In 2020, it feels like we’ve reached a new level of tension. Nearly everyone’s talking about the possibility of World War Three breaking out. Meanwhile, Australia’s still on fire, with devastating consequences.
To show you just how serious the situation is, Bored Panda collected a list of images that prove that things are absolutely terrifying in the Land Down Under. Scroll down and let us know in the comments which images of the Australian bushfires left their mark on you. And if you’re currently in Australia, dear Pandas, let us know what the situation is like and stay safe.
When you’re done with this post, have a read through Bored Panda’s other articles about the Australian fires. Including about a hero dog who finds koalas who survived the bushfires, how the Irwin family already helped 90,000 animals, as well as a historian’s explanation of what’s going on in the country right now.

To Our Nation's True Heroes - The Thousands Of Firefighters Currently Battling Fires Across Our Country, We Thank You From The Bottom Of Our Hearts
I chose to always remember these stories as well as horrible news. Most people in the world are like this, when faced with a challenge. Governments may not be, but people are inherently good. We just need to frame that as well, and remember. Always look for the helpers in times of dispair, as Mr. Rogers said. Always look for the helpers. 💓🙏
Most of them are volunteers!!! And not getting paid! Shame on Australia!! Shame!!
Really they are national heroes. Respect for them. https://betbaji.com/
And our creepy prime minister said they do this because they like it!

The only good about the worst is that it often brings out the best.
Since The Fire Has Passed Through Mallacoota This Amazing, Selfless Young Guy Has Been Out Searching For Injured Wildlife. This Is One Of 7 Koalas He's Saved So Far
This photo has to be seen around the world, so that everyone knows what it means to be a caring human being.
The Australian bushfires devastated the country and its ecosystem, leaving around half-a-billion animals dead. Meanwhile, around 14 million acres (21,875 square miles) of land is scorched, and hundreds of thousands of Australians have been displaced. It’s a disaster of end-of-the-world proportions.
We’re often told that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure to be seen from space. However, the bushfires in Australia are so extensive that even satellites orbiting the Earth can spot the smoke and flames.
You can donate towards disaster relief and recovery efforts like the Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul Society, and the Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades Donations Fund to make a change and to help Australians affected by the bushfires.
The Kangaroo Is Drenched In Water After Approaching A Human For Help
you know it's serious when wild animals ask human for help, my heart breaks for all inhabitants of great southern land
It's fascinating that they seem to understand humans=help, because usually humans=run away and hide.

