Travelers who use Airbnb hate its cleaning fees. You know, those annoying expenses attached to a property that supposedly cover the costs of tidying up the place for the next visitor.
In fact, they got so bad that in November, Airbnb said it was planning to make some big changes and make customer bills more transparent that should, in return, incentivize hosts to reduce or forgo them altogether.
To show you that this decision was long overdue, we at Bored Panda decided to compile some of the most absurd Airbnb cleaning fees people have noticed. Having said that, I guess it's better late than never, eh?
Continue scrolling to check them out and don't miss the conversation we had about the platform with travelers and authors of the blog Finding the Universe, Laurence and Jessica Norah; you'll find it spread in between the pictures.

Port Huron, MI, Outrageous Airbnb 67$/Night Listing Came Out To 261$. Can't Forget The 150$ Cleaning Fee That Will Be Conducted By The Guest
Addendum: Please add $1/per breath taken per person inside Airbnb
I do understand some of these, like smoking. But $25 for left on lights?
They charge for service calls...they charge them to fix their own property...🤦♀️
Lack of priorities is what bothers me. 250$ for bug infestation vs 1250$ for pets is way off.
Well...I must say...now, don't hate me for this, but maybe get a frickin hotel room.? Just saying.
If they are going to charge me $150 for ME to clean their house screw that...
Fees That Add $653 To A 2-Day $210 Per Night Airbnb
That's the reason why I now only use Hotels in USA. I loved airbnb a few years back in the USA but now it's almost double the price as a hotel.
I go diving a lot in Florida, so I always look for airbnb first. The cleaning fees are ridiculous. In West Palm Beach, I found a place with a $1000 cleaning fee. Most have fees that are double the nightly fee. Hotels definitely come out to be a better deal now. Especially ones that provide breakfast.
Load More Replies...Good grief. You could stay at a 5 star hotel with room service for that price. And you can leave without being charged a cleaning fee.
yes. this truly is a 'rare find'. it's not every day u get robbed so blatantly like this(!)
Cleaning fee is 416!$ smear s**t on the walls and get your monies worth. /joking but you get it. Df.
$416 cleaning fee for a two night stay is absolutely ridiculous. If the place gets trashed, then charge accordingly, but these hyperinflated fees are ridiculous. The guest could hire a professional cleaning service to come in and clean for cheaper than $416.
The cleaning fees are a way to hide the real cost that you want to charge. The unit is listed on the site by the nightly rate, no fees are included. I think they are in the process of or have changed this, but that's what causes this.
Load More Replies...That's one of my biggest issues. Many places it's really hard to buy or rent a house because they've been bought up by corporations or investors to be used as AirBnBs.
Load More Replies...Story time: My partner rented out her port st Lucie home as an airbnb while abroad. 'family of 4' rented it for a long weekend to visit relatives. nothing unusual with that though we preferred the longer rentals for less hassle for everyone. all paid up - can’t remember the numbers exactly but it was about $100 a night, cleaning was $150 because that's what the cleaner charges us who does all the laundry as well. $500 refundable damage deposit and tax (that you have no say over). So, after manager had left on the Friday, (we find out later from neighbours) 4 cars turn up with at least 12 (probably 16) people in - 3 big dogs (we had a fenced in yard) and a few children. they proceed to have a full-on house party over the weekend and run on the Monday before checkout (manager would usually walk-through house with guest).
EVERY room was ruined, soda over every floor, food and sauce rubbed up the walls, every bit of linen/towels used, they had a f******g barbecue IN the garage, sofa torn and stained, dog waste left everywhere, cigarette holes in one mattress (non-smoking house), one bed frame collapsed. Sink broken, TV broken PlayStation controller and game stolen. That is why Airbnb hosts charge so much, you can’t subsequently charge more because some a******e has trashed your place, reporting them does nothing to recoup your losses and the offender just opens a new account and repeats the process. It been ruined for everyone.
Load More Replies...Ok prices ridiculous. Hotel cheaper plus then you don't have to clean it.
Airbnb cleaning fees are a one-time charge pocketed by hosts to cover things like doing laundry or scrubbing toilets between stays. They're separate from the base price and are in addition to service fees or charges for optional add-ons.
A NerdWallet analysis of 1,000 U.S. Airbnb reservations with check-in dates in 2022 or 2023 found that the median cleaning fee per listing for a one-night stay was $75.
The analysis also discovered that cleaning fees amounted to about 25% of the total price paid. In fact, in almost 40% of listings, they were from 20% to 29.9% of the actual price. On a few listings, cleaning fees were even higher than the nightly rate.
$59 For One Night
Can we just clean it for 2 days by ourselves, and stay 2 days for free.
Im pretty sure you pay the fee and still clean it.
Load More Replies...This is a classic case of I'm worth more than what people will filter out on the cost per night filter, but they'll be so blown away they'll pay more for my bnb in the end.
given that they likely pay a cleaner minimum wage this is just price gauging
Are we talking US Airbnbs here? I yave stayed at Swedish and Czech airbnbs often, the one last week was a lovely apparment with free pantry and cookies, cleaning fee for 5 nights was 10 dollars, the place itself 39 dollars a night. Alawys had lovely and friendly hosts.
