Abandoned Olympic Venues From Around The World Or Why It’s The Biggest Waste Of Money Ever
The Rio Olympics is the 28th Summer Olympic games. The first one took place in Greece in 1896 and since then the event has been held in 19 different countries.
But do you ever stop and wonder just what happened to all of those huge venues purposely built to host the world's most famous games? Well, take a look at the pictures below and wonder no more, because Bored Panda has compiled a list of abandoned Olympic stadiums and villages from around the world. From Beijing to Berlin, from Athens to Atlanta, these pictures serve to remind us that while the games may be over, the memories live on.

Bobsleigh Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics
The bobsleigh and luge track at Mount Trebevic, the Mount Igman ski-jumping course and related infrastructure are crumbling more and more with each passing year. But adrenaline, fear and exhilaration are back on the bobsleigh track as downhill bikers Kemal Mulic, Tarik Hadzic and Kamer Kolar train on the graffiti-covered concrete.
This is the same track as number one. I've been there a couple of times and walked down it. Sometimes they clean it up for cycling, and the graffiti is in different languages.
Ski Jump Tower, Cortina D'ampezzo, Italy, 1956 Winter Olympics Venue
Interesting fact about these ski jumping towers is that the Swiss jumper, Andreas Dascher introduced a new style of jumping, which would soon come to be known as the Dascher technique. Before these Games, the athletes would hold their arms forward over their heads. Dascher reasoned that if the athlete held his arms at his side he would fly farther. Adherents to this new style dominated the competition.
Judging by the tarps around the bases of the stands, at least some maintenance is being done.

Olympic standards change over time. Calgary's '88 Winter venues don't meet today's Olympic standards anymore (though we still use and maintain our legacy infrastructure). Making the Olympics stationary wouldn't eliminate the need to build / rebuild new venues - it would just place that burden, both financial and convenience, on one or two cities.

You can't use ski jump ramps that are that old for current top-level ski jumpers. They need a longer landing zone with a different elevation and slope because they jump farther. The Olympic facilities we built here for the 1988 Olympics are almost all still in daily use. But new ski jump ramps had to be built next to the old ones because the old ones don't work anymore. I think we use the old ones as a recreational zip line now.
I live 20 km form this...every time i see this i say "horrible"
Bobsled Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
The disused bobsled track from the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics is seen on Mount Trebevic, near Sarajevo, September 19, 2013. Abandoned and left to crumble into oblivion, most of the 1984 Winter Olympic venues in Bosnia’s capital Sarajevo have been reduced to rubble by neglect as much as the 1990s conflict that tore apart the former Yugoslavia.
To be fair, much of what was made during Yugoslavia has been left to crumble. Here's a blog I wrote about for Croatian Radio Television. http://voiceofcroatia.hrt.hr/blog/472399/
Again, in three years of war, this was only one of the many tragic acts of destruction.
A bobsled track might be used to carry irrigation water to lower, drier areas.
the olympic games are a big waste of money! but please change the healine. berlin 1936? sarajevo? really? cheaper populism! good pics, but theme missing.
Again. WAR. A civiel war kill in thousands of people. Can you just stop provincie stupid arguments in your ignorant ways?

Well, it's Greece, maybe it was part of a chain reaction which led to the more recent economical crisis? There were huge protests against the Olympics that year, I remember. Greece was already in debts back then, if memory and logic serves me right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.
Load More Replies...What a waste they should turn it into a pool & activities area when Greece is lesd broke.
This is in Greece?? Where the olympics were born? As in Mount Olympus? WOW
Now this is just stupid, no reason this pool couldn't of been kept up and used for the city as a community pool... This is stupidity on Athens part...
Swimming Pool, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
View of the swimming pool in the 1936 Olympic village in Elstal, west of Berlin. The village, which housed over 4.000 athletes for the notorious 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, then under Nazi rule, was used as barracks for the German army shortly afterwards, and from 1945 as barracks for Russian officers, until the Russian army's final withdrawal in 1992.
Wouldn't take much to make it nice again. A few tiles & a lick of paint... ;)
That looks like it was gorgeous. Too bad no one buys these after the Olympics and they would be used for the public.
There is a competition pool right next to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin that is still used today as a public pool.

I have a new appreciation for ski jumpers.. no amount of money or fame could get me to ski down that ramp!
My Dad covered this event with the ABC TV crew and they received an Emmy for their work. Faded glory; a bit melancholy.