I’ll bet that little baby was so happy to find a safe place to get some much needed sleep. Kudos to the firefighter who rescued him/her.
Poor sweet little ring-tailed possum. So glad it was saved and hope it survived.
Thank you, I was wondering what kind of animal she/he is.
Load More Replies...So so many animals very sad situation for animals/ humans alike ! God bless you
They are definitely the super heroes of Australia. The world thanks them.
There's just something especially heartrending about animal suffering. I think it's because they always suffer the most. Twenty-seven human lives lost, yet half a billion animals. How is that even possible?
Sadly, if they don't die in the fire, they are hunted down and brutally killed by other "human" beings. Heartbreaking.
Load More Replies...These 3 pictures together say so much. Those amazing firefighters, smiling at one seemingly small positive in such a vast amount of awfulness, and that beautiful Possum (?) in what must have been a terrifying situation for him, grateful for the fireman’s kindness. Quite Literally Watching Your World Burn
https://www.abc.net.au/4corners/pumped/8727826 - this is what NO-ONE in Australia will talk about right now. Our water is being stolen. Our governments have just started using the term "climate change" because itstill sounds better than " we sold your water." Our rivers are drying up, up water tables are plummeting, our bush is drier than it has ever been, fish are dying - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd11cdYzIwg - they wouldnt let this guy be on their panel, but he spoke up anyway. We need the world to hear this and to shame our government into addressing this.
At least he's got his dog … and he may consider himself extremely lucky for all that.
Permaculture Design was founded in Australia: a way to recover and become a truly resilient country and show the world. Nothing can stop the strength, courage and beauty of Australia. This is an invitation to regenerative design, which creates stable resilient homes that withstand fire.
Watching the world burn.....learn about what can be done so this will NEVER happen again; get involved; be careful whom you vote into the government, whom you'll give power to run your country. This is the problem everywhere in the world, corrupt politicians who are selling out OUR land.
But what are the other effects that the calamity has had? Well, for one, Australians are becoming jaded with their government and showing their anger. 20-year-old Zoey Salucci McDermott refusing to take prime minister Scott Morrison’s hand perfectly encapsulates the country’s anger. “I’ll only shake your hand if you give more funding to the Rural Fire Service,” she said.
Meanwhile, the transport minister in New South Wales, Andrew Constance, told the media that "this is not a bush fire. It's an atomic bomb."
But there is a silver lining to the smoky clouds rising over the Land Down Under: the bushfires are bringing out the best in some Australians. People are showing what they’re worth by helping out their neighbors, rescuing animals, and doing what they can to stop the fires from spreading further.
This Fire Fighter (And All Ff’s) Saving The People, Animals, And Homes In Australia
How many of these mighty volunteers don´t get enough credits for their kindness??
and unfortunately our Prime minister is a Douche' and only recently pledged money to the Rural Volunteer Fire Brigade BUT only for people that have jobs. Anyone on Government benefits had them suspended, because they are not out looking for gainful employment. If that isn't the biggest FU to them fighting, then I do not know what is.
Load More Replies...These volunteers are our lifelines ,they don’t get enough recognition for their dedicated work
I read that as a lot of the volunteers are unemployed people, they've had their benefits stopped because they're not able to fulfill the looking for work criteria - I hope that information is wrong.
After Spotting A Koala Crossing A Road Amongst The Flames A Woman Rushed To The Animal’s Aid, Wrapping It In Her Shirt And Pouring Water Over It
Poor babies. They don't understand why or what's happening to their homes. Breaks my heart.
will never forget sounds of this poor Koala screaming in agony. It was so heartbreaking R.I.P. little one
She made a valiant effort for the koala. If the little koala didn't make it, it wasn't because of lack of effort.
I remember this story from about a month or so ago. The woman was with a news team and the rescue was caught on video. In the first picture above, the poor little guy was so disoriented that he sat in a small fire patch. His cries when the woman started pouring water in his burnt body still haunts me. Here's a link to the original BP: https://www.boredpanda.com/woman-saves-koala-bushfire-new-south-wales/
This woman is a hero. sadly, that beautiful creature did not survive his injuries :-(

My Family Have Been Fighting These Fires On Our Farm And Our Community Nonstop For Over A Month
This is a picture of my Dad getting 5 mins sleep on our front lawn, while my brother keeps watch over the fire burning at the top of our farm after he finished his 10th 12 hr+ day in a row fighting voluntarily in the community with the RFS NSW.
My family have been fighting these fires on our farm and our community nonstop for over a month. They are tired, they are sore, and they are running out of resources.
Today I heard my Dad cry, he said “Jen I have never seen anything like this, it’s never ending”
We still have over 50 days of summer left we aren’t even half way and there is currently no end in sight.
Please don’t become numb to what’s happening. Don’t get caught up in the negativity, the politics, the facebook news, the drama!
Australia is on fire and there are brave people all over the country VOLUNTARILY fighting day in, day out to keep our lives and homes safe.
These firefighters need our support more than ever!
This should be our one and only focus.
To all of the people helping directly and indirectly around the country Thank you! To everyone else don’t forget to donate what you can to your charity of choice, every little bit will help! This is far from over!
To my family, I can not express how proud I am of you all! I love you and am forever thankful
I wish I could get there with food stores. I'd like to cook for the people put out of their homes and for first responders/firefighters.
Donate, donate , donate . Every little bit helps

I live in British Columbia, Canada. If I could sprout wings and fly I would be there right beside you, fighting this horrible tragedy that is happening. Tip, make sure to donate directly to these small animal rescue groups in Australia. Don' go through the big guys, the people and Animals will Only get a portion of your donation. Do your homework, search for the groups that are on the ground working, the people and especially the Animals! Love to all in Australia!
We can only give money because taking things down there will only cause more problems. we gave to WIRES, the official animal donation site.
So sad... and they are breathing the smoke, which can't be good either!
In fact, the entire world’s reacting to the situation as best as it can. People from half-a-world away are donating what they can to help the people of Australia. While even celebrities are taking steps to secure funding for firefighters.
For instance, comedian Celeste Barber raised 24 million Australian dollarydoos (nearly 17 million US dollars) for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. The best female tennis player on Earth, Ashleigh Barty, promised to donate her Brisbane International prize money winnings worth 250,000 US dollars. The event starts Monday. US singer Pink and actress Nicole Kidman both pledged 500,000 dollars to Australian fire services.

