Artist Criticizes Our Society By Showing Two Different Sides Of The Same Story (24 Comics)
Interview With ArtistI think most of us have heard of Moscow-based illustrator Gudim Anton. He is well known for creating short paneled comic strips full of visual puns and odd quirks that offer a fresh perspective on the modern world. However, as of recently, the artist has been circling around a slightly different idea. Anton created a new Instagram account called “YES, BUT” which includes just two-panel comics telling ironic short stories based on our current society and its values.
Gudim’s sparse style relies solely on his concise storytelling ability and he manages to convey familiar situations and images in a completely fresh and funny way for us to perceive. In his newest works, we see a lot of relatable topics, such as, for example, the psychology behind consumerism and luxury brands, or even controversial topics such as vaccines. We think it’s fair to say that all of these comics do a great job of showing what kind of society we currently live in.

Botox supposedly makes you look good but not the Covid vaccine. They don’t consider that no-one looks pretty in ICU hooked up to a ventilator.
And spreading the disease to others who would love to but are medically unable to get vaccinated. I've said it before, anti-vax people will have blood on their hands.
Load More Replies...Hyaluron has been around for much longer, so it is less intimidating. I got my two shots and I trust the vaccine, but I understand why some people are afraid. Fear is a feeling, and explaining sensible arguments don't help combat fear.
Sensible arguments can help combat fear, they can't competently neutralize the fear but they can help. I remember seeing a video of a big guy screaming from fear while getting vaccinated but he did it (and got applause from people there after it was done). I admire people with needle phobia that are so brave to get vaccinated, it might take some work but I'm convinced other people can get over their fears (whatewer those might be, sometimes they're just a result of misinformation) too and sensible arguments might not be enough for that on their own but they do help
Load More Replies...Lol. No. I don't know anyone who isn't getting the vaccine that goes out and gets cosmetic injections. Whether they should get the vaccine or not is an argument for them to make, but don't make it seem like they are all going out and having cosmetic surgery.
Joke's on you. Last wave I got Covid. Felt a bit sick for a few days and returned to work 10 days later. My "fully" vaccinated boss also got Covid and had to quarantine for 10 days. Vaccine doesn't work.
Vaccines absolutely work and they are the reason some very very dangerous diseases from the past no longer exists. Anti-vaxers are the newest nasty dease out there.
Load More Replies...First, we asked the artist if he had any major influences in his life that might've helped him to develop and refine his style.
“I think many factors could have influenced my style, it is very difficult for me to analyze myself, but I will try to highlight the main ones. I grew up in the '90s in Russia. This was the time when Western culture began to penetrate into a world that was rather closed and conservative. My older brother and I loved comics, American cartoons, TV game consoles. In childhood, we drew funny comics with characters from American culture.
As you know, after I grew up, drawing was not my main occupation. I graduated from a technical university (since I was successful when it came to mathematics, this is also another factor that makes my drawings very calculated and unemotional, if one could describe them that), and began working as an engineer. I changed jobs, grew professionally, but I was constantly bored and felt that my life was not as fulfilled as I’d like it to be. It was then that I realized that I’d like to return to those childhood hobbies, but with a more formed worldview.”
Me too baby! I lucked out recently when I found my cologne (Dolce and Gabanna Blu) which is usually over 80 bucks at a local thrift store for 3 bucks!! Full unopened bottle too! I’m not too proud to shop cheap!
Load More Replies...My rule was always that if the wallet or purse costs more in cash than what I'll ever have in it, I'm not buying it
My mother told me she rather has a 50$ hand bag and there is 500$ inside the wallet than a 500$ bag and there is 50$ inside. :)
Every damn time I see anything branded, and yet I ask myself what are you trying to prove? Probably bootleg junk.
and a potential invitation for getting robbed in some parts of the world, in some streets and in most tourist traps
Load More Replies...Yeah,you’re gonna buy an expensive wallet, using all the money you have and not even have any reason using the stinkin’ wallet
Riiiight. Only Americans feel the need for instant gratification and status.
