People have the best knowledge of what they have experienced and to be more aware of what is going on outside their life’s bubble, they have to interact with people who are different from them and to actively search for that information.
Otherwise, they might make themselves oblivious and out of touch with reality, which could make them look stupid in front of others. Ignorance is not bad in itself as it is impossible to know everything, but sometimes it is hard to believe how certain knowledge has not reached a person.
Not realizing that there are people who can’t afford a house or having gaps in general education are some things Redditors considered to be common knowledge that doesn’t belong just to a single society group, but they were wrong and told some funny and frustrating stories answering the question “What did somebody say that made you think: ‘This person is out of touch with reality?’”

I’m a nanny and I’ve worked for some rich clients. Old money. These people know nothing about reality.
The best one I heard was this family I was working 12 hour days for. Good pay, terrible schedule. At one point I was bouncing their baby on my knee and the Mom goes “Being a mom isn’t that hard. I don’t know why other women complain about it so much”.
While her nanny is literally caring for the baby.
Pretty much any time I see someone yelling at a Starbucks or other service employee. They come into a crowded shop, wave their big $5 bill around like a high roller, then yell at a 16 year old for making their coffee incorrectly. Lame. If you find yourself to be one of the people yelling at service workers, fix your own problems before telling other people what to do.
Why should they? That kind of attitude has always worked, so why change now? When I became a manager in retail at a theme park, I was finally able to get revenge on those assholes. And I will take up for any service worker getting abused.

You are even entitled to the opinion that certain Presidents/Prime Ministers are good/bad at their jobs because you can narrow your opinion down to very slim frames of reference (BoJo *was* the right guy to get Brexit done (unfortunately)). But you do NOT get to opine on whether the Earth is flat or whether vaccines work effectively.

I just realized too, this can be a good example of two different types of intelligence. Intelligent people can admit when they are wrong, and emotionally intelligent people can admit when someone else was right. Both are important to be truly wise. I'm still working on both of them myself, but I've gotten better!

Yeah my husband still hasn't learned that just because you're entitled to your own opinions, that it doesn't mean you're A. Basing them off of fact, personal experience/knowledge or anything that makes them true. B. That just because you don't fully understand something yet you feel as if you know enough to have a strong opinion on it, that it doesn't mean it's true and C. That sometimes it's okay to just say "I don't have an opinion on that because I don't know enough about it to form an educated, rational opinion on it that is based on learning both sides of the argument being discussed" ... that s**t bothers me so much.

Yes, this! I get into arguments with the bf where I'm presenting facts. Like water is composed of two molecules of hydrogen and one of oxygen. And he will have a differing opinion and tell me that im welcome to my opinion but that's his. I try to explain fact vs opinion....sigh.
I have started prefacing conversations like this by asking them if I provide evidence proving they are wrong are they willing to change their mind? If they answer no I don't bother. I don't want to waste my talking to a wall. I have had lot of No's. Mostly from conservative Christians.

A belief is acceptance of a datum without inspection. Facts can be altered, omitted, enforced, denied to put a spin on things. Assertions may or may not be truths. As most all facts that come at us from unknown sources are assumed to have a spin, it is well within an individual's right to refuse to believe "facts" if he has not inspected them. The right to think for oneself is the most precious of human rights as without it, all other rights are meaningless. To state "it is my opinion" is far more honorable a statement than "I'll blindly accept YOUR facts". Truth is an individual quality, not a group phenomenon despite what schools and some other organizations would have you believe.
How do you know the person presenting the facts had ALL the relevant facts? How do you know none of the facts had an altered importance? How do you know some of those facts were not added inapplicable facts? You don't! Most people who state they have facts are simply stating assertions. And an assertion is rarely a fact. In stating "it's my opinion" the individual Is admitting he has not looked at the data closely enough and will make (or not make) the judgement the other wants him to make. In that regard he is more honest! Truth is an individual thing. Enforced truths, such as taught in schools, are the route to slavery as every disappeared civilization can attest. A friend of mine in college was absolutely shocked when I and several other friends pulled out our childhood/hometown public library cards at dinner one night. She could not fathom that all of our families went to the library regularly when we were growing up and that this is an extremely common experience for a lot of people. My aunt is a bit into that. She's done really well for herself but has forgotten that not all of us are retired engineers who play the stock market for funsies part time. She suggested Thanksgiving at my place one year, and I had to remind her that I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment and inviting around 15 people there wasn't going to work.
I was involved in a nonprofit for women in my last city maybe 2 years back. My ex (we were 27 at the time) was from a rich area of the state, and the mean income for this area was $31k. A teacher talked about how 500+ kids in her school were homeless, abs how seniors would pool their money together to get a hotel for days or weeks at a time.
I remember telling my ex about it, and how awful that’s gotta be to be 17 and living with 10 others in a hotel. He said “they’re stupid. If they had any brains, they’d buy a house so they could get equity; the hotel is just them throwing their money away and not getting anything from it.” He was 100% stuck that these 17 year olds, with no addresses, who are MINORS, can apply and qualify for a mortgage. I fussed at him and don’t regret it, because he is so out of touch with reality. Eventually he went on months later to say he talks down about other people and acts like he’s better than everyone because he is better than everyone.
Edit to add: to clarify, he suggested the high schoolers should all buy a house, not my organization. Household income was about 10k higher than individual. His parents were loaded, so he never had to really pay for anything until after college, and even then he didn’t have to pay for housing for the first 3 years of his career, and even still, 95% of his (nice) furniture and everything was given to him. It’s very easy to brag about your 401k when you NEVER had to allocate money towards rent, loans, etc.

