It’s no secret that some of the biggest things in human history were discovered utterly by accident. Penicillin and X-rays, to name just a few, are among them.

Of course, it doesn’t mean that game-changing inventions happen that often. And if Fleming returned from his two-week vacation to realize his petri dish had bacterial colonies that wouldn’t grow near the mold, it doesn’t mean two weeks by the sea would give you similar results.

That doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to play with chance and see where quasi-scientific DIY experiments will take us. Below is a collection of some of the most mildly interesting cases, like leaving a summer roll on a desk for 4 days to find it sprouting or quickly switching temperatures on a marble. Don’t ask why or what for—some things are meant to be "just because."

Now, I'm wondering if this is how Japan grows their infamous square/heart-shaped watermelons that can sell for around £80 (around $100.00 USD or 90 euros)

As the turn of the wheel goes, some of the discoveries and inventions without which we couldn’t imagine our lives today were made solely by accident.

For example, all-time fave breakfast staple Cornflakes were made by Will and John Kellogg back in 1894. Due to their Seventh-day Adventist practices, they were experimenting with vegetarian food. As the story goes, some of the wheat went stale and they tried rolling it flat and baking it. It got popular, so they tried a maize alternative which turned out to be even better.

Interestingly, the first popsicle is said to have been invented by an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson in 1905. The kid left a container of soda and water with its mixing stick inside on a porch overnight. In the morning, the original popsicle, marked as an Epsicle, was born thanks to a cold night and one child’s distraction.

Meanwhile, the jacuzzi was invented by Candido Jacuzzi back in the 1960s when the man made a whirlpool bath for his 15-month-old son who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.

Not many people know that safety glass, also known as laminated glass, was also discovered by complete chance. When French chemist Édouard Bénédictus knocked a glass beaker from the top shelf in his laboratory, he noticed that it shattered, but did not break completely.

It turns out, the beaker contained cellulose nitrate. It’s a type of plastic that left a film on the inside of the glass. The patent was filed in 1909 and is still in production today!

Very pretty. In case anyone is curious how this happens - the air above the fog is super-saturated, so it only takes a minor physical disturbance (e.g. turbulence caused by the turbine blades) to cause it to condense into water droplets. Same mechanism as airplane contrails.

Great visual of how the turbulence from leading turbines affects the downwind turbines. Has to lower the efficiency.

Probably not since they'd be naturally adapted to water unlike humans which is why our hands get pruney for better grip. Either that or their skin wouldn't be truly human-like and more fish-oriented.

Them same happens to the skin on the soles of your feet. Its thoughts to be the body's response to being in water for sustained periods. The wrinkling of the skin creates added grip for standing and handling objects.

For the last few years, randomly (it seems,) my hands will get like this while being in the shower for only like 15-20 minutes. It will happen for a few days to a few weeks, then it goes away and my hands act normal again in water. Anyone have any clue what it could be? It's extremely uncomfortable, and my doctor, (and apparently Google,) don't know what it is.

Oh how frustrating! I have undiagnosed weird stuff too have been searching for answers for 14 years now. My Group of doctors are inching towards a diagnosis and it seems like we may be close (and then we got shut in for the year...) Not trying to be "that person" because I know how annoying the suggestions can be, but if you're just starting your search for answers, I hope this is helpful....I've found that a good Naturopath usually will do more detailed testing and they tend to know more about obscure conditions. Good luck! Be well! Mzphit

it's called 'going to seed' as in; your lettuce is growing a seed head for the next generation of lettuce. If you want more lettuce, you need to do this with at least one plant every growing season.

Editing money is only illegal if the intent is to defraud. Changing the pic on the bank note or writing on it is not meant to change the value of the currency, then it is not considered tampering.

Looked it up, apparently has nothing to with power lines but how the tree is trimmed. Maybe it was trimmed in an attempt to grow around the power lines. Trees and power lines don't mix safely, the branches can catch on fire and kids climbing the trees can get shocked.

There are spores of botulism bacteria in garlic that grow in oxygen depleted environments (like a vacuum bag). The toxic waste of that growth is likely the gas in the picture. Always store garlic with access to air and don't make garlic oil unless you know what you're doing.

Note, vacuum sealed garlic, onions, and similar veggies are perfectly safe if you COOK THEM immediately after. If you need them to remain "food" then freeze-dry or air-dry them. Otherwise, freeze 'em in a non-sealed container.

My eyes do this without drops. A condition called optical neuritis causes it for me and can attack either eye or both together. It's pretty grim. When I was first seen by a dr he asked me what drugs I'd been taking because this is common in those with a drug habit. Turns out it's caused by inflammation of my optic nerves. It's painful, and makes me look a little crazy!

"Expiry" of food is not a thing. Dates are not regulated and can mean whatever the manufacturer wants. Generally these dates are "best before" meaning the food will lose quality but not usually be unsafe to eat. Of course that can change if the food is improperly stored, but continuing to use "expiry" around food is both meaningless and misleading.

Biodegradable doesn't mean it's from bioplastic. It only means it loses primary shape in nature and degrades to smaller particles. If it's biodegradable, but made from oil (gasoline kind, not eating kind), then that makes for loads of microplastics, which is horrible for the environment. Biodegradable from bioplastic - great (degrades to molecular level), from oil - suuuper bad (degrades to microplastics). Technically microplastics can degrade to molecular level, but not in a few lifetimes.

Can you wash away the charred residue or are the glasses forever damaged?

Same way cutting a few sheets of paper w/ scissors rarely results in even pieces. The force from the act of cutting produces small amount of friction that pushes against the piece below it, then both against the piece below that, and so on, resulting in cumulative effect so the very bottom pieces is wildly off the mark from the top.

Wouldn’t you end up with an elongated section of the picture? I guess all the papers must be folded just a tiny bit lower each time, to get the full face. And how did it get turned around—-top paper has him facing the other way? I guess the top paper just got turned around.

yeah, if you had it at an angle, this would work. Did they sack you, or were the prints already trash?

Nah that can't be right 'cause I went skydiving with a long sleeve shirt, which would have been about 200kph, and my clothes were just fine

Depends on the fabric I presume. This looks like some kind of wool or something similar

It went onto a successful career in the navy. I.e. I don't get your question.

If I hadn't seen the locker in the top right, this could have passed for the sky.
