Kristine Owens, chill out. "do we critizise you when you prop a nasty bottle full of fake milk in your kid's mouth" , uhm apparently that's exactly what you're doing , yes. And "fake milk" , I'm assuming this person means formula(?) and there is nothing wrong with formula at all. There has been plenty of research comparing breastfeeding and formula and the difference is pretty much none .
I formula fed both my kids after being shamed into trying a hellish, traumatic and thankfully short breastfeeding experience, I gave absolutely zero f***s if anyone said anything because I knew that I was doing what was the right thing. My kids are now in school, smart and very healthy. The basics who criticize feeding choices are saying a lot more about themselves than anyone else
Load More Replies...OH MY GOD, WHO CARES? I'd only think it's inappropriate somewhere like a fancy restaurant or something, but then the issue isn't so much "breastfeeding" as "you shouldn't have a baby there".
If I were in her place, I'd go somewhere less crowded or cover up since I wouldn't be okay with strangers seeing my privates. But I understand that not everyone thinks like me so if I were part of the public, I'd just move away and avoid looking at her. I'm just too lazy to bother reacting to other people x)
Privates? It's a nipple. Almost everyone on the planet has them.
Load More Replies...I don't want to see anybodys breasts. What the heck is up with that now? People don't want men to go shirtless in the summer and they want to whip out their breasts to feed their babies. It's a bloody mess.
I love how we demonize something so pure and natural, yet insist that things like hate speech and pornographic art are covered under freedom of speech.
One day, I'm going to breastfeed a lifelike doll (I'm a man) and see if I get the same reactions. Probably not, because male nipples haven't been sexualized even though they look the same as women's. We're on a slippery slope to stupid, when breastfeeding is controversial, but electing a sexually predatory madman as president... We have that, climate change, wars, famine etc etc to worry about and we complain about breastfeeding?!? Holy f--k, people...
Here's a simple solution, if you don't want to see a mother breastfeeding her child, then don't look. I would assume that if you want to eat, you would just eat and not go into seclusion to go and have your meal. The same holds true for mothers that breastfeed. They should not be made to cover up or go into seclusion to feed their child. We don't make mothers that bottle feed their children to into special areas or cover them up as they feed, so why should it be mandatory that a breastfeeding mother covers up? As a mother that was on both ends of the spectrum (my kids both breast fed and bottle fed) I fail to see the need to have an issue about a child getting the nutrients and nourishment that they need, however they need it. Again, if a child had to be fed through a feeding tube, or an IV would you request that they cover up too? If you don't want to see it, don't look. It's pretty damn simple.
IMO, the more women breastfeed in public, the more people will become comfortable with seeing a mother and child doing something so natural. Breastfeeding in public is not the norm and a lot of people are reacting to perceptions of bodily functions should be performed in private. We cough, we spit, people scratch their crotches and pick their noses in public. They are never asked to cover up that I'm aware of except cough and sneezing because of the spread of germs. The more mothers do this, the more we will accept it as normal behavior.
As a woman who breastfed my youngest for 8.5 months--breasts are for food. Sorry if that messes with the sexualization of them...
I'm very sad about the negative comments on this thread. There is nothing unnatural about breast feeding, get a life
I don't understand why everyone are so obsessed with the topic, if I was a breastfeeding mom I'd like to have some privacy, why on earth would you breastfeed in front of everyone? Also, some people feel a bit uncomfortable in such a company and there's no way you can change this. Just stick to private places where no one would disturb you (or the other way round) while taking care of your children, it's much better for everyone, including you. Despite my unpopular opinion, I'd like to congratulate this mom and her followers, their burns and sarcastic replies really made my day.
Although the V&A say they have a private place for those who wish to use it, not everywhere does. And no, the toilets are not an option. You do not eat in the toilets and neither should your child. Personally, I never breastfed in front of anyone but my husband, but if someone is comfortable doing it in public why shouldn't they? It shows no more breast than many a bikini or low-cut dress once the nipple's in use. You would have to be staring to see anything to make you "uncomfortable" so people should just learn to mind their own business instead of staring.
Load More Replies...While I'm all for breastfeeding where, when and however you like. Forgive me if I am wrong but Isn't that child a little old to still be breastfeeding? Kinda reminds like something out of GoT.
If you get upset don't look, women have the right to breastfeed their baby, where and when they need to.
People should take their heads out of the gutter and stop thinking that breasts serve any additional function besides provide nourishment for babies.
