Here’s How The US Slowly Became A White Supremacist State Explained By A Guy On Twitter
As one would expect, in these past few months, millions of people on Twitter and other social media platforms have been posting a lot of important and much-needed information surrounding the racism-related problems in the United States. For instance, a man named Michael Harriot, a writer at The Root, created an educational Twitter thread in which he thoroughly analyzed the evolution of white supremacy and explained why it’s still extremely hard for Black people to vote.
In his Twitter thread, the guy explains the history of institutional race-based discrimination towards Black people, highlighting some of the most important events and patterns that led us to where we are now. Without further ado, we invite you to read through this much-needed Twitter thread covering serious issues we’ve been witnessing for the past hundreds of years.
Harriot begins his thread by explaining how the Constitution of the United States is “a manual for setting up a white supremacist state”

The author also talks about Thomas Jefferson’s views on slavery and Black people in general

The thread has since gone viral on Twitter, with the original post currently having over 9k likes and 3k retweets.
Hundreds of people have been thanking Harriot for spreading such important information on social media. “Again, I adore you. You are one of the few people I would love to sit down with over dinner (I would happily cook whatever you wanted) and just have a conversation,” a user wrote. “Mr. Harriot, please turn your threads into a YouTube channel. It would reach so many more people and they need to hear and see this,” another user commented.

I like the way that a change from calling it 'racism' to calling it 'white supremacy' manages to put the onus on the perpetrator instead of on the victim. This is important because all too often, consciously or unconsciously, victims are blamed for being victims. This happens to rape victims, to victims of domestic violence, even to civilian victims of war unless they are on the aggressor's side. It is common for Europeans to be shocked by racism in America but racism is alive and well here too, just ask the Roma. It is maybe as much about White Supremacy (or Supremacy of the current Elite) as it is about not having to face up to being unethical supremacist bullies when the preferred narrative talks about 'civilizing' others, or 'offering them a chance to better themselves' and other such self-aggrandising platitudes.
Yes, I love how you said the supremacy of the current elite. Too many people outside of the US think that the average person over here is a white supremacist, and that we're the reason that institutionalized racism is still in place. But the truth is, most of us are quite opposed to it, but since the lite who are currently in power are not, it stays. Of course, that being said, some of the average people here are, in fact, racist, and it would be a lie to say that isn't true. But for the most part, the conservative elite are fueling (institutionalized) racism here in the US.
"They are deemed incapable of exercising it discreetly, and therefore not safely, for the good of the whole community." Whoa. THAT should be in the Constitution. America would be a much better place right now if antivaxxers were not allowed to vote.
Jay, buddy, who’s the one who hangs on to Trump’s every word and imagines that sunlight shines out of his every orifice? Why do the uneducated fools who follow Trump because he’s their person: loud, brash, idiotic, and uncivilized call themselves intelligent and free thinkers, whilst those of us who think for ourselves and decide that *gasp* experts know what they’re talking about, and we should listen to them are called fluffy barnyard mammals.
This person (tweeting) is a writer for TheRoot and has plenty of historic knowledge about what he's tweeting about. (also wrote a novel you should check out) Little known fact is that history is open to interpretation. I choose to believe Mr. Harriot's view. Makes the most sense. See all of what he is describing playing out. Long story very short: white people gonna "white people"that thang
Yes, the author is not “whining.” Minority voter suppression is real and has been independently verified, for example: https://www.propublica.org/article/why-do-nonwhite-georgia-voters-have-to-wait-in-line-for-hours-their-numbers-have-soared-and-their-polling-places-have-dwindled. ProPublica is an award-winning, non-profit organization that specializes in investigative journalism on important social issues. It was founded by former employees of the Wall Street Journal and is currently run by directors from such global companies as VMware, Akamai, Time Warner, Moderna and venture capital corporations. They are well funded and staffed by professional, degreed journalists.
Choosing to believe a narrative doesn’t necessarily make it accurate
It always makes me smile when the USA keeps banging on about "The Free democratic blah blah blah" virtually every other first world country did a better job much earlier on. The USA has always been an ultra conservative reactionary society.
I agree, but only partially. Not the entire US is that way. I know that there are plenty of Americans who aren't ultra conservative rightists, but sadly, they currently aren't the ones in power. There are a lot of us who disagree with most moves that our government makes, but we're powerless to do anything about it for now.
In point of fact, the usual interpretation of the 3/5 clause is that it allowed the South to claim more representation in Congress than its "citizenship" count really allowed ---- meaning that states heavy in those of African origin and descent counted those people to get Congressional seats in the House, but in no other way as citizens without about ten miles of red tape at best, and death at worst.
They were real living people though. The south was arguing that slaves should be counted in census. The north negotiated them down to 3/5. This was not an effort to strengthen the south, it was a compromise between non slave states and slave states.

