Thank you, Captain Obvious!
There are plenty of obvious things that people love to discuss, like how the weather currently is and how soon the holidays are. It’s totally fine to bring up topics like this in a self-aware way: “I know this is obvious, but I just really need to make small talk.” But sometimes, people think they’re being philosophical when they’re really just stating the obvious.
Below, we’ve gathered some of our favorite posts from the That’s How Things Work subreddit, which is dedicated to highlighting people who tried to be deep but failed miserably. From explaining concepts that already have a name to sharing “shower thoughts” that they probably should have kept to themselves, this list is full of funny, facepalm-worthy moments that might make you lose a bit of faith in humanity.
Be sure to upvote the posts that you get a kick out of, and then let us know in the comments: what’s the most obvious thing you’ve ever had explained to you before? Then, if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article featuring obvious things people learned embarrassingly late in life, you can find that right here!

Thanks I Hate Names
Actually, I think we should change the question to, "hello, what sound can I make at you to get your attention?
I don't know whether to upvote this or not. I like it but it kind of doesn't belong here.
So instead of asking strangers "hi what's your name?" I should instead start asking "hi, what noise must I make to get your attention?"
I agree. A proper well placed "Ahhhhh!" should perk everyone's ears up.
Load More Replies...Are You Twins In Real Life?
This is like when folks run into someone with a girl and boy twin and ask if they are identical.
Do Identical Male Twins Have the Same Penis Size? The answer is more or less, yes. Incase you were wondering.
Someone once asked me and my identical twin sister if we had always been twins, only since birth 😂
They could've been brothers or cousins - I've seen some that look scarily alike!
No, we just mysteriously came out of the same womb by mistake.
Not everything needs an explanation. When we’re children, we’ll need to have some things spelled out for us because we’re learning everything from scratch, but as adults, we should be able to assume many things are common sense. Unfortunately, common sense isn’t always super common. No one knows that better than the members of the That’s How Things Work subreddit. This group, which currently has nearly 85k members, is dedicated to featuring all of those #deep posts that might make you question humanity’s sanity. Common themes on the subreddit are “Shower Thought”, "Article", and "Deep", but I have to say, Article is the most concerning to me.
Even our news sources are sometimes reporting blatantly obvious headlines, but maybe that should be obvious to me… This list makes it clear that the entire internet is full of painfully obvious statements. Social media, news sites, dating apps, and Wikipedia, we’re all capable of being Captain Obvious. But according to Portland Therapy Center, there might actually be a reason why we tend to say things that can go without saying.

This is the same kind of person who hated Obamacare but loved the ACA.
Same happened with fish in Spain. Fishing small infant fish was forbidden so small fish were thrown back in to the see. This caused the species to shrink.
i' m not too sure 'bout this one. it's not the same. evolution will not prevent them from growing in the sea - over fishing will remove the adults to where there seems to be only small ones but they would grow if not fished out. whereas the taking of large tusk elephants would not allow large tusk elephants to reproduce. - that's just what i think.
Load More Replies...Don't downvote this sarcasm, I have not eloquently worded this, but I do believe this.
Load More Replies...Some seem to think evolution happens on purpose instead of being the result of natural selection
I (a 15yo kid dont come at me here) am Catholic and connect with my faith a lot actually. I believe that animals can adapt and evolve. Since the Old Testament of the Bible is mostly figurative stories, the creation story could easily be metaphorical. Not all religious people share the same beliefs and all that stuff. I'm also part of LGBTQ+ and still believe/love God. It's weird but I exist
This is a horrible picture to put with this; a dead adult elefant and a baby trying to wake their elder up. Very sad! 😢🐘
“It’s so hot outside!” Of course it is, we can all feel it. So why do we feel the need to say things like this? Portland Therapy Center notes on their site that the main reason we want to state the obvious is to feel connected to others. “Language is our way of sharing understanding. In the distant past, all we had to communicate was the sound of our voices and smoke signals, and those important signals warned of war parties and resources,” Dr. Gregory Devore writes. “In today’s hyper-connected world, we now augment our reality by using email, text, phone, and social media apps to share information about just about anything.”
Stating the obvious also makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. “When ideas are shared, creativity and action can occur,” Dr. Devore explains. “Those who are better communicators are more likely to receive support from others.” And if we don’t have support, we put ourselves at risk. So it’s perfectly natural to want to share our experiences with other humans, even if that means stating something super obvious. It’s snowing out, and you know that because you’re experiencing it too, but here’s a reminder that we’re all in this together.

