I wish there was a place to get a good pad Thai where I live. There’s a Thai place but I don’t think they are actually good cooks. It’s all gummy when I’ve ordered it - like just a mass of gummy noodles with very little other ingredients. And it was expensive. I shall not trust that place ever again.

I love biryani. I hope you don't mind if I add a little something here: Sindhis take biryani very seriously. To them, it is not biryani without potatoes. However, if you go north to Punjab and other regions up there, they add an Afghan influence to biryani, often omitting the potatoes and adding roasted nuts and raisins. I'd definitely say that if you want to try this dish for the first time, go for the Sindhi version first.

I've had one with potatoes and cashew nuts. It was a punjabi restaurant but not sure if they're catering for Scottish tastes or being authentic.

One of the great inventions of the Ottoman Empire that spread all over the region. In Israel the best way is in a Laffa (A folding flatbread that is from the Jews of Iraq, a Jewish bread from there), and you want Charif (A hot pepper sauce from the Jews in Yemen, something non-jews in Yemen dont eat), then add in herb Tomato Dip (brought by Jews from Poland), and marinated roasted eggplant (brought by jews from Romania), and add in fries. You get the real Israel feel of the whole Jewish diaspora's items united in one dish

In India they go by various regional names, which also depends on the ingredients used. ' Chapatti' and ' Paratha' are the most common iterations.

I's say that chapatti and parathas are flatbread, made of a more structured dough. Dosa, on the other hand, is made with a batter similar to crepes.

This is not Irish. Cabbage bacon and potatoes is but this picture is not it. No one in Ireland would sprinkle snipped chives over that rubbish tiny portion of mash missing its scallions or kale, and also no butter well. Outrageous. And that’s a bloody chop not bacon.

The crust in the picture is not as satisfying as it is homemade. Normally the crust has to be like pork chips, really really crispy. The meat has to be so tender that you could pull out the bone without any resistance. Touch it and the meat falls of the bone... This kind of tender. I think in the us, an equivillant to the tenderness would be pulled pork. But you can't compare it, Schäuferle, (the word comes from the german word Schaufel= shovel, because the bone is shapes like a shovel) is one of the best Sunday dishes there is in franKonia 😅

It must be under the snag. I know they introduced that rule because of OH&S reasons. But here in WA we got around it… we don’t use bread… we use bread ROLLS so we don’t have the sauce or the onions leaking through or dropping out as easily 😉

This is our national dish. It is rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan (so fragrant, mmm!), fried peanuts, fried anchovies, boiled egg and cucumber, and the most important thing - the sambal (chilli and onion paste which is sweet and hot with a hint of tamarind). Yummyyy... Additional side dishes of chicken, beef, fish or squid are optional. We usually eat this for breakfast, but it is available for lunch, dinner and supper too.

everything but the anchovies sounds lovely, though I would probably eat the side of beef happily

Fascinating! What is the food on the right side of the dish, between the greens and what I assume are beans? And what spices are used?

That's fried peanuts at 1 o'clock. The round things are Chinese crullers, or "You Tiao" in Chinese. It's deep-fried dough like doughnuts but it's salty. "Bubur ayam" means chicken porridge. The rice is cooked with either water or chicken stock.

Sorry Barbara, but I have to say it... I can understand some geographical and linguistic confusion, but when it comes to gastronomic culture, please do not mix us up with the Dutch... Pretty please. Belgian gastronomy is one of the most succulent experiences you will find in Europe. And the Dutch... well... They have edibles. ;-)

" The English word "pasty" derives from Medieval French (O.Fr. paste from V.Lat pasta) for a pie, filled with venison, salmon or other meat, vegetables or cheese, baked without a dish. Pasties have been mentioned in cookbooks throughout the ages. For example, the earliest version of Le Viandier (Old French) has been dated to around 1300 and contains several pasty recipes. In 1393, Le Menagier de Paris contains recipes for pasté with venison, veal, beef, or mutton. " Petit patés en croute, France : pasty-63e3...0de592.jpg pasty-63e36e50de592.jpg

I grew up in Northern Michigan, also. The U.P. I’m a Yooper. I love pasties. I live in Wisconsin now and there are no pasty shops anywhere. You might be able to find a frozen brand in the grocery store but it’s not the same. I’m craving a pasty now. They are good with ketchup but I like mine with gravy. I wish I had a nice hot pasty right now!

You lost me when stating "Like All Students And School People Eat Those". Yes they are relatively cheap and they are savory. In our Uni we've got a couple of thousand students, this snack is only moderately popular. Maybe at high schools when a quick snack is in demand, then again there are quite a few tasty and cheap alternatives to this specific snack.

It's rice vermicelli in soup cooked with usually prawn-based stock, with a lot of spices and coconut milk. As you can see it's topped with shredded chicken, prawns, fried eggs, and coriander. Usually it comes with the side of belacan (shrimp paste) and kalamansi, which you can opt to squeeze into the soup to add some more tanginess.
