The boss-employee relationship is dictated by influence — the unevenness of power in the organization shapes how bosses and subordinates relate to each other. Sadly, as Reddit user anon-cant-quit has experienced, it can get pretty ugly.
The classic “you are replaceable” play has to be one of the oldest tricks in the book but a lot of companies still use it. Even if we’re talking about best performers, it’s not uncommon for managers to try everything they can think of just to avoid having to pay their employees more money.
However, as anon-cant-quit explained on r/ProRevenge, it doesn’t always work. Using their spouse’s business knowledge and outside help, they were able to successfully escape their toxic office and prove that, in fact, it was the organization that was replaceable. During these times, serious problems can arise for the organization. According to Bartolomé and Laurent, the most important and pervasive negative effect of the hierarchical structure can be summarized in the saying, “Trust flees authority.”
Good ideas often remain unexpressed because subordinates believe they will be punished for disagreeing with their superiors or showing too much competence. Honest feedback about the superior’s managerial style is withheld because subordinates are afraid they’ll be blackballed when decisions on promotions are made. Maybe that’s also the reason why OP’s former colleagues bailed on the company and joined their new venture?
A very high number of people express dissatisfaction with the places they work at. A recent study sought to more accurately define the term “good job” and determine how many Americans had them.
The researchers found the top three components of a “good job” were enjoyable day-to-day work, a sense of purpose, and what anon-cant-quit lacked, a stable and predictable pay. But they also discovered only 40% of employees felt they had these things. I hope the rest will also find a way to stand up for themselves.

As an employer, always have a no compete clause in every contract. As an employee, never sign a contract with a do not compete clause.
Non-compete clauses are not forever. It can be anywhere from 6 to 24 months where you cannot work for competing company.

I actually did something similar. I was fired from a place because I was too old they said. I opened a business exactly like theirs and took many clients away just because they liked me. I'm not as big as they are but I make more than when I worked there so I am happy.

This happened to me, but slower. I worked in a theater arts school that was an adjunct to a regional theater. I loved the job, but my boss was incredibly passive aggressive. Little by little I took on more responsibility, which was fine because I enjoyed doing it. Reviews were always 10 out of 10 but the highest raise I ever got was .25 an hour (!!). I was continually told that was all they could afford. Meanwhile my boss was getting big raises every year even though I was taking on more and more of her job. (turns out her very rich parents were making substantial "donations"to the theater). Everyone at the company knew I was basically doing her job, and after I had to fix two MAJOR mistakes on her part, she started to see me as a threat and started setting me up to fail. I could see the writing on the wall, but I waited for her to have me fired so I could collect unemployment. They offered to demote me (presenting it as a position change) but I said no.
They told me if I didn't take the new position they'd have to let me go. I got up and walked out, took my things and went home. They had to hire 3 people to take my place and the place of my part time co worker who walked out a few weeks later. The school went slowly downhill, and while COVID was partly responsible, she was eventually let go and the school was shut down. Which is sad because it was a great resource for the students who often went on to study at a local performing arts academy and even college. I, in the meantime, retired.

A place I worked at as a Technical Writer (writing instruction documents), brought in a HR company to survey the employees. The company then began laying people off, including managers from several departments and after 8 years I was changed from full time to part time. A drop in income of 40% was not going to keep me around with a house and a child. I left but passed on information to a colleague. Some of the tasks I did, no one else in the company did and it was something I spent years learning. Not long after I left, the colleague left, the likely person who would have taken on my old work after that has left and 15 people in a 3 month period left. Moral: Don't p**s off your staff. My manager was great, he would speak up on things if he didn't think it was right, got sacked because of it. I looked at the latest release document from the company and there were so many errors. I moved on to something better, get paid way more and I am appreciated for what I do.
Welcome to free market. The employer thinks you are compensated fine and you don't. The employer is free to replace you and you are free to go somewhere else. My dad lost his job at 63, about 18 months before he would qualify for a pension. He was the head of the sales department. He had been selling the same product for 30 years. After being let go, he called their #1 competitor and got a job for a very low wage+ commission. He bet on himself and got all of his old accounts to switch to the new company, over $10M in annual business. He had in his contract that if he got a certain amount of business he would just have to maintain his accounts. So after a few months worth of work getting all his old clients he worked for 7 years for them getting paid about 5 grand a month to work around 100 hours a year.
If this is actually a true retelling of a story, I was with the protagonist here up to the point of satisfaction from ruining the old boss and his business. The employee certainly had a right to leave and start a competing business, and the boss sounded like an unappeciative a$$ (again, 2 sides to every story). But, did his callus remark warrant near total destruction? I don't think so. A successful competitor delivering a significant financial hit would have accomplished the same lesson. To feel some satisfaction in ruining the guy seems equally callus and disproportionate. Remember, karma can change direction in an instant. Don't be a Richard.
Yeah. Sure. Even if true I reckon my country isn't the only one where clauses in employment include that you cannot open or work in directly competing companies for x months or even years after your employment ends.
In most states these are not enforceable as no company can prevent you from making a living.

