Which reminds me of a really f****d up injustice of a firing. I had a friend who worked at a 7/11. She was pregnant and put on night shift. Someone came in to rob the store at gun point. She just gave them the register. She was fired the next day, apparently for aiding the robbery and 7/11 managers and owners of that location didn't give 2 flying f***s she was pregnant and working alone at a dangerous hour, in a dangerous neighbourhood.

I sat down on a milk crate for a few minutes and she jumped all over me. This beeyoch never worked a single closing shift in three years. I used to work midnight shift for a gas station. I'd finish all of my work early and then sit on the counter reading books for hours on end until/unless a customer came in. Apparently, I drove the corporate people nuts who reviewed video, but since I was the only one willing to do midnight shift, my manager left me alone.
When I worked at the airport as an aircraft fueler, we had a new manager transfer from another airport. I guess he decided he was going to be the new sheriff in town and lay down the law. I was denied a raise by HR after consistently working 60-70 hours weeks, and my VP (who had supported and requested the raise for me) told me to stop putting in the extra time, work my 40, and spend that extra time applying to new jobs. Within a month, a meeting was called to "mutually part ways" because my work wasn't getting done.
I was gratified to learn that they had to hire two people to do my job after I left.
Edit: Sucks to see how much this resonates with people who have been in a similar situation. I left this job back in 2015, thankfully. The VP is no longer there either, and good for him.
I'm a very loyal and meticulous worker... to a point. If it doesn't get rewarded, I work to the rule. Exactly what is in my contract and that's it. No extras whatsoever. They hired two people and I actually temped for several months. I went back to visit (was still friendly with people there), and my former boss brought me in her office and started crying because she was so overwhelmed. Hence the temping. When your vp tells you to apply for other jobs, it means they are going to fire you and are being nice enough to give you some time to find something else. When you showed no sign of leaving on your own, they fired you. Basically, they gave you a month’s notice.

I can't say where I last worked, but I kept track once, and with my speed, I contributed to about $91/hour in revenue for the company. My pay rate was still $15.20/hr. I work somewhere else now, with a higher base pay rate (albeit slightly, at $17/hr) and a more predictable work rhythm.

at my old job we had a lady who carried her department on her back. we didnt work the same shifts often except on weekends, but i absolutely loved her. she was funny and witty. she left for another opportunity in a completely different field. i heard her department supervisor had to hire 3 people to replace the work she was doing, two of which quit after the first week. apparently they are still trying to replace her
I asked the CNA I was working with to stay with a confused patient, while I went and put a new IV in another patient.
The CNA left the patient alone.
She fell out of bed and got a big bloody skin tear on her arm.
After I took care of that, I went and found the CNA and told her the patient was injured because of her insubordination.

The CNA went to mgmt and lied about me. She said I called her by a racial slur and yelled at her.

My mgr asked if I could be rehired. HR said no.
When my mgr quit to start her own nursing agency a year later, she hired me.
If you're able to collect unemployment, that means the employer was found to be in the wrong by unemployment and they have to answer to them. It think companies get fined if they unfairly fire someone. I think. Hopefully.

Was on the edge of a serious burnout and had a sick leave for two weeks. The day I returned, I got fired. Yup, you have learned a valuable lesson in life ; give most employers a proverbial inch and they WILL take a mile ; f**k 'em, do the bare minimum unless you either get paid a shed load of money or enjoy what you do. Never work for a bad employer, if you do, start looking for another job and leave as soon as possible : also, if your new employer asks why you left, tell the truth, if your ex employer was an arsehole your new employer will most likely have more respect for you if you have stood up for yourself.

I handed my notice in after years of going above and beyond and watching the company going in a direction that I was not comfortable in. After working a minimum of 55 hours (regularly 60+) a week, over 7 days, for nearly 2 years (missing so much of my kids school stuff), I handed my notice said I was grateful, wished them the best. Got genuinely asked by the MD if it was because I "wanted more hours" - like no dude, I NEED less, I'm doing 4 people's jobs, I'm paid sh*te and treated like an incompetent non-entity by the new managers who reside so far up your ar$e that I can see their face when you yawn! I was literally in the middle of a mental breakdown and barely surviving, I'd lost 4 dress sizes in a year, my hair was falling out. Seriously wtaf?!?!

