These 30 Pics Show How Dystopic Our Society Already Is, And It’s Pretty Terrifying
While we may imagine a dystopian future of thought police, killer robots, and nuclear fallout, the real future predictions are much more boring. Instead of being brutally brainwashed and enslaved by fascist, authoritarian regimes, we have willingly enslaved ourselves. By allowing the top 1% to get exponentially richer, we drown in a sea of debts, tech, advertising, endless wars, environmental destruction, addictions, depression... the list goes on.
Brilliant, isn't it? But it's ok; there's always Facebook to scroll through (Bored Panda too, obvs), Netflix to watch, chemical-laden meals to consume, manufactured outrages over a mermaid's skin color to comment on. Who's got time for thoughtful resistance in this sick, sad world? Even those that think they are resisting by electing bigoted billionaires, bankers and Eton toffs to represent them are simply playing into their hands, as their dishonest, scaremongering claptrap divides us ever further over political, racial and gender lines!
Sometimes we need to take a step back and see the forest for the trees. This list, compiled by Bored Panda, contains some pretty terrifying examples of present-day dystopian society, things that make you realize that beyond all the distractions of trying to survive and thrive in the rat race, something's not quite right with this world.
So if you didn't find the sinister scenes of mindless automatons chanting “send her back” chilling enough, scroll down below to get a reality check on the spookily Orwellian society we are allowing to be constructed, and let's see if we can fix our near future in the comments! If you want to see even more proof of our dystopian world, be sure to check out our previous list!

Immigrants
The term 'boring dystopia was coined by the late academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher in 2015. He used it to refer to the "bland, mildly coercive signs that abound in late-stage capitalist society, which foster a vague sense of isolation or unease."
He started a Facebook group that documented these signs as a way to develop consciousness about the world around us. "It was understood from the start to be a consciousness-raising exercise, encouraging people to perceive the actual state of Britain rather than the PR state," Fisher said in an interview with Vice. "Which is surprisingly hard, because there's this mixture of Silicon Valley ideology, PR and advertising which distracts us from our own aesthetic poverty, and the reality of what we have. Which is just all these crap robots…"

Real Problem
"Boring Dystopia was partly about the fact that no one can care about stuff any more," said Fisher. "It's not that they don't care, but in a city like London, or any intensely pressured urban metropolis—add to that the pressures of capitalist cyberspace and people just feel like they perpetually have no time."
"Our resources for caring are depleted, and that has aesthetic consequences."
Charity
Saddest part is that a lot of celebs even get paid to promote a charity.
Put The Blame Where It Belongs
Let's not forget the politicians and celebrities who fly all over who have huge SUVs .
The Facebook group was short-lived, with Fisher quickly becoming disillusioned with Facebook itself. "For me the point at which the group started to go downhill was when it became like every other Facebook group. It was just recirculating 'content' and sending links, keeping people inside what I would call capitalist cyberspace instead of looking outside at their own environment. It felt like it was reinforcing the condition it was intended to displace," he explained.
"It didn't work at that scale, and you could feel that it wasn't the right place for it… It was just an experiment, and Facebook probably wasn't the right platform. I didn't want it to be diluted."

After Fisher's tragic death in 2017 at the age of 48, his work remains as his legacy and is as important and relevant as it's ever been. His 2009 book Capitalist Realism is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the modern world, and his 'Boring Dystopia' group lives on mainly in the subreddit r/ABoringDystopia.

There is one thing we can do: Get out and vote. Vote for the senators and representatives who aren't afraid to push for single-payer, universal health care. And if someone calls you a socialist, tell them to look at Japan, which a) is hardly socialist, b) has the world's longest life expectancy, and c) has a well-established universal health care system.