Load More Replies...This one is funny because I really like snakes and have picked up way more than my share that were in my lawn just so I could look at them and say high (it's weird how they just kind of yell at me instead of returning a polite greeting). Also, if I were ever to get a tattoo it would be one that comes up my leg, wraps around my body, goes up my neck and it's head would be the side of my face. It's tongue would go over my chin and down the front of my neck and it's eye would be a ruby or emerald earring. But it will never happen because that would mean spending more money than I have and all the rest of my life at a parlor getting it done. But it would be cool. I'd let Bang Bang iron out the details of making it look its best.
Art, in any kind of form, takes a lot of time not only to practice but also to produce, therefore we asked Anton how long it takes him to fully finish his comics.
“It takes from a few hours... to infinity. There are many factors when it comes to creating comics. First of all, the speed of creation is influenced by how finished and how good the idea for the drawing is. Secondly, like any creative person, there are days when you simply cannot do it: even after several hours of work, I may not be satisfied with the aesthetics and graphic solution of the drawing. Then I return to draft the very next day, or I simply hide this work somewhere far away.”
Sneakers all day! Unless it's a fancy event, in which case the comfiest ones only for a short period of time.
Load More Replies...Causing yourself prolonged pain just to look a certain way in order to be popular with people. I don't get it
I don't feel this one should be on the list, tbh. the rest of them expose the hypocrsy, yet with this one, there's few women who'll say "no no, heals are super comfy". 99% of us say "they're uncomfortable as fk most of the time, but sometimes I just wanna dress up and they look nice. it's a choice I'm making consciously". so this one doesn't fit with the rest
Depends on the heels. Some can be made more comfy than others and don’t hurt as bad.
I've probably told this story on bp before but I was waiting at a bus stop when a woman selling amway walks up to me and starts trying to sell me amway brand cleaning supplies. She gave me this long sales pitch but all I really remember is "those other cleaners *takes a long drag of her cigarette* cause cancer.)
I call BS on anyone selling Amway at a bus stop hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Load More Replies...I am always shocked by nurses and doctors, particularly in oncology, who smoke
I am guilty of being a smoker. I've failed to quit a dozen times...I do eat well though because I want my kids to eat well. My kids don't know i smoke. There is shame. Lol im working on it.
Why do we HAVE to know whether or not something is genetically modified or not???
Well technically all our food is genetically modified ( unless wild harvested) through selective breeding. Things like grapefruits don't actually even exist in nature and "natural" variations of plants like almonds will kill you
Load More Replies...Being an artist is not easy, one can easily encounter a lack of inspiration, burnout, etc, so we wanted to ask Gudim about his ideas for the comics.
“I already have a formed absurd surrealistic style, so in moments when my head is not occupied with everyday problems, I look at the world through the prism of this style. This is already a part of my life, you can say that over the years I have trained myself to notice something and to be in a constant search for ideas.
Then I make notes, sometimes these are ready-made plots, sometimes just an associative array, sometimes just a situational subject that would give me an interesting plot. When a conditional deadline appears in my head (my body gives signals that I haven’t drawn anything new for a long time), I choose the most interesting idea at that moment in time and draw it.”
Oh... I didn't get it immediately that she was bored. I thought she was just tired. Trying juggling between her hobbies and daily survival (work, kids, etc.)
Honestly I think there is a certain age when you just sit down and fall asleep because you are tired. I used to laugh at my dad for it but now I often fall asleep after sitting down when I get home from work
Load More Replies...I thought this was a comment on IG people who live a life of pretense.
This one is so real! Influencera be like ... Shallowness intensifies!
I once fell asleep in the 3rd row center during a performance of Romeo & Juliet by the National Russian Ballet. Super talented people, incredible, just way out of my social class. I snored over the orchestra.
Your "life rules" end at the tips of your fingers. Then it's society's rules that need to be followed.
Physical lawsare not the same as laws though, they exist independant of humans and are not the result of human civilisation. Also, we call them laws more of as a metaphor as it is a simple way of comparing them to something we know.
If you'd like to see more of Anton's older works that are quite different from his current series "Yes, But," we suggest checking out all the previous posts on Bored Panda by clicking here, here, here, here, here, and here.
As we mentioned before, sometimes creative work can cause quite a burnout, therefore we asked the artist how he dealt with that as well.