I was a brand new Engineer out of college. Like green. I got a job offer at an aircraft factory (Cessna, a Textron Company) as a Quality Engineer. I had been an intern for 3 years and they helped put me through school. I worked in a _Projects_ group designing new floor layouts and how these business jets flowed through the process. I had always received good performance reviews and that is why my internship turned into a scholarship and into a job offer.
When I started full-time, I was assigned to a facility across town that did sheet metal stuff. I remember walking into the office on my first day, introducing myself to my new manager. She immediately turned away, refused to shake my hand and ignored me.
The next 6 months were the same. She legit would not speak to me, would not give me projects, would not schedule one-on-ones to give any direction, and if I was on an email chain and she was looped in, she would take me off. I would walk over to her and she would hunch her back and try to cover whatever she was working on so I couldn't see, as if it was some big secret. Finally I got involved in some continuous improvement projects, I was asked by our director to run with a few special projects and I started (in my opinion) really finding a groove.
Finally she pulled me into a conference room, yelled at me for 2 hours (yes 2 f*****g hours) about how I was not doing the things she wanted me to do. She gave me a self-help book and told me I needed to read it and tell her what was wrong with myself and she terminated me without HR or anybody else knowing.
To this day, I never knew what her problem was or why she hated me from the moment I introduced myself. I have a wonderful and successful career and currently manage quality for 4 factories in a Swedish conglomerate - and if I ever see her again I will tell her how I have modeled my management style after promising myself I would never be like her. My employees always know:
* What is expected of them
* How they know if they are succeeding
* Where they can go for help if they are not

I almost got fired for having to go to the hospital. I was on the phone with work, barely able to speak as my lungs were filled with phlegm and infected, high fever, high heart rate, pounding headache, muscles killed. HR was begging me to come in complaining how busy they were. Waaa waa. Of course it's a call centre and I sounded like I was on my death bed. I put my foot down and spent the night in the hospital, paid $30 for a note for work, that HR declined to accept. Spent the next week home. Apparently I was supposed to go in that initial day to fill out a sick leave form. ... Oo I.. I can't. Wasn't fired but forced to go from 5 to 3 shifts a week, drastically reducing my income and putting me in debt. Still sounded terrible when I went back to work. All the Team Leaders did was whine how bad I sounded. One told me to "stop it". Another tried sending me home for coughing, when I wasn't coughing. Someone else was. I hated that toxic sludge place. It was a big market research company.

I refused to come in 15-20 mins early unpaid for my shift. I was always 5-10 min early but they decided they wanted me there earlier. I carried on as normal as I’m not coming in if I’m not being paid. Turned up for a 12pm shift at 11:49, no one would look at me when I arrived then was thrown in a meeting and fired for being “late”. Was out the door before it even hit 12.

They then give her a written warning for sickness despite her saying she could stay and work.

I got fired once for putting in my 2 week notice.
The only other time I've gotten fired was working for a trade company, during the first week. I was a supervisor, and there was a second supervisor on site. I got a call that my wife had been rushed to the hospital, which was literally less than a mile away. I asked the other supervisor if I could go to attend to her, and he said "sure, no problem, I've got things here. Go." I returned to the job site later to find the boss there, and he let me go on the spot for leaving the team "without a supervisor". He knew what had happened, and still fired me. I won't lie, that one kind of pissed me off.

I once got let go from a place because the urine screen came back as positive for opiates. I did not take any opiates but had eaten poppyseed cake and it showed up in my drug screen! Couldn't convince them that I hadn't done any opiates. People need to be aware that anything that contains poppyseed will show up on urine drug screen.
The first one actually makes sense in some cases. Depending on the reasons he was leaving and the type of job. Potentially not enough work to justify him being there so why keep him? No need to train/handover so same thing. Maybe they were worried he was disgruntled and may sabotage the business during that two weeks and so on. Heck some places have to pay a couple weeks severance pay when they fire you. So maybe his boss was actually giving him a sneaky gift of two weeks paid holiday. As for the latter, I'd like to know what happened to the other supervisor? Did he get his a*s kicked too? Where was he when the boss was firing the guy for going to the hospital? Was there some kind of safety standards they *had* to adhere to that needed two supervisors?
My Parole Officer wanted to make sure I actually had a job, so he went to my employer listed on my file to surprise visit me on the job. I did home wiring so I worked at different job sites and rarely in the office. He called me to say he was going to charge me with a violation for lying to him about my whereabouts (this could've landed me back in prison for my remaining 10.5 years sentence). The owner of the company had to speak with him and vouche for me. My Parole Office didn't charge me, but the owner sure did fire me that day. Finding a job with a felony isn't an easy thing, and it wasn't long before my PO threatened to charge me with a violation if I didn't find a job soon 🤦🏻
It's hell having a government funded babysitter whose soul purpose is to put you back in jail. People are skeptical about hiring someone with a criminal record to begin with but then having to deal with said babysitter makes them feel even worse about having you as an employee. I get wanting to follow up and making sure that you're not lying about a job but there has to be a better way of doing it.