Exhausted Firefighters In Australia
Bravest people on earth! Firefighters never get enough recognition for their efforts.
Heroes sleeping. I can’t imagine how horrifying this must be for all Australians. Their homes, crops, animals, ecosystems, everything is on fire.
The firefighter on the left is only 16 years old! All our bushfire fighters are volunteers. Take note, the rest of the world! Our scientists have been telling our government for years that climate change would hit Australia first and hardest, as we are the driest inhabited continent on earth. Yet we are the country doing the least, because of the power of the fossil fuel industries here. This is just the beginning if we continue to deny the reality of climate change.
That stupid PM has got no idea has he put him in the fire ground and see how he goes. He would not last a day.
These poor men and women they need some time off to get some sleep, they have been going non stop for weeks

Australia Fires
I have an uncle who has been doing this: for free, since he was 12. He’s now in his 80’s. What can you say about men like this?
When your own Government slashes $39 million from your budget, you get to walk though Hell...
I would love to put this person on my shoulders and carry them, so weary can hardly walk. Thank you sir for what you are doing for Australia
Bored Panda spoke with Ben Jameson, an Australian living on the Gold Coast, an hour south of Brisbane, about the fires, as well as about the anger that the country's citizens are feeling at the government due to the entire situation.
"There’s a whole lot of division when it comes to whose to blame. Politically. My housemate lost two extended family members in the fires in Wytaliba. Where they lost 80% of the houses in that community. But that’s not the only community to experience such loss," Ben told us. "People are pretty angry, man. Angry at the leadership, because there is none. We have a prime minister who is so disconnected, he goes to the site of where there has been such devastating loss, to do what?! Well the members of the community are there. But does he want to talk to them? No! He literally walks away from anyone that has something to say, anything."
"People are pleading, crying, desperately wanting to know what. Is going to do, where the help is, where is the support, where is the funding for the firefighters, where is the funding and support for the volunteer firefighters... So many of these firefighters are volunteers."
He continued: "You would think in a country such as ours, where we have had bushfires become a part of our identity almost, that we would have invested properly and have adequate equipment and sufficiently trained firefighters and enough of them. But no, instead against all advice from weather services about drought and rainfall conditions, and advice from fire services about the severity of predicted bushfire seasons, the government chose to cut funding to fire services, up to 39 million dollars. But who cares now. The people have been able to muster near that sum themselves. It’s almost as if we don’t need a government. The people are more than capable, and the people know."

3D “Visualisation” Of The Fires In Australia, Made From Nasa Satellite Data
To clarify, this represents all the bushfires over the last few months, some of these fires have since been put out, and this is not a true colour map. The aim of the picture is to show just how many fires Australia has dealt with in recent weeks. Think of it as pins marking places on a paper map, but using satellite technology.
Thanks for the clarification. It seems like it was all at one point in time.
Load More Replies...If you watch the news here in the UK you would think its just New South Wales but as you can clearly see its the WHOLE COUNTRY! Why did the world loose its s**t when Notre Dame caught fire but doesn't seem to care about a whole country?
It is terrifying, but I have to say it’s a time lapse photo. NASA has compiled the photo from the last few months. It’s not one day, but still horrific.
Not that this makes anything better, but for clarity this is not the current state of the fires. This is the total of what has burned already, and still is burning - meaning some of this is out now. Still terrifying to think it affects the entire continent.
That makes more sense. Thank you for the clarification
Load More Replies...Even if this shows the sum total of all that has burned rather than just the current blazes, it's still horrifying.
This picture alone puts it in perspective. Devastating doesn't begin to describe it.
I’m not sure about this photo. I know the fires have been in Queensland, NSW and Victoria plus south western W.A., blocking the highway between Eastern Australia and us in W.A. But I’ve not heard one word about fires in North Queensland, Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of W.A. Maybe Ive been daydreaming but as far as I can tell there’s not been any news of this to be occurring simultaneously with the current fires on the south east coast.
You're exactly right. It's not simultaneous. This picture is misleading because it's not just one picture.