And that's all the host is going to pay you while they pocket the rest
Load More Replies...I can add to this: the cleaning fees are mostly out of the owner's control; their cleaning company charges this amount per visit. Each of the cleaners are individuals with their own (usually small) cleaning business. We are ALL in the wrong business!
Typical now. Even AIRBNB is tired of the people who are running AIRBNBs! I'm tired of hearing about their complaints on the websites and chats! Get out of the business if you don't think people can be clean enough!
Airbnb Owner Expects Us To Tip His Cleaning Service He Hired On Top Of The $250 Cleaning Fee
😂 😂 😂 Before I saw this comment, I actually showed the screen my middle finger... Great minds think alike! 😂
Load More Replies...I wonder how much of that cleaning fee actually went to the cleaners?
Namaste
And make sure that it's absolutely everywhere except for the bathtub
Load More Replies...If it is a beach house how in the world can you prevent sand from coming in??
I clean a condo at the beach and, OF COURSE, sand is going to be in the Unit! Owner should have considered this upon purchase.
However, that doesn't mean that the site is all bad. "We have used Airbnb many times over the years in destinations around the world," Laurence and Jessica Norah told Bored Panda, adding that one of the most recent apartments they rented was in Nairobi, Kenya, and they had it for four nights.
"We've generally had a positive experience with our stays. We have had a couple of negative experiences—one where the apartment had many issues like no heating or hot water, and one where the apartment no longer existed. In both cases Airbnb support was quite helpful," the couple recalled.
Not Cool Airbnb
Sod that I’d stay in a hotel where all that is inclusive and I’d leave a tip for the staff.
As a cleaner in a costal tourist town, I can attest to the hard work it is cleaning after up after guests. We have a freelance business and thus do not own any of the properties that we clean. I personally detest Airbnb as our town has lost so many permanent rental properties for locals who are integral to providing services required for tourists. Beyond that, the amount of complaints received for issues beyond our control (weather, bugs, structural/aesthetic condition of the property etc) is ridiculous and is generally aimed at us as opposed to the owners (who mostly live out of town). I can only speak from own experience, but Airbnb seems to benefit property owners only, with no regard for the people who are left to put in a hell of a lot of hard work (cleaners, property managers, gardeners etc) .
So they are saying you slept with a comforter they never wash between guests
Hotels don't make you do your own laundry and dishes. And hotels are usually in a better location.
My friends rented a suit in a hotel once where it had a kitchen. I was used to the Airbnb (before switching back to hotels) and I started doing the dishes. They were like wtf are you doing.. housekeeping takes care of that 😂 I had no idea
Load More Replies...I will wash that goddamn comforter I swear to God. Don't even test me, I'll do it.
This Is Why Nobody Wants To Use Airbnb Anymore… Price Nearly Doubled After All The Fees
Honestly, the best thing to happen for the housing market would be a complete collapse of Airbnb and all those investors that bought homes they don't use to use as Airbnb rentals. Also looking at you apartment owners that rent out apartments for airbnb. Airbnb has been a massive contributor to the global housing crisis causing expensive homes and way too high rents
My husband and I have been looking for a retirement home for over a year. There are simply no houses available. We haven't even had a property forwarded by our agent in over 4 months, it's dry out there, we still chat with her, she's fill looking snd so are we, there area just no properties for sale in our area right now. It's truly bizarre.
Load More Replies...What's the difference between cleaning fee and service fee? Cleaning is a service.
Me and my family run an airbnb and i would never make someone do this 👎
Occupancy taxes and fees are paid for by hotels and are (AIUI) required. Is there any guarantee that the AirB&B is going to pay the money it collects?
Or, stay in a 3-star hotel for 3 nights, for way less than 300.00 a night, and NO additional cleaning fees, and free buffet breakfast!
How Airbnb Allows You To Be Charged A Large Cleaning Fee Then Be Required To Clean Before You Check Out
One of these by themselves is fine, but together? What are you even paying the service fee for????????????????
Them letting you eat within the house
Load More Replies...For goodness sakes, Airbnb have shot themselves in the foot. Their greed has doomed them. It's now cheaper to stay at a nice hotel with no cleaning fees than it is to use Airbnb.
Wanna hear the worst part? I have a friend who cleans for airbnb in my city, and out of that $100-$150 cleaning fee she only gets $25-$40 of it. She cleans all of the floors, counters and surfaces, the toilet and sinks, dusts, vacuums, does the laundry and remakes the beds… and she only gets that much. Wth are they keeping the rest for!? The guests AND the cleaners are getting scr*wed!
Load More Replies...I am an airbnb superhost and I do not charge a cleaning fee. for Pete's sake. It is ridiculous to pay that much. What if the hotels did that?
What if you don’t use enough towels to make a full laundry load? Are you supposed to just raid the linen closet for clean towels to add to the load to make up the numbers?