“I have never felt overwhelmed by the work that concerns my projects because even after 7 years, I still enjoy drawing for myself and my audience. But in addition to creativity 'for the soul,' there are many other near-creative tasks that have to be done day after day: preparations for exhibitions, commercial projects, collaborations, preparation of materials for a future book, signing acts and contracts, etc. Sometimes it takes too long and I work seven days a week: right after my office work until the very night. Being in such a rhythm for a long time is exhausting, but these are just a few episodes, so you can say that I'm fine.”
This one is funny and ironic indeed, but honestly, I don't find anything wrong in this one. Life is too complex for the all-or-nothing approach. Besides that, resting is part of fitness too.
I don't think this is about all-or-nothing approach to fitness. I'd say this is more about people taking the lazy approach everyday, then pay to struggle in the fitness center, instead of taking your regular daily dose of exercise that just comes along on its own and skip the fitness center.
Load More Replies...If you want to take the elevator, take it. I've heard people get on elevators and guiltily say things like, "my knees hurt today". You do not have to justify taking the elevator.
I work out with weights to combat hypermobility. Stairs can be pretty hard on your knees. Also one time my blood pressure dropped dangerously low, stairs would have been incredibly dangerous then. You never know why someone is taking the lift: leave them alone
When I round at the hospital, I can be checking on patient labs and emails in the elevator rather than trying to look at my phone while going downstairs. It allows me to multitask.
My wife and I took a really cool creative staircase the other day next to an escalator. It was really fun and well designed. And we made it to the top at the same time as the people who got on ahead of us starting the stairs.
But then you'll need a roomba for your roomba-roomba

(and there's brava-kun as well, but that's for the mopping part)
We also asked Anton about how people reacted to his work.
“I've met a variety of reactions, some ranged from delight to hatred (who would have thought, after all, this is the internet). In this regard, the most significant thing for me is the assessment of people close to me and of people involved in the creative field. I've seen comments on Facebook where people just wrote 'sh*t' to a selection of my works. Without any arguments. I can’t take such comments as meaningful because it’s just a cry of hate for no reason.”
The creative process is not easy, but there are many enjoyable parts about it.
“To be honest, you can have fun at every stage of the creative process! For example, a great idea came to mind, did you frame it and write it down? You do that and get the release of dopamine into the body. More examples. Did you draw something exactly as you imagined, or even better? Did it turn out gracefully and succinctly? Here's some more dopamine. And lastly, did you share your work on your social networks, get the first positive responses? More happiness.”
There is a expression in my country where they say, "hands are cold, but the heart is on fire", this is probably the other way round.
Yeah I’ve heard that too! Cold hands, warm heart (often told to me by nursing home residents bc I always had cold hands)
Load More Replies...This one always gets me.. $1000 phone with broken screen which you can't afford to fix because you are still paying it off with installmens
Also if you look a few generations back, phones were a little bit thicker (in many cases not even true). The glass has improved a ton. It still cracks because whenever any improvement is made, the phone manufacturers make the glass thinner so any improvement is negated.
Load More Replies...Who would buy a $1000 phone and then not put a case or screen protector on it?
The screen protector glass on my phone looks like that. That's fine, it's still protecting the real screen, and at some point will be replaced.
But the camera is good af... I am android user and my dad gave his phoen to my mom. I set it for my mother (I only know a few of them) but there's alot of cons IMHO... cuz I tried to use maps but it failed to detect a destination. The place is popular but its not in the map. Duh.. its also complex and hard for me since I used android since I was teenager. Furthermore android is more cheaper including play store bills. I planned to buy Smule plan using my ipad and the price is 20X than the original price.. does it make sense?! Apple is for rich and richest only... oof me dead 'poor' 🤧...
When I buy new phone I always check how much replacement screen costs. Never had Samsung or iPhone, and never will
I haven't managed to crack any smart phone screen so far, and I've only had pretty cheap ones and I haven't even gotten screen protectors to any of them. My current phone is the first one that has a protective back cover, mostly because I finally got a model that had some cover options that I could get. It's one of those clear soft ones. My phones tend to die of old age anyways though.