HA. My dad said that to me when talking about reproductive rights!! I was like, "well yea, that's what opinions are!"
I believe my opinions are and shall remain un-inhindered by any personal bias I think.
And, it's a bias I'll accept until there's an attempt to pass it off as fact.
Nameless Famous Person, paraphrased: I sat down with myself and told me things, therefore I know a lot! Me: Yeah, you know how to put your left foot in your right mouth.
Dr. Devore also notes that when we bring attention to how we’re feeling, we might work together with others to help remedy the situation. Personally, I tend to ignore something if I think I’m the only person feeling bothered. If I am freezing in my office and having trouble typing because my hands are numb, I’m not likely to bring it up. But if someone else does, I’ll suggest that we turn on the heater we have available and confirm that I feel cold as well. When you and a friend both agree that it’s hot outside, you might decide to go grab an iced coffee or stop in a café for a drink and to cool off in the air conditioning. Rather than responding with a sarcastic and dismissive response when someone states the obvious, use that as an opportunity to validate their thoughts and find a connection.

Yes, That’s How Genetics Work
Not only the obvious of being related in the fictional story but also the Disney "gene pool" is limited due to making their characters fit other formulaic criteria. Like oversized eyes and small noses and such to make them "cute and lovable" or whatever. If you are going to look like Ursula in the Little Mermaid you are going to be a bad person. If you are the 'good' star you have large eyes / small nose like Ariel. Occasional exceptions but for the most part they are all going to look like they might be related.
Take Elsa, Rapunzel and Ariel instead, also look similar but have nothing to do with one another.

Load More Replies...Okay, but, there was this weird interview where the Frozen creators talked about having difficulty creating two main female characters who looked different. It isn't that people have an issue with sisters looking alike. It is that almost all Disney main female characters have the same body proportions because they don't seem to think they can or should animate female characters who aren't stick thin, hourglass figures with noticeable chest.
I kinda agree with this? The sisters looking alike is fine, but they could have tried harder on the mother. They all even have the same hairstyle.
Now...I do have to say though, if you watch Alaadin, the cartoon, most of the females do somehow resemble Jasmine. Some are different, but a lot are very similar.
I do think I actually watched something about the amount of copy and paste Disney uses, or Pixar, rather. They have a few base models and then change a couple things, but the models are all essentially the same. Obviously it works in this example. I wish I could remember what it was that I watched.
Beat up on Disney or Pixar or DreamWorks all you wish, but do you think each & every cellophane panel of Bugs Bunny at Warner Bros. was original? There seems to be a lot of unnecessary anger directed at "digital cloning" to save time -- why? Did "you" lose an animation gig because of this art-cloning technique? 🤷🏻♂️
Many of the posts on this list are people who were attempting to be deep or philosophical on social media, but they ended up just stating the most obvious things. In 2019, Laura Brown published an article on Forbes discussing this exact topic titled “Trying To Sound Smart Could Be Making You Look Dumb”. She notes that for some reason, many people have the idea that if you write clearly and directly, you don’t sound as intelligent as if you use an unnecessary amount of words, particularly buzz words. But the first issue that Laura takes with that kind of writing is that not everyone will understand it. “It’s possible to get your head so deeply into jargon and convoluted language that you’re actually quite hard to understand,” she writes. Just because you’ve managed to confuse people doesn’t mean you sound intelligent.