I misunderstood "load the dishwasher and run." It means run the dishwasher. I thought it meant run away as soon as you start it 💀
Clean and load all used dishes into the dishwasher and run?? Why do you have to run? Is the dishwasher going to explode or something?
What the heck is occupancy taxes and fees? What is the service fee? Especially if the guests are doing all of the services? Who are they paying to clean? Deduct that from the cost of the night.
Okay but in the rental I clean all we ask is to strip the bed entirely and put the dishes in the dishwasher. It allows for us to just get a quick start by making the beds immediately, washing them is a bit extreme though.
Stripping bed linen is a normal request, especially since Covid. Leave the place as you found it is in my book the best guidance.
Lock after you when you leave, sure, but the rest is cleaning and/or service. Why do people have to both do and pay for it?
Sure Can't Wait For The Airbnb Bubble To Pop
It's like home delivery for take away food. Used to be cheap. Then they started adding minimim order, delivery fees, and service fees and charges. The total of the fees is almost the same as the food total
That actually happened to me the other day. My order price doubled after delivery and service fees. And before i hear "go get it yourself" some of us can't drive due to disability
Load More Replies...What's the service fee for. They don't do a damn thing. We just type everything in.
They'll wonder why they're stuck with a mone-losing investment, won't they? Same with take out food (with a nod to Pink kitty) which used to be affordable. Nowadays extra charges make it anything but convenient. These greedy people will also find nobody is willing to be overcharged. They'd better hope they don't charge themselves right into bankruptcy when we consumers leave them high and dry!
occupancy taxes & fees= charged by the state Service fee= charged by Airbnb Cleaning fee= pays the housekeeper, the hot tub maintenance, yard maintenance, trash removal, and in hotels this is just wrapped in to your overall rate, it has to be split out as personal homes since they're paying a separate company. $184/night for your own personal home seems reasonable. There would not be any comparable hotel suites availble at a similar rate. It would be less if they stayed more than one night.
When choosing a property, Laurence and Jessica said the most important thing is to read its latest reviews and to make sure people are getting the experience that is advertised.
"When we have had issues, they have nearly always been with properties with very few or no reviews, where it's hard to see exactly what you are getting," the couple explained.
My Airbnb Estimate - No Wonder Bookings Are Down
How in the WORLD do they justify a booking fee when THE BOOKING IS DONE THROUGH AN APP?!?
Booking fees, service fees... those are just F**K YOU fees.
Load More Replies...I’ve never used air BnB and I doubt I ever will. Charging for cleaning, when a hotel does it for free, is absolutely ridiculous.
Hotels are just more efficient. Inhouse housekeeping teams that service not just one but whole floors. Dirty room that needs more time to clean? No problem we have others available. No Cleaning fees as they are minimal and built into the cost of the room.
They f*****g charged an extra $101.40 for the privilege to make a goddam reservation.
Booking and resort fees? Do they have someone to give me a massage and a facial on site?
This Airbnb Would Have Only Cost Us $278 To Book For 2 Nights, But Has A $405 Cleaning Fee!
Most hotels/motels are cheaper per night
Load More Replies...Pure greed. Nothing less. This is what is killing Airbnb, and they'll deserve it.
I think Airbnb needs to show prices per night with the service and cleaning fees all together and not in the last step after you actually think you can afford that
This. Make them compete one the total price. This would be easy for Air BnB to implement and give a better idea of the price range. They won't do it because they count on people being in a hurry and booking without considering the extra fees. Except that "fool me once...". I used Air BnB once. Before all these fees became normal. Now I won't even consider it and I'll look for hotels. For me it stopped when they charged a cleaning fee AND asked me to do laundry.
Load More Replies...No freaking way!! Hotels/motels are cheaper. And they leave the light on for you!!
If reasonable looking two guys came to my house and said "we wanted to stay in AirBnB nearby, but they charge us additional 400 bucks cleaning fee, so we offer you 500 to stay at your house" they would have place to sleep and probably a free breakfast. This price is insane!
All Those Fees
I have a 3-bed family bach (holiday home) that I also AirBnb. My cleaner charges $130 to clean, deal with rubbish, drop/collect laundry to laundrette. Laundrette costs $50. So total cost $180. I charge the guests $120. As a frequent booker of AirBnb's, it's been very interesting being on the other side of the fence.
That's about twice as much as we paid for THREE nights in a motel, with breakfast, and someone else did the cleaning.
What is their justification in charging out-f*€king-rageous cleaning fees ($450) AND making you clean, do laundry, do dishes, et cetera, yourself? I mean someone would have to ‘plain it in great and graphic detail to this blond!
My Airbnb Host Wanted Me To Tip Housekeeping…on Top Of The $200 Cleaning Fee
I'd put a note in the envelope stating that the owner has their tip, and to ask them for it.
Load More Replies...Depends which country you are in I think. Some countries, the wages for cleaners are super low and entirely dependent on tips, such as Mexico
I spent more in tips to 7 workers on a cruise ship than the room. Management needs to pay decent salaries so there is no need to tip---as they do in Europe.
"I've heard you loud and clear—you feel like prices aren't transparent," Airbnb CEO Brain Chesky tweeted in November.