"Our government is so disconnected. And so heavily invested in coal and anti-climate change. Because that’s where the Liberal Party funding comes from: pro-coal, and anti-climate change business. It does not serve the Liberal Party well to divest from coal, and to talk about climate change."
Ben said that it's "punishable to protest about the climate" and claims that he lives in a 'V for Vendetta' film. I mean why is it that it is now punishable to protest about the climate? It’s now illegal. How dystopian is this reality? I thought this was the future. But we can’t even talk about climate change. We are well in the grip of a changing climate and the consequences now are irreversible. We are well and truly [effed]. This that your seeing on the news now. This is now going to be the norm. Our bushfires in El Niño years are going to look like this."
"And don’t get me wrong. This won’t be every year. Sure we get bushfires. But there are a lot of serious global changes happening and lots of meteorological drivers. El Niño means we have such low rainfall at the moment. Drought conditions in so many towns lots of towns have run out of water. Cattle are dying, crops are dying. Sure, when La Niña years come around in their 4-ish year cycle we will experience more rain. But again, the severity of that rain will also be increased, our floods are going to get worse, our cyclones are going to get worse."
Ben continued: "We’re a big country so we experience a lot of extreme weather from north, south, east, and west. But there have been flames 80m tall, the wind just blows it and blows it and it’s just unstoppable. The heat from these fires extends so far that firefighters cannot get close enough to put water anywhere near the flame.... it is out of control. They can’t be controlled. You’ve probably gathered that even I’m pretty angry about it."

so scary! left half = most of australia's skies! right half = skies for the rest of the world! why is australia getting all the fires but nobody else?
Not true. There have been massive fires in the past year in California, Spain and Portugal, Greece, and the Amazon, where four countries were affected. Scientists were warning 10 years ago, that Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth, would be the worst affected by climate change. We are in the middle of a drought, which happens here about three years out of ten, but never has every state been ablaze at the same time. This is not normal.
Load More Replies...This is just so horrifying to think about— that it's actually happening and a lot of people don't even know about what the Australians have to deal with.
Firefighters Literally Dance In Joy As Rain Falls Over Raging Bush Fires That Have Burned Across Australia For Weeks
That’s all our Prime Minister has done and yet, the situation is worse than ever. Praying doesn’t work but real action does. We’re in devastating drought (part of the reason the fires are happening), so tree planting (huge reason the drought happened), desal plants, piping water inland, all actions that can be taken. Oh and that rain gave a reprieve, it didn’t stop any fires. The weather is predicted to return to hot and dry with strong winds.

Is this from this round? I read some place it was an old photo from 2012 or something? :)
My mum says it's raining in Sydney this morning. Not much, but it's something, and it lowers the temps as well.
Load More Replies...According to Ben, he feels embarrassed by the Australian government and thinks that its "a joke." "Make no mistake, they do not speak for the majority of the Australian people. At least the people that I know. My friends and family have shown so much support and strength and resilience. Coming together, donating money where possible, helping each other out, going to communities to help clean up. Like, just regular people. Not emergency services or defense force. Just normal people."
"There’s a number floating around that’s you guys have probably seen. A university in Sydney estimates that near 500 million animals have been killed by the fires since September. Half a billion. Half an [effing] billion. What the [eff]? Like so many of our animals, wombats, koalas, crocs, platypus, etc. are endangered or threatened species. I don’t think people, (especially, people in government) understand the scale of that number. I’m not sure if our country's ecosystem and biosphere will recover from this, I really don’t."

So Tired
After logging 776 hours of firefighting in the last ten weeks. No end in sight. New fires keep starting. Another four months of the fire season. Trucks literally being worked to death 24/7. Equipment breakages. Crew injuries. Fresh untrained crew needing guidance. Logistic nightmares. Missed meals. Etc.
I finally have 48 hours where I'm not permitted on a fireground. It's bliss. My body isn't coping with the comedown though. Headache, nausea, shakes.