Load More Replies...Another issue with the kind of “eloquent business writing” that many companies try to use is that it can simply make you look bad. In fact, there’s even research to support this conclusion. Carnegie Mellon psychologist Daniel Oppenheimer wrote a paper titled “Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity: Problems with Using Long Words Needlessly” (now that’s a mouthful!), and he found that readers actually consider unnecessarily long words as less intelligent than simpler vocabulary. “It’s important to point out that this research is not about problems with using long words but about using long words needlessly,” he noted. “One thing seems certain: write as simply and plainly as possible and it’s more likely you’ll be thought of as intelligent.”

This story was so horrendous. Luckily his cubs and pride are thriving from reports I have seen and there wasn't additional tragedy.
Cecil does have quite a few offspring, sons/daughters and grandcubs but his son Xanda was illegally killed two years after his father was lured off of protected land, wounded with a crossbow, tracked for 40 hours and then fatally shot. Let's hope his extended family will fair better.

I know its data but i feel like its kinda wrong. Mine has a song I listened to like 5 times as my top song while another song I listened tio100s of times didnt make the list.
Mine was wrong this year, definitely. My top artist was correct, my second, fourth and fifth were iffy, but at least I do regularly listen to a song or two of theirs, then my third top artist is someone I played a playlist of about 8 months ago for an hour, and have never played them before or since, none of their songs were in my top 100,. And I have bands whose albums I listen to 2,3 times a week in full who aren’t on the top 5 list at all,. I would have thought album play would count more than single play for top artists? But then the top 100 is accurate though, so it’s either a very, very bad algorithm thats looking at the wrong things / behaviours when interpreting the data, or just plain wrong.
Load More Replies...Well, wait until you get an artist you played once three months ago in your top artists)
Mmmm, even on basic spotify? Since your playlist are on shuffle, you don't get to choose your top song. Whatever plays the most plays the most.
Right? I was surprised that they even had a most played for me. Like, I don’t choose…
Load More Replies...Not necessarily - mine isn't very accurate because I usually use Apple Music. I only use Spotify to look up artists that aren't on Apple
Just like trying far too hard to write in an “intelligent” way, trying way too hard to sound “deep” can certainly backfire. Pointing out the weather is a socially acceptable way of discussing what goes without saying, but when it comes to trying to explain obvious things to sound intelligent, you’re certain to get called out. But if we really want to channel someone who’s been featured on the That’s How Things Work subreddit, we could dive down the rabbit hole of, “Well, what’s obvious to one person may not be obvious to everyone else.” For example, when there are crumbs, dirt or anything else on the floor in my apartment, it makes my skin crawl. It is glaringly obvious to me, and I cannot rest until it’s been swept or vacuumed up. My former roommates, however, did not feel the same way and thought that I was crazy for seeing these crumbs with my “hawk eyes”.

Have you ever heard someone note that their therapist told them something that they would have never figured out on their own, but once they heard it, it seemed entirely obvious? We can’t always see the “obvious” things that are right in front of our eyes, due to our own biases or based on the life experiences we’ve had. If you’re a doctor, a patient might come in extremely confused about what’s wrong with them, but once they explain their symptoms, it might be obvious to you what’s wrong with them. Yes, the photos on this list are not great examples of when we should give someone the benefit of the doubt, because those things are definitely obvious. But just some food for thought: what’s blatantly obvious to you might blow someone else’s mind.

Father held prestigious positions throughout his life and was an early supporter of Seattle tech companies before junior created Microsoft. My relative told me stories from when they knew the family at a private club for rich people. They were a nice family, no bad stories, but the point is that they were living quite comfortably and had wealthy friends. Bill Gates jr was definitely not scrabbling from nothing. Yes, there's this 'weird trick' to discover how many years old it was. You take the year in which it was planted and subtract it from the year today (or the year it was felled) and the number you are left with is the age of the tree!! Who knew!

