When I was in grad school I lived below a family with several young kids. The mother was great and we got along well. She was always apologetic about kid noise, but I didn't really mind. The compromise that worked for us was that it was ok for me to play an amplified guitar, as long as it wasn't late, because her kids liked it and would dance to it when they could hear it.bluewolfgirl reply
Joan of Arc’s trial was known to be tedious as the Church tried their hardest to find grounds for a conviction. In an attempt to trick her, she was asked whether she knew if she was in God’s grace. Since the Church believed no one was able to know if they were truly in God’s grace, either a yes or no could be condemnable. She responded by saying, “If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me”. Reports on the trial say that the court was stupefied by her deft answer. It was basically a mic drop in the face of the Church at the hands of what they saw as an illiterate and heretic farm girl.Kenobi_01 reply
Anytime someone says "Well, by the standards of the time, it was okay." When talking about an atrocity or horrific practice. It usually means "By the standards of the people doing the atrocity." For example, Slaves *knew* the Slave trade was evil. But when we say "People thought it was okay" we arent counting the slaves as being people. The victims of history are voiceless, even if our sensibilities have evolved over time. We try to justify things by saying 'they couldn't have known' and almost always ignore a large group of people who certainly did know. Art

In New Zealand it is normal to be barefoot in public. In the mall, the supermarket, fast food places etc. It's even normal for kids to go to primary school barefoot. It's recognised this is unusual and has become a point of national pride for some people. Don't get me wrong, it's not like everyone is doing this, but it's a noticeable minority and would be seen on a daily basis, even in winter.Show All 25 Upvotes

It was at a convention center and the college hockey game was next door. Once the game ended some drunk guy came in and started eating scones and went to the bar and pounded about 5 free beers before security kicked him out, he stuffed scones in his pockets while being escorted to the door. I was never invited to my reunion but hitting that reunion after the hockey game was awesome, I'll never forget the taste of those pocket scones.Show All 15 Upvotes