Idk why people get so pissed off we all have been breastfed at least once in our lifetime so how would you like it if someone walks up to your mom and says you cant breastfeed here or that they have to cover themselves up during it
I think people that are uncomfortable nursing in public shouldn't do it. This solves all the real problems.
The real problem is that it most who feel uncomfortable have been made to feel uncomfortable. Because of people that think it's wrong.
Load More Replies...well, we can't see how the situation looked like so any opinion is based on our imagination. I have absolutely nothing against breastfeeding moms, but I witness couple situations which made me realise why people might not like breastfeeding in public. once I've met a mom who put both her breast out through the neckline of her shirt in a restaurant and once I've seen a mom TAKE HER TOP OFF. people forget that although it is natural to breastfeed, they are still in a public place and other people deserve some respect. they can feel uncomfortable and that's nothing bad, also we should not toss around things like "If you don't like it, don't look" or "eat at home". I do not go outside to look at my shoes or avoid eye contact with everyone around me. also I can see how it is good for the baby to feed him in a middle of a noisy crowd... but most moms feed in a way that you won't even notice them, and I don't mean covering from head to toes with a blanket.
Do you stare at a picture that you do not like, think is disgusting, makes you uncomfortable or is disrespectful towards you? So yes, if you do not like it don't look and make eye contact with someone else. Not everyone around you is breastfeeding either.
Load More Replies...This child on the pic is mature enough to take his time in Museum (2-3 hours?) with some snacks, fruits, etc. Newborns are different kind, but check the age of the children on the photos..
What if it was not a 1 y old, but 5 month old. What would you say then?
Load More Replies...Taking a s**t is more even natural than breastfeeding. Soon all these bitches will demand to take a s**t in public.
Milo, do you eat in your bathroom? On the toilet? Yes, taking a s**t is a natural body function, but it's also NOTHING LIKE FEEDING YOUR BABY. Breast milk isn't poop. Its not going to make someone sick, or cause you any trouble at all.. You clearly don't have kids, and I hope for their sake you don't have any until you grow the f**k up..
Load More Replies...Pretty sad how other women are to other women about breastfeeding. I don't understand why this is an issue. Do we criticize you when you prop a nasty plastic bottle full of fake milk in your kids face. I mean some mothers don't even hold their baby to feed it. SMH." Ughhh Kristine Owens it is hilarious how you don't see the irony and ignorance in your comment. 1) You literally just did what you are criticizing🙄"nasty plastic bottle"(I used glass bottles thanks) and assuming they prop their baby instead of holding them. 2) The majority of women that shame other breastfeeding moms are breastfeeding moms. Everytime see a woman shaming another woman for breastfeeding it is always "I breastfed this way you should too" 3) Lots of formula feeding moms find shaming breestfeeding moms not only disturbing, sad but also infuriating. There is only two ways to feed a baby. Through a breast of through a bottle. You do not need to be a hypocrite by shaming one to uplift the other.
So what they're saying is breasts can be shown for art, sales and sexual reasons but not when it's for the purpose of feeding a child. Ignorance at its finest unless standards at it's best. Maybe we should all walk with blankets we can throw over our faces when we need to eat.
That beautiful child is overflowing with cuteness ! its unbearable !!
It's a bit uncomfortable when you are having a conversation an eating. But, I support the mother's right to feed her child anywhere she is.Me feeling akward is my issues. The kids needs Trump mine.Even if it's not my baby.
Wonder how many of these people that leave negative comments on the true roll of mammary glands and insist that mothers cover up when feeding, go into a museum or gallery and gush over the breasts in oil or marble!
OMFG BREASTS NOT FOR SEX??! CALL THE LOCAL NEWS! Why do people have an issue with this? (I know the messed-up "reasoning", sigh). Why are women's nipples to be hidden when men's aren't? (I know the messed-up "reasoning" here too, sigh). Makes me think of Reese from "Malcolm in the Middle": "Wait, milk comes out of those??" Malcolm replies "Reese, that's what they're FOR!"
Jeez people. It's a boob. Women have them. Get over it. When I lived in Mexico, women would sit out on the stoop and chat with their friends while they were breastfeeding. Nobody thought anything about it at all. It's normal. It's natural.
I think women who have an issue with a mother breastfeeding her baby in public is probably so insecure with herself that she believes the mom is doing it to try and lure her man away. Sad that there are so many people in this world with such major unresolved issues and insecurities with themselves that they will deny a helpless little baby food
Sometimes it just a jerk that happens to work there who has no idea what the policy is.
Who are these forever virtue signaling uppity twats that feel the need to do this?
Feed your kids at home. Why must everything be out in the open these days?
I'll tell you a secret. *whispering* Only you can move your eyeballs around, you decide where you look and what you look at.*end whispering*

