Even the best zoos are terrible environments for elephants. In the wild, the mother would have see other babies being born, and had the opportunity to be a "nanny" or "auntie" to the babies (they're a very matriarchal society). Probably one of the best groups on the planet today dealing with elephants is Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. They rescue orphan elephant babies (and several other animals, including a rhino), raise them, and teach them about how to live in the wild so they can return to their natural lives. Astoundingly, the bonds they form with their humans are so close that they often return from the wild to have their wild-born babies in the safety and presence of the people who raised them. I donate to them regularly. The stories are amazing, from heartbreak to triumph. When you try to live your life right, and yet it's still not enough...sigh. This is one of the reasons why I'm worried about returning to the US to live now. Before I left to move to China, I had a full time job, but I still couldn't afford my own apartment. For the first time in my life, I had to rent a room in a person's house. That, combined with a car note, car insurance, medical insurance, student loan payments, etc, it was impossible for me to survive with one job. So I wound up driving Lyft (rideshare) in the evenings after my full-time job. And it still wasn't enough. :-(

Im a full time teacher and have FOUR jobs total to make ends meet. Barely.

Where do you live? In my area they start at 65K a year with just a BA and no experience, a MA with no experience starts at 73k, and can early 119K maxed out pay after 23 years. Not including benefits. Though we have one of the worst performing public school systems in the country, so not sure we are getting our money's worth

Yes, and it's all due to one thing : human overpopulation.

On this scale forests appeared less than 6 months ago (plants a bit longer) - being blunt the only ones that care we are screwing up life on Earth is us, life will recover and go on (it's survived worse) and the planet doesn't give a sh1t.

My company fired a woman because she was working at another company on Saturday's (my company doesn't work weekends). She made our company look like she was not paid enough. That's so twisted. That woman works full time in that other company, but with way less salary to make ends meet.