The updates come as Airbnb has seen travel demand rebound from its pandemic lows. But it is still confronting a more uncertain economic environment, including high inflation and recession fears, that could weigh on its customers' purchasing decisions.
"We started as an affordable alternative to hotels, and affordability is especially important today," Chesky wrote on Twitter. "During this difficult economic time, we need to help our Hosts provide great value to you."
In Our Airbnb In The Middle Of Nowhere
"Leave a tip on top of the fees we charged you, but don't be like that other tipper that we mock to other guests for not meeting our tipping standards! No need for us to thank you for your generosity as a closing to this note; shaming and bullying you into leaving more money in addition to what we already collected should do the trick. Come back again!"
My guess is the cleaning fee they charge you is way higher than what they pay people to actually go and do the cleaning. They likely get less than minimum wage, and need the tips! The host is raking in the fee bucks for sure
Load More Replies...I'd take that a step further and add: "YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY, SIR (MADAME)!"
Load More Replies...Instead how about a note; TIP - 20 dollars, minus 10 for dusty corners, minus ten for dirty windows, minus 10 service fee for this note. Venmo the 10 now or there will be a late charge of 20.
We stayed in a place that had hair all over the shower walls!
Load More Replies...Some people just wanna watch the world burn. These people are encouraging that behavior by driving people to madness with this type of BS
It appears to me as though the exorbitant "cleaning fees" are being retained by the hosts and not being paid to the people who are actually doing the cleaning.
However that should not be the customer's problem.
Load More Replies...The grammar issues concern me almost as much as the tip requirements.
It reads as English is not their first language to me. It's the begging that is unforgivable.
Load More Replies...A lot of people don't understand this. The host keeps the fees as a money grab. They pay the bare minimum to the cleaners and pocket the rest. They probably pay the cleaners half the cleaning fee.
Tipping is included in the cleaning fee. Maybe if there is a towel swan on the bed, and some lovely chocolate-mint on the pillow, and a bottle of nice bubbly wine in the fridge. Then we can tip.
This Misleading Airbnb Listing That Was Most Definitely Not $74/Night
Does this host even get guests with that kind of skewed invoice system? (I'm certainly not booking this one!)
Why not call the first cost "sleeping fee"? As it's clearly not 74 per night; you can't get out of the rest, right?
BWhat Air BnB gets is my truth; they resolve every issue with integrity, generosity and kindness; my experience when hosts are insanely rude, uninformed of the law or break Air BnB Policies, which foster BELONGING. I love Air BnB. I do not blame them for hosts' toxic behavior. Air BnB actually cares.
Just A Short List
Michigan time? I live in the part of Michigan that is in central time or do they mean the part of Michigan that is in eastern time? What in the seventh level of h*ll is Michigan time.........lol
I guess someone checked out late and said "Oh, my watch / phone / whatever was still on California time! My bad."
Load More Replies...The cottage would be nicer if: You didnt make me clean the place while charging me a cleaning fee at the same freaking time!
Maybe there wasn't a cleaning fee, or the fee was reasonable and meant for more in-depth cleaning like scrubbing toilets or something.
Load More Replies...Who wants to work that hard? Never been told to do any of that any hotel or motel I stayed at. Why do people put up with such nonsense?
I’m no expert, but should the towels and bath rugs be washed together? I find it unhygienic.
Sounds Fair
Unpopular opinion - but this is not what I would consider excessive. They're not asking you to scrub the shower, clean the oven, and do the laundry. Piling up the linens that I used, putting trash in a trash can, and starting the dishwasher sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Yeah... that's not even a fourth of the cleaning. It's just asking you to not be an a**h**e and pick up after yourself. You're a grown adult. The cleaning people aren't your slaves, servants.
Isn't the nightly rate the same thing as an occupancy fee? Or are you supposed to rent the place and not occupy it?
Occupancy tax* is a separate tax, required in some areas when you stay hotels, resorts, etc
Load More Replies...Service Fee is what AirBnB charges. The host doesn't get any of this.
Load More Replies...What I'm not understanding is how ANYONE in their right mind would pay these outrageous prices to stay in AIRBNB. Usually when you're on vacation you want to relax, have no worries! What I'm not going to do is clean their place AND pay a cleaning fee. No matter that you meticulously completed their list of check-out procedures; Their going to tack on "additional" cleaning fees!
What's that Travel Insurance Premium. They're just pulling items to charge for out or their assets.
We're not. Tell Air BnB. They have suspended 2 toxic hosts' accounts when I reported their abuses.
Still, sometimes you might just prefer a hotel. "It's a lot easier for shorter trips," Laurence and Jessica Norah said. "We normally use Airbnb for stays of 3 nights or more as otherwise, the hassle of coordinating check-in and check-out times can be tricky."
"In addition, a hotel is really useful for things like leaving luggage behind, and on-site amenities like a printer or restaurant. Often, a hotel can also be more reasonably priced as well."
I’m Paying $200 Cleaning Fee And Expected To Do Most Of The Cleaning!
