Scientists Discover The Unfortunate News That Face Shields Are Almost 100% Ineffective
Japan has put together a really good computer and, unlike most of us who finish our PC builds, they aren’t using it for games. Riken, a government-backed research center in Kobe conducted a study on the spread of coronavirus by using Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, and determined that nearly 100 percent of airborne droplets less than 5 micrometers in size escaped through plastic shields (one micrometer is one-millionth of a meter). Additionally, about half of the larger droplets measuring 50 micrometers found their way into the air.

Makoto Tsubokura, computational science team leader at Riken, said the simulation combined airflow with the reproduction of tens of thousands of droplets of different sizes, from under 1 micrometer to several hundred micrometers.
He warned against wearing plastic face shields as an alternative to masks.
“Judging from the results of the simulation, unfortunately, the effectiveness of face guards in preventing droplets from spreading from an infected person’s mouth is limited compared with masks,” Tsubokura told The Guardian.

“This is especially true for small droplets of less than 20 micrometers,” Tsubokura said, explaining that all of the much smaller aerosol particles were found to escape through the gap between the face and the face shield. “At the same time, it somehow works for the droplets larger than 50 micrometers.”
Fugaku, which cost over $1.2 billion and can perform more than 415 quadrillion computations a second, recently also found that face masks made from non-woven fabric are more effective at blocking the spread of COVID-19 via airborne droplets than those made of cotton and polyester
You can wear shields but use a mask as well

Here’s what people said after hearing the big news
They are meant to be worn with a face mask, the mask stops your droplets getting out and the covering stops other peoples droplets getting in.
EXACTLY! You wear a face mask for others and the visor for yourself. Wear both.

A face mask with expiration valve is ment to protect YOU against other people's droplets. If you use a face shield and/or a mask with expiration mask you are being an A*s#ole because you are spreding your germs and protecting yourself against other people's germs.
It's amazing how idiots manage to draw the wrong conclusions based on the results of a test."If face shields don't work, why are we wearing masks? " SMH. It was obvious to any THINKING person that face shields wouldn't stop the spreading. It's protecting against droplets. A face mask does contain the spreading that's why professionals wear them both. It seems that common sense is anything but common.
Well duh. You have nothing enclosing your mouth by wearing just a shield that is several inches away from your face. It's the difference between sneezing with your hand over your mouth or with your hand several inches away from it.
A face shield protects you from getting blood, mucus, etc., ON YOUR SKIN DIRECTLY. Viral particles get right behind the shield and up your nose. Also, a FACE SHIELD is not the same as a FACE MASK. Masks cover noses and mouths, to prevent viral material from shedding form the wearer and to limit inhalation of viral material by the wearer. A face shield is about as effective as swim goggles against Covid-19. We knew this in March 2020.
If you can't wear a mask, you're supposed to be staying home for the sake of others and yourself. Don't be a piece of dogshit and use these as an excuse for not wearing a mask, because it's a short hop and skip to "I can't wear a mask, so I'm not wearing one".
Wow who have thought that plastic infront of your face will not stop a virus from getting in! Masks are for a reason people.
I'm no scientist but I discovered this by looking at them being worn.
Just wear a face mask, keep social distance and do not 'spread' small surveys. Be smart.
I've always wondered whether they act as a funnel for the wearer, making the situation worse in regard to their protection by guiding infectious agents towards their nose and mouth, rather than away.
Graham Blease definitely wins the idiot price. And Deb Standeven is a runner up. "those of us that cant wear a mask"...who would that be? If you do not have heaviest respiratory deficies, you can wear a mask...if you do have them, better avoid the public right now...

Masks are ineffective too... But hey they say we hafta wear them. But let's just keep exchanging money in stores. Let's keep flicking to grocery stores and touch everything in sight. Sounds so safe.
Surely for those of us who can’t wear masks, the shield offer more protection than nothing... Said the person who doesn’t understand what 100% ineffective means. And this disease isn’t spread through droplets. It’s aerosolized.
Yes, so terrible of BP... let's not hurt the Orange Goblin's feelings. Especially given he's such an honest and nice man of high integrity who never insults anyone himself.