Only In America Would A Restaurant Display On The Wall That They Don’t Pay Their Staff Enough To Live On
I always wonder why they made it that it's the customer's job to make sure if the workers/servers are paid or not. does this system works?
Norway just banned tipping for state employees. Sounds like this is unfair to the poor people not receiving tips anymore? No! This is to discourage that there are jobs that pay so bad that a tip is needed to actually make it _affordable_ to work them. (Of course you can still tip out of kindness from your own pocket, which is just fine if you received extraordinary service. It is merely that ordinary service should just be included in the bill.)
Load More Replies...F**k off, you make your employees survive, your the one who wanted to run a company. Stop making others solve your problems.
So why not apply that to all other service industries?
Load More Replies...This is due to the absurd minimum wage law that says servers can be paid $2.13 an hour...as long as their tips make up the difference to $7.45 an hour, otherwise..the owner makes up the difference. Do you want to know how many of the mom and pop restaurants I've seen that don't pay the difference? Too many to let this continue. ALL wages should start at $7.45..the tips should be a bonus for good service.
The minimum wage must always be tied to the poverty level. A person working 40 hours per week at any job should be paid enough to live.
Load More Replies...It's amazing watching Americans argue about tipping like they think it'd never work if you paid people a decent wage. Look around ffs most countries do pay living wages to wait staff and have millions of successful restaurants. (And they can still be tipped for good service!)
It's so disgusting it's making me nervously laugh. We don't pay them enough so we're gonna guilt trip you into paying for their lives. This is basically...no, this is literally, slavery
In the 80's the US government decided to start taxing food servers on their tips. It was 8% of what you sold with the assumption you were being tipped at least that much by every customer. I worked at many different restaurants throughout the 80's and it really depended on where you worked. At Bob's Big Boy (a small diner chain) I made minimum wage and was lucky to make $20 in tips for a 6 hour shift, way under the 8% of what I sold. When it came time to file my taxes, even though I was considered poverty level, I still owed taxes because of the tips. On the other hand, at a restaurant in Malibu, I definitely made over the 8%. Just another case of income inequality. Plus none of those jobs offered healthcare or any other benefits so I was uninsured throughout my teens and early 20s. It's possible that things have changed for tipped employees, but I doubt it!
"Did you know that Uncle Sam taxes them on an assumed tip? Don't be a deadbeat. Tip these guys so we won't have to raise our food prices."
That's a strawman argument. Don't try to tell me that people not tipping much, or at all, will make YOU, the owner, pay the wait staff more.
Load More Replies...That's really depressing. Imagine working for a week and no one tips, WHAT HAPPENS THEN HMM!!!
This has always infuriated me and it needs to be changed immediately. It is time for people in America to stop subsidizing restaurants. If they close, so be it. The well run ones will survive and that’s the one I want to go to anyways!
Give an example of a well run restaurant. They are the ones that should have to pay a decent wage because they are the rich ones that pay crappy wages so they can live in million dollar houses. Maybe you should google the owners of those kind of restaurants and see what their lifestyle is like. It’s the small corner restaurant that needs help not the big ones.
Load More Replies...I never understood tipping. Aside from the fact that these places expect patrons to pay most of the salaries. Isn't the idea that what we pay for a meal is for the meal and for the server to bring to our table? Or the hairdresser to do the ver best job of cutting or coloring hair. We don't go to someone because they are a hack, so what is the tip for? A step above and beyond what we have agreed to pay for a good job. If there is no above and beyond, why are people still expected to pay a tip? Doesn't make any sense. We don't choose our hairdresser or the restaurant because it's bad or dirty or untalented... we choose it because it allegedly provides good service. Just thinking' out loud.
Yep. You know why they need this? Cause every single cent we’re paying is going into the boss’s big-a*s pocket, and barely touching the waitress/waiter/cashier’s who does a hell lot of work.