"That fire was part of a larger group of fires up near the northern rivers of New South Wales (close to the Gold Coast where I am). Those fires are mostly under control now. But yeah, since that massive heat wave came through that broke all the temperature records at the end of last year it sparked fires further down south near the NSW/Victoria border, like even our Alpine region is on fire. Obviously no snow at the moment, but still. The country is just so dry at the moment. And like it has rained in places, but sporadically. It rained here last on Christmas Day. But it’s not raining where it needs it, especially further inland where it is just so so dry."
A Picture One Of The Local Postmen Took From His Front Yard. This Was In Forster
It looks like hell on earth. Horrible, horrible tragedy in Australia. I wish we could send rain. Will donate. Every little bit helps
Instead of the government stepping in with money we are having to rely on the global community and ordinary Australians. It is telling that literal strangers with no vested interest in our country are doing more for it than its own government. I have never been more proud of the Australian people and our friends abroad, nor more fed up with the wilful ignorance of our government.
This was a few blocks from my house. Amazingly no lives or property were lost in this blaze.

The Fires From Australia Are So Massive That We Our Skies In New Zealand Have Turned Yellow (1,600 Miles Away)
News alert today: the smoke of these fires have reached chile and argentina
Oh my god yes i remember this! I live in Auckland and i remember peeking out of my closed blinds, noticing the sky was yellow. Thought it was weird cause it was 2 pm when i saw this, and the sky looked kind of like how sunset light would look, so i asked my mum what was happening and she said it was cause of the bushfires. That was the first time i've heard of the bushfires too. It was crazy, i couldn't believe it after I found it all out. :(
I live in Perth, Western Australia and it sends shivers of horror down my spine.
How Big The Fires Are
Apparently there have been a lot of people arrested for starting many of the fires. Just what kind of mind wants to burn their country, their animals and their people? Terrifying!
The number is low. It has been exaggerated by vested interests to downplay the link between climate change and the massive scale of Australia's fires. Many of these fires have been started by lightning or accidently, and some have spread from one state to another. Bear in mind, our country is the same area as the United States, without Alaska, and that our fire season has months to run yet. Many fires are still burning. It is not over.

Time to take this seriously, no more excuses to ignore climate change. 😢😢
It all seems quite surreal to me as a West Australian. I am so devastated by it all.
They're a resilient lot!! They will get through this, but right now what they would need is a miracle!!!
Australia Is Currently Engulfed By Bushfires ... Almost 2000 Houses Have Been Burnt
Needless to say this is not the childhood memories you want your kids to have. I just can't imagine.
Australia Bush Fire
Symbolic. They’re fighting such a huge scale of devastation, with tools that are inferior to the sheer scale of fire that’s erupted. Heroes. God d*** heroes.
Lisa Contreras, they were saying over, possibly well over, 1000 degrees Celsius.

The smoke in the air is tinted red by the flames. The fires may not be headed in their direction.

Load More Replies...Visited Melbourne less than a year ago. Beautiful city. All of Australia is beautiful. So sorry this is happening. Praying for rain. 😥
no wind, & in a way that is good news, the wind causing the fires to change course or intensify
You walk around and your clothes will stink of the smoke too
Load More Replies...Good grief! It looks like Los Angeles or New York City on a bad smog day in 1975.
Mexico City, too. It sits in a 'bowl' surrounded by heights. Flying into any of these areas gives passengers heart attacks.
Load More Replies...Most people don't realize this, but almost every low-lying city in the *world* looks like this without fires! They call it smog--pollution. This drives home what we are doing to ourselves. Add the fires, and you wonder if even the cockroaches will survive.

Area Of Land Burnt In Australia And Area Of Smoke Coverage Shown As Equivalent Area Over Europe
In the UK we like to use Wales (my home) as a unit of measurement when comparing areas damaged by deforestation or fire. The dot representing the Australian fire damage is bigger than Wales. If the fires were burning here, my country would have been completely burned off the map. This is the sad fact: Australia's south eastern states are being burnt off the maps. And they have a long summer ahead.
Sian Edwards, the area burned is far bigger than the entire UK, and then a great deal more.
Load More Replies...If the smoke circle were a bit more to the left, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Great Britain and Ireland would be completely covered in Smoke. It's insane how big this is.
Sorry, I forgot Denmark, Monaco, Nederland and Luxemburg

