Arguing with the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and climate change deniers is a heck of a job. If you've ever tried, you’ll know what I am talking about.

And even though you recognize the fallacy in their arguments, like saying that masks don’t help to stop the coronavirus, you sometimes need heavy artillery.

Luckily, some people who know what they’re talking about have done everyone a service and stepped in to school the science deniers big time. From biochemists to sport scientists, these are some of the most mic-drop moves in stopping the spread of misinformation.

These days, when there are so many science deniers, it may feel like arguing with them is absolutely pointless. But a 2019 study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed that it’s in fact worth arguing with them.

Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments with 1,773 subjects. They assessed “how to mitigate the influence of a denier on the audience.”

The results showed that “not responding to science deniers has a negative effect on attitudes towards behaviors favored by science (for example, vaccination) and intentions to perform these behaviors.”

Facing deniers can be treated as a concerned and important effort to fight misinformation. The authors of the study suggest that “not turning up to the discussion at all seems to result in the worst effect.”

Meanwhile, showing up on an acquaintance's Facebook post, even if you think it's pointless, will surely do some good.

Interestingly, the authors claim that science deniers use the same rhetoric across domains. It means that “uncovering their rhetorical techniques is an effective and economic addition to the advocates’ toolbox.”

As an American who is an Engineer I really wish we would adopt SI Units. It is so annoying to have to deal with all different types of units on a daily basis. It is really unnecessary. And es I know the transition will be painful but I believe it would be very beneficial in the long run.

I agree with Nia. Pseudo Puppy, I don't know who hurt you, but your dead wrong. The "u" in colour was dropped over 200 years ago. Noah Webster gets the credit for most of the spelling changes that were adopted by the USA. In 1806 he published "A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language" and included the now equally correct spelling of "color".

fahrenheit makes no goddamn sense to me. i think it's fair that celsius starts at 0, because that's when water freezes, and everything below 0 is usually considered winter temperatures and very cold. above 0 is usually warmer, so in that sense i think it makes sense. i think revolving around 0 is smart too, because negatives count as colder temperatures, and positives count as warmer temperatures

Although we did learn the metric system in school I really really wish they implemented it more. I went on vacation in Canada last year and rented a car, it was extremely difficult for me to know how fast I was supposed to go so I literally just stayed with traffic because I honestly had no idea what speed I should be since I could not understand kilometers. The system Americans use really make us dumber than the rest of the world.

I always love pictures like this. More than 1/3 of the blue should be orange. Hundreds of millions of people use Fahrenheit alongside Celsius. Also, millions of people even outside the US know and use American imperial for measurements. Ask a British person not in the medical or scientific fields how tall they are, they won't automatically say "170 cm..." no, more likely you'll hear 5' 6". Ask a Indian how fast his motorcycle goes and he'll say 120 miles and hour. In the Caribbean they use Dollars as well as EC.

Fahrenheit is more accurate - more units to measure with. Case in point: 0 Celsius = 32 Fahrenheit; 100 C = 212 F. I'm saying the rest of the world is wrong, just making a simple point. :-)