My father used to be the second in command at a private financial consulting firm. Most of their business was conducted on the road, actually visiting clients. They ended up having to let one guy go when he thought it'd be a great idea to start work late, leave work early, take long lunches, and it never occurred to him that the firm's actual clients would complain to my father and my father's boss about his lack of punctuality. My father had the pleasure of letting the guy go. Next thing my father knows, he's getting calls from the firm's current clients. Former Employee has basically stolen my father's work product, put his own letterhead on it (without bothering to change font style/color), and sent out solicitation emails to poach clients from my father's firm. Apparently Former Employee was too stupid to realize that the firm's current clients respected my father and his boss enough to call and give them a heads-up about what Former Employee was doing. My father's firm sued Former Employee, won, and when Former Employee whined that he "couldn't afford" to pay the judgment, the judge smiled and said, "That's okay, we'll put the current judgment in an interest-bearing account. You can either pay the entire current judgment now, or, by the time you get the money together, pay whatever the judgment's gone up to because of the interest."

My boss(I was his assistant manager) said the same to me after 10 years. While two of my fishing buggies and I were enjoying fishing got to talking about the situation and one of them said his company had an outside sales position available. Having never been in outside sales I was nervous but I applied and got the job in a field I knew nothing of. After a year I had increased sales for my territory by 75% and at 14 months my old boss called me and asked I would come back and open and manage a store. So sometimes we need to get a kick in the butt to change our direction for the better.

A bit contrived, this story seems. Possibly over-elaborated, exaggerated, and a bit of a fable. The owner said, allegedly with the language of "you're more replaceable than the others", which is still a horrible thing to say to someone with many responsibilities, but according to the title of this article, seems a bit of some readers-bait to spike emotional clicks to read more. If this were real, the owner would be in the wrong, and it doesn't seem with such a valuable company with such a small footprint on the employee front would say such a thing, considering the view of who does what does not have to be focused to much to see who's more important (they are all part of a well-oiled machine, obviously). The details are scarce (for a reason, I am sure), but the entire story sounds as if it was made up from what someone wished they had done after being told they were replaceable for some other reason other than doing an exceptional job and getting a lesser bonus. This has happened to me. It takes about a year to train me. Leaving freed me and screwed them. Really, I am feeling so good without that negativity.

There are many ethical considerations to take before "stealing" clients and employees. In my state, most companies have a non-compete clause in their hiring paperwork. The idea of destroying a person's retirement because you felt you deserved a larger bonus, seems petty and cruel. The old boss's shortcomings are apparent. Your's are glaring. Karma is real. Doing wrong for wrong will ultimately bite you.
You cant steal all the employees- niche companies force workers to sign 2 year non competes, and sales team can be sued for stealing old clients. Not even remotely believable. And the boss applying to work at the new company? Lol trying so hard.

My father used to be the second in command at a private financial consulting firm. Most of their business was conducted on the road, actually visiting clients. They ended up having to let one guy go when he thought it'd be a great idea to start work late, leave work early, take long lunches, and it never occurred to him that the firm's actual clients would complain to my father and my father's boss about his lack of punctuality. My father had the pleasure of letting the guy go. Next thing my father knows, he's getting calls from the firm's current clients. Former Employee has basically stolen my father's work product, put his own letterhead on it (without bothering to change font style/color), and sent out solicitation emails to poach clients from my father's firm. Apparently Former Employee was too stupid to realize that the firm's current clients respected my father and his boss enough to call and give them a heads-up about what Former Employee was doing. (Part 1)
My father's firm sued Former Employee, won, and when Former Employee whined that he "couldn't afford" to pay the judgment, the judge smiled and said, "That's okay, we'll put the current judgment in an interest-bearing account. You can either pay the entire current judgment now, or, by the time you get the money together, pay whatever the judgment's gone up to because of the interest."