So sad. I hope we all donate to help our fellow humans get back on their feet again. From all over the world
I hope people start to realise climate change is real and do more to reverse it.
Load More Replies...Oh, my. Their whole lives engulfed in flames. So sad for this country.
The destruction of each house is the destruction of years, maybe decades, of accumulated memories.
It's so sad. It just brings tears to my eyes to even contemplate the tragedy and the sheer misery. If there's anything good that comes out of this, it's the bravery and courage of a great nation and a great people!
Over A 1000 People Forced Onto A Beach By Out Of Control Fires. They Are Surrounded With No Escape Except To Swim
Sadly, this same scenario happened in Japan in 1923, but those trapped were consumed in a large fire tornado that killed 38,000 people in fifteen minutes :( . Glad the people pictured here received assistance and are safe.
What the heck! I never heard that. I am so sorry and send prayers for these beautiful ancestors!
Load More Replies...there were people who were stuck in the water for hours due to the fire till they were rescued
the Navy provided evacuation vessels to get these people off the beach.
how can these people be safe, how can they swim away, to where shall they swim, in waters that often have sharks and the land around them all is burning. So terribly sad.
There were approx 4000 people stranded on the beach but thankfully have been evacuated by boat.
Load More Replies...A bit of a ridiculous and insensitive caption on this one. “Except to swim” wasn’t necessary.
Without the Navy intervention, how ELSE were they going to escape? Airplanes? There's no place to land! Cars? They couldn't drive through that inferno, even if their cars weren't already burning. It's neither ridiculous nor insensitive; it's a pointed comment on their plight.
Load More Replies...Silly remark and not funny...This looks exactly what it is,a crowd of totally stunned people looking in disbelief at the devastation and ruin of their homes and everything they used to know. Each and every-one seem to be isolated from the person standing next to them, even the dogs to the left, this is heartbreaking.More than a 1000 people !!How long will they have to wait for water, food, shelter or for that matter, mobile bath rooms

Australia Is One Of The First Countries To Ring In 2020, Here Is What We Are Waking Up To On The Last Day Of This Decade. Happy New Year.
I’m sure it feels more like Happy F*****g New Year, there’s nothing to celebrate right now. This is bound to end, and hopefully soon (would’ve preferred yesterday, but keep hoping for tomorrow). Massive rainstorms have to start pouring to out this scale of fire out. It must happen. It must. Then you can celebrate.
Yet Fireworks celebrations still took place in some major cities despite the fact that many were pleading for it to be cancelled.

AH,the Australian downplaying of facts !! Josh Burkinshaw, you are a real man and a great friend...What you and your friends were facing was Hell on Earth, not a crazy day as when I trip over the dog, miss the bus, have my purse stolen or a nasty pimple on my face-day..I hope you succeeded and no-one was hurt.It is heartbreaking so see a place one loves go up in flames, but it can be rebuilt and tilled again, but the people have to be there in order for it to happen. So take care of yourself and be safe.God Bless!

This is just so tragic. I am thinking how are people not only trying to escape but get there Food, meds, medical treatment, jobs businesses , money, schools, gas for cars everything. I wish a national guard could help these people to stablize areas for them. I am sure some are doing the best they can however its the whole Australia looking at NASA pic.
And our PM had a George Bush moment when he went to Hawaii. No such thing as climate change??
A Hollywood disaster movie horribly come to life, but there is no happy ending here
I take a little comfort that zoos around the world have breeding populations of the endangered animals. If Australia can regrow the eucalyptus forests, they can be repopulated. It will take decades (at best) but it can be done. People can rebuild. Don't give up hope yet. We just need better leadership, and not just in Australia...

Hill Of "Lava"
i mean from a perspective it looks cool when you dont think but the next second you think of the damge and your like fuuuuuk
I do not mean to make anybody angry, but glorytherainwing did not mean to say it was cool because the fires are consuming everything. She meant it was cool because of the way it looked.I hope everyone will realize this also...
A scene like this is terrifying in anyone's language, we are all praying for rain and hoping our emergency and fire serve members are all safe.
It would be if the situation wasn't so dire. People are suffering and losing their homes, to which you only say "cooooool!!!" THAT is not cool.

