I disagree, for me anyway. I have vivid dreams almost every night, and I'd guess maybe 10% are unsettling. I always seem to be able to quit when I want to.
Probably because your brain uses dreams to run some kind of overflow vent. Subconscious and conscious worries, together with all the stuff your brain had to put on the back burner but recorded anyway is paraded past you at night. Hence the often surreal but vaguely familiar settings.
Not mine! Mine are full color, positively exciting and sometimes I can really feel and smell things! I love my dreams. Sometimes a nightmare happens, but rarely.
Mine are pretty cool. Most seem like I'm watching a movie. I've even gotten up to go to the restroom, came back and picked up where I left off.

I love nightmares, I don’t know why but for some reason the rush of adrenaline you get when you wake up is SO worth it. Plus, it’s like starring in your own horror movie!

It is real; it's caused by your sympathetic nervous system... (Fight or flight responsonse). It's to allow your brain to take in as much info as possible. It's not just about fighting for life, but if your brain is very excited, it will do this as well.