I had a phone...Still have it. I love that phone. Got it in 2012. It fell into a drainage ditch and I had to call it to make it light up to find it Its been dropped several stories, hit the floor and lay with the back off in 3 to 4 inches of sewerage for an hour or more. Even threw it one time in a car,and it bounced of the dash and cracked the windshield...all with nothing more than a stick on screen protector. It still works. I'd be using it today if I could update it.Sadly, my carrier is shutting down the 3G network soon and that's the only network it will work on. 😢
We also asked about the inspiration behind the artist's Instagram account.
“First of all, I created an account on Instagram, as there is a very large worldwide creative community there. I was interested in the opinion of people from all over the world, not only my friends or subscribers from Russia. The idea of creating the account ‘yes, but’ came to me in the bathroom a little over 2 months ago. I just realized that I have too many situations that fit this format. In order not to delve only into it, but to leave time for my 'classic' absurd drawings, I made it a separate account. Now I have two folders in my head: 'main ideas' and ideas for ‘Yes, But.’”
Digital art and art, in general, is not easy and requires a lot of patience, time, resources, and in most cases even money, therefore we wanted to know how the talented comic artist started his own career in digital art.
“Back in the days when I was growing up, social media was only forming, but didn’t have as much power as now, so there was simply nowhere to share my digital art. I shared it only with friends and classmates who knew about it.
I didn't research anything on purpose, I just did it, then noted for myself what I liked and what I didn't. Those elements that I liked, I kept and developed, and those that I didn't like, I tried not to use in the future. There is a lot of variety of art around, there is no need to look for something special, as it is everywhere. It remains only to sort it according to your personal interests.”
It's even worse when you're out on your bike with it in nature and you lose one out of your ears. You'll never find it again.
Bragging about the price of your car, when other more utilitarian machines cost much more. There was one on here about a bus driver and the way he wrote about what he did for a living - driving round the city all day in his 100k vehicle.
Load More Replies...Two expensive chunks of yellow-painted metal. One is useful, one is for show.
A rich person can drive a $250,000 vehicle while a poor working stiff can drive a $400,000 vehicle. Irony.
Load More Replies...expensive machines but not both can do a real work. Irony is that Lambo also do tractors
We also asked Anton about his newest project series which is you guess it..."Yes, but!"
“I came up with this format more than 4 years ago. Then I began to notice that many people are doing absolutely contradictory things while not seeing anything contradictory in their actions. I started off with fairly obvious manifestations, such as chasing brands or living a healthy lifestyle. Now, these drawings are not only about people who are in their individual manifestation, but also about how contradictory society itself and the structure of the world is.
By the way, I got a lot of hate for the picture about colored hair from people with colored hair. And oddly enough, I’m not against the desire of others to look the way they want, but against people who dictate how others should look.”
Why be so cynical ? Seriously, I am a third world jaded depressed college student, and even I think this is bitter. France counts as third world, right ?
I think it's the owner of the team, support, cheers, rah rah. The he drives off in a limo and the team is stuck on a bus.
Who said they're trying to be unique? They might just like the look
I like my blue hair, and I like vividly coloured hair on the hundred or thousand of people who have them in my city. I am actually happy that other people enjoy bright colours.
Load More Replies...We both are and aren’t unique. People express themselves individually but there’ll almost always be someone else looking nearly identical to them. Comparing ourselves to others (as well as one person to another) should die out already because it’s a doomed way of thinking.
I like having brightly coloured hair :) makes me happy, and it also makes me happy when I see other people with brightly coloured hair. Then we compliment each other and it's amazing <3
Exactly. It's so nice to see meet someone with equally colorful hair and both of us smiling at each other. I really love that.
Load More Replies...it's trying to imply that everyone eho dyes their hair does it to be unique when that's not really the case at all
Load More Replies...Just because everyone else is different as well, doesn't mean you're NOT unique.
Im actually really glad a lot more people are dying their hair bright colours, it means I can do it too and not stand out too much
They want the BMW brand but can only afford an old rust-bucket. Surely better to buy a newer more reliable car that isn't a top marque...
Load More Replies...Or maybe the car is old, yet stills runs well. I drive cars until they have no trade in value then give them to a charity for scrap metal or whatever the reason they accept old cars.