Wow truly people have their priorities straight. Focus on breastfeeding mothers and not the criminal activity, or cults.
Breastfeeding is a normal, natural way to feed a baby! Women who choose this way to feed should not be penalized for it! There is nothing shameful about breastfeeding! Those offended, just get used to it or look away! It is a time for educating your children to what is natural and normal.
I think V was quite creative in her response. Breastfeeding is as natural as sitting down and having a meal at a restaurant. Do we eat behind a shield? Come on folks pull that stick out of your behind!
Scroll down to find out how she did it, how the museum responded, and what people are saying about it. http://www.beautysk.com/
When I see a mother breastfeeding a baby do you know what I think? nothing, I think nothing. Most likely I won't even notice, because I'll be minding my own business instead of policing other people's mammary glands. When did this become an issue? why is this an issue? Why do women shame other women for this? why do people attribute a sexual/moral characteristic to breasts? They are just breasts....every other person has them (well, every person has them, male ones are not as developed because they did not evolve to FEED CHILDREN, which is their actual purpose). Rant over
You women are so hypocritical! I wonder how many times while out in public, you've passed some woman, with her breasts almost hanging out of their shirt, or a thin shirt and no bra, and thought nothing of it?! I bet more than one an hour! So, breast feeding is the most natural thing in the world, and why a boob would make you so uncomfortable, is beyond me! You sound like you are ashamed you have boobs! I bet several men walk through that museum, and get hard ons!! Are you going to be fair and point out their d***s are poking from their shorts at attention!? No you aren't. In the same way, asking a woman to not feed in public, or not cover up, you shouldn't be pointing this out. Before whatever era in history decided that it's shameful to breast feed in public, everyone did it! Get over it. If you are uncomfortable, just don't look! Look at the hard d***s around you!
A woman should feel comfortable in any environment to feed her child! All who think otherwise should be ashamed of yourselves,if you don't like it,don't look. And for the mother who said she doesn't want her kids to see a woman doing the most natural thing in the world, shame on you for sexualizing a woman feeding her child.
its the most natural thing in the world to breast feed and i dont think anyone who feeds their baby should have to hide away from anyone as long as they are discreet ,as for any ones child seeing this well teaching them its what happened naturally for thousands of years bfore plastic was invented
There is sex everywhere and particularly partial or full female nudity sells! Loads of perfumes, fashion, make up and man other products. Im not talking about the 1970s type dolly girls in bikinis on ferraris! Im talking about more subtle draping and shots of breasts or buttocks or other areas. Plus of course frequent sex scenes and nusity on television and films are commonplace so much so that they dont even warrant certificate 18 or warnings before showing on TV anymore. Yet despite this or maybe because of this the breast has become so sexually charged that its original use of breast feeding is seen as abhorrant! I find it absolutely heartbreaking that we have come so far to be alienated from our bodies.
"obese Toddler" is a nasty insult. it says all about the commentator. and otherwise - there is a very simple trick for all that feel offended by the sight of a breastfeeding mom: look away. it's that simple.
The problem is that idiots have completely sexualized a womans breasts. Total ignorance on their part. Breasts were made for feeding our children. It has been this way since the very beginning of time. We women had no other way to feed our children. Breast feeding is the most natural way to feed a child, not only for bonding, but for their immune systems and much more. If you have a problem with a woman feeding her child from her breast, take a good look in the mirror. You're the problem!
Was just at a wedding in Portugal recently and a woman breastfed her baby right inside church. What's the big deal? Is this just a southern-american thing?
No one bats an eyelid when men walk about with their "private" boobs out and frankly I would like them to cover up as having those moobs flapping in the wind serves no biological need. Breastfeeding does. Maybe we should have private and secluded spaces for people who feel uncomfortable for the fact that children are being fed. God forbid a woman in the 21st century might actually leave her house with a baby! The shock, the horror! Get over yourselves.
I breastfed all mine but think it takes 5 seconds to be tactful with a small cloth and no-one to be bothered about it.
Doesn't the staff know that the only way they survived as a newborn baby was through breastfeeding?
It's funny how for hundreds of thousands of years it's not a problem for anyone but introduce literally unnatural notions of modesty and somehow the problem is breastfeeding and not people being conditioned to be offended.
To the people saying people's breasts are rude and you don't want to see them ( I take it you won't go to museums then?) they are only rude in your imagination they are a completely natural part of a female body and are not hidden by normal clothing it is perfectly obvious that they are there and often obvious they have nipples on them too, so is it the colour pink and or skin you object too?
Pull her private out? BREASTS ARE NOT PRIVATES! THEY ARE NOT SEXUAL ORGANS!
firstly, why shouldn't they ask someone to cover up, it's a perfectly reasonable request. why would you want your breasts on show for everyone...oh yes, because you're a 30 something brat. i keep forgetting. and secondly, that is not a baby. why are you not feeding the child actual food instead of continuing an increasingly unhealthy attachment the older the child gets. use a shawl. quit whining. it's not a spectator sport.
And it is not a theater play that you have paid to see. Rotate your eyeballs, that simple!
Load More Replies...I'm sorry but there is a place to do this without involving everyone else around- I had a woman feed her child in the middle of a restaurant one evening. I understand it's a normal function for a child but I really don't need to see her boob while I'm eating dinner- I was sitting across from my husband and I couldn't look at him without seeing her. I don't go out to dinner often with my husband so this was depressing. No- she didn't need to go to the bathroom as many people think I am suggesting-because I'm not. Moms just have a little politeness for those of us around you. You may be totally comfortable showing everything but no everyone is comfortable seeing everything.
Why do you feel so intimidated by other women boob? Have you asked yourself that question?