That's Pretty Much It Yeah
I think in this persons mind it made sense, but then they said it out loud, and it just sounds batshit crazy.
I would swear that’s smoked salmon but if it’s vegan, I’m obviously wrong.
Is it wrong that’s kind of get what they’re saying? I think they’re really badly trying to say they often recreate the look (taste and mouth feel) of meat products with usually full of c**p and unhealthy fake meat, rather than must moving on from it entirely. I think that’s it anyway.
Vegans go the path they take because they don't want to harm any animals, that doesn't mean they don't like the taste. When there is an opportunity to recreate their favorite foods that doesn't harm an animal in the making, why wouldn't they take advantage of that? It's just an alternative. I see nothing wrong with it. Also I doubt some vegan meat alternatives are meant to be healthy in the first place. When you're replicating something like pizza or burgers, I doubt the goal is meant for it to be healthy lmao. Although to be fair, a sushi burger is kinda odd, but not the weirdest i've seen.

Also, there are literally people out there that think a nuclear war is what we should be gunning for. They write articles about how nuking Russia is the right thing to do even if it leads to nuclear war. So making an article like this isn't all that crazy...
Load More Replies...Um, it says nuclear explosion but below it references Chernobyl which was a steam explosion with radioactive particles in it... Power plants can't cause nuclear explosions it's not physically possible. Nuclear explosions are actually really hard to achieve. Thus the reason more states don't have nukes.
Nuclear explosions are actually not hard at all to achieve. What's hard is to obtain a small amount of suitable fissile material and mount it in a delivery device. Testing is also difficult.

No, it’s a store of value. We COULD be using hedgehog treats for currency, but it spoils fast.
Scooby Snacks are far superior to hedgehog treats.

Gold is used for a lot more than jewelry. It's in your phone.

The barter and trade of commodities without the currency middleman. Simpler times.
Yes simple. Let's say I'm a baker and you have no goods or skills that I agree would be worth a loaf of bread. You could find another baker willing to trader or we would agree on a object or note that would represent the value. Preferably something that others would take in exchange for a service as well.

Actually those are "earphones". Headphones are speakers you wear on your head. Google it.

... genetic, metabolic and hormonal influences, too. so I think this one is quite obvious but not too much.
That's not stupid. There are plenty of other reasons for obesity, so a study can actually be useful to recognize which reasons cause the most cases of obesity.
I mean, a lot of people deny that nowadays, so maybe it isn't out of place as a news headline.
As opposed to thyroid conditions, diabetes, medications, sleep patterns, etc
Diabetes? Obesity can cause type 2 diabetes but diabetes has never caused anyone to become overweight

Maybe, just maybe the person was asking what actually started the fire? Because of course fire was the cause.
Its A Christmas Miracle!
Then imagine the 31st of December 1999. The 1st of January 2000 was both the next day, the next month, the next year, the next century and the next millennium. I was there! It was actually not crazy. No IT crash, the TV worked, no aliens, just some mediocre fireworks and then we were sent to bed.
The next century and millennium only started on the 1st of January 2001

A Woman Who Looks Like Her Parents
Half mark for this one. There are people who look exactly half and half of their parents, but many who don't.
Yea, my daughter looks exactly like me, but pretty. She looks nothing like her mother, which makes my ex furious every time someone points it out.

They may have the exact face of a relative from a few generations back, but the parent from that side of the family will also have some of that relative’s features. The other parent may contribute something like eye or hair color, height, or even voice. I have my mother’s exact face and even her smile, but I also have my father’s coloring and height, plus my aunt’s (my father’s sister) voice.
I think the point is she looks like both her parents, whereas some kids only look like their dad or only look like their mum
Yeah. Out of 5 of us, 4 look like my Mom, but I look like my dad. If it weren't for that, not looking like my siblings, I would suspect being the mailman's kid😉

Still don't know what the sideways hourglass one (fourth one from the left) is for...
I don't know about anyone else here, but, while I understand that it is a result of living in a global world and the fixation on the new and "advanced", I *despise* all of these f*cking icons, buttons, and touch screens that rule things. I do not in any way find them ergonomic, intuitive, or more accessible. If I had my way, I would have all words, rows of toggle switches, knobs, and analog gauges (which all actually *are* proven to be more intuitive and able to be operated blindly - look it up please) like I have in my home and in my 1968 Furys and 1967 Chrysler and Dodge.
Maybe it’s for people who can’t see very well so they did that magnifying glass thing they do on small things in pictures they want you to see. Bc i know if I saw that in real life, had it down in the table, i would have to pick it up and hold it kinda close to my face
I don't see an issue with this one. It is giving alternative (common) icons for + and -, indicating an additional function to the play/pause icon, and most importantly it increases the size of the icons for people who might struggle to make out the icons on the device and main diagram due to their eyesight.

