Babysitter Reveals Why She Never Accepts Children Who Are Asleep, And Every Babysitter Should Read It
According to a recent survey, 74% of parents in USA hire a babysitter at least once a month. The great majority of them pick the babysitter for their children very carefully – it is only natural that parents worry before letting someone else take care of their child. But sometimes it’s not the parents who worry, but rather the babysitters themselves as some parents, according to one babysitter, are hard to trust.
Internet user Twatermellon shared a story of one former daycare employee who had one strict policy that the babysitters had to adhere to and explained the reason behind it. Scroll down to see what this babysitter had to tell. (Facebook cover image: Mad Ball)

Share on FacebookI have to admit this hadn't really occurred to me: when I saw the headline I thought it would be because a child waking up in different surroundings with different people from when they went to sleep might panic.
That's good to know but ... Damn it world, what the hell is wrong with you?!!
My thoughts exactly. It's just really sad and alarming that this even needs to be a tip for sitters and daycare workers.

To me this should be a serious criminal offence as well. As for Vonskippy, this isn't about panicking over every "little" thing , it's about a serious crime being committed, and protecting our most vulnerable citizens from such a monsterous act. Stop being such a jerk.
Load More Replies...I actually know someone who runs a home daycare that had a very bad experience because of this. Parents dropped off sleeping child in the morning, after 2 hours child did not wake up and could not be woken up, she called 911. Hospital determined that the child had been forcefully struck in the head, hours earlier, baby died 2 days later on life support. It came out at the trial that the parents dropped child off at babysitter, so that when the problem was discovered, babysitter would be blamed. Fortunately, doctors were able to determine that injury occurred hours before the child was dropped off. These particular parents had been in trouble with the authorities before for harming a child, although that child survived, he was disabled for the rest of his life and relegated to the foster system permanently until he was adopted. I do wonder about our system that these parents weren't more closely monitored after injuring one child previously so badly.
Could you imagine being the parent that finds out your own mother has been drugging your child when she was babysitting.
aint it a sad world we live in when people have to anticipate this level of shittery.
OMG! Ok, I don't like kids, so I made sure I never had any. And I don't know how kids act, unless they are screaming crying brats in the store. But I THOUGHT you were going to say that if a baby/kid is asleep, not to take them, because when they DO wake up in the day care center, they might really freak out, not knowing where in the H they are, Mom and Dad are not there, and they'd really start crying. I didn't even think the reason had to do with abuse. How sad! People who do this should be strung up and shot in a town's square! Yeah, maybe I seem harsh, and I dislike kids a LOT, but I sure would NEVER hurt one, and hearing that child abuse in all these forms really pisses me off!! I'll get off my soapbox now, thanks for listening to me rant! I just had to get that out!
What the actual ffffff. Here in my naive mind i was thinking it was because the child would be upset waking with strangers somewhere else. How horrid can someone be to drug their own grandchild/child!?!? That seriously makes me so freaking angry!
This is so so sad. This has sadly happened in my own family. My baby cousin (who is 5 now) was fed medicine to make him sleep instead of actually feeding him when he was baby. His mother was a teen who had a lot of issues and couldn't cope with raising a child. His father was also a teen and too doped up on drugs to care. His grandparents have custody of him now and he's doing better but because of this it's very hard to get him to eat. Even if he hasn't eaten all day he'll only have a few bites of bread or something and say he's full. He is the sweetest little boy and it kills me when I pick him up and he doesn't weigh anything. His 3 year old cousin weighs more than he does.....
I have worked in pharmacy and know there is a baby sedative elixir you can legally buy in the UK from any chemist. Officially it is for travel sickness nausea allergies and "insomnia" but also used as "knock-out-drops" (suitable for children from 2 years old) - but often used for younger babies - technical name is promethazine hydrochloride. We had to be very aware of who was repeatedly buying it and could refuse to sell to them it if we thought it was likely being abused. Us pha girlrmacy workers had alot of training and knew when things were being used for the wrong reason - like the severely underweight teenage girls who bought half a dozen packs of laxatives every Saturday
for instance a pharmacy has to refuse to sell a medication they know is going to be used for an animal. you have to pay 5x the price for basic Piriton from a vet £2.50 at the Chemist £20 from the vet for the same thing. Dog has puppies and very sore teats - you cant buy £1.99 Canendula nipple cream if you tell them it is for a dog. The Vet will let you have it for £15. Most basic human medications are suitable for animals - treat as for a 2 yr old child, and dont tell the pharmacist who you are buying for

