In Sweden the tradition is for the man and woman to walk down the isle together to show that they enter in to marriage freely and as equals.

Sad for you because you don't get it. Do you have a child of your own? I'm a mom and I understand the emotion of the finality of it. Especially when a daddy and daughter are close.

My father was a rat who treated me like property. I walked down the aisle with my husband BESIDE me, because we are equals. I am no one's property.

There is no dress on here just emotion - cant understand the downvotes. Old tradition- fathers "GAVE" their daughters awayin marriage. It is a tradition in UK religious weddings - someone has to "give" the bride away

My dad had the absolute right to "give me away". . i was being passed from his care for 20 years into the care of another man. . There is a point when a dad has to give up an imaginary responsibility from a past generation.

Who said they are owned by their fathers then by their husbands? Nobody here, that’s for sure.

This is 2018, and when women and girls get a chance of a white wedding - or any big ceremony - they will want their dad walking them down the aisle if possible. They will want their dad holding their hand until the moment he exchanges his hand for the hand of the partner/husband/whatever. For now and forever etc

@Diana a: Not a single married woman I know was walked down the aisle by her father. They walked alone or together with the husband, the father was with all the other guests. If there was an aisle at all. And every woman wanted it just that way.

I moved out 13 years ago. Sometimes several hundred kilometers away. Since then, he hasn't been “right there for me every day“. And that's totally okay for both of us.

Diane, you probably should acknowledge, that most people on this world do not live in the US (or UK?) and that these wedding traditions you are talking about are not the same as in the rest of the world. You postulate a generality/universality here that is simply not universal.

In traditional church weddings it is only the father or a close family member who walks the bride down the aisle. nobody does it with the groom - he has his "best men"and best man at his side

I guess us girls are just helpless and need men to take care of us and apparently we aren't doing 'just fine' on our own. I walked down the aisle with my husband. We presented each other to our family, friends, and church to express our love. We gave ourselves freely, we didn't need anyone to 'give us away'.

In a ceremony it is the man who walks the daughter down the aisle and hands her hand over to another man. it is a fact and a tradition and is called "giving away". where the father resolves himself of future responsibility.

"giving the bride away" is nothing more than holding her hand on the way down the aisle and placing it in her new husbands hand from this day forward etc, Ceremonial and traditional and archaic. But not sexist or offensive.

Except the article clearly states these are the winners from WEDDING photos, you might want to rethink that assumption part.