Olympic Sports Complex, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
A graveyard has been established in what was once part of the Olympic Sports Complex in Sarajevo for the 1984 Winter Olympics.
A cemetery is by definition a waste. Burying dead things in a huge patch of otherwise useful ground is one of the stupidest ideas humans have ever had.
Load More Replies...An area was "re-purposed" during the war, 1992-1995. Civilians were killed every single day and they were buried here... Please don't make a joke out of it.
During the agresion on Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995) Sarajevo was in occupation. Lot of inocent citizens were killed and there was not enough space for graveyard...unfortunately all cementaries were full. That is the only reason why people were buried on the place of sport complex. ????
Sarajevo had no option. They were under siege for many months during the 90'S and had nowhere to bury their dead. People were dying of hunger, lack of medicines and sniper fire!
Again a result of the collapse of a government and nation into bloody civil war that had nothing to do with the Olympics.
In Sarajevo's case it's the war which is to blame and less megalomaniac planning.

Antonio, you should probably have learned to discern between "Greece" and "Greek Political Parties" already.
If they get the money to do it before it degrades too much further this would make a great water park tourist attraction.
It seems that maybe the wheel doesn't need to be reinvented every 4 years.....with some repair and clean up France, Greece, Japan and others might be able to host future Olympics for far less than a complete new build for each Olympics.
I see an opportunity for a skate park with minimal effort. Not sure about the skating culture in Greece though.
Olympic Mascots Lie Unwanted, Beijing, 2008 Summer Olympics
Nini, left, and Yingying, two of the five mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, are seen lying among trees behind an abandoned, never-completed mall in Beijing. The fallen mascots are a reminder of the high costs of hosting the event. Their derelict state reflects the challenges that China has faced in finding new uses for its Olympic investments, with many venues falling into disrepair and some construction projects left incomplete.
I'm surprised someone didn't take them. Pretty cool. Remind me of Pokémon. lol You think the county would sell off these type of Olympic pieces to reclaim some of their investment.

This looks like an art installation. Gorgeous. So sad though how much waste happens after the Olympics leave, never thought of it before this article.
Me too Jennifer North Fitzgibbons, never thought about it because the Melbourne games in Australia 1956 the housing village was turned into houses for struggling families after and we still use the event stadiums to date.

The pool actually looks really clean. They might not be using the stands, but someone is using the pool.
Actually, looks like only the part where they took the photo is in ruins, the rest of stands look fine.
Load More Replies...This is the good pool. The bad pool which became yellow during the game is the training pool next to it. But this one also had chemical problems
The reporters seats are rotting, but the rest looks well maintained! Some of these photos are misleading. I understand they needed a story on how costly and wasteful the Olympic Games are, but they could have taken their own photos to confirm what they are reporting! Geez, get off you fat a**e and do some research!
How come these guys if it's so derelict can keep the water blue? Better than when the Olympics are still on in a certain country.....
Olympic Village, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
Deserted houses for the athletes in the former Olympic Village for the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.
A) there are not as many homeless in Germany as in many parts in the world, particularly not in rural areas. B) renovating it probably would cost more than errecting something new.
Load More Replies...These buildings weren't houses for the athletes. They were build after the Olympics to house the Russian army
The buildings on the photo are NOT from 1936! These are houses for soviet soldiers and their families who lived in this area after 1945.
The explanation is not true. These houses are modern. They were built by the Soviet army much later.
why don't they all live in RVs while they're there. They actors do when filming a movie. There was no need to make something so permanent that would be used temporarily.
Barricades Outside The Stadium, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
Considering the economy of Greece maybe there isn't enough demand for metal in construction so there isn't demand for scrap.
Load More Replies...Lol that scrap wouldn't have lasted two weeks in Mexico without somebody stealing it
On the flip side, the Winter Olympics in 1932 &1980 were in Lake Placid NY and that small village has thrived as a sports destination and Olympic training village for the USA and dozens of other countries, making it a popular location for sports camps, international competitions and sight seeing in a region that would have fallen flat without such investment. So not all the stories turn out bad.
Athens was one of the worst ones... thats why there are so many pics

Does the IOC not have a sustainability strategy that seeks assurances as part of a prospective host city bid that this doesn't happen to future venues? Maybe we should just be having one Olympic venue per continent and take it in turns.... Europe - The Americas - Asia Pacific etc
Such a pity..spending so much to create it...and it all lies in shambles!
all of these are a waste,so sad that the sites were not used after the games
indeed- every country has scrap metal takers. so why is this still here?

"most of the in Bosnia's capital Sarajevo have been reduced to rubble by neglect." Really? What a*****e wrote this article? You should be ashamed of yourself. Do you see war and genocide as nothing more than "neglect"? Is your last name Hitler?
Sarajevo has definitely not been abandoned by local people! They were put through a ghastly conflict recently (in the 90's). Its infrastructure was destroyed at this time. Since then great efforts have been made to restore this lovely city. It's now a great place to visit as a traveller! The priority for the local people has been to rebuild their infrastructure. Restoring Olympic remnants is less important particularly for a city whose snow record is such that it will never attract large numbers of recreational skiers.