I used to live in the north and everyone had a little rust on their wheel well. Not much you can do, you drive through saltwater Water for 6 months. Really, unless you wash the car every day. Who does that in -20⁰f.
Load More Replies...Artist didn’t look up this specific issue. So the car shown is a older BMW 3 series. The spot they drew the rust on is a common rust spot on the early years of that build because the rustproof bolts in that spot were defective and rusted causing that specific spot to rust, why you see so many rusted. I have a 2021 BMW but would Love a good E46
Why buy an expensive car if its needs doesn't suit your environment?
Guys already know to keep at least a one urinal gap between themselves and the other guy
But what if all the others are taken? Isn't it easier to build cubicles in bathrooms?
Load More Replies...that sucks, but I'm sorry to say I think I'm missing the point of this one. We injure ourselves when we tell people we're ok??
I get this is meant to be symbolic, but it just makes me annoyed they're doing the ok sign wrong. Bend your finger, dude!
I don't get what it's trying to say? That a tiny bag can't hold all your groceries?
They bought a teeny purse just because that's all they could afford of a brand name. They want the name and not usefulness.
Load More Replies...I got that because she bought the cheaper purse, she could afford to buy a new phone and whatever is in the bag.
... a guy makes these, gotta be. No way her pockets could fit a wallet, that's why we have the purses. Dumbass.
The person is making fun of the fact that the remote is wrapped in plastic (at hotels) to protect you from germs, but then chooses to wrap their suitcase in plastic to be able to see if it has been tampered with.
We wrap ours so bedbugs won't get in. Yes, from other luggage in the hold.
Load More Replies...That's not even the same situation... Some of these are just exaggerations. You use the remote just to change channels, and it doesn't get so damaged so yeah, the plastic wrap may be a bit much. You don't throw the remote the way most handlers do with your baggage.
I'm guessing that people usually think those with tattoos are lowlifes or thugs, but she is not?
Load More Replies...rings are hiding the word good, so maybe once she's wealthy enough to wear those rings, all she's left with is just life
It's talking about before and after marriage life ......... I guessss.
Imagine you had a child. Then, one day a giant prys them from your arms and you never see them again.
Load More Replies...This isn't true, cats wean their babies and chase grown kittens off.
Yes, and if a tiny kitten is removed from the mother by humans before it's weaned, and then returned, the mother may reject it anyway. I also question whether the adult cats bond with each other like this. This whole thing is anthropomorphizing, big time.
Load More Replies...another person that "thinks" they know something. It is NOT projection and if you had a soul you would understand animas and not "think" humans are the only one s that think or feel
Load More Replies...neither do humans brats. What's yer point? It's ok to steal another's baby because when the baby gets older it will leave?
Load More Replies...We were doing a trap fix and release program when our property got overrun by kittens one summer. The last two were the mother on her second litter that summer, she walked in, set off the trap, and just sat down. I think she wanted to be fixed. The last, she led in the last kitten of hers we had not gotten yet, watched him set it off. Meowed at him, then walked away. I always thought she was as done have kittens as we were of having them all over the place.
By the time kittens are taken from the mother, they are ready to go and she is glad to be shot of them, the father hasn't been around since the conception and all cats are relatively solitary except Lions who are matriarchies with toleration for one or two alpha-males. Brothers may stick together, but generally kittens will quickly attach to a new owner and be happy if they are loved back. I fear the artist is channeling human sensibilities in this one.
Or fathers. Fun fact: Mother cats can give birth to a litter of kittens from multiple fathers.

The people who cant understand these..... Are you serious ? Is your mind even working ? I found these amazing and awesome
A couple of them are ok, could have done without the casual ableism.
Some of these are absolutely just out of pocket but a lot of them actually make sense, like why the hell would you buy a Luis Vuitton purse if it's the size of a dime and can probably only store such things. Anyways, I find it weird how some people are saying they don't understand it and then continue to blame it on the artist, excuse me when I say this but what? It's not that hard to understand some of them first of all and also it's on you to use your brain cells to figure out the "head scratcher" that the comics are. It's a comic for Christ's sake.
