It’s practically a rite of passage to have at least one chapter of your life where you looked a little cringe.
And while those awkward years happen to almost everyone, most of us keep the photographic evidence locked away. The bad haircuts, the odd fashion choices—buried deep. But maybe they deserve a little more appreciation. After all, they’re the building blocks of personality and a great sense of humor.
On the subreddit “Blunder Years,” people embrace that philosophy, proudly posting their regrettable old photos for the world to see. Keep scrolling for the glorious proof and please, feel free to share your own.

Load More Replies...Sometimes, when I look at modern kids and teenagers, I sigh.
Not because they’re rowdy, messy, scary, or loud, but because they all look so good. With beauty tips, fashion trends, and endless tutorials right there on their phones, they seem to have skipped the part of life where we all looked a little… experimental.

Where are the glittery lip glosses from teen magazines that stuck to your hair in the wind? The DIY haircuts gone wrong? The capri leggings under dresses that stopped mid-calf for no logical reason?
Do they even get an awkward phase anymore?

This Is What "Rizz" Looked Like In The 90's
It Was 2007 And My Very First Car
I had a 960 and honestly, I felt the bomb, the 850 was a bit too racy for me so well done you!
You must be good at hitchhiking. With thumbs that long, why did you even want a car of your own?
Because honestly, everyone should. There’s nothing quite like it. An awkward phase is character-building. Those teenage years—the peak of questionable choices—are when we’re figuring out who we are. We try on different styles, interests, and friend groups like outfits. We defend opinions we’ll later outgrow. It’s messy, chaotic, and absolutely necessary.

Oh my gosh! I remember when those shirts were "in". High school, early 2000's.
My brother loved them (it was also his Elvis phase). I don't think they are that bad but my sister won't let him forget it's cringe.

Part of it comes down to biology. The prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for planning, decision-making, and impulse control, doesn’t fully mature until our mid-to-late twenties. Which means the impulsive decisions, the social uncertainty, and the cringe-worthy moments are all just part of growing up.
When I think back to my 18-year-old self, I sometimes wonder how on earth I thought or acted the way I did. And yet, I’d protect her in a heartbeat. She needed to go through all that trial and error to become me now.

Unfortunately they have come back in Australia in recent years, though not as big.
Load More Replies...And here’s the thing, it’s supposed to look bad in hindsight. Trends change. What was once the height of fashion eventually becomes the subject of group chats and meme folders. But in the moment? Those outfits and haircuts made us happy. We wore them proudly.
So when we look back and cringe, maybe we should actually be proud. It means we’ve grown, evolved our tastes, and refined our style.

In 2004, I Was Madly In Love With My First Laptop - An Acer Travelmate—and The Feeling Was Mutual
Owning a laptop in 2004 was like having a spaceship - a TARDIS for that matter. Look at the PCs in 2004 and imagine having THAT in your backpack! I wouldn't be this cringe, but I had my first one back then (a salvage from a fire) and was in love too. I don't think any other piece of technology will feel that special to me anymore.
DUDE I wrote an epitaph/obituary for one of my laptops in the early 2000s. The laptop had a name and everything (Little One the Sixth.) I loved all of my laptops dearly and absolutely anthropomorphized the hell out of them XD (My dad worked for IBM, so he got used laptops on the cheap in those days, which is why that one was Little One VI.) https://www.deviantart.com/lakotasilver/art/Little-One-VI-One-More-Try-5262235 little_one...ac94b4.jpg
Hey, acer makes some good laptops! My current laptop is an acer, it used to be my partner's but a handful of years back he gave it to me because he wanted a fancy gaming laptop. He got one of those trendy Alienware laptops and ho boy let me tell you those things are pieces of shiiiit. It just died within a year and the company was unable to fix or replace it. So he got another laptop, which he barely had a few months then the keyboard went wonky and the E key doesn't work (this one is from "Republic of gamers" which is a stupid name lol, even he admitted it). Now he's on his third laptop and the old acer he gave me (which is 8+ years old) is going strong
ROG is Asus. Shame; they're normally pretty decent (least they were when I was in the industry. I hope they still generally are as I'm using one right now, lol). Acer are pretty bomb-proof if they're not the super-cheap ones, I found. Having said that, I still have an Acer netbook bouncing around somewhere (remember when those were a thing?) that works, it'd be... over fifteen years old, as I gave it to my dad before he passed away. ... sorry. /endcomputernerd
Load More Replies...Of course, if your past self still makes you want to hide under a blanket, you’re not alone. And according to clinical psychologist Ellen Hendriksen, there’s a way to soften the blow of those memories.
“Give yourself a break,” she says.
The only reason we cringe at the memories is because we think we did something wrong or ridiculous. However, we can’t go through life without making mistakes. So permit yourself to experience the full range of human emotions.
I Swear To God, A Fellow Little Girl In Public Asked Her Mom If I Was A Rock Star In This Fit
Bleached My Roots Just In Time For Picture Day
Yes, Yes We Did Wear This To A High School Dance…
Hendriksen also points out that when we recall a cringe moment, we rarely remember the full story.
“Cringe attacks play a short movie clip: a split second of sneezing snot on your boss. The look on your friend’s face after you told that joke you didn’t realize was offensive. The few seconds it took your crush to say oh, um, sorry, she already had a date to prom,” she says.
“Expand the movie to include before and after to give your cringeworthy moment some context,” Hendriksen suggests. “Think about the other times you interacted with that teacher, hung out with that friend, or delighted in pining after your crush rather than zeroing in on the lowest of the lowlights.”

