The battle of Aleppo is slowly drawing to a close after almost four and a half years of brutal fighting. A ceasefire agreement was recently reached allowing people to leave besieged areas of the city and travel to rebel-held areas in Idlib province, and pro-government forces, who have taken nearly all rebel-held districts in the city, are in the process of evacuating civilians and rebel fighters.
Over 30,000 people are reported to have died since fighting began in 2012, and another 20,000 are thought to have been displaced from Syria's biggest city. Once a popular tourist destination, and famed for its spectacular white marble, Aleppo now lies in ruins. Much of the city's ancient heritage has been damaged, including the Great Mosque, which was built in the 8th century, and the citadel of Aleppo, considered to be one of the largest and oldest castles in the world. The battle might be coming to an end, but some of the damage will never be mended. Take a look at some of these heartbreaking before and after pictures to see the scale of devastation for yourself.

The photography is spectacular but this whole situation makes me sad. What a complete lack of humanity.
Am I a bad person for feeling sad for the dogs cats and animals over there? But I feel sad for those animals...

Thank you to the photographer for capturing some of this devastation, as they say "a picture is worth a thousand words." 😢

This is gut wrenching. Seeing so much life in one picture and then the sense of death in the other

Aleppo
It looks like bombed Dresden, WW II, when thousands of people were captivated in the catacombs under the city, suffocated by gas bombs. Awfully sad.
Well... That history story just added to the already depressing pictures. 😰

How can people do this to one another? Those poor people to see their beautiful city so destroyed and it's citizens killed for living in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Aleppo
Sad and scary pictures :( so much beauty destroyed by the hand of human. I feel so much hatred and suffering from them. I can't imagine how hard to watch this must be for the survivors. All you have known is gone. I really really hope things are going to be better soon for Syria. Your beautiful country has suffered enough. Our country once sufferd too, the generation of my grandparents. After the revolution our president Václav Havel said: "Love always wins over lie and hatred." Dear Syrians I send you lots and lots of love from the Czech Republic and I hope you will win your freedom soon.

How about them isis every one forgot about them and their atrocities all the sudden??
Load More Replies...i just cant wrap my head around it, why a place of worship? what has it done to you? its one place where people feel safe and surrounded with the sence of peace in front of the one they believe. why destroy that? its unaccapable to destroy a church during war, you cant even take people who went into church for safety out of it, yet it is acceptable to do this to a mosque? it doesn't matter what you believe in, to destroy any place of worship could only be done by someone so morally sick and evil.
Aleppo
My god, I keep looking at all these pics and am just astonished at just how much war can destroy....Aleppo was a gem and now it has been reduced to nothing more than rubble, what is worse is that there are so many crimes against humanity being committed at the same time. If Aleppo ever gets rebuilt, it will take a long, long, long time....

The beauty of the before and the destruction of the now. Heartbreaking. Terrifying. Sad. Sad. Sad. But for the humans saddest of all.
As Syrian and Aleppo being my home town it breaks my heart to see my city leveled to the ground.
Heartbreaking ... especially having a friend who was born and bred there.. and there's millions like him..
Cannot imagine what it's like for the people who call this place home.what a tragedy
How can this happen ? It is beyond comprehension that humans can do this to their own heritage and beautiful history - disgusting