It's not that easy to pump milk. It's not just putting this on a boob and milk flows.

Anyone that can't get over a baby needing nutrients from the being that creates exactly that, is insane.. are we adults? It's breasts! Geesh
Let's say something.. When did we loose the respect about mothers and our roots ? IN A MUSEUM WITH FERTILITY SYMBOLS ?! Goodamnit, Breathfeeding is one of the most natural thing in that world for Mammiferes. It's barely the first thing we learn. Bonus ! : Mammiferes, Mammals, from Latin mamma "breast". Do i have to continue ?
Having spent a total of 7 years breastfeeding between 3 kids, there's no way I'd spend that time hiding from the world. How unreasonable.
The people objecting need to look at themselves. They are completely in the wrong. Their ridiculous hang ups have nothing to do with a baby being fed in the way that biology intended and they are the ones who need to cover up!
Honestly in my opinion the people so prudish need to be re-educated i nthe way nature works. would you stop a cow calf from feeding on it's mother's milk in a petting zoo? It's a public place. No, you'd go all mushy "awww that's so sweet" why is a woman taking the time out of her day to sit there and feed her child any different? I mean come on, once upon a time, if a woman didn't breast feed her child, the child would starve!! we need to stop relying on all this stupid formula powder because the immune systems of the generations are getting weaker and weaker we're needing too many medicines, vaccinations and what not. Breast feeding can give a child a head start in immunity.
Ruby, I'm sorry, but you clearly know nothing about how any of that works.. Please, even arguing the right side is hurting the issues when you clearly have no idea what you're saying... Formula is a godsend for those of us who can't breastfeed. For whatever reason. Without formula, my beautiful son would be dead. We give our children vaccines to guard against disease, not because we don't want to breastfeed them. Those are two completely different topics. If our (collective) children are actually getting weaker immune systems, its because herd immunity is becoming weaker from the dumbasses NOT vaccinating their children. Do us all a favor and educate yourself before you say things, because you sound as ignorant as the rest of them.

