A.i.t.a

So I work in care. Have been doing it for about 10 years on and off (breaks for kids) but have been in my current role about 9 months. I'm just a care assistant. So when it comes to speaking to family or making medical ish decisions it's upto the senior on shift. I go into a lady. She had dark vomit (you have to keep an eye for coffee grounds as is dry blood which means an upper tract bleed) so I alerted senior. About an hour later I checked her again and this time I was certain i was concerned. I called rhe senior. Who was umming and Arring.... so I took lead and called 111 who sent an emergency ambulance. But whilst on call to 111 looked in her care plan in her room for details which aren't there (and I could hardly leave her half naked by this point as was cleaning her up) so I message her family to ask some details like dob ext. Technically I broke all the rules. I'm not allowed to contact family or even speak to them about a resident I have to redirect to senior and I'm not allowed to call for medical assistance. But I feel if noone else will advocate for my resident I bloody will. I'm waiting on hearing from the manager about this as I know its going to blow up. But I just think balls. I did what I would want doing if it was my family member. Why risk it when we had a gent not even a week earlier die of literally similar thing (he was sick blood. Sent hospital and died hours later) I know I could have handed off to day staff and let them do what they should but I have lost all confidence that the correct path would be taken. Might I add the family we're happy I contacted them and kept them upto date and they even gave me a lift home (I left work late as was on phone but had to get kids to school and babysitter had to leave). I feel I maybe shouldn't have acted so impulsively and should have let relevant people know and walk away like I'm supposed to. But I also know that would mean she would have had to wait till after handover and prob the meds round before anyone even checked in on her let alone did anything about it. Sorry for long post 🤣