This looks like it might be somewhere remote, hence the "bear box". Leaving dirty dishes can lead to animals like, well, bears, smashing into the house / cabin / whatever. Same with the BBQ. Even if it's just for a few hours.
True, but if it is to be done by client, reduce or remove the clean8ng fee.
Load More Replies...turning off the lights, do your own dishes, lock up the home...this would all be just being a good house guest...
If they are charging me a cleaning fee then they can do the cleaning...
How early do you have to get up to do all this, pack, load up and leave before 10am?
Load More Replies...Most of those items are not "cleaning" anything. Turning off lights, locking doors, turning off propane, closing windows, etc. There is too much missing information like how many bathrooms and bedrooms are in the house? How much square feet does someone have the clean & sanitize? If it is a large house, the cleaning fee would have to be more.
Load More Replies...I don't think most of these people complaining actually understand what a cleaning service does. They aren't there to pick up after you like you're some helpless little kid.
I understand turning off propane and closing all windows. And returning key where it belongs.
Maine, New Hampshire, parts of New York, northeastern Ohio, Northeastern Illinois... Anywhere in the north with a lake...
Load More Replies...27% Service Fee
Silly billy, if they did that how could they lure people in with "cheap" rates and surprise them with a half dozen other hidden fees that sometimes superceede the price of the AirBnB itself and thus actually make profit in the most predatory way possible! It would be far, FAR too transparent and convenient to make it all one cost, hehe!
Load More Replies...OK, so hotels biuild in service fee and cleaning fee in the price (quite often a very nice breakfast too). Lower chance of finding a shady camera hidden somewhere in the room. Guests are not bullied for doing the cleaning (often on a daily basis) and leaving XL tips. Hotels are not more expensive in comparsion to most airbnbs. WHY WOULD ANYONE STILL USE AIRBNB?
Has anyone actually asked the pointed question what the cleaning and service fee intail? And hold them to it within an inch of their ability?? I would, and I would take advantage of everything they say it include, because the proof of it would be in their answer, so they wouldn't be able to sue either. Either that or deny to pay it if they can't come up with a detailed list.
Service fees are determined and collected by airbnb. Qcqleaning fees are determined by abd paid to the owners. Airbnb normally charges guests 12% which i think is a reasonable commission. Because owners try to get around taxes and their own 3% fees by increasing the cleaning fees as opposed to rent, airbnb charges their commission on the two combined.in this case, the $250 cleaning fee is out of line.
Why?
The service fees going to AirBnB, the taxes goes to government (it’s the same fees charged at a hotel)
Insane
I want to know what the "service fee" is on all these. I'm done with AB&B anyway after spending four nights in Galveston, Texas (100+ degrees and only getting down to the mid 80s at night) where we were paying $150 a night for a unit smaller than a hotel room with a window unit that couldn't keep it any lower than 82 degrees at night. All this and claimed it was walking distance from the beach (yeah, if you're willing to walk 11 miles). Whole list of cleaning demands AND a steep cleaning fee. This is not the first time we've been cheated by
If you were on Galveston island proper that's impossible. It's only like 15 miles long and 5 miles wide.
Load More Replies...An occupancy tax and fees??? They're just making this up. Surely just staying in the apartment is the fee itself??
Well all I can say is I’m not the maroon that paid these ridiculous prices! Upon learning full prices I would’ve cancelled immediately! Regardless.
How About No
You know who else is infamous for this nonsense? Ticketmaster. You know what words have never been uttered in the same sentence? "Wow, I really love Ticketmaster." Especially after you spend 20 minutes navigating through the ticket buying process just for a fee that is often more expensive than the tickets you're trying to buy. AirBnB is just as annoying and shady.
Ticketmaster locally (pre-Internet...yes, they've been around that long!...) made a commercial for a popular entertainment that listed OUR phone number by mistake. They refused to pull and fix it (that cost *money*, you understand) so after a day of ringing phone and utter frustration, my housemate sold seats, pay at the door. I'm fairly sure she sold center front 7 times. Boy did that get fixed fast!
Load More Replies...Pearl Jam hated Ticketmaster. The 90s are long over and TM is still ripping people off
Not Cool
No the wild part is when they give you a list of cleaning chores to do before check out on top of that fee. Lol
I've stayed at hotels many time, but funnily enough, I have never paid a separate cleaning fee there, or service fee, and taxes are included in prices in my country (unless it's between two companies).
If I ever rent an airbnb, big if... I want a sparse place where they can't charge me cleaning fees. Sheets and pillow cases should cost no more than 5 bucks to clean
Charge Ya Momma
These reminders seem perfectly reasonable...turn off the lights, don't leave trash out in the open, what's wrong with that? Even the cleaning fee is not crazy. But the reason I'd never choose this place is because of their $205 service fee. $205 for what? To use an app? I'd choose a hotel instead.
