It's not a simple yes or no. X is a sewer now but social media played big part in overthrowing corrupt governments in Arab Spring. It's helped people organise at grass roots and connects people who need support.

Grass roots organization existed before the internet. We took down dictators in Latin America in the 70s and 80s.

Personally it has been a great benefit but I came to it late and am old enough to not need 'likes' as validation, I'm simply there to amuse and be amused by my friends (nearly all of whom I know in the real world). Occasionally ask for advice and opinions - as when I recently change internet provider. It is my primary form of contact with people as I no longer leave the house. The flip-side of it all is the very evident ugliness of those that want nothing more than to spread discord and hate, falsehoods and conspiracy theories. Overall, it causes more problems than is solves I think.

I personally enjoy pineapple on pizza, though only with some ham to accompany it. The saltiness of the ham and sweetness of the pineapple go well together, for my taste buds. If it's not your thing, I understand and respect your choices. It's personal preference at the end of the day.

Being good at school definitely means you're some kind of smart, especially if you don't have to work for it. The kind of smart that makes it easy for you to get information from written language or manipulate numbers does exist, and it's very helpful in life. But if you don't have any of the other kinds - social, creative, musical, practical - you're still handicapped.

The way I see it, intelligence and wisdom are not the always the same thing. You can be a straight A student, but you might not have any life skills, or common sense. Being book smart, or good at school, doesn't mean you'll always make the best choices in your day to day life.

Depends on what you mean by "good at" and what school you're talking about. Most kids OUGHT to be able to get high marks in grade-level courses, but (1) there should be offerings for exceptionally gifted students to excel at; (2) struggling with normal courses doesn't mean one is exceptionally unintelligent

One of the big mistakes bosses make is that they assume everyone cares as much about their company as they do. When one has been made redundant or transferred a few times, or the company name changes due to mergers, one realises that the company is not committed to you, so it's hard to reciprocate.

I'd bet most people who say that couldn't sit through a 1980s TV show. People slam The Big Bang Theory for having had a laugh track, jokey dialog and unhealthy social interactions; compare to the constant, hatefilled putdowns of Rose (Betty White) by Dorothy in The Golden Girls, or the Dad's random quirk of the week on Family Ties, or the downright dehumanized absurdity of Jaleel White's nerd in Family Matters. And you used to have to go to a movie to see the sort of production value in a typical evening drama.

I think this is much like the "music these days sucks, it was much better it the 70's/80's/90's" argument; you remember the good stuff and forget how much utter trash has always been produced. That said I am often annoyed at the 6-10 episode seasons for streaming shows.

Depends on the shows or medium you are watching. As a fan of anime, I think anime is still really good, regardless if it is streamed, or airing regularly on TV. And I can catch up on older shows I might have missed. And some Korean and Japanese shows are still good, and I can watch them whenever. But most of the big shows on TV, like in terms of live action, there's probably only one or two I'll even consider watching at once out of the dozens that do air.

I used to consider TV shows to be a waste of time. I would occasionally watch crime shows with my family but that was about it. Most shows had like 20 new episodes every year with no continuity whatsoever (everything is reset after each episode, the characters have no arcs, plot is episodic...). In the last couple of years I finally started watching TV shows. The characters actually have arcs, the show actually tells a story and there is a lot less filler. Sure, I sometimes have to wait 3 years for 7-10 episodes, but it's usually well worth the wait. I don't understand why people are nostalgic for old TV shows. Sure there are some good ones but a lot of them are generic crime mistery shows and cringy sitcoms with tons of forced laughter.

No....they don't demonize it enough. Since sugar, and HFCS have been added to the MAJORITY of food that americans buy and consume with increasing prevalence over the past 60 years, the rate of type 2 diabetes in the american population has increased 95x (accounting for population) while the actual number of people inflicted has increased over 200x. The number of people who are overweight has more than doubled, the obesity rate has nearly QUADRUPLED. This isn't normal, it's not healthy and it's all due to the rise of fast and processed food being packed full of SUGAR

Excess of any food turns into fat. Anything that you eat that contains calories can contribute to weight gain if your calorie intake exceeds your calorie expenditure. However simple carbohydrates like sugars, such as Glucose, Fructose, Lactose and Sucrose are more easily broken down by the body and converted into adipose tissue. Simple carbohydrates are a necessary part of our diet, especially if you live a very active lifestyle as they are easily and quickly converted into the energy needed to fuel our bodies. Like everything though, too much of something can be harmful.

You actually need sugar. Too much sugar is bad for you. Your body doesn't make a difference between sugar from candy and sugar from fruit. Try to get sugar from fruit instead of candy for the most part and you'll be fine.

