A series of governments have but fundamentally you are right - it started with the idiot Reagan and his (and other's ) belief, that 'trickle down' economics would be the best way to enrich everyone, which has turned out to be a complete load of bullshit and only enriches those who either had wealth in the first place or came up with an idea to generate unimaginable wealth through tech or dodgy dealings (see Senators / Congressmen / Politicians (mostly Rep) .... You need a revolution or a way to rip up your current way of doing things otherwise it will only get worse ....

It strikes me as odd that nearly three out of four Americans claim to want nationalized health care, along with various other progressive policies, yet they consistently vote for the party that's virtually guaranteed to never give them those things.

The people who voted in that government also failed you.

We failed ourselves by electing those bought-and-paid-for shills, IMO.

Damn, I am really sorry you are going through this. Losing your husband is certainly bad enough, but now your home too...you are 100% right, it's not fair at all. I hope something good is in store for you, I really, really do. All my best, for whatever that's worth.

Alvin, I'm sorry to hear this. I was at the hospital yesterday with my husband. He has terminal cancer and it's friggin hard to deal with. Thank god all expenses are paid here too (France). I wish you well and send you a Hug.

The government doesn't bankrupt you.

The story in this thread about Alex Smith (telling about needing insulin) will pretty much explain American insurance. You have a deductible to meet and most insurances only pay a certain percentage of the total expense which leaves you to pay the balance. Depending on the total...it can be impossible. Sometimes people in this country will owe tens of thousands of dollars for medical expenses and that can be after insurance pays their part. It’s sad and sickening.

Because no one wants to pay for an insurance plan that covers everything. It would exist, in theory, but the monthly premium everyone would have to pay would be outlandish. So they market it more cheaply with a cost-share to the person who carries it. Someone who never goes to the doctor, for instance, and is healthy doesn’t want to pay $1000/mo for a service they don’t use. And then you get people who say “why is my premium paying for my neighbor’s illness when my neighbor smokes or is obese” or recently “why is my premium rising to pay for hospital stays for my neighbor who refused a covid vaccine. I shouldn’t have to pay for his stupidity”. Etc etc

Okay, the US may be awful in many ways, but do you have any idea the conditions that many people who try to immigrate here are coming from? People coming to the US are fleeing places like Haiti and Afghanistan, where many are literally starving and you can be murdered in the blink of an eye by violent gangs or the Taliban, and no one will bat an eyelash. Some people on BoredPanda just love hyperbole and have absolutely no sense of reality or perspective. Honestly, think before you type because this is just... ugh. It is highly illegal for hospitals to do this, and I've never, ever heard of a single one doing this. There is a single, standard fee that is charged for every procedure, which applies to every person equally. Hospitals do not pull each patient aside, scan their financials, and then determine what they will charge. EDIT: I should add, just because it's wildly illegal and wrong, and I've never experienced it, I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it has happened.
