Accurate data from US shelters and rescue groups is difficult to obtain because they do not have a central reporting system. Plus, most states don't require sharing the numbers at all. But according to some estimates, there can be as many as 6.5 million dogs and cats entering shelters every year. That's a lot. However, keep in mind that this figure is down from 20+ million in 1973.

With the public's support, animal welfare organizations have done a great deal for critters all around the country. So as a thank you to everyone involved, we at Bored Panda continue our series, sharing wholesome pictures of adopted pets who got another chance at life.

Continue scrolling to check out this month's selection, and if you need to catch up, here are the ones we released in July, June, and May.

Below, you will also find the conversation I had with Sarah Bhimani of Animal Humane Society (AHS), which provides direct care and services to help nearly 100,000 animals in need across Minnesota.

Wonderful that this beauty got rescued! There is no reason to slaughter horses; we have enough meat as it is. (Disclaimer: Not criticizing meat eaters; though I choose not to eat it, it is the meat/slaughter industry that has the most to answer for, not individuals.)

I basically make about $6,000-$8,000 a month online. It’s enough to comfortably replace my old jobs income, especially considering I only work about 10-13 hours a week from home. I was amazed how easy it was after I tried it….. ===))> 𝐖𝐰𝐰.𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.𝐂𝐨𝐦

When an animal enters a shelter, it has to get used to this (hopefully) temporary stop. The transition can be difficult. Sarah Bhimani, the Internal Communications and Content Producer at AHS, told Bored Panda that an animal's response to the shelter environment is very individual and varies.

"One challenge we see is that for some animals, the shelter can be an overwhelming place – lots of new smells and sounds, other animals, new people, etc," she explained. "We have different strategies to help these animals be comfortable, including housing them in offices (which tend to be quieter and away from other animals), extra enrichment (toys, treats, time with staff and volunteers), and occasionally prescribing anti-anxiety medication."

It's so awful when multiple returners are there in the shelter. My boy was returned twice - he's a bit feisty but I love him to bits. The neighbourhood kids give him a fairly wide berth, but that's just sensible of them hehehe

Don't ever believe this "They will have troubles adepting" shyte that shelters tell you. Animals know when they found their home and they have no problems taking over your chair, your bed and your spouse.

I think this is such a good idea as they entertain each other while you can't be home. We always got our cats in mutiples of twos. The local shelter was thrilled. (They also were joking "It's buy one, get 4 free day!" but were happy we were taking two. :)

Bhimani said that having so many animals come through AHS facilities also means that "some dogs or cats may catch a respiratory infection (similar to the common cold in humans) while in the shelter (commonly referred to as kennel cough in dogs and upper respiratory infection, or URI, in cats)."

The good thing is that the Animal Humane Society has effective protocols in place to treat animals who develop a respiratory infection and to prevent other animals from catching it.

I love it when people adopt older (or relatively older) cats and dogs. So many people want puppies and kittens, and older pets sometimes get put down simply because they haven't been adopted and a shelter needs the space. It is great to adopt from no-kill shelters too, but please keep older pets in "kill shelters" in mind.

When you adopt a pet, the amount of time and energy it will take for the animal to settle in can also vary. But Bhimani provided some general tips that can help both of you:

    • Before you bring your pet home (or before you leave the shelter), be sure to have all the necessary supplies you’ll need, including litter and litterbox, food and food/water bowls, collar and leash, toys, etc. Many of these supplies may be available for purchase from the shelter.

    • Designate a room in your home as a “sanctuary space” for your new pet. While it’s tempting to want to give your pet the run of the house right away, it can be overwhelming for your pet. This is especially important if you have already other pets in the home or young children. This room should be set up with your pet’s food, water, bed, toys, litterbox, etc. Let your pet stay in this room for about a week to acclimate to their new surroundings and get used to you and the family. Always supervise interactions between pets and children and teach children how to properly interact with your new pet.
    • If after a week your pet seems comfortable, you can let them explore other areas of your home. For dogs, it’s helpful to keep a leash on them while introducing them to the rest of the house so you can easily redirect them if they try jumping on or playing with something they shouldn’t.

As you can see from the pictures, dogs and cats aren't the only ones that need help.

"It depends on the shelter, but here at Animal Humane Society, for example, we also care for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, gerbils, mice, rats, small birds, chinchillas, degus, and hedgehogs," Bhimani added.

Found A Pregnant Momma Outside In The 100°f+ Texas Heat On Saturday

Needless to say this sweet momma found a new home for the next few months while she gives birth and I raise the little ones up for adoption. Neighbors thankfully have been helping too and have connections for the lil ones.

The sign on the cage states "I'm nervous", that might explain the claw. Personally I don't see how any animal wouldn't be in such a sary environment.