Hotels don't make you take out the trash.... or start the dishwasher and laundry, turn off the hot water heater, shake out the rugs, walk the dog, febreeze (that you had to provide) in every room, including the back yard, etc.... That is what's wrong with that. Their service fee covers all of those things
Load More Replies...If I were being charged a cleaning fee, I would remove all my food left in the fridge and turn in the key! Screw them! They can't "make" you clean the unit prior to their "professional" cleaners coming in! If it appears that they would try to add charges to your cc if you don't, you should do what I do. I buy a prepaid credit card just for these reasons. I load it with what the charges show, prior to actually confirming my stay, and nothing more. If they attempt to charge this card with more hidden fees, AFTER, my stay, the jokes on them! I would never abuse a unit, but I'm also NOT cleaning it, doing laundry, and any other nonsense. I would take the trash out, but that's the extent of it. This crazy company's over-inflated, bubble needs to pop!! ;(
If you don't even take out your own trash at your own house, maybe you're the problem...
I agree, the reminders seem reasonable. I would do those things without being asked anyway.
You...you should definitely be taking out your own trash at your own house.
"I don't even take out my own trash at my house" ...... uhhh... I'm sorry YOUR momma didn't raise you to be a responsible adult? If you'd like, I'd be happy to teach you how to take the bag out of the can, tie up those long and crazy drawstrings, and carry it on the long hike to the bins OUTSIDE of the house. I know that sounds super hard and scary, but I promise it's not. Even a young child can manage it. You'll be okay, hun. We'll get through this difficult task together.
"I don't even take out my own trash at my house" isn't the flex u think it is, booboo
People are gross and messy and dont seem to mind living like this. The worst part about paying cleaning fees is that I’m a clean freak and my standards of clean are higher than the cleaning crew. I’ve had cleaning fees returned to me often because I go through and note all the things that weren’t cleaned properly.
What's this with "return all furniture to original place"? Do they say at booking "make sure to take a photo of the room as you enter, so you'll know where all furniture are to be returned to"? Most furniture will be moved anyway, right, during that floor cleaning that is included in the cleaning fee?
Will Never Use Airbnb Or Vrbo Again. These Fees Are Insane!
so I don't understand "Management" and 'Service Fee" on top of cleaning fee and you have to clean the place up first!
No thanks. I'll stay in a cheap motel, or maybe buy a tent and camp which will be cheaper. Or how about catch a flight to a different state and stay in a hotel for however long and fly back again because it's cheaper.
My First Airbnb Bill. I Booked This In February. The Website Says Nothing About Cleaning Or Service Fees Which Raises The Price 30%. Should Have Stayed In A Hotel
I've never seen Airbnb's website "say nothing" about the fees, to be fair. You're sucked in by the price when seeking a rental from the initial search page, but then you learn about all the extra costs right away and certainly before you are charged your deposit and later your final amount.
Hotels are famous for adding stuff, too. Not cleaning fees, but state and local taxes, misc. taxes etc. Can turn a $100 room into $150 pretty quickly. RV parks are getting outrageous too. Screw the customer seems to be the order of the day.
What? Of course the fees are shown. You just did a screencap and posted it here.
Maybe this is the reason we don't have that many AirBnB in my country; all charges must be shown at time of purchase. (Except if it's something clearly extra, like taking stuff from the mini-bar, or going on excursions, or using spa/sauna, etc.)
Nonsense. The website clearly shows the total charges including both of those before you commit. Not their fault you just glossed over all that.
Airbnb Is Refusing To Give Refund After Host Demands $250 Extra Before Arrival, Not Mentioned In Original Posting
This is what happens when people try to make renting properties on AirBnB into a profit making business. They end up charging more than hotels because they don't have the efficiencies of hotels. If you're just someone who owns a vacation home for yourself, then you're simply defraying the cost of it by renting it out when you're not using it. If you're buying up multiple properties and trying to make a profit, then you're going to end up having to charge more than a hotel to make a profit. You have to contract out cleaning and maintenance to people who now have to run all over town rather than having a staff in one building with a centralized laundry facility. That's why so many of these places are also trying to force people to do laundry. It takes time and they don't want to pay the cleaner long enough to do it. You can bet that cleaning fee isn't going entirely to their cleaners. I hope that collapses, because it has contributed to our unaffordable housing market.
Since we have a dog that barks at the slightest inkling that there's something outside, we have to stay in separated units. Due to the fact that most resorts/cabin groups have gone on ABNB or Vrbo, that's usually where we end up. We always look for the cheapest total price, not the nightly price. I search a LOT... and I book EARLY to make sure I get what I want (there are often early booking discounts too). I don't care what the fees are for... as long as it's the lowest overall price, I'll go for it. There was one where we had to do a lot, but it was SUPER cheap (compared to others in the area) and VERY nice all around. One of the best places we've stayed (not hard to please us). So we didn't mind doing a few things. Also, after finding the place on Vrbo, I checked out the place's website (it was a camping cabin place) and booking through their site even saved a few more dollars. I always look for that too now.
I rented my house out for 1 week through AirBnB and my bank account was compromised and my identity stolen. I still can’t use my SS. number when filing taxes. It was IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone at AirBnB to inform them. It was all circular menus like the one above. Never again.