must be hard to breath all that air. yet...where is everyone else?
We have 1000km of beach front affected, these people may have been in an isolated area.
Load More Replies...All or most comments here are about how so many people and animals suffered from the fire. But I could not see a thing, anywhere, about HOW they tried to stop the fires. Trying to stop fires at this level with.... hoses and firemen is absolutely ridiculous. Everywhere in this world, they stop fires using planes and helicopters that spread continuously substances that eventually stop fires. This is the single way to do a proper job, the single way. It is same with insects and mosquitos which in other countries in the world are not so danherous like here and they still use lots of planes, helucopters, to spray daily in some countries to protect people. Here you have to smell like insecticide continuously to be protected... as much as possible, because is very hard to be protected when they are so many, so big, so dangerous and so strong like here. But nobody cares ... It is toooo expensive... , so the whole world knows that in Australia we are bitten very badly by insects
Area Of Land Burnt In Australia Compared To The Size Of Ireland
I'm not sure why, but this one picture hit me like a ton of bricks. Many of the pictures have me in tears, but this one made me gasp and start to sob.
Sadly, this area is getting larger every day, and we still have many fires burning, and months of our fire season to go.
Load More Replies...NOOOOOOOOO DON'T BRING OUR GAEILGE WARRIORS INTO THIS!!! NOOOOOOO
This is outdated. The size of the current area engulfs the UK. Australia is being obliterated.
Ireland: the size of a designed Famine, 1847, where all food was shipped out to England at the harbors, with armed guards. Humankind - we can do better.
This isn't right....far more land has been burned than the entire size of Ireland.
Apocalyptic Image Of Sydney’s Bush Fires
My friend Nina Lipscomb took this photo. You should give her credit: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6FmzWbg-Br/?igshid=128bg6svpzvx8
I would not be there I have seen how fast a fire can move just by one little spark or ember to stand up there in those mountains is sheer folly or blatant stupidity.
I wish the media would stop concentrating on New South Wales. The fires are burning in every state and territory, some worse than others, and this is unprecedented. Our country is so large that we have many different weather patterns. This should not be happening, let alone on an unimaginable scale!
No Filter. A Motel In Nsw Australia In Middle Of The Day
Wow...I thought we had it bad here in Calif...that's just awful and not only feel bad for the people but the poor animals....awful.
These are great photos of a most tragic, possibly the greatest natural tragedy this century, especially for wildlife. Stand tall Australia.
I heard it got out of hand because they ended AU's controlled burning schedule which prevents devastation like this. This is what happens when people forget why maintenance programs are worth every penny. Their government made a VERY bad decision. US needs to rejoin the Paris Accord the first minute we get a new POTUS.
You can donate towards disaster relief and recovery efforts like the Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul Society, and the Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades Donations Fund to make a change and to help Australians affected by the bushfires.

Fires In Australia
It’s absolutely awful. Just breaks my heart all the devastation these fires have caused. I really wish we get some good rain soon, we really really need it. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in helping ie firefighters, volunteers, emergency services, vets, donors etc. My heart goes to the families that have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods etc. Please stay safe.
But nah...global warming has nothing to do with it. Can we take all the politicians and diplomats that still think global warming doesn't exist and put them on an island off the coast of Australia.. preferably in the path of all the smoke...
I disagree. Let's put them in the middle of Australia with a bottle of water between them.
Load More Replies...Our skies have turned grey from the fires ~250km away, it's hard to see anything in Melbourne city, and the air quality is absolutely horrible. Cheers to everyone's who's supporting us as well as the firefighters and other volunteers for working countless unpaid hours to fight these fires and having to be away from their families. Definitely wasn't a good way to end 2019/start 2020 our-air-5e...90bb2f.jpg
Good luck to you and your fellow Aussies. I'm praying to whatever higher power to bring buckets of rain and low winds your way. Stay safe!!
Load More Replies...If you are moved by this, then grapple with the fact that this is going to happen again. Possibly as early as next fire season - which starts at the end of THIS YEAR. Unless we get climate change under control, this is Australia's new normal. Tell your representatives, whatever country you live in, that you want action on climate change. And move to remove your support from climate denying companies, in particular the Murdoch press. From a CSIRO Report focusing on links between climate change and fire, 2009: "Climate change may affect fire regimes across the Australian landscape through changes to temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Modeled climate projections show that much of southern Australia may become warmer and drier. This modeling suggests that, by 2020, extreme fire danger days in south-eastern Australia may occur 5 to 65 per cent more often than at present."
The CSIRO scientists were right ten years ago. Our politicians ignored their findings, and the advice of our senior fire service personnel. All climate change deniers around the world, take note. The climate scientists were right, and you ignore them at your peril, and put the entire planet at risk. Phase out fossil fuels ASAP, and don't keep building more coal mines!