And furthermore, if a man can be shirtless in public, so can a female, it's only fair. And, another point, I am only 16 and I go to the beach. I see plenty of man boobs and I don't feel offended or feel like there is a need to walk up to them and say "hey, cover your boobs in public". No, I don't wanna get kicked off the beach for upsetting someone.
Insults shouldn't have been said, but I agree with the museum. No one wants to see a woman breastfeeding. It's not public behavior. If you're going out, take some in a bottle, or go the restroom. I'm all for woman's rights, but this is not a gender issue, it's a decency issue. Take other people into consideration. Is public urination acceptable? No
Her beautiful BABY (not a toddler) should NEVER have been brought into the conversation; let alone judged!! Don't like the sight of a mother breast feeding her child...don't look at them. Remember the day and age when people minded their own business and weren't triggered by everything that had nothing to do with them.
I think the right response to all who are ashamed on the public nude breast feeding view is that "when God made humans they were all breastfeeding nude in public".
Not sure what to feel about this... As on the other hand displaying naked woman statues doesn't mean women should go around topless and displaying naked men statutes doesn't mean men should go around flaunting their d***s. Appreciate the surface irony but the comparison isn't perfect.
I'm pretty sure I'd be more upset if I were to see dad trying to breast feed. SMH...
Anyone who is against breastfeeding is against humanity. Its THE MOST natural thing a mother and child can engage in. 150 years ago, asking a mother not to breastfeed when the child is hungry would have meant death for the child. While we've progressed enough to keep children from starving when breastfeeding fails, it's still not as good as the real, made-for-humans-by-humans milk. Now that we've avoided massive death in infancy, we should work on advancing ourselves to a level where we can support one another and hope for humankind to flourish.
Just been reading Woolf's Mrs Dalloway and she refers in passing to mothers suckling their babies, as part of the street scene. And I th No there was a simila be in To kill a mocking bird. Why was it accepted then, and is now such a big deal?
I am not against breast feeding in public, although i feed awkward conversating with a mother when nursing, but that's my problem. But i cant say i like the argument used hear, having sex and going the toilet are among the most natural things as well, should we do it in public too? Even though women's nipples have the main purpose of supplying nutrients to a baby whilst men's are purely there for sexual purposes, doesn't make sense to me! #freethenipple
Breasts literally exist to nurse babies. Whatever discomfort someone has around them is either some warped issue with babies receiving vital sustenance or some secondary belief (in which case: you have entitlement issues if you think such an important natural function should be adapted to your personal sensitivities).
Why does she need to cover up I really don't understand. I've been to museums and there's boobs everywhere you look. We all have nipples (some more beautiful than others) but I don't get it. She's a mother trying to tend to her child not a stripper putting on a show. Not that I disagree with strippers flaunting there stuff, but come on! How do you build the courage to say anything, seriously!
The Western world, mostly America, have such draconian views about sexuality and the human body. The a**l retentiveness is rooted, in my opinion, in the grasp on the human mind that religion has had for millennia (to wit, from thefreedictionary.com : 2. A thousand-year period of holiness mentioned in the book of Revelation, during which Jesus and his faithful followers are to rule on earth." A study of how this puritan plague has been responsible for sex crimes throughout history would be a fascinating read. Jesus had to take a c**p regularly too! If he didn't, now that would be a miracle! Pornography would not be so pernicious if religion/society did not make the human body something to be ashamed of instead of the amazing thing it is. It's OK in art but not in life? Maybe the thinking is that such appreciation can only be in the eyes of the rich and highly educated. Such arrogant modern classicism! Where's my copy of Vatsyaya's Kama Sutra?
If the sight of a breast feeding mom disturbs you then simply turn your gaze elsewhere, It isn't rocket science.
Nobody is against breastfeeding in public places, just cover up! The child is equally fed if u r wearing a pashmina around your shoulders
Last I checked no one can force you to look at anything against you will without attaching a mechanic devise on your head which keeps it in place and holds your eyelids open! Go exercise your own nipple in the privacy of your own home. Maybe you will feel better.
Load More Replies...Wow. If it's not hurting you, let people do what they want. I wouldn't get my boob out in public because I've got no body confidence, but hey, if she wants to feed her baby, let her go ahead for goodness sake. I'd prefer it if she like sat on a bench not stood directly in front of an exhibition or something, but it's no big deal for her to do it in a museum, or any public place really.
Mothers feeding babies is one of the most natural, healthy things around, and I am glad to see women standing up for the right to do so whenever and wherever they choose.
Some people are really sick. She asks why does she need to breastfeed in public? Wow. Moms should stay at home 24/7 until their baby stops suckling every second hour, and that's like whole six months. Bravo! Give yourself a prize for an idiot of a year.
And what if there is no father or anyone else to help her by going out and getting things that are needed?