Fees On Airbnb
What everybody here doesn’t understand is that originally AirBnb was for people to rent out rooms IN THEIR OWN HOMES for tourists/business travellers to stay in while visiting the area. So when the guest left the homeowner would clean their own house/unit because they lived there obvs. The problems here started when greedy property owners decided it was another way for them to acquire and hoard more investment properties by renting them out on AirBnb and using that money to pay off the mortgage and in doing so took properties out of the local rental market causing housing shortages in every major city (and most small tourist towns) across the world. It shouldn’t, but it still manages to surprise me just how greedy people can be given the opportunity.
Full disclosure. I'm a Host. I charge $40 cleaning fee, which is exactly how much I pay my Cleaner. As a Host, I can determine the nightly rate and cleaning charge. Airbnb determines the taxes and service charge. I tell my guests to NOT make the bed. We tear it down and wash anyway. I do want them to wash the dishes they use very well. They are often left barely washed, greasy, and we have to re-do them. Often times my cleaner shows up starts a load of laundry, goes home, and then comes back again. For that reason, I can see why some Hosts would ask for a laundry or dishwasher start. I'm not judging but understand why they may ask. I don't ask for much and generally have not been burned. But once I am taken advantage of, then a new rule. I allow pets. Guest showed up with 5 dogs. Now I charge extra for dogs because of that one Guest. A lot of Hosts are like me. One or two units and that's it. Helps pay for the mortgage.
As I said to another Panda who is a host - you are the kind of host that Airbnb started with: a decent person with a room or small house available who just wants to make a bit of extra money. The problem now is that greedy a$$holes have bought up homes, condos, & leased apartments in tourist areas & are charging all these extra fees AND requiring the guest to do a bunch of cleaning, just so they can make bank. You are definitely not the kind of host that everyone's angry about.
Load More Replies...At least this one only had a $30 service fee. Of course....the "cleaning fee' is MORE than the nightly fee.
Which completely makes sense, right? It doesn't cost much of anything to have someone simply sleep at your place. It costs money to hire someone to clean it after they leave. I don't get why so many people are too dense to understand that the cleaning fee is necessary. Cleaning is usually the biggest cost of hosting someone, especially for short stays. Electricity, water, supplies, and the fraction of the mortgage that has to be paid for the nights the guest stayed gets split into the nightly rate and then there is a completely separate cost to hire someone to put everything back in order between guests. The way it's set up is the most-fair way for everyone involved. All costs are shown before you book. If it doesn't make sense for you, book everywhere.
Load More Replies...So I get it now. Service fee is airbnb's fee. 30% of the room. Which to me is freaking high. Cleaning fee being out of the nightly fee cuts the service charge. So it's the owners doing you a 'favour' to reduce the service fee and taxes while getting a bigger cut. I'm still checking into a hotel instead.
It’s fun to parrot what the internet says without thinking! 1) these aren’t hotels, they are homes. 2) a quality cleaner charges at least $25/hour, usually two are needed to hit the reset window, and the cleaning fees pays them as well as the restocking of all your consumables. That money doesn’t go to the host 3) the taxes and fees charged by Airbnb don’t go to the host. Airbnb makes 15% on all bookings (12 from guest, 3 from host). That’s how they get paid. Taxes go directly to local governments and are the same as those charged at hotels 4) nothing about it is a “scam”, people saying stuff like that are stupid, stupid sheeple 5) don’t like it? Book a hotel. Oh right, people complain about them too. Get a job. Recreational outrage internet losers are boring.
Thank you. These articles and the comments that follow make me sad for the human race. Why be mad that you have options? These people want Airbnb to shut down because they don't like the cleaning fees? I always tell my guests that I'll waive the cleaning fee as long as they're cool with sleeping in someone else's dirty linens and using someone else's dirty towels and living in someone else's filth. It costs money to clean my 4 bedroom home and it's not cheap for me, so if you want to stay at my place, then that cost HAS to be passed on to you, otherwise what the heck am I doing? Nobody's going to chose to lose money for the honor of having you stay at their house.
Load More Replies...Wow
Shoot, after tax and service fee that's $500! They could stay at a 5 start hotel AND drink 2 bottles of water from the mini fridge.
Load More Replies...For that much money I would book an at least 4-star hotel with roomservice, spa area, pool and no extra cleaning fees. It would probably be cheaper
Airbnb Advertised As $20/Night - With Over $100 Of Additional Fees
Yes, a week, but not just one night. Why not just be upfront and state flat rate per night which includes cleaning, service fee, etc?
Load More Replies...The problem lies in the set up of Airbnb. Cleaning for one night costs the same as a cleaning after a week's stay. That said, if you're doing all the cleaning there shouldn't be a cleaning charge. And yes there are slobs that don't respect other people's property. They should be eliminated from renting.
These don't seem that unreasonable, I think. At least it's closer to what hotels charge.
I think they're definitely some of the lower fees on this list. But if i could only afford $20 or needed something really cheap I'd be pretty upset that the price went up 5X
Load More Replies...I don't disagree with you. However, there appears to be a large number of people who want to use AirBnB to just make as much money as possible.

Hmmmm
This Sign Is Posted All Over The Airbnb We're Staying At. Are They Serious With This S**t?