Been a while since I ate at a business with servers but I think servers should be paid a full minimum wage and customers should know this. July 1, 2019 in New Jersey the minimum wage for tipped servers is $ 2.63. WOW ! That sucks rocks!
Some of these could either receive an up vote, for bringing these to our attention, and a down vote for the stupid rules and regulations. Sometimes I am not sure which button to push!
The waitstaff at the restaurant I work would not like tips to be gone. They bring home at least $200 on weeknights and around $400 or more on weekends for working less than 6 hours. In order to match that their wage would have to be about $50 per hour. There is absolutely no way the business would be able to afford them without raising the prices to an unreasonable rate.
but if they raised their rates to that, and billed the customer... and we no longer tipped... there's no change. what's your point? the only people that really wouldn't benefit are... well... look at studies who get tipped the best.
Load More Replies...Low wages for restaurant workers are so that they don't have to pay so much taxes out of their income wages. I worked in a bar for 2.20 an hour, and with the tip I might as well have made 16 an hour (and it's a decent bar in a college town, nothing gross) but if I was listed at the hourly.i was making I would pay 23 percent of my wages per.hour to the gov. But low wages with tips makes sure I make more money without giving it to the government. Educate thyselves
That seriously pisses me off! How the he’ll did this b******t start! It’s like an indentured servant!
I'm a server and like to joke that I'm only friendly for money ! In all seriousness it's a physically demanding job and requires an insane ability to multitask. I can't remember birth dates or anniversaries, but I can keep track of 40 drinks in my 12 table station
That’s the way it works because there are cost and owners that risk to open a business with little margin and profit. I’m not talking about huge conglomerates, I’m talking small local eateries that we should all patronize. But instead, you go to McDonald’s for a 1.99 burger from an assembly line of ..... minimum paid workers ....
"Christian" company, closed on Sundays, but they don't pay their employees a living wage? WTH
Jobs like that were never meant to feed a family of four! but raise the minimum wage, and the whole restaurants will go out of business. Everybody out of a job. It's already happened to hundreds of restaurants where they did that.
Sure, it hurts to change a system, but is keeping an injust system in place forever better than making a switch to something that actually works ? Also, the state could help the shops for a transition period or something. It works in the rest of the world (source: living in Germany where you can get a normal income as a waitress/waiter. And there still are tips.).
Load More Replies...The service was so bad I didn't tip. The little putz came running, yelling after us in the parking lot with his hand out. Tipping is for good service only!
That's the way it should be. Evidently not in America. I like to visit the states regularly, but every single time it is so annoying to calculate the tips, or find the suggested amount highlighted on the check, or sometimes just added 20 / 22! % automatically. Fair paid and tips
Load More Replies...In New Zealand it is unlawful to pay less than the minimum wage and there is no tipping, - the staff do not need tips to survive and companies still manage to make enough money to grow.
This is a system I would love to have change. No tipping. Pay them what they're worth, charge what you must to make a REASONABLE living. If people can't afford your service that way, then you're charging too much.
It's legal to pay waitstaff below minimum wage because of tips. Some people think it's a great thing (those who work hard, get paid more) others think not (what about the dishwashers and people who bus tables?
You pay the food, the server and taxes separately? Is that right?
We tip the the United States. Other countries pay beginning wages and don't tip.
True, wait staff make minimum wage. And all the waitresses have a tale of woe. And at least one hungry kid at its grandmother's apartment. Good life planning again.
Paying someone a decent is wage isn't socialist or communist. Doesn't it strike you as odd that Amazon's Jeff Bezos owns 60 billions dollars after his divorce, but his employees rely on foodstamps to survive?
Load More Replies...I think you are missing the point. People do not care about having to tip waiters. They care that the company is paying them such low wages that an act that should reward outstanding service is being relied on as a baseline to to live off.