I was 19 and working as a janitor at a large self storage facility, where most days were filled with sweeping and mopping endless hallways of flickering fluorescent light. And when someone went delinquent on their bill (after a 3 month grace period), I would be instructed to empty their unit and dump everything in the trash outside. Once or twice it was a person who died, but otherwise it was a pretty common to see a room full of absolute junk that someone got tired of paying for. Banged-up furniture, garbage bags of ratty clothing, stacks of old magazines, it was usually pretty hoarder-friendly stuff, and not that I'd want any of it but the policy was I had to throw it into the dumpster outside no matter what it was.
One day I get notified to empty out a unit, so I grab the bin, cut the lock, fling open the gate. The room is full of huge cardboard boxes stacked to the ceiling. I open one up out of curiosity, and it's full of brand new, unopened Gundam models. The entire room is full of them, dozens of boxes with dozens of models in each, and I'm talking the $50-$100 ones I saw for sale at my local comics shop every week. The manager would check up on me once or twice a day, and that morning he walked up and I showed him all of the brand new merchandise and said there has to be a better system than trashing all of this. He said rules are rules, something about insurance I didn't understand, and told me to throw them all away.
So I went and I backed up one of the complementary U-Haul style box trucks, picked a few models out for myself, and loaded it up the truck with the rest of it. On my lunch break I drove over to the Children's Resource Center that I'd volunteered at during high school, it's a place where any child (but usually poorer ones) would go after school for arts and crafts and activities to keep them busy until their parents got home. The people at the drop-off dock were so grateful, before I even left they were handing them out to some extremely excited kids. Drove back to the self storage place with enough time to eat a sandwich and smoke a cigarette before clocking back in.
But that's not why I got fired. I got fired because the manager came to check on me that afternoon, and after awhile of looking around, found me sitting cross legged on the floor of the janitor closet with model parts spread all around me, happily assembling a sweet translucent Zaku model. I was so entranced I didn't even hear him come in, I just hear this long, drawn out, exasperated sigh. I look up and he just says "keys" and that was that. I spent the rest of the week assembling Zakus and Valkyries and lying to my parents about getting replaced with a Roomba.
So you take the stored items outside and put them gently in the dumpster, policy fulfilled. Then, since dumpster diving is legal in many places, you take them out of the dumpster and load them up. But don't play with your toys when you're supposed to be working. The firing is on you.
Somehow, "getting replaced by a Roomba" sounds like something from a The Onion article or a dystopian realistic fiction novel.
Be that as it may, at the moment when you hear these ominous words "You're fired!" it is worth remembering that the real impact of this situation on your life can only be assessed years later. After all, if Colonel Sanders had not been fired several times in his younger years, he could have worked as an insurance salesman all his life, and the world would not have known the taste of KFC wings and whatnot. So just scroll this selection of dismissal stories to the very end, maybe add another one in the comments if you want, and always remember that any termination is best accompanied by the words: "I'll be back!"
A business I went to long ago was hiring and I got the job. Right after I signed all the paperwork, the department manager comes in and asks who I am. I tell him I was just hired as a temp. Manger says he never authorized any hiring and fired both me and my boss on the spot. I did not work for this company at all and they fired me. :(

Why am I not surprised ; the last time I went into one of these places it seemed to be being run by two spotty teenagers who had done too many drugs who really, really didn't want to be there - one of them had to be the 'manager' . High standards are not really their forte ....
Ugh. Subway. I was at one for a 3 hour shift on my first day AT LUNCH: the busiest time of any and all fast food/restaurants. Brand new employee. Subway expects new hires to be able to not just memorize every sandwich, but also be able to put them together insanely fast, correct and perfectly. Everyone knows it takes time to learn. Mainly it's "learn to do it correctly and THEN work on speed." But not at Subway. They expect master perfection within the first 45 minutes, to be able to keep up perfectly with those workers who have been there months or years already. I got taken aside by the owner not even 1.5 hours into the shift and was told even though I'm very friendly and super customer oriented, I'm just not fast enough and would never be fast enough. I got fired and sat in my car for a little bit crying. Didn't want to leave with tear blurred eyes since I had a 40 min drive home ahead of me. I've heard too many similar stories from other ex-sub workers, sadly.