I must admit that I was surprised when I saw a mother start to breast feed her child in the middle of a child-heavy pizza place
I have nothing against breast feeding in public as my partner does that too. But this mother's argument is pathetic. Using the statues of the museum to imply getting her naps out is okay. I mean, there are states of naked men in the museum showing off thier wangs - so that means it's okay for male nudity too then? She made a good point but made it badly.
When your dog or cat suckles their pups or kits do you put a blanket over them. Good Lord! It is nature's way. We invented bottles out of convenience or laziness. Although breastfeeding is much easier and faster. And it kickstarts your babies' immune system. Pay attention. If you don't know these things use the time to read up on the issue. Good for you, V!
So those of us who bottle feed are just lazy? Really? You're as pathetic as the rest of them.

Later they will ask women to cover their cleavages. Then arms and legs. Then any part of body.
In Jewish beliefs, we generally cover up until the knees and elbows, with a reasonable neckline (no cleavage). The reason for this is because we want to go unnoticed, so that when we do interact, it's because of an intellectual and emotional attachment, not just sexual attraction. I'm not dissing people who don't dress like that; it's a free world and they have every right to dress however they want. However, I am pointing out how covering up is not necessarily a bad thing. It's bad to be forced, but the concept itself is not bad.

Sickening.

But I understand that not everyone thinks like me so if I were part of the public, I'd just move away and avoid looking at her. I'm just too lazy to bother reacting to other people x)
Privates? It's a nipple. Almost everyone on the planet has them.

Ughhh Kristine Owens it is hilarious how you don't see the irony and ignorance in your comment.

I don't go out to dinner often with my husband so this was depressing. No- she didn't need to go to the bathroom as many people think I am suggesting-because I'm not.
Load More Replies...Everyone needs to suck it up. We all started as girls and were born naked. It's not like all of you adults don't know what breasts are.
After the watershed we hear and see swearing and nudity of TV, but can we go out cursing and streaking in public after 9pm?
OMG! Wrote feed instead of feel*, nooooo! How do i edit? This makes sound wrong!!!
Load More Replies...It's fine for men to walk around with their tops off and nipples out but for anyone to see a woman's nipple in public that's an outrage?
In case no one has told you yet, I'll tell you a secret. *whispering* Only you can move your eyeballs around, you decide where you look and what you look at.*end whispering*

You have to be a particular breed of stupid a*s pathetic moron with serious mommy issues to fat shame a child. And that's the last I'm gonna say about people who "get offended" by a woman exercising her nipples in any other way than rubbing them against a man's .... [censor].
Load More Replies...Stupid nipple nazis, they probably go home and wank off to hardcore porn, but in public oh no!!! it's a nipple!!! Now, don't get me wrong, I don't want to see nipples in restaurants either... that's when I become the nazi ;P
There is a difference between what is done in public and what is done in private. And you're not a nazi. You're a hypocrite.
Load More Replies...I just don't get people who are offended...It is a mother with her child, it is beautiful and natural. I get more offended by people who eat with their mouth open..
Load More Replies...Will she consider legal actions? will the museum give her free passes? (idk if its free in London, here we have to pay to get in so... idk)
Load More Replies...Why should a baby have you be covered up while it's being f*****g fed? Just so YOU aren't uncomfortable?