Something tells me "this was built by Hitler's Nazi Germany" might not be the best selling point when trying to get new investors in. Olympic Stadium, Atlanta, 1996 Summer Olympics Venue
The Olympic Caldron can be seen in the foreground, as explosive charges weaken the Fulton County Stadium, Aug. 2, 1997, in Atlanta. The stadium, home of the Braves from1966-1996, was imploded to make room for a parking.
This is misleading. Turner Field (rear) was the Olympic Stadium...it was converted into the baseball stadium after the Olympics, which was the plan from its original construction.
Not sure what was misleading -- the caption states the Olympic Cauldron can be seen in the foreground, not Olympic Stadium. But thx for pointing out Turner Field in the background -- didn't notice that at first glance. Cool pic.
Load More Replies...Atlanta demolished their old stadium because the Olympics gave them a new one. How is this an example of Olympic waste?
Media sensationalism at it best. Most of Atlanta's Olympic infrastructure was used (and still is) after the games. Olympic Stadium was converted to Turner Field, the village is now college dormitories, GA Tech still uses the water sports venue, and the horse park that was used for equestrian events still hosts. We actually came out with a $10m profit, which is better then the multi-billion dollar losses incurred by other host cities. This picture has NOTHING to do with abandoned venues. It's simply progress, from a 1960s era stadium that looked like an ashtray to a more open, fan friendly stadium.
Took a long time to acknowledge this could actually have happened/I'd currently happening in an English speaking country... Hmmmm

Another winter shot. In summer this venue is a public park. The trench gets filled with water every year.
Olympic Village, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
The athletes village of the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936 was located in Elstal (today part of Wustermark) and was designed by Werner and Walter March. After the war, the Soviet occupation army withdrew an on-site and used it until 1992.
Yes 1936. Let's see, that's. .... 1,2,3,4 ... 80 years ago! *surprised face*
I believe the point made is about the wasteful nature of the Olympics. Everyone looks to short term pride as opposed to long term benefit. The Olympic legislative bodies should have more stringent requirements as to where the venues are made, so they may be made somewhere actually useful, and require a commitment for upkeep for a certain amount of time. This would allow the people to actually get used to and use the infrastructure, the governments the ability to figure out how to best pay or monetize the facilities, and make it quite impossible for countries which shouldn't be hosting the Olympics to host.

Very ironic, as the rest of the venues are still well kept and in use. The athletes' accomodation is now great apartments, the stadium is part of University campus, the pools are public. Odd.
No there's not an excuse, only that in Mexico this things tend to happen, politicians like to take the money for themselves and never mind the citizens or the places where they could spend time or have fun in for that matter. It's sad, but it's the truth.
I live here in Mexico and gotta say, this cinema was still used until the late 90s as I remember, big cinema chains got into the country and they actually got 2 huge cinema complexes less than half a mile away, it had become too expensive to maintain the cinema open so they had to close it down, still remember seeing movies like Aladdin and the Little Mermaid there when I was a kid
The Villa Olímpica movie theatre is opening soon as a cultural center. You can see it in fb https://www.facebook.com/cinevillaolimpica/
As far as we still inhabit the Olympic village, really overpopulated it, it's true that a lot of facilities are actually wasted, and all these kids living at the Olympic Village need a lot of cultural options, what a shame!

I live in ATL and the 1996 games were the greatest thing that ever happened to our city. Decaying areas were refurbished and ATL made the transition from an old Southern town to a beautiful international city. Most of the Olympic venues have been transitioned into other uses and Centennial Olympic Park still remains a jewel in downtown. No complaints here for the Olympics coming to my city!
It's unrealistic to think that any city is going to be able to use all Olympic venues on the same scale once the games are over. So long as they re-purpose the land/equipment for some use (even the graveyard), I don't see a problem.
Sarajevo and Athens and the 1932 Berlin sites are understandable, but the post-Olympics slump is a real issue. The 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, however, did it right. They used existing venues. They only built two new venues -- an aquatic center at the University of Southern California, and a velodrome in Carson, and those are still being used.
Hmm... I'd be interested in seeing how well Calgary is doing at using the facilities built for the 1988 winter olympics. Pretty sure it's sitting around 100% in use.
This is so poetic, it reminds me of the greek ruins. They are like huge art installations and a monument to mankind history.
It is sad to see the Athens facilities went to waste. I live in Calgary and our 1988 olympics facilities are still heavily used
Each host City should look at utilizing each Olympic venue after the games finish as much as they do in planning the whole thing beforehand. Then there would be some great historical memorials in use today. Sydney still makes use of it's venues.