Thats How Vaccines Work
Covid vaccines don't contain whole covid virus. They contain some mRNA from the virus, which is a molecule, not a germ. Edit: mRNA or DNA or spike protein...
To explain it roughly: There's no need to bring in a live culprit to introduce to your immune system. The mRNA vaccine hands out leaflets with a photo and teaches your body how a virus would look like if it actually entered your organism.

Load More Replies...Think of it like a Monty Python sketch. The guards are at the castle discussing swallows when the runner from the next castle over brings them a picture. "This bad guy here just waltzed right in and killed a bunch of our people! He's super dangerous, be on the lookout!" So they make photocopies of the picture and post it everywhere. "This is the ENEMY" the posters say. They even practice fighting him. They've heard from survivors of other attacks, and they know how he fights. Sure, the practice scares some of the people in the castle; all this rushing around and yelling, but no one actually dies, they're just frightened. When the baddie rides in, clopping his coconut shells together menacingly, the guards know just what to do because they practiced. They dispatch him quickly, and everyone can go back to talking about swallows. The guards are your immune system. The baddie is the virus. The wanted posters are the vaccine. The castle is you.
WOW. I have never (don’t hit me, please 🫠) been able to get into Monty Python. However, yours is the BEST analogy I’ve read so far, and I doubt I’ll come across one better. I’m curious if your gadgets include pipettes, petrie dishes, agars, and microscopes. Maybe a centrifuge or two. An autoclave, perhaps? (No need to answer. Still, though… BRAVA!

Apart from the M in Minecraft not being capitalized. It is the name of something and should be capitalized. I am no English expert, but I am pretty good at the subject. Not bragging I promise, just stating a fact.

Incorrect, more pixels just means more pixels, the quality depends on the data rate and the compression algorithm. You can have a lot of pixels and the quality is still bad
When you COULD tell them the correct word would be 'fewer' not 'less' but you know it wouldn't matter.
I must admit I learned this way too late. (English is my 2nd language)
Load More Replies...I don't really think this one is a bad or dumb thought. If someone didn't know what a pixel was or how it related video quality, this would be a good little definition that is fairly easy to understand. I had an aunt who used to keep a pad of paper next to her computer and every time she would run into a term she didn't understand, she'd write it down. Then when she saw me, she'd ask if I could help her understand what it meant (it was shortly before the internet became affordable, so no google.)

TRUE STORY (I'll try to keep it brief). McDonalds drive through. Friend in car has sensitive teeth so drinks warm water because cold water hurts. I order food and a cup of warm water. I s...t you not.. "I'm sorry sir we don't have warm water. We only have cold water and hot water.". Me:... Me: "Well, could you put some hot water and some cold water in the same cup to make it warm water?" Drive through lady: (pause). "I guess we could do that". Me: "Okay, do that please". We were laughing so hard we were crying but we were trying to keep it together at the drive through window because we didn't want to be mean. Maybe she was having a bad day and just had a moment. Or maybe she was dumb AF. Years ago. We still laugh about it if she wants some warm water.
I'm amazed they didn't then add ice to the warm water

Yeah I can definitely see workings being fed up of being asked why the drinks aren't cold without ice.
I live in a cold country, we don't normally take ice with things unless we are having one of our REALLY hot days. It seems weird that McDonalds has a culture of ice with everything..
Not weird, just a typical USA culture thing, part out of habit and imo part because ice costs less than drink and they all try to maximize profits :-/