The one about borrowing money and never being able to pay it back is a fair point. Because easy credit is offered does not make it a good move to take it, in fact it is usually not. Debt does matter and a borrower with sound morals will at least make an effort to pay it back.

My boss is rich. He owns a few houses to include a really nice apartment in NYC. His daughter lives there for free. She's not required to have a job and has an unlimited credit card and gets a new Macbook for Christmas every year. One night she took a private gig bartending a party thrown by a billionaire. The only thing she had to do all night was pour wine. They paid her a few grand. When she got home to her dad's apartment, he was in town for the weekend, she said to him, "Wow Dad, now I know how the other half live." Um honey, you ARE the other half. Growing up, we categorize these rich people into two categories. People and marks. Yeah I'm not much of an upstanding citizen growing up. You do what you can to eat and a well gamed mark can keep you and your friends fed for a while.
Anyone can be rich. Just pick the right skin color, have wealthy parents and influential friends, be good looking, attend a top notch school, pick the right country to be born in, make sure you are male ... Just don't understood why everyone does not do these simple rules for success.

You must be very lucky then. I have lived in europe all my life and I am poor as f**k. In Spain unemployment is rampant, salaries are extremely low and many kids go to school without food. In the netherlands you need to pay a extremely expensive insurance (minimum 95 euros a month) to even get any health care and not get a huge fine. Here in belgium if you are a migrant and disabled like me you get nothing, only threats and lies from the government. The only reason why I am not in the streets is because my partner has a job and cares for me.

When the United States legalized same-sex marriage, and Americans said they were going to emigrate to Canada. 1) Canada and Norway are the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage 2) You have to apply to emigrate to Canada. It takes years and tons of paperwork, and you still might be rejected.

Some of these were funny... But the ones making fun of teens for not knowing how the world works were kind of sad. Like... they're still kids, they're pretty new here, they only know what they've been taught and exposed to, which is a reflection of their schools and caretakers, not of their intelligence. Like, yeah, a 16 year old should know these things, because someone should have taught them. What, do you think they learn how the world is by osmosis? Just because they have access to social media doesn't mean their phones can auto download all necessary knowledge into their brains. They have to know what to look for to learn on their own, and lots of times that takes considerable life experience. Stop ragging on literal children for not knowing things.

Load More Replies... The one about borrowing money and never being able to pay it back is a fair point. Because easy credit is offered does not make it a good move to take it, in fact it is usually not. Debt does matter and a borrower with sound morals will at least make an effort to pay it back.

She's not required to have a job and has an unlimited credit card and gets a new Macbook for Christmas every year. One night she took a private gig bartending a party thrown by a billionaire. The only thing she had to do all night was pour wine. They paid her a few grand. When she got home to her dad's apartment, he was in town for the weekend, she said to him, "Wow Dad, now I know how the other half live." Um honey, you ARE the other half. The next time he was in the office after that he told this story to every employee. He literally told the story like 20 times. Most of his employees can barely afford their rent.

Work customer service for a major retailer that uses gift cards, which are treated as cash. No word of a lie, when client told me that they had gotten the gift card and mailed it out, after receiving,their response to being told we wouldn't refund it was "That's like watching my mother being raped. Picture you're mother being raped. PICTURE YOUR MOTHER BEING RAPED...." Over and over til I hung up.
Growing up, we categorize these rich people into two categories. People and marks. Yeah I'm not much of an upstanding citizen growing up. You do what you can to eat and a well gamed mark can keep you and your friends fed for a while.
Anyone can be rich. Just pick the right skin color, have wealthy parents and influential friends, be good looking, attend a top notch school, pick the right country to be born in, make sure you are male ... Just don't understood why everyone does not do these simple rules for success.
I have a feeling that it was mostly about America and their situation. and it's scary. I'm happy to live in Europe. the American dream is not as sweet as people here often imagine.
You must be very lucky then. I have lived in europe all my life and I am poor as f**k. In Spain unemployment is rampant, salaries are extremely low and many kids go to school without food. In the netherlands you need to pay a extremely expensive insurance (minimum 95 euros a month) to even get any health care and not get a huge fine. Here in belgium if you are a migrant and disabled like me you get nothing, only threats and lies from the government. The only reason why I am not in the streets is because my partner has a job and cares for me.