Kind of scary as you don't know what constitutes being "outside of the house" during a 12-hour period. There's a big difference between throwing a hot tub party at 2 a.m. and quietly walking to or from your own vehicle and getting reported to the owner by a voyeuristic neighbor. Either they and the host are in on this for financial gain, or the host has very hostile neighbors that do not appreciate them using their home as an Airbnb and they should not be hosting at all!
This is entirely why commercial businesses should not be in residentially zoned property. simple.

Just No
What’s the problem here? If the price is for 8 guests, what’s wrong with extra fee for extra guests? Nothing is hidden..
I think it's the excessive cleaning (rinsing and sorting each type of garbage etc) that the OP is mostly talking about. It's reasonable enough to expect a fee with a certain number of extra guests.

Feels Like False Advertising. Fees And Tax Are More Than The Room Rate. Airbnb
Airbnb/Booking Hosts.. Where Do You People Get Off On This?
Tourism fee? Wtf at that and the "occupancy fee" I've been seeing on every other post. Gee, if I book an Air BnB, I wonder if I'm going to want to use the damn thing?!
That’s not airbnb that’s the US. Maybe one day you’ll be smart enough to request all inclusive prices. Don’t blame airbnb when you’re not even able to add tax and service on a simple restaurant menu.
Some truth here, but a restaurant has never charged me a "tourist fee" nor has a hotel charged an additional "cleaning fee" on top of the room rate. How condescending to speculate this person is not "smart enough".
Load More Replies...Hmm
Those are reasonable (as long as they didn't also charge a massive cleaning fee); I've stayed in plenty of places that ask you to strip the bed, wash your own dishes (or load the dishwasher) and sometimes take out the trash. It's when they start asking you to do your own laundry that you should run!

In the EU the listed price legally has to be all inclusive, and it is on Airbnb. What you see is what you’ll pay, no hidden costs. The price breakdown might be crazy but here you’d see a 1141 price, leave it or take it.
Also, most AirBNB hosts requite guests clean before they leave while still charging a cleaning fee. This, in this US, is called double dipping and in most cases, is not legal

$75 If You're Not Out On Time
If you don't want to use towels washed on Quick Wash, Tina, it looks like you're going to be doing laundry at the beginning and end of your vacation.
How About No
Sure, no problem...that'll be $50 per machine started. Gratuity not included.
Hotel Is Less Than This
There is now no use for AirBnB, it killed itself. When you cost more than a 5star hotel, and as a guest, you are expected to provide services to the owner, the idea that you are a "cheap alternative" to hotels just becomes a sick joke.
Also, and hear me out Steve, someone could be actually living in that house.

I asked for it a few times she ignored me, and so I spent most of my first day there, waiting for her to get home from New York (where she told me she was at instead of on the island where she was renting a room to somebody )in a restaurant while my phone charged because she couldn’t be bothered to contact me before my trip. All I wanted to do was drop a couple bags off so I could go to the beach. She told me I should take them with me to the Beach. then when I got a message from her that night saying that they were ready for me to come over and could give me directions I informed them that I already found a place to stay. They still charged me the 2 nights I had booked and a CLEAING FEE for place Id never been!!! She wasted The better part of one out of two days that I was expected to be there. Thanks, Allie. Oh, also left me a bad review because she said I had Contacted her too many times trying to get the address before my trip , Didn’t see the necessity or want to give it to me before their 2 o’clock check in -not even considering that I had luggage it was 100° and she lives on the top of the hill -I think- I never did get the address
Whenever we used to stay at Bnbs, we would always leave a handwritten note in a relatively clean room (at most, a piece of trash in the can) to express our thanks. Now we're afraid it'll be considered litter and charged to our account.
This why people should go back to real B&Bs. The room rate is what they say it is + tax and you get an awesome breakfast. Most cost less than local hotels
I really don't understand how people have the audacity to ask for a cleaning fee, a massive one at that, AND demand that you clean AND it's on top of a pricy nightly charge. Hotels are better, when people choose to stay at an Airbnb they're doing that person a favour. Helping them make a little extra cash. Yet they act like it's a privilege to stay at their badly decorated, tiny 1 bed apartment. Makes me so mad.
Fair and clear pricing should be automatic - there is such a thing as the cost of doing business - ie cleaning your home for your guests, and assuming all taxes. Added to that, the hosts can remove bad ratings, so you never really get the truth about these places. AirBnB is self-destructing and thank goodness for that. Bring back true bed and breakfasts.
Your statement about removing negative ratings is patently false.
Load More Replies...That’s really a US thing because prices are displayed without any tax, service or whatever additional fee and you end up paying 3x the advertised price. No such thing in the EU or in Asia. Then it’s just a matter of price breakdown and it’s not different from a hotel. When you’re paying your hotel room bill, 10-20% goes to tax, 10-20% goes to the booking platform, 30-40% goes to labor costs for cleaning/maintaining the room and the remaining for the hotel. If your bill is 200 the actual price of the room itself is roughly 75. Somehow not knowing this makes it more acceptable.
