Everyone’s dream is to have their own house or apartment one day. It’s just different when the property belongs to you as you can make sure it is in good condition and is not dangerous to live in. Most of you probably have experience with renting, whether it was a long-term home or a temporary stay and in some cases might have noticed that the landlords don’t care about the rented property as much as they would if they lived there themselves.

There are landlords who actually don’t care at all and have no sympathy for those who have to live in horrible conditions. And when nobody helps them, they go online to vent about what they are going through, so Bored Panda compiled some of the terrible stories that people shared.

(guessing this is the UK) a section21 is a way of a landlord reclaiming the house for usually reasons of selling but they could just be saying that. We got given one during lockdown so we had 6 months to move out despite never putting a foot wrong.

I was evicted for refusing to give my apartment manager my legally prescribed Vicodin. She knew I got it because I'm an idiot and told her when I had to go pick up the delivery. She told the owners I was cooking meth and had gotten another dog. She got away with it, I was too poor to afford legal representation.

Where is it legal for home owners to have keys to your apartment? I live in Greece and it's common to change your lock as soon as you rent an apartment.

I always change the locks when I move into a new place. I don't care. If the owner needs to get in, they can do it on my terms, not theirs. I've never gotten in trouble for it either. I change the locks back after I leave

Landlords don’t have a good reputation. Of course, there are caring landlords who fix the problems tenants have immediately and even are decent people that you can have a cup of afternoon tea with.

But these kinds of landlords aren’t talked too much about because they are just normal and how they are supposed to be. What people do talk a lot about are the landlords that come to check on their tenants unannounced, who don’t fix mold growing on walls and who increase rent months into the contract.

That's probably sewage backing up into the tub. That's a dangerous situation that the landlord has to address asap. If a landlord repeatedly ignores requests for a repair, document all communication with them to take it to the housing authority. Make requests to the landlord by text or email so that you can document them, then you have proof of unsafe conditions. Depending on where you live you can withhold rent, just be sure it's legally ok to do so. (Check your local info) A landlord has a duty to provide a safe place to live.

I had damp in my old apartment. I kept cleaning it, so then the landlord wouldn't believe there was an issue. I had to let it get in a pretty grim way for him to finally listen. Granted it wasn't as mushroomy as this, but i still had to let the mould grow to prove a point.

Bored Panda got in contact with Dan Wilson Craw, the Deputy Director of Generation Rent, an organisation that is "fighting to stop renters being unfairly evicted from their homes" and who is "fighting for renters to live in safe, decent homes that they can afford." They are the team behind the hashtag #VentYourRent" which is a movement towards change.

We asked why some landlords seem to not care about the people who live in their properties that might be even dangerous. Dan Wilson Craw didn't have a certain answer, "It is hard to know how slum landlords sleep at night, but the rental market attracts unsavoury characters who know that they can make a lot of money from desperate people who will accept very poor housing that rarely gets inspected. If a tenant complains it is easy to force them out with a rent increase or a no-fault eviction, and replace them with someone else who is desperate for a roof over their head."

I'm pretty sure that no matter what country you are in, you call the local housing authority to report substandard living conditions and you cannot be expected to pay full rent. In fact, I think the landlord may even be responsible for accommodating you somewhere else until the problem is fixed.

In a perfect world. Unfortunately, at least in the U. S. where I live, the housing authorities are understaffed and there are just too many people needing their help. Greedy landlords can get away with all kinds of nonsense because they have money and know the right people. Property gets run down and they don't care because there is no incentive to do the decent thing and fix these problems. They live in their nice homes and look down on their tenants for being poor. I've had a lot of experience with slumlords.

People who shared their experiences online had their ceiling collapse even though they warned their landlords that it would if nothing was fixed. Some people were constantly visited by their landlords without calling first, and others had to deal with literal mushrooms growing from cracks.

These issues should be fixed by the landlord even if they aren’t legally required to as it’s their property and it would be unfair to put that burden on the tenant because they won’t live there forever. Plus, tenants often pay ridiculous prices for being able to live there so it is reasonable to expect that money to be used to make their homes livable.

That mold will make you sick. Even if it's behind tiling. Many people assume that tiles and grout is what makes it watertight, but that's not true. You need a watertight seal behind it to protect the wall from water entering through the grout. Especially if it's some sort of wooden construction. Terribly done. Remove the tile and kill the mold on the surface with bleach.

Send pictures to landlord electronically and hard copies delivered that have to be signed for. You’ll have proof that you informed them that there’s an infestation problem. If they don’t respond, reporters/ tv stations might love a good rat infestation story…especially with disgusting pictures. You might have to move, but that wouldn’t be a bad thing, anyway.