This is one of the best, and most important things I have ever read. He should be running the country. White supremacy fits this better than any other words. My eyes are now opened.
Despite his wisdom on American history and his view of the facts, that does not a president make. He’s a wonderful person, I’m sure, but I would want to know a hell of a lot more about him before I advocate for that.
I totally agree, of course. Always really check in to who and what they are, and stand for, ant voting records etc. his views are just very fresh, and make a lot of sense. Have been diving in to this race currently,, and am positive the current sitting man, is a dictator is training wanna be. Not good for the US. But , I am also more than willing to listen to different view s on history. I believe the history given to us, is kind of candy coated, and people of color and women, had much bigger parts than we have been told. I love history, but we need more , when choosing a leader. But, it’s more a statement saying that his ideals are fresh, and this day and age, it should be addressed more completely.
I don’t understand how Kemp can fall himself a governor when he became one by cheating.
To teach people how to deal with injustices is a difficult job. Even in this report we do not hear what the real problem is. It is not about white and black neither about up and down. It goes way much deeper and has to do with the absence of wisdom. In this case it is about the male side of wisdom - the absence of it is part of the collective father-wound (absence of male wisdom) which is the reason for war and violence on earth. The mother-wound makes this problem even much stronger.
y'all are gonna come after me, but as a white person im just going to say that white people suck. I'm not condemming white people, I for one know that I am not a racist and I fully support the BLM movement (that entire sentence sounded like pandering oh my god) and there are plenty of good white people, but think: have there ever been as many racist movements against people of color then in america? Since we showed the f**k up, we were killing people and stealing and all around badness. you may say that it's not our fault, we didn't do that personally, don't persecute all white people, but we still teach history that is inaccurate just to make white people seem better, knowing full well that that wasn't how s**t went down, and we still teach that to children, who then grow up not knowing the horror of america's past, who THEN become the same people who say "police don't hurt you unless you do something wrong." there are good white people out there, but we still need to get better.
Well said. As a white person, I agree with you. I’ve seen a quote many times that says something like “If you stay silent you automatically side with the oppressor.” We need to speak up, we need to do better. Racism and white supremacy is still around, institutionalized racism is still around.
To the T!!! RIGHT ON, BROTHER!!
not exactly on some of the historical stuff, some taken out of context. Mostly just a political screed. Speaking as a historian.

Anyone condemning one race for another is racist or a supremacist. You are a black supremacist. How about a few facts....... ** Racists are the ones that keep racism going, because their lives are pitiful and useless. They hate and despise anyone that has what they want....and they are unwilling to work for what they want. ** Twice as many white slaves were traded throughout Europe by black African men, than were traded in the USA. The Irish were sold as slaves in the USA as well, but you don't see any blacks whining about that, do you! Black men sold and traded blacks for slaves all over Europe before they ever started trading with the states! Black men are the ORIGINAL slave traders to the world!! ** The first slave owner in America was a black man. ** Contrary to how the media portrays slaves, most all slaves were much better off than poor people living on their own. Slaves had shelter, food, clothing, and access to medical supplies when needed.
Logically Reasonable ?
** Modern blacks use their color as a crutch. Anyone using their color as a crutch, or a means to berate, threaten, intimidate, or cajole others is a racist (among other things). **Modern blacks only care for money, material possessions, and power over others. It is rare that I have met any black in my life that has not been this way. Usually, they are people that had to work hand to mouth all their lives, and never asked for a handout from anyone, including the government. ** Most non-black people don't really give a damn what color you are. We just want to be around decent, civilized, intelligent human beings that can hold a civil conversation, have REAL respect for life, and treat other people as people, not like potential ATM's. ** Blacks in the USA have been catered too for so many decades, they don't have a clue what it is to be an honest, forthright, dignified, civilized human being. They've been taught to lie, cheat, and steal...and kill.....to get that almighty dollar.
You are a wretched person.

I feel the term white supremacy is racist in its self, not all white people are the same, if you really want to see a change start with the children and how they are raised, kids start learning from an early age and what you say around them is what they're going to pick up and start to believe, how do you think they learn their first words.
This man never said all white people are white supremacists.

Where did he blame his failures on anyone? Or even mention his failures? I read through it twice and can’t find what you’re talking about. Can you also point out what exactly is false about what he said?
I think that you won't get a coherent factual answer to your questions.