My only time getting fired, I was 13-14, working at a go kart track. I had been there about a month when I was left alone for a solid week to take care of the track as the other 2 track attendants sat around smoking, drinking, and chatting with the boss. Yep, I had colleagues who were taking looooong breaks for cigarettes, their lunch break was not 1 hour as per policy, but always between 1.5 and 2 hours. We were working as support representatives, so I was taking the cases, just sitting on my desk. At the beginning of the next year my manager told me I'm not getting yearly bonus because my colleagues said I'm spending too much time on my phone and I'm not working enough.

Because my job "was eliminated". This was code for "getting rid if you and hiring someone to replace you at half the salary." Their scheme was less than a stellar success because: The person they hired was an idiot and could not do it, the customers got severely pissed, they gave me $15K severance if I promised not to sue them, I took their money and still sued them for age discrimination, and won.
My boomer manager kept insulting me, blaming me for things my coworker did and kept getting an attitude with me any time I didn't bend over backwards to accommodate her ego.
So one day she asked me why my coworker did a certain thing. I told her I had no idea. She pressed me. I said "How am I supposed to know? Explain it to me. Tell me how **I** am supposed to know what **he** did." She said "I don't know", so I walked away to keep doing my job. Next thing I heard was "You know what? Just go! Get the F**K out!"
I got un-fired by her boss a few hours later, and transferred to a better location, but being able to cold shoulder her after months of asking her nicely not to belittle me was quite satisfying.
Similar but it was a zoom mtg and mgr so thoroughly lost her mind, screaming at me for not knowing some detail about software I'd never used, yhat she didn't hear me calmly say, "I quit". I was a remote worker but had turned in everything to corporate with an hour. Took them 3 days to "check" on me by email, instantly followed by my termination notice. 3 extra days pay!!
I don't know why this reminds me, as it's not similar, but I'll never forget Pam at the Wexner Center Cafe. She would berate me for not having as many sales in my register as another girl, but she would assign registers to people, and Jamie always got register #1. I wanted to know how she thought I could have as many sales when *naturally* customers would order at the closest available register and *not *walk down to register #3 where I stood. same. so years ago, i worked for a relatively nice office. nice as in the office looked nice and the doctors were nice. front staff were not. i would sit and read on my lunch. we were required to clock out for lunch. got told i was being anti-social. so i started leaving at lunch (as other workers did) and sitting somewhere to read till it was time to come back. got told i was supposed to stay and chat. the chat was MIND NUMBING. gossip galore and i dont have any patience for that. Then i got told that i needed to let one of the ladies do makeup on me. i always wear very simple makeup. some foundation when i have a break out and a simple gloss. if im feeling fancy maybe a light eyeshadow. the manager and the girl who wanted to do my makeup were always caked with makeup. they also made comments about my smile (i have my dad's smile and im quite proud of that). i told them no, a week later i was let go for insubordination

Another unfair dismissal. I hope the people in these situations sought out legal advice. Money isn't everything, but if you get fired unfairly, you should hit them where it hurts (in their pockets)
Unfortunately, much of the US has "at will" laws, and people can be fired at will. They don't need a reason. This is where unions are important.

At least you locked the door. I showed up to my store once in my day off and the guy working left the store unattended to get food. There were several customers in the store so I hopped on register and worked for like 15 minutes before he even came back! I didn't even fire him, just wrote him up for not locking the door. Learned why we had so much loss before I took the store over.
Gamestop does this a lot, understaffed, underpaid, entire days worth of work with no ability to take breaks for food, also chastised when eating food while working as they didn't give us breaks to lock up the store when no one was there but me. So scummy of a company.
I got fired for submitting my time sheets on Monday at 8am when I got into work. By policy, they were to be in by noon on Saturday, but my Fridays ended in the field so I just did then on Monday mornings. My bosses didn't even look at them until noon on Tuesday so it had 0 impact on them. I drove home from being fired feeling relieved because of how unhappy I was at that job.