Sorry, but that is a complete myth. All sugars are a simple carbohydrate, it doesn't matter whether it is Glucose and Sucrose from sweets or Fructose from fruit, your body still processes them exactly the same. The difference is in the amount of sugar rather than the type. Confectionary contains much more sugar per gram than fruit does.

Not ableist, I think you're missing the point. It's suggesting that for some people, if you play an audiobook you're likely to be not really paying full attention all the time, to have not really gained as full an understanding as it you read the words. I think it's likely, but I've never actually listened to an audiobook for comparison, so I don't know.

At the end of the day, you're consuming the contents of the book one way or another. Be it physically reading them with an actual book, or listening to them via an audio book. If we go by pure definitions, then yes, you technically didn't "read" a book with an audio book, but the contents were still consumed.

This is correct on technicality. Reading a book is a means of taking in the story, but NOT exclusively the only way. If the audiobook is complete and faithful, it is equivalent to reading for people able to pay attention. Reading comprehension is not a given either, so for some the audiobook is better for understanding.

I don’t use audiobooks, but as long as you’re concentrating on it and it isn’t background noise, of course they’re books! Those who scoff at audiobooks forget that throughout human history, told and retold stories have been considered far more valuable as stories than those just written down

I read very fast, which can be a bad thing sometimes. In wanting to get to the exciting part, sometimes I can miss a little of the atmospheric nuance. Listening to audiobooks has taught me to slow down a bit and savor a story more...plus, there's something so soothing about being read to, as if I were a child at bedtime.

Washington DC has plenty of roundabouts, but they put traffic lights at each intersection within the roundabout! The result is a f*****g nightmare. And it's too bad because where there ISN'T a roundabout, you've got decent grids that the synchronized lights SHOULD allow you to flow through pretty smoothly, but all the angled roads with their off-synch lights grind everything to a halt.

Individually, I find that an avocado doesn't really have that much taste. As guacamole, it's tastes awesome, and the spices/seasonings can help bring out the flavour better.

I am not going to vote 100% but also I don't think it is blasphemy either. I prefer the books over the movies. I read the books long before they became popular and the movies came out. Same with The Hobbit. I know there are people out there that seen the movies and some read the books after and prefer the movies. So please don't vote me down.

These questions are so vague and general - to put it delicately. What do you mean by "superior"? A lot of people are comfortable reading e-books, because they can adjust font & luminosity, while paper books have small, almost illegible writing. Others (who don't have vision issues) love the smell and touch of paper books. Actually, it's great that we have options.

It depends on the book. Many cheap, self-published ebooks from sites like Smashwords, are often poorly written and edited and full of mistakes. Ebooks from proper publishing houses that are just an electronic form of published paperback and hardbacks are usually just as good as their physical version. I have 1000's of books on my Kindle, far more than I have room for in my house and whilst I love reading a physical book, I love the portability of ebooks, plus the fact that when I get into a really good series, I can just download the next book straightaway.

Not much of a reader these days. I haven't used an E-Book myself, so I can't make the comparison. But I'd probably figure that they'd have advantages, including taking up less physical space, or being able to zoom in. Maybe the feel of reading an E-Book is different to reading a physical book, but it's been a while since I read one.

Not always. AI is learning to be inspired by other art. Sometimes new stuff is created. As an artist I find it fascinating. Some of it I quite like. Other is junk.

When you know it is AI all the meaning is taken out of it. Even a simple picture of a rose makes you wonder what another human being saw in that rose, the feelings that made them choose that one, what beauty they saw in that moment

Why is this even a question? It's not art, full stop. It's ugly, plagiarised slop.

AI is not art, plain and simple. It's the bàstàrdizàtion of art, has no soul/passions, and it's glorifying plagiarism.

Who ever thought it was? Presumably they've never seen cricket, kabaddi or other sports around the world. At best it should be "in the USA because no-one else plays it".

At one point it might have been more cerebral than now for the players. Now all the plays are communicated from 10 coaches electronically. The players are skilled in executing what they’ve been told, but they’ve taken most decisions out the players’ hands.

Mathmatically illogical is what it is. If the game clock is 60 min then why do games last more than 3 and a half hours? Also the points system. And the rules in general. I could go on about the complete lack of ethics throught the sport as well but i like.to.focus on the mathmatic inconsistancies.

Because not all of that three and a half hours is spent with the ball in play. Time outs (network and actual), half-time, and stopping the clock to allow players to return to the line of scrimmage use up a lot of the difference. But is some of it wasteful or being abused? Oh, yes. College basketball is even worse.

Baseball is. And not just because outfielders have time to contemplate philosophy. Pitchers are constantly trying to exploit fluid dynamics to make the ball's flightpath magically bend in the air while batters try to guess what to expect from these sorcerers. Meanwhile managers hire Wall Street analysts to figure out in which order to send batters to the plate.