The Deputy Director explained what are the legal requirements for landlords in the UK, "Landlords have to keep properties in a safe condition and must also ensure the property has an Energy Performance Certificate, an annual gas safety certificate and in some cases a licence. When a tenancy starts, the landlord must protect the tenant’s deposit, and provide a How To Rent guide. If any of these things are missing the landlord cannot evict the tenant without providing a reason – though if your home is unsafe you need the council to serve an improvement notice to protect you. Although landlords ordinarily don’t need a reason to evict tenants, they must still follow a legal process. If landlords fail to license their properties, ignore an improvement notice or evict a tenant illegally, the tenant can claim back rent."

Landlords are paid for just owning a property by a person who doesn’t have it. That means they have power over them and because their tenant needs a place to live, they can dictate the rules.

Their main objective is to earn money because landlords may not even have a job and rely on income from their renters. They put the least amount of money into the house after it has been rented to someone so that they can earn more.

Our interviewee agrees that "Ultimately a lot of the rights that tenants have to a safe home are undermined by the sheer power imbalance in the rental market, where landlords can bully tenants into silence with the threat of a Section 21 notice or an unaffordable rent increase, and the housing shortage means few tenants can simply move somewhere better."

We wondered if there is anything that people should take notice when signing a contract to avoid getting into such homes that are falling apart and the landlord is indifferent to those issues, but turns out, there is not much help from that "Tenancy agreements will rarely include information that will help tenants avoid getting ripped off, or show tenants where to look to understand their rights."

I thought I had mice at my old apartment. It turns out it was just a mouse a little baby causing all this damage luckily I was able to back it into a pantry and catch it with a pasta strainer once I released it I never had a problem again for 7 years till I moved out. Well not with mice.

You wrote this in the past tense, so you may not be in the situation anymore, but it might benefit folks to install video equipment in cases like this. It’s an accurate documentation of what’s happening, and it can be used in a legal capacity, if necessary.

It took a couple of bad landlords for me to educate myself on my rights (everyone who rents should do this btw). Want to throw your landlord for a loop? ask where your deposit is being held and when you are going to get your accrued interest

Landlords like this should be given a "three strikes" ruling and then forbidden from owning any rental properties ever again.

    View more comments

Those nasty landlords are usually not business people who are used to meeting their clients' needs and compromising because at the end of the day, a landlord and a tenant have a business relationship as the former provides a service and the latter buys that service.

Those numbers they see in cash or in their bank accounts may make them even more greedy and forget to budget for maintenance, repairs and other expenses that come with owning a property.

I found some at a hotel once. Luckily I had read how you should always pull back the fitted sheets and check the creases of the mattress as soon as you get in. We were in the room all of 10 minutes before showing the manager the bugs and getting a new room. He was really good and called it in immediately to upper management. A friend of mine once told me that in America at least, never stay at a hotel with a yellow sign - and darned if he wasn't right! This one had bedbugs, but at a different hotel with a yellow sign we found black mold all over one wall!

It’s good protocol to put/keep your suitcase(s) in the tub until you’ve determined what your room/bed bug situation. In 1988, I checked into a hole-in-the-wall place in Singapore (back before they cleaned up the place) and woke up to find my bed, my sheets, my person crawling with hundreds and hundreds of bedbugs. I screamed, but stayed put until dawn because I had no idea of what might befall me if I just hung around outside somewhere at 5:30 am. After that, everything I did was an improvement on my opening salvo.

You got kicked out (it didn’t seem good at the time, but you know it is). Well, social media is a for real thing, and that sh*t: city, state, address, slumlord’s name, and especially PICTURES, would be on TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and any other platform I could reach. It’s not slander or libel if it’s true, and you have the proof. Sometimes you have to put folks on blast for stuff to change.

My college dorm apartment grew black mold on the entire interior wall next to my bed. When I complained and asked if I could move - with a doctor’s note saying that it had made me quite ill (I’d become so sick that semester that I had to get special permission from my professors to not physically show up to class, but work from home) the college refused, but agreed to clean and repaint the wall. Within 2 months it had grown back. 😬

Indeed. Just go to the nearest supermarket, buy a 10-pack for 1 euro and leave the nine you don’t use for the next renters to enjoy.

Really? That's your complaint? I mean it's hilarious that they gave you a dirty one back, but these are like toothpaste and soap and toilet paper. You can replace those by doing this thing we call "grocery shopping". They're in aisle six, next to the paper towels.

I'm puzzled by these people complaining about airbnb issues. There are rules. There are guidelines. You can be reported, taken off the Airbnb list if you are a jerk about the area you're renting on airbnb. I really don't go thru life looking for things or people to sue or get Medieval on but why do all these posters put up with situations that legally they don't have to? This includes these Landlord horror stories.