I thought I was getting a “data entry” job. It was indeed data entry to an extent, but most of the work was actually taking items off the shelves in a warehouse and taking pictures of them. (These pictures would be scanned and then entered into a system with a description.)
I thought this was below somebody with my “obvious” skills as an engineering student (who had failed to secure a summer internship in his field). I told my boss that the work was really a two person job — the other person could do the warehouse stuff — and she agreed and said she’d look into finding another intern to help.
I took that to mean I could slack off posting on Warcraft 3 forums all day until they hired the other guy.
One day I came home to a voice mail telling me to not bother coming back.

I talked my way into a job at a software company when they put a hiring notice in a local paper. I had no idea what the software did. I still don't. They hired me as a trainer and no one ever explained what the product was. I did a few weeks where I was trained on the software but literally none of it ever made sense to me. It was like they were speaking gibberish. One day I showed up, a lady I had never seen before gave me a check, and walked me out to the parking lot. No one even ever said "you're fired" or anything. It's one of the strangest things that ever happened to me.

that happened to me once. online class i took for 2 credit hours my last year in college. Half the class was posted before my other classes started, so I got it done and out of the way before I had to attend in-person classes. I forgot the other half of the assignments were posted after midterms until I got an email about the date for the final. My GPA was high enough to take the hit, and I just took an extra class my last semester to make up the hours, but it still sucked.

In college I had a temp job doing quality assurance. I figured out their internal site had profile pages that freely allowed the execution of Javascript in the form fields. I thought it would be funny to make my profile look crazy, changed colors, added some animation. This way when you went to the list of employee profiles you might get a chuckle and it would bring attention to the fact that it allowed executing code. Something I already brought to their sttention previously.

Came down with bronchitis on a Sunday. The doctor provided a doctor's note and told me to return the following Monday. They terminated me Friday.

I was sick on a Sunday, informed them Sunday. Called Monday with a doctors note with orders stating I was to return no earlier than the following Monday. My manager told me, "ok, feel better." Friday came around, and I received an email stating I was terminated effective immediately due to absences. This was my first absence. I asked if I qualified for FMLA, no. I asked if I could resign instead because I loved what I did and who I worked with, no.
You CAN be fired as an at-will employee at any time for anything. I didn't mention the illegal outcomes, as I assumed that was implied with common sense.

That happened to me once a long time ago. I couldn't take above a whisper so I took a picture of the doctor note and emailed it. That wasn't good enough. I had to actually speak to the manager. I was glad I got fired. Got a better job a few weeks later. Been there ever since.

Worked in a DIY store, 10 minutes before my shift ended I moved a pallet cage of paint cans (slowly) to the warehouse and when I got in there one of the sides came off along with half of the paint cans which spilt all over, anyway there was about 2 minutes of my shift left, so I moved the pallet over the paint, covering it a bit and went home. It was all caught on CCTV

One day I was moving a pallet of Scott's lawn products in large bags and I turned around too fast and several bags of expensive lawn products split open. At that very minute the CEO of the parent company walked through the door. He glanced at my mess and went on to tour the warehouse. Then he and his entourage left, walking past me again. This time he didn't even glance in my direction. I figured I was about to get fired from my first job, but I never heard a word about it. We sold the broken bags at a really good price and I was there for another year until I graduated from high school.

They are, but those of us who have long enough hair to wear it in a ponytail should be fully aware that hairs can fall out, and in a restaurant/takeout setting this can be bad. If we want to keep our ponytails in such places we should at least wear hair nets.

I was fired from Panera as soon as I walked in the door for my first day of work. I showed up 10 minutes early and walked in 5 minutes before my shift started. The manager met me at the door and said I was being "unprofessional" and threatened to call the cops when I pushed for an explanation. Turns out the employees did lots of drugs while working and were probably high out of their minds.
I'm an electrician and I was given my final warning for having an untidy van. It wasn't great but I was told to tidy it over the weekend which I did and then still got my final warning and dismissal the following week. What really rubbed me up was that my boss was the biggest culprit for having an untidy van and I had likely learned this trait as an apprentice from him. Honestly though looking back I was probably sacked for other reasons and have since been aware that rarely are you fired for the reason that your boss want you fired for. When they want you out they'll find a reason so best to self reflect on your other failings than be pissed off for being fired over something trivial
Worked at a car dealership in college between semesters. Sold a ford raptor for like 80k and the commission was like $200. After that I would go to my desk and just study for school. Didn’t try to sell anything after that. Knew I would be fired, took them 2 months to realize I had done absolutely nothing since the last time I sold the raptor. $200 for selling a 80k truck, lol.

All by myself, literally only me.
