Travelers who use Airbnb hate its cleaning fees. You know, those annoying expenses attached to a property that supposedly cover the costs of tidying up the place for the next visitor.

In fact, they got so bad that in November, Airbnb said it was planning to make some big changes and make customer bills more transparent that should, in return, incentivize hosts to reduce or forgo them altogether.

To show you that this decision was long overdue, we at Bored Panda decided to compile some of the most absurd Airbnb cleaning fees people have noticed. Having said that, I guess it's better late than never, eh?

Continue scrolling to check them out and don't miss the conversation we had about the platform with travelers and authors of the blog Finding the Universe, Laurence and Jessica Norah; you'll find it spread in between the pictures.

That's literally the point of these threads. Air B&B owners are angry and scared because they are losing customers, but the reason they are losing customers is because rather than being a cheap and homey place for a traveller to stay (as they were originally intended to be), owners are jacking up the prices, PLUS adding a ton of requirements for guests before checkout, so guests are instead flocking to hotels which are now comparably-priced if not cheaper, and which come with cleaning services.

Agreed. And I don't know what "leaving oven/stove on" means in this context, because leaving those on unattended for an indefinite amount of time causes house fires. It seems like the penalty is for wasting electricity, but who just leaves the stove on when they're leaving a place?

Based on value for money, I think that I will purchase the "Fridge Left Open" at $25 (Bonus if it's a Fridge/Freezer as there's no extra charge, and I'm able to use the remainder of my condiments in creative ways prior to disposal) & seeing as it's a 2 for 1 deal I will also purchase the "Stove/Oven Left On" at $25 (if it is a gas stove, for obvious safety reasons, I will make sure to light all of the burners prior to leaving).

I live in Florida and work in tandem with the Vacation Home/Tourist industry. The people complaining about "airbnb" charges are the people who created this niche industry because hotels were too expensive. I work with the people who manage the properties and are responsible for the upkeep. 80% of vacation rental guests are pigs. Those ridiculous fees exist because many guests just trash these homes when they stay in them. I will be glad when the Airbnb fad dies. Go back to hotels. It's what they were made for! Not these housing developments with greedy HOAS!

I've dealt well vacation rental guests since I was 10, nearly 50 years and the vast majority are just fine. Maybe 5% come even close to trashing places. Stop lying. The ridiculous fees are just a money grab.

Only $450 for smoking? I would buy cartons of cigarettes, and buy a facebook ad for my area letting everyone know that they could come have as many free cigarettes as they want as long as they smoke them inside. I'll be dammed if I don't get my money's worth on a cleaning fee.

In NM, there are counties that are starting to tax AirBNB'ers as businesses instead of regular home property taxes. Sorry - probably many here will hate my, but I definitely understand the list and find it upsetting it has become necessary. I’m flat sharing and feel like I should setup that list as well. It’s horrifying how some people lack respect for other peoples property and lack decency. Of course additional energy costs arise when you don’t switch off the light and the fridge might be damaged when not closed. I used AirBB a lot and it goes without saying that I leave the place in same condition as I found it. What’s wrong with people behaving like animals when staying in an apartment?

I know of a couple who drove across country for a wedding with their dog. The Air Bnb said dogs were okay until they got here. Turned out the BnB had cameras installed inside and out and decided the dog was too big. They left their dog in their car, checking it periodically and weather was cool. They left right after wedding. This air BnB owner ruined this guest’s stay by changing the rules. Hotels don’t do that and they don’t spy on you,

I sold my home in Lake Tahoe as we became surrounded by AB&B's, and it became horrendous dealing with total pigs coming in for a few days and what they did to the neighborhood. I can kind of understand this list, however, because the vast majority of Air B&B renters were thoughtless aholes. Not to mention the window peepers, porn shoots, out of control wedding parties and thieves stealing yard ornaments, benches, and even our canoe. I don't think much of the owners OR most renters.

Just tell me you're tryna get rich off one stay without telling me! There was a place we stayed recently that was a good place until we saw what looked like hair wrapped all around the dish sponge (nasty), and one of the beds was gross like someone stayed in it and never took a bath. And to boot, their toilet almost fell off the axis because it wasn't tightened to the floor properly. All those things are a liability on the owners renting. I do not understand why they do this and not clean up properly after charging absorbent fees. Seems covid make crooks out of many folks because a lot of this wasn't as prevalent. Sad!

Airbnb cleaning fees are a one-time charge pocketed by hosts to cover things like doing laundry or scrubbing toilets between stays. They're separate from the base price and are in addition to service fees or charges for optional add-ons.

A NerdWallet analysis of 1,000 U.S. Airbnb reservations with check-in dates in 2022 or 2023 found that the median cleaning fee per listing for a one-night stay was $75.

The analysis also discovered that cleaning fees amounted to about 25% of the total price paid. In fact, in almost 40% of listings, they were from 20% to 29.9% of the actual price. On a few listings, cleaning fees were even higher than the nightly rate.

"We've generally had a positive experience with our stays. We have had a couple of negative experiences—one where the apartment had many issues like no heating or hot water, and one where the apartment no longer existed. In both cases Airbnb support was quite helpful," the couple recalled.

Also looking at you apartment owners that rent out apartments for airbnb. Airbnb has been a massive contributor to the global housing crisis causing expensive homes and way too high rents

When choosing a property, Laurence and Jessica said the most important thing is to read its latest reviews and to make sure people are getting the experience that is advertised.

"When we have had issues, they have nearly always been with properties with very few or no reviews, where it's hard to see exactly what you are getting," the couple explained.