"commitment" may not be the issue here at all. 2 key points: 1. employer must be clear on the expectations of their staff, and hire accordingly. 2. employees must be clear on the expectations of their job, and behave accordingly. (if the boss agreed to let them go home 30mins early, 3 times a week, the boss needs to honour that agreement, or renegotiate with the appropriate notice). Besides, there are MANY solutions to this, that has nothing to do with how "committed" a person is to a job. eg shorter lunch breaks on the days she needs to leave early / longer days on the other days when she doesn't need to collect her kids / other staff can pick up overtime to cover the extra 30mins / ensure she completes her required tasks within her day, regardless of the length of the day. Often, it's about *productivity* while working, vs the hours working. (from a manager who fought to keep my VERY productive staff, who needed some compromises due to outside commitments)

Load More Replies...I feel like most of these are American issues. I live in the USA, and I'm so sick of everything wrong with our country. My 11 year old sister is already worrying about affording college, and I actually felt guilty for calling an ambulance for my mom when I found out how much it had cost. When I go to school, I automatically make a plan for how I would get out of an school shooting. It cost $300 for me to go to Urgent Care and find out I've had Tendonitis in my wrist for 6 months. And, compared to the kids being held in cages, my family is lucky. I'm hoping I'll be able to save enough money to go to college in Canada, and hopefully live there when I'm old enough. For now I just get to sit and watch while my country falls to pieces :(
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unless you immigrate to Canada you won't be able to avail yourself of most of the Candian public services. Also, the tuition rates for international students are usually 3 or 4 times the cost for a domestic student. And they still have to get extra health insurance or pay out of pocket in many provinces. Personally, I'd welcome you here - but it's harder than most folks think, so I guess start planning early? One of my American friends even married a Canadian after going to school here for years and she didn't qualify for permanent residence until she was in her 40s. She had to keep going to school (as an international student) for ages because she could only get a student visa - and no school means visa is over and she'd have to leave. We need a swap program where a pro-oil/gun/etc Canadian can just trade citizenship with a socialist American. :p

Dont' forget holodomir. I never will since my family actually died in it). The article does raise good points about the cost of ambulances, the injustices suffered by employees in the service sector and the shadiness of big government, but the idea that capitalism is our enemy is pretty ludicrous if you actually have any rudimentary knowledge of world history and economics.

I’m in poverty here, after struggling since age 15 to work in the “real world”, where your employer can abuse you to the point where you end up on disability (if you’re lucky; I COULD be homeless and worse off, but I suppose they could still drive me to that point with further social system cuts). What a shithole country. It is getting shittier by the month, as our current dumpster fire administration makes it even better to be rich and even worse to be poor. And yet, people support Trump and his cronies because they think he hates the same people they hate. No, the democrats weren’t fixing this s**t, either. Vote anti-corporate, or you will just be voting for more of the same. Under republicans, it’s like an impending disaster in realtime. Under democrats, it’s a boring dystopia that people are slowly acclimated to.
interesting because im neither wealthy or ultra privileged and am in fact a lower class immigrant from a formerly socialist country. i seem to enjoy the same freedom here as everyone else, and i can tell you that i would much rather live here than the country I moved here from (the USSR). it sounds like you might actually not know how bad other countries have it, possibly because you've lived in america your whole life. am i wrong? have you ever actually experienced life outside the US, and especially in a socialist country like cuba or north korea? curious to know

amen! I'm an immigrant and this offends me too. I love America. My family came here from the ussr. We fled a fascist socialist dystopia, a real one where people starved to death from man-made famines, a country where the government would send a miniature kangaroo court to your home and execute you in your backyard, labeling you a "kulak" (clenched fist) for not giving up all of your food and property to the government so your children can starve. These spoiled American brats have the nerve to complain about the US being "dystopic" and about how evil capitalism is when my family literally starved to death in their homes from a man made famine created by a bunch of socialists who believe in the same toxic ideology they do. If you think this is bad as an American imagine seeing this through the eyes of an immigrant who fled from socialism like I did. It's beyond disturbing

Capitalism is actually the only thing that is keeping us from having to stand in a bread line or have our roof collapse on our heads while we sleep like folks in socialist nations like Cuba do. I wish this site didn't always try to put a far-left twist on everything. You think the US is "dystopic" but you never saw and went through the things my family and I did in the USSR. Our dystopia made yours look like Beverly Hills!
How about making this a feature where the problems of certain counties are exposed? Then, our glorified views can be challenged.
