so i was feeling a little nostalgic and went onto Carousell to see if i could still find some of my childhood memories. /sniffs

Singaporeans from the 1990s will SURELY recognise these things. Can you recognise all of them?

have other sg memories you could find on Carousell? leave a comment to share about it!

The Country Flag Eraser

REMEMBER THESE? used to collect them in a box and trade flags with our classmates back in primary school… they were easily available from the school bookshop or popular.

The Kuti Kutis

so we had intense ‘battles’ with our friends with these plastic animals. i remembered i always went for the elephant. or centipede. basically stuff with lots of curvy edges so it’ll “eat” the opponent animal up easily. and i did.

what’s your fave kuti animal?

The Chapteh

Okay. I need to confess. This was one thing I could never master playing with despite years of racial harmony day from primary school up till secondary. The teachers always put this as a “game station” during RHD, and after over 10 years of sg education i still cannot hit it more than 3 times! T_T

what’s your best chapteh score?

The Five Stones

my grandma could make them. so could I. i love stuffing them extra fat and puffy so it looks cuter.

that aside, just like chapteh – five stones was another one of those mysterious i’ve yet to master. anyone a five stones expert here? care to share any tips?

The Tamiya Car

ohai there fellow tamiya car racers! i remember how we would all ‘mod’ our cars to make it faster and accesorise it with cool stickers. then we’d meet up outside one of those heartland shops with a racetrack outside and compete. good old days.

any tamiya car fans out here still?

The Casette Tape

okay i still have some of these casette. but i can’t find my old school radio to slot them in anymore. i had a collection of old school chinese stars like Zhou Hua Jian 周华健, andy lau & more.

The Phone Card

“i’m at a payphone trying to call home..”- ok stop. this song doesn’t apply to us now- who uses the payphone these days? i mean, where can I find one even? but back in the old days my mum always made sure I had a topped up card in my wallet – just in case I ever have an emergency and need to call home. to add on, i had a crazy obsession with collecting these cards! Do you remember the crazy amount of cute designs they had?

oh yes. we also cut these cards at the sides and tied a rubber band to it to make jumping cards. anyone recalls??

The Sticker Album

so i liked collecting stickers too, in this thing called a sticker album which has yellow sticker safe papers to stick your prized spider mans and smurfs on. My favourite stickers were the “pop out” ones – these were fat and squishy. if i trade with you one squishy sticker, i expect to get at least 3 flat stickers back.

The Pager

now we just whip up our mobile phone at any moment to give a whatsapp or phone call. the old days my message gets read by a lady at the pager centre to my daddy.

btw, one of my fave pager codes: 17 31707 1

no prizes for guessing it. what’s some other pager codes you know?

The Bomb Bag

40c for 1, 3 for $1. or at least that was how my void deck’s mama shop priced them. all us kids would be kicking them around to our friends and hoping it’ll explode when it reaches them. great friends indeed, huh?

also recall The One That Will Not Explode – we call these the ‘spoilt’ bomb bags that seem to be stuck in a forever inflated stage…. only to have it explode in your face when you decide to be the brave one to check it out.

also, fart bomb bags. remember these anyone?

The Telephone Book

so we don’t have handphones back then and we all used the handwritten Trusty Telephone Book.

trusty until one day mum accidentally washes dad’s phonebook which he forgot to remove from his jeans back pocket.

there’s a secret to drying them – “don’t touch it! just put in the sun. let it dry and harden up. then you split the pages.”

The Autograph Book

birds fly high
hard to catch
friends like you
never forget <3

say AWWWWW. we used to pass this book around class to have all our bffs write in them.

I was from a convent school and we had this classic almost bitchy page now then I look back.. it goes:

GOLD FRIENDS, SILVER FRIENDS, Bronze friends… and finally, black friends. lucky to have never made it to the black zone before.