A baby was asleep after leaving day care so parent carried the infant indoors and let sleep. The baby died because of the positioning of the head in the casual had blocked airway. The things that people do though should not surprise me. I have known of parents sedating their little ones, and when I was nursing, Friday or Saturday afternoon we used to have parents arrive at emergency with an ill or injured infant, only so upon admission, the parents were child free for the night or even weekend! I was shocked when told of this happening. This was in the days before ultrasounds and scans. Burns were common injuries because of the risk of infection, the child would undoubtedly be admitted. It is sickening how parents can cause their child harm. Without proof the situation was accepted as an “accident” unless parents were presenting too often.
I, Unfortunately, know someone who neglected to take their child to the doctors when the baby was sick and dropped her off at daycare "sleeping". I dont know 100% of the story as to how the events took place but the Baby passed away sadly and the mom tried to blame it on the sitter. Turns out, it was her fault to begin with. Side note, Dont leave your children in carseats asleep, poor babies can die that way!
I had a different situation but still not right and unfair on the child and myself. I babysat for a about a 9 month old who was asleep when I arrived. The family were originally from India or maybe Pakistan. Anyway the baby woke up and I tried to soothe it and sang to it, and talked to him obviously but he was impossible to settle so rang the parents who came back early and they were'nt happy about it but it turned out the baby never heard English
OMG! I had heard something similar to this this near where I live! After my mother retired from her career several years ago she got bored and decided to start volunteering at the local hospital helping the nurses "chart" incoming patients, basically helping with paperwork. She told me this one time this woman that kept coming in with a 2 year old that she couldn't "wake up". The lady kept screaming and calling her friends and family and making a big show of it. The doctors and nurses got suspicious and called social services. Long story short, she had been dosing the baby and feeding off of the attention she got, it was Munchhausen by Proxy syndrome. This happened on my mom's first day of volunteer work.
Sadly Munchhausen by Proxy is rather common with children and the elderly. It is horrid how some people abuse the people they supposedly love.

My friend did an exchange study work thing and worked in a daycare in the States, and they had a similar thing happen to them :( Parents brought in a child who was sleeping, couldn't be woken up, turned out the parents drugged him to bring him in so he wouldn't cry.
Wow, I never even thought about that when I was working in child care. Something I will definitely remember!
Me neither, one of my daughters works In Child Care, I will mention it to her. It is really sad that anyone would do such a thing.

This is shocking I mean I'm not a child person but to go to the extent of drugging a baby is crazy. Why did granny agree to babysit if she's just going to drug the poor mite like easy money? That poor babysitter too I would have been terrified to know I was close to getting blamed for someone else's s**t parenting
what would make u possibly do such a thing? some people need some milk and some help
There needs to be a balance. This fear mongering culture is getting too much. There's men who won't date for fear being accused of rape, now baby sitters won't work for fear of accusation of murder. Waking up the kids is very good advice though. It brings the risks way down. Maybe some kind of review network would be useful too. Like, parents would need reviews to hire a new baby sitter. This is all so confusing!
JEEZ! In this day and age; if you get pregnant and don't want it GET AN ABORTION!
I understand this whole deal, but what of babystitting a small kid who needs a daily nap? :/ How are we to proceed that, if we refuse to babysit while baby sleeps?
I think she means she refuses to accept a baby that is being dropped of asleep. I think she just needs to know that the baby is alive and well when the baby is being delivered into her care. I dont think she means babies arent allowed to sleep when she babysits..