If you don't adopt this one, someone else will (big chances as she's cute and puppy). Be prepared or be first. I fostered dogs and cats, loved all of them to the fullest but knew my limitations. When the right one came I adopted him same day I saw him for the first time (one on the picture, I wasn't informed he arrived to the shelter before I went there to help), knowing noone could give him better home and care.

Last Weekend My Girlfriend Witnessed A Drink Driver Roll Their Car. The Puppy Was Ejected From The Vehicle, She Saved Him. Yesterday, I Adopted Him

The dog was not chipped, or collared. When animal services received the puppy from law enforcement they gave the owner a week to claim and prove ownership. The owner called highway patrol was given all the info they would need. But they never followed through with connecting with animal services at all. Thus surrendering the puppy to the system. I visited him almost daily until I could adopt him.

That's my cat's name, too! I got him from the pound about 2 years ago. He had been picked up by Minneapolis Animal Control. They had named him Bagheera and I decided to keep the name. He was about 1.5 yo. He was clearly not feral, but he was skittish. Not neutered or chipped. He's half-Siamese, so he's very vocal and loud. My best guess is that all of those factors led to him being abandoned. Two years later, he's a very happy cat who is a little timid with strangers but warms up fairly quickly. He also has a best buddy who is a year younger than him and they go tearing through the house chasing each other and they watch birdies together. His buddy also happens to be all black, but is simply a "mutt" and doesn't have Siamese in him. Interesting piece of trivia. First generation Siamese crosses are usually black. If you cross two of them together, there's a 25% chance you'll get back a full blooded Siamese. Mendelian genetics. Won't happen in my case. Bagheera shoots blanks. 🤣

I adopted a feral cat 8 years ago. She'll let me rub her from arm's length and she's laid in my lap once, the night after I had surgery for a cochlear implant. I'm thinking in a few more years she'll give my lap another try.

If it’s dirty laundry, she’s getting used to your smell. If it’s clean and fresh out of the dryer, it’s the warmth. Either way, you’re making her comfortable, and soon she’ll feel safe and secure. Then she’ll cuddle up.

No. They do not "need" another cat. This wrong belief very effectively prevents too many cats finding a home, when adopters just cannot take two. Result: zero cats got adopted.

Golden Retrievers remain "puppies" for approximately 3 years. They are so loving and playful and great family dogs. If you have children, this dog will be their best friend. As far as training goes, consistently is what you need. A short leash to begin with bringing lots of training treats. Train him well and you won't regret your adoption:D

Just be precise, practice everytime and be strict about what you want from him (but also clear and short). Do not skip practice on walk because you're tired, you also start tight and later on can loosen rules when he understands it. When he pulls, stop even if it's ever 2 meters, let him come by your side, let him understand that walk continues unless he's not pulling. Reward good behavior and let him calm down from excitement before you go on next step. And yes check with your veterinarian just from my experience special leaders don't work, if it works you don't need it, people tent to end with spike collars and I hate it because it never stops. It will be a lot of work, but you'll get there. And you do need activity for him which challenges his brain and body to loose some energy. Besides these dogs love to work. Give him one, you'll be surprised.

Head halter or a no pull harness will help with the pulling. Distractions are just part of being young. He'll get it eventually.

Join her on the floor for varying periods - sitting, laying down, etc. Just give her reassurance that you'll still be there whenever she's "done".

Spread a blanket on the floor, and lie down on it with her. Give her lots of petting and play with her lying down, then sitting or kneeling. Consider working with a trainer, as you may be doing something that confuses or scares her.

First advice. Huskies aren't always the best "first dog" so I applaud you and the fiance for this step in testing your relationship. All jokes aside. Huskies can have pretty severe separation anxiety. Before making any rash decision, give her a few days to adapt to her new surroundings. And read and listen to the great advice others are posting. Good luck. If all else fails, get her a friend. These are pack animals and additional pack members will help with anxiety.

Practice trust. Do things she's scared of and turn then to game and show her she's safe with you in controlled environments. Swimming is good exercise but also walking around fenced garden with dog guarding it (did that with then 14 yo dog from my bf). She's scared of umbrella opening? Take one with you for play game, first closed, place toys and snacks on it, lay on it, show her that there's nothing to be afraid of and just keep on playing, don't focus on things that scare her, focus on you and her. Recognize first signs and learn which toy is the best to change her focus. Take her to store if possible at her own pace but don't let her run away if she gets scared. Wait with her till she calms down and then make step forward. Laying in bed gives nothing other than cuddles, real deal breaker are things you do together, work, exercise, challenges, agility. And look her her in the eyes when she's looking in yours, she's trying to communicate, smile and say something soft and sweet.

The nickname people gave the School Admin Assistant in Midsomer Murders. Original Name Rosie Parker. But because she was the town gossip, everyone called her Nosey Parker.