OP was so great they surpassed the 15 year number 1 business with 75% market share in a matter of months. They were able to handle all that incoming wave of work on their own for months until hiring people from their old company and this incoming wave of work was large enough to collapse their former company which had 15 employees mind you. OP was a f*****g HR person. The most useless and replaceable people in an organization which require no brains to do. An entire business operating for 15 years just fell to s**t in a matter of months after their number 1 employee who is an HR person left. My God what kind of bonus do you expect as a useless HR person? You don't bring in any revenue and you are replaceable!!
The OPs former boss has been in business for over 15 years and based on the story they had 15 employees and 75% market share in the region so it seems like the boss was making good money but their whole retirement plan rested on solely selling the busines? LOL The boss has accountants and guess what? Those accountants would have advised him of the huge tax savings he can take advantage of by investing in retirement accounts especially like DBA plans. Then he would have financial advisors for separate investments that are not retirement accounts. The boss would've done the retirement savings just for the tax benefits alone. Now the company collapsed in a matter of months and the former boss had no savings or other sources of income and ended up applying at OPs spouse's firm? Who is stupid enough to believe this garbage? While two of my fishing buggies and I were enjoying fishing got to talking about the situation and one of them said his company had an outside sales position available. Having never been in outside sales I was nervous but I applied and got the job in a field I knew nothing of. After a year I had increased sales for my territory by 75% and at 14 months my old boss called me and asked I would come back and open and manage a store. So sometimes we need to get a kick in the butt to change our direction for the better.

My BS meter is ringing off the hook here lol but I don't think she's a complete liar, just devoid of self awareness. My question is, where did she get the money to not only directly COMPETE with a decade plus old business - but offer all the extra amenities and doodads they couldn't? My guess is that instead of her 'perfect awesomeness' winning the day - she had a very rich family member who funded everything and she used their money to take all of this guys best employees and then offer everything he couldn't until she eventually ran him out of town and ruined his livelihood because he was a jerk once. (Struggling financially is very stressful and explains why he couldn't give his *bestest* employee a bonus.) Then she had the complete lack of self awareness to not only pat herself on the back for it but brag to the internet what an awesome incredible hero she is for 'pulling herself up by the bootstraps!' It was still fun though lol.
Turns out business school was dead wrong. Labor is an asset not a cost.This is why Germany destroyed our automotive industry. And not just with a 'union' but a seat in the boardroom. We need to relearn the fundamentals of business if we want to create rich communities instead of just rich individuals. Spouse unemployed d/t illness.my mom was in ICU battling covid,but they wld not allow FMLA. I HAD NO WRITE UPS ,NOR VERBAL/WRITTEN WARNINGS-.Had A NEW manager of 6 months THAT I'd STILL NEVER MET. A bit contrived, this story seems. Possibly over-elaborated, exaggerated, and a bit of a fable. The owner said, allegedly with the language of "you're more replaceable than the others", which is still a horrible thing to say to someone with many responsibilities, but according to the title of this article, seems a bit of some readers-bait to spike emotional clicks to read more. If this were real, the owner would be in the wrong, and it doesn't seem with such a valuable company with such a small footprint on the employee front would say such a thing, considering the view of who does what does not have to be focused to much to see who's more important (they are all part of a well-oiled machine, obviously). The details are scarce (for a reason, I am sure), but the entire story sounds as if it was made up from what someone wished they had done after being told they were replaceable for some other reason other than doing an exceptional job and getting a lesser bonus. I call shenanigans.
This has happened to me. It takes about a year to train me. Leaving freed me and screwed them. Really, I am feeling so good without that negativity.
I've been there but all I do is show them how replaceable I am. Usually it takes about 6 months to train someone like me.
You seem to have a few naysayers who don't believe someone can be exceptional at everything they do...I remember previous employment where one individual at the same level as me told me to back off, I was making everyone else look bad. There are many ethical considerations to take before "stealing" clients and employees. In my state, most companies have a non-compete clause in their hiring paperwork. The idea of destroying a person's retirement because you felt you deserved a larger bonus, seems petty and cruel. The old boss's shortcomings are apparent. Your's are glaring. Karma is real. Doing wrong for wrong will ultimately bite you.
You cant steal all the employees- niche companies force workers to sign 2 year non competes, and sales team can be sued for stealing old clients. Not even remotely believable. And the boss applying to work at the new company? Lol trying so hard.

Not me. If someone provides requested services to clients, they're responsive to client needs. The OP also provided better jobs to former colleagues. It's not the OP's problem if the former employer's business went down because of incompetence and a refusal to listen to others.
