Everyone’s winter is a little different. Some take out their skis and hit the mountains, while others put on their blades and take to icy lakes, build snowmen in the backyard, or watch their dogs pretend to be moles.
So we decided to check out what the season looks like this time around and collected a bunch of pictures shared from across the globe.
From peaceful landscapes to playful everyday moments caught in the cold, these images capture the many moods of winter—minus the frozen fingers.

Sometimes the weather can be confusing. You get a cold week at the beginning of December, followed by a warm one that melts any snow that has fallen.
But did you know that people can’t agree on when winter starts?
One group says it begins on December 1 and ends on the last day of February.
Meteorologists use fixed three-month periods for each season because it makes year-on-year comparisons easier.

Others, however, claim winter starts on December 21, a time known as the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. If you follow this line of thought, the season then runs until the vernal, or spring, equinox, which in 2026 falls on Friday, March 20.
The natural rotation of Earth around the sun forms the basis of the astronomical calendar, in which seasons are defined by two solstices and two equinoxes. Earth’s tilt and the sun’s alignment over the equator determine both the solstices and the equinoxes.

The astronomical calendar is how humans have organized their lives and civilizations for thousands of years. Long before the invention of the mechanical clock, our ancestors looked to the skies to understand their time and place on the planet.
By observing the sun’s changing path, people could predict when harsh weather was due to arrive, when it was a good time to hunt certain animals, which foods were in season, and so on.

He Hates Snow
My childhood cat hated snow with a passion. There was only one thing he hated even more: the litter box. Whenever there was snow on the ground, he refrained from going until it wasn't to be contained anymore, then mutated to a bunny doing 2m hops to the nearest safe tree (which means: with no snow under it, preferably the conifers at the edge of our backyard), did whatever needed doing as quickly as possible, and then jumped back with the same bunny hops. It was hilarious. :D
Because Earth travels around the sun in roughly 365.24 days, an extra day is needed every four years, creating what we call a leap year.
This also causes the exact dates of the solstices and equinoxes to vary from year to year. Additionally, the elliptical shape of Earth’s orbit around the sun means the lengths of the astronomical seasons can vary, lasting anywhere from about 89 to 93 days.
To make it easier to consistently compare climatological statistics for a particular season from one year to the next, meteorological seasons were born.

Ah, the white bottomed deer. There are three of them outside nearby. Often see them dashing away as I drive home in the evening. Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer.

I'm quite sure that if the orange shitgibbon is dumb enough to actually slap on tariffs, then the countries affected will (eventually) do the same. There's a simpler solution we can do today - just stop buying American stuff. Maybe, just maybe, it might sink in to the minds of *other* senators that tanking international trade is, well, kind of dumb?
I am torn because I don't want Europe to have economic pain, but the more expenses Trump inflicts on Americans the madder they will be when they go to the polls in November.

I'm jealous we didn't have any snow in the part of the UK I live, and I love snow.
I am a wheelchair user which means I'm stuck until the snow is well cleared. I live in Ottawa Canada so that means I'm anxiously watching the weather 4 months of the year

Load More Replies...Woke up to snow falling in central Georgia (US) this morning! Not a typical sight. Didn't stick, but it was pretty. I like snow in small doses. My dog, not so much.