The 3/5ths thing was bullshit. Oddly enough it was adopted as a means to stop slavery. The south had most of the slaves. The south wanted them counted as full citizens. If this happened, the south would've had complete control of government by representation. Also, the part about slaves rising up and killing whites was a real thing, but for good reason. Wise people understood that you can't just take a massive populace who are uneducated (by design) and all at once put them in society. What would they be forced to to? You can be illiterate and ignorant (in the literal sense) and be expected to hold a good job. Ending slavery had to be done in stages for the good of all. Not to mention, ended slavery all at once would've destroyed the economy in which the slaves were supposed to find jobs all of a sudden? It's a matter of pragmatics, not virtue signalling, and the best solution was more nuanced than this guy suggests.

Affirmative Action is institutional racism.
If there was no racism....there would be no affirmative action. But you know that.
@“truth”monster: Have you ever actually had to fill out a report for AA? Because I have. It was for a company that I didn't think was diverse at all, but we passed. I've noticed a lot of insecure white men get up in arms about AA, but you should be happy to know that workplaces are still allowed to be mostly white male. If you are a white male and can't get a job, it's not because of AA, it's because you suck. Thinking that supporting AA is racist is a logic disconnect. The purpose is to ensure that people who are commonly discriminated against have the same opportunities. If the population of Black people in your area is 75% and yet your staff of 500 is all white, then yes you will probably be audited. A lot of times simply interviewing a diverse candidate pool is enough to satisfy the requirements.
@truth, it's not ”special rules” you ding dong. They just review businesses to make sure you aren't ONLY hiring white men. If you can show them that you haven't received applications from anyone else, or show them that they weren't qualified, then you're fine. But if you receive qualified candidates and turn them away for a less qualified white guy, you’re screwed. You are trying really hard to blame others for your own failures, and it's not going to work.
AA is also there to empower women, which it does not, so how do you equate that to racism?
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
@ "potato". Discrimination based on race is racism. AA is discriminating on race. Which is racism. Special rules based on race is again racism, as it requires you to discriminate based on race to label those who benefit and those who do not, awarding special placement for only certain races.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
So is racism good, Saara? Because by supporting AA, and programs like it, you are supporting racism...because racism is bad? Do you see the logic disconnect?
AA benefits white women more than ANY ethnic minority demographic...since you claim to be so interested in "Truth".... https://www.vox.com/2016/5/25/11682950/fisher-supreme-court-white-women-affirmative-action
@"Truth" Monster: You know what? It is. AA is systemic racism in favour of women, People of Colour, and people with disabilities. And it doesn't do NEARLY enough to combat the institutional racism against these groups in EVERY OTHER PART OF SOCIETY. Take a real hard look at wages, imprisonment rates (for equal crimes), education, voter suppression, and so much more... and then come back and tell me white men have a harder time of it than any minority. Go ahead. I'm waiting. Just come with citations, please.
Y'know, I wonder who TruthMonster worships first in the morning: Uncle Vlad, Comrade Kim, or that guy at FOX News...

Parmeisan, at least you are conscious enough to realize that AA is racist. Of course, that means your continued support of it then makes you a conscious racist. For someone decrying racism, it puts you in a rather awkward position, does it not? Racism is bad, but racism is good, because racism is bad?

I was taught that the things that make me uncomfortable are the ones I have to examine and learn more about. it's not fun not knowing how to feel, but... it means the mind isn't closed. That's a bonus @Peyton.

*sigh*. This guy, and most of the commenters need to google famed economist Thomas Sowell. Look up his history first, then read and listen to him. He could destroy this guy's nonsense in every facet.

What a complete racist. This whole article is garbage and not true. What a way to blame others for your own failure at life. Blame it on white people lol. What a complete idiot.

He conveniently left out all of those amendments that contradict his (accurate) dismissal of the formers but whatever
He didn't. He mentioned them. And the way states got around them.
He mentions the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Which ones do you think need to be included as well?
To @Edwards reply to @Tabitha L, what does that even MEAN?

@ "potato". Discrimination based on race is racism. AA is discriminating on race. Which is racism. Special rules based on race is again racism, as it requires you to discriminate based on race to label those who benefit and those who do not, awarding special placement for only certain races.

Please!!! Look at AA in South Africa if you want to see who it benefits!

Parmeisan, at least you are conscious enough to realize that AA is racist. Of course, that means your continued support of it then makes you a conscious racist. For someone decrying racism, it puts you in a rather awkward position, does it not? Racism is bad, but racism is good, because racism is bad?

Its also institutional sexism. One does not negate the other.

Not trying to argue, but when non-whites go to white country they usally get cheaper housing, and other advantages, but when whites go to non-white countries they get killed and robbed and raped
Really? Funny, my husband's white father and stepmom went to Tanzania, they got scenery, wonderful food, dancing, great weather and awesome pictures. No killing, robbery or rape was done, they still rave about it 5 years later....maybe you are just racist?