I'm all about letting kids experiment with their hair. It's temporary and let's them explore their own style in a safe way. My oldest is 12 and nb (afab). They've done a couple of what my parents would consider wild cuts (one was half-shaven, the most recent is buzzing it all off). They were nervous about both, but in the end, really liked both! I like the total buzz; it really suits their androgynous style!
My sister had a similar haircut when she was a bit younger than this. (Incidentally, the second most expensive haircut she's ever had) She grew it out about 12 months later because she was sick of people thinking she was a boy. Her MCR love didn't happen until after that though.

What Was I Thinking At 15 Years Old
Speaking Of Halloween Blunders
Yeah, I get cultural appropriation, but my dad was stationed in Korea right after I was born and a Korean officer became my Godfather in the 60s. He gifted me with Korean children's clothes which I later wore as a Halloween costume (when was I ever going to wear it otherwise?) complete with a black wig my mom made. Is this so terrible? Was not making fun of the culture and was glad to find a way to show off the clothes!
I was dressed one in a full men's kimono with the pants and getas. Had someone going cultural crusader on me until his boss (a japanese guy) who was organizing his company's float comes in and asks if I was ready. He shot his worker a look that could k**l Gojira and we left to quickly teach me the dance to do on the float in the parade.
We have bigger problems in the world than wearing clothing from a culture not your own.

My Friend And I Were Never Invited To Parties And We Didn’t Drink. So We Took These Photos And Posted Them To Facebook To Look Like We Did 😂
I remember going to a party with my best friend when I was 17, with a lot of the kids we didn't usually hang out with outside of school. Everyone seemed to be surprised that we were drinking, because we apparently acted like we wouldn't (and I guess because we were Christian). We had been to parties and drinking before that, though not more than a couple of drinks, but with a completely different crowd. My mum also insisted we get picked up at 10pm, whereas she had no problems with me staying at parties later in the past, because she thought it was a rougher crowd and it was in a hall in an area that was also 'more dangerous'. Her instincts were right for once, because not long after we were picked up gate-crashers turned up and a stabbing occurred. A lot of the guests had to be witnesses at court.

I recreated one of the most iconic photos of my childhood recently. Alas, 43-year-old Lakota no longer fits into the "jacket" that the toy was wearing, as Young Lakota could, but I tried to capture the same emotional essence XD I actually still have that stuffed animal, too! babykota_v...5d13d4.jpg
All I see are memories that made a part of these people who they are today. They are just snapshots of a moment in time. Some may be funny now or they may be embarrassed (they shouldn’t be) but we all have a past, that’s the joy in these things.
My "furry era" of my early 20s was definitely my "cringe era" XD I was really proud of the Lakota hat/ears, tail, and arms/paws though - I made them myself and I included a snap-closed opening in the armsleeves/paws so I could actually use my hands, as it's hard to manipulate a phone - or anything else - while wearing big fluffy gloves. XD I don't regret my furry era or the few furry conventions I went to, as I myself wasn't into the fandom for the, errr, gross aspects of it - I truly wish I was a wolf, some days :p califur_la...d5664d.jpg
I find the "fashionable uniform" a curious phenomenon. I teach at a community college, and a big % of students are coming in straight out of high school every year. Last Fall, I'd say at least 80% of female students showed up wearing the same thing: high waist retro "mom jeans" + black tanktop. (This year it was less than half.) I don't think I've ever seen that much widespread devotion to a single "look". I can't really relate. My closest attempt at being fashionable was 9th-10th grade, when I tried to adopt the "preppy" look: basically khakis and polo shirts. The older preppy kids were cool and had girlfriends. By 11th grade I a) realized that I am *not* remotely a preppy, and b) dressing a certain way won't actually make you cool and/or popular with the ladies. Fortunately, the prime alternative at the time was grunge: jeans, t-shirts, and (of course) flannel! I still wear that "style" today. Sometime in my early 20s I adopted Hawaiian shirts into my wardrobe as well.
I graduated in '80 and in my first year at college the preppy look was everywhere. It marked the end of the jeans and t-shirt, "Dazed and Confused" era and the beginning of the Reagan era. I hated it all and had no idea how to dress. Ugh, bad memories. Anyway - you can never go wrong with a Hawaiian shirt!