That’s literally 💯 against the law. We HAVE to provide heat ( unless maybe you live in Key West)…we just don’t have to provide a/c. I can’t understand why he stayed a year. This would have been grounds for terminating the lease because the LANDLORD breached it! Pro tip from landlady: you still have to go through proper channels so you don’t get screwed. Make repair requests IN WRITING! Document! And then don’t hold back rent, keep paying, go straight to court. 🤷🏻‍♀️ As a landlady, I hate a-hole landlords.

In Germany you just stop paying percentages of your rent (how many % is defined by previous verdicts). Landlords tend to repair stuff quite fast if you start that.

If this is a property with locking rooms for different tenants, then it is classed as a HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) and there are a whole raft of additional rules that need to be complied with, especially around fire safety. The door may or may not be compliant, but it will have to have adequate smoke alarms etc.

Right? I'm in the US and my sister rented a room near the U of WA. The guy bought a 4 bedroom house and just chopped the crap out of it to accommodate 16! people. Bedrooms were not only cut in half, they were quartered. She basically had 125 sf of living space. It was NOT an AirB&B , but rental student housing - And NOTHING was up to code. When she moved out (I certainly didn't want to upset her living arrangements) I called the authorities. Turned out, this was only 1 of about 5 homes he'd done the same to so he could use them for "student housing". He was jailed (intentional personal endangerment, I think - along with other charges referring to construction without proper licenses, etc.) and fines so much he was forced to sell all the houses. Yeah - don't mess with mine.

I’m telling you, The Health Department really loves stuff like this. It can even be reported anonymously. Or have the conversation again, this time with your phone recording your landlord while showing them pictures. It’s not illegal because you’re not recording without their knowledge. See what the response is then. Go for it.

We had a problem like this in my last apartment. Every time we'd take a bath, the girl downstairs would have water coming down her ceiling. My landlord kept calling me and asking if we were "splashing around" or leaving my son unattended (the answer was no on both counts). This went on for months until finally he decided to come check it out. Turned out the idiot who was supposed to install the little piece of foam/insulation behind the bathtub overflow drain hadn't done it correctly and it was just wedged in there sideways, leaving all this space for water to leak out from the drain and under the tub/onto the floor and eventually down to her ceiling. Of course we never got an apology for all those assumptions that we were in there just sloshing water around for the hell of it 🙄

How every landlords name in London is Patel?

    Troux

Nominative determinism. From Wikipedia: "The term patel derives from the word Patidar, literally "one who holds (owned) pieces of land called patis", implying a higher economic status than that of the landless, ultimately from Sanskrit paṭṭakīla, with the ending -dar (from Sanskrit "धार" - supporting, containing, holding) denoting ownership."

While it seems ridiculous to ask for $0.11, that can add up for a landlord. If everyone paid $0.11 less or $0.60 less or even $1.27 less than their rent, depending on how many tenants there are, and how many months this happens, that could be a lot of money over time. If it's the only time this tenant has done this this, then the landlord should let it go. But the tenant should also make sure to pay the right amount. I can see both sides.

If a Landlord owns 10 properties, each at 3000 a month- and every single tenant under-paid by 0.11 every single month, over the course of a year the Landlord would lose £13.20... FROM A TOTAL INCOME OF £360,000. Poor chap will have to make do with only £359,986.80 annual income instead. How could anyone live off that??? I mean, it's only just over twice what our Prime Minister earns...

We lived in Colorado where it gets very cold in the winter. The heat was not working, so we called the landlord. He arranged with a company to come over to fix the furnace. When that company called me to set up an appointment, I was informed that the landlord told them that we, the tenants, would be paying for the repair.

Rental rate OK? Tenant requests taken care of when asked? I’m not a fan of arsenate landlords either, but this has ZERO impact on the tenant’s life. They are legally her landlord, and can charge whatever they like. It’s their source of income. 🤷🏽‍♀️

My rent for a small studio was about the same as my mortgage for a flat almost 3x the size. Renters are almost always paying "too much" when you compare it like that. However, there is a second side to it. We just moved to a bigger house and I was wondering if it's worth keeping the flat as an investment to rent it out. It turns out that after all the additional costs, I would only make 150-200 euros profit per month with the current rents. Not enough money to justify all the headache and I would literally go broke if someone decides to not pay rent for a few months. We sold our flat and just keep what we live in.

It's a incredibly sad lampshade though. For me, when you look around and see how people have let things like that go, you wonder what else is overlooked as well. It could be worse but for $300 a night, I'd be a little disappointed with the decor to say the least. I'd definitely be inspecting the sheets and mattress to make sure they are clean and free from unwanted pests.
