“Every man is the creature of the age in which he lives; very few are able to raise themselves above the ideas of the time,” wrote Voltaire.

Many institutions, attitudes, actions, etc. that people of previous generations found perfectly acceptable are frowned on today. Racism, child labor, blood sports - all of these are generally unacceptable today. So I asked the Bored Panda community to share their thoughts on what they think will be impermissible 100 years in the future. Here are all the answers!

School trip to look at wind turbines the other day. In response to one question, the guide tried to explain people had objected to them in the early days - some for valid reasons, but most because they were ugly. (turbines, not the objectors). Kids (11/12 yr olds) turned to the teachers all mad saying that didn't happen. No one ever objected to trying to save the planet for stupid reasons like that. I just stare at the floor, saying 'he is right, that was a thing'. I couldn't look them in the eye.

What people don't get is that it will take us about a hundred years to switch over from oil and gas unless a REAL new energy is discovered that can effectively power the world. Right now a machine has to move 500 tonnes of earth to make one lithium battery for a car, and that machine is powered by diesel. Think about that...

Yes. There was a debate recently in ask anteopologists in reddit about FGM. Many said that its a complicated issue because its part of their culture and so. No. Mutilating children is never ok no matter what culture does it. Mine tortures bulls for fun, its traditional; its still wrong and should disappear.

We kind of all do. I get what you are trying to say, but I think the OP means things like forced marrage of 8 year old girls to old men - not dictating how to dress which doesn't hurt anyone. (i can accept the cultural norm of arranged marrage for people over 21, if not forced and they can get out of it but little girls? I think we get to decide that is bad)

YES! There are many countries that are Patriarchal or ruled by extremist beliefs or both. Sadly, despite efforts of a vocal few very little actually changes. Female genital mutilation, arranged marriages, females not being educated, considered ‘property,’ of the husband, being murdered for so called ‘honour killings,’ doused with acid for rejecting unwanted suitors…. It’s crazy! I personally know woman from Arabia, Iran, India, South America. Even in ‘First World,’ countries, domestic violence, spousal murder STILL are an issue. Likely it will be a few hundred years before this changes although I think likely much sooner considering humanity’s hellbent path towards destroying the world because of greed.

One of my classes is a discussion class about various issues - health, social, etc.. There is a particular practice that continues to this day that is basically seen as not acceptable throughout the rest of the world. The main argument that they come up with in favour of this activity is "it's part of our country's tradition". Ultimately, my goal is to foster their English skills, not teach them right from wrong, but I do tell them that, for me, "tradition" is not a valid argument. There are many countries throughout the world that had barbaric traditions in the past, and they are no longer practiced because they were, well, barbaric. I ask them why this particular tradition is good for their country, and why is it important to keep the tradition alive. At the very least, it makes them think more deeply about the topic, as opposed to giving the automatic "tradition" response.

Religion, in the U.S., is one of the most steadfast buckets of political ammunition to draw from. Children only offer political ammunition in the form of abortion rights and, because of this, are only politically valuable at the major election points. Care of religion will always trump care of the children.

Don't even get me started...when I was a kid in the 70's, some neighbor kids go ahold of a gun. One accidentally shot the other and the parents who were JW let their child die because their religion doesn't allow blood transfusions. It would've saved his life. He was only 7 years old.

Families who use religion to justify not vaccinating their children or denying their children needed medical attention should be flagged for abuse. I had an acquaintance is secondary school who parents were radically religious and refused medical care that was prayer. This young girl ended up taking her own life because she was in such pain for not being able to receive life changing surgery.

How about religious exemption period? Some like to talk about that "slippery slope." Allowing organizations to opt-out of things like coverage for birth control because of religion. What if you worked for a company of Fundamentalist Christians who don't believe in medical intervention of any kind? Should that mean they don't have to offer health insurance? It's one thing (maybe) if you work for a religious non-profit institution; but for-profit businesses?

In the US, employers with 50 or more employees can be fined under the Affordable Care Act if they don't offer health insurance to their employees, but there's no law stating that any employer must offer health insurance. If a company doesn't want to offer insurance to their employees, they don't have to.

Sea World is a marine life tourist attraction in the United States. Many of their marine animals used to be kept in extremely tiny tanks that were not suitable for their size. Furthermore, many the marine animals were/still are also forced to perform for guests and were clearly agitated. All of this was compounded when a young trainers who killed by one of the orca whales that she was training. The orca was agitated and depressed for being in captivity and many conservationists/marine biologists had warned Sea World about this. Sea World became one of the main focuses of the documentary "Black Fish" which examines marine animal abuse and captivity.

I really hope so. I'm not religious but a friend of mine and I were talking about how if there is a hell, I don't think we're going there for how we treat each other, but for how we treat animals. I look at a dog who wants nothing more than to love you. That's it. And some jerk beats and starves it and it's abused so badly they have to euthanize it because there's no hope for recovery. I just don't understand how anyone can do that. But... I eat some meats. Not a lot but I do occasionally have a burger. So is that hypocrisy? I don't know. I feel just instinctually that these are different things. I'm all for ethically treatment of the animals who are our food sources but being truly ethical would mean not being able to keep up with demand. Ans what about medical testing? I've certainly benefited from the advances that have been made with animal testing. I really hate myself for it. I just feel like we should at least START with purposeful and degrading animal abuse.

Doctors/teachers should make millions. It should be super competitive to get into those fields and only the best can make it to justify their pay. This way we guarantee our kids are actually learning and aren't using outdated books and info. Some teachers being hired were C- students and barely understand their own specialty nevermind not able to teach it to people. There are science teachers being told they aren't allowed to teach because the administrators are banning books that go against their religious beliefs. It's crazy. It should be 100% taxpayer funded. There are plenty of useless and bloated programs we can cut to pay for this. All these people talking about how unfair it is to see athletes and entertainers making the money they make...it's our own faults. They wouldn't make so much if people didn't watch. They make huge amounts in advertising revenue and it brings in viewers. Same for Kardashians/influencers. I'm not mad at the influencers for cashing in; I'm mad at the viewers making them richer.

I think the media industry in general is going to change. With so many people using apps and pirating, I feel like the era of the 'movie star' is just about over. Already we're seeing it fade. I can't name a single current younger actor who is on par with Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep or Angelina Jolie... even if you think of older actors like Laurence Olivier, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Katheryn Hepburn, etc, the "movie star" worship is fading because our ability to know the celebrities because of social media and having access to celebs in a way we never have before. They're more human and therefore we worship them less. And also because the studios can't afford the same type of movies- and paychecks- since less people are going to theaters less.

Victim blaming goes a lot further than just sexual assault. It's pervasive in the law enforcement agencies. I was Victim blamed for swerving around a jaywalking pedestrian who verbally berated me while I was stuck at a stop. The cop said "well don't yell at people" and NEVER filed a report. I turned him in, and the chief of police called me to discuss my complaint, and gave me a Filing Number.

YUP I do my best in the afternoon/evening. I swear the day ends at 5:00 right as I’m at my most alert and productive. My first 3 hours of the day are a slog. I swear if I could work 11:00-7:00 I’d be much, much more productive - but for some reason everything is “the earlier the better! Rise and shine! You’re lazy if you sleep in past 5am!” 🙄 (edit: I work in an office btw)

Hanging out in the break room or shooting the breeze at a coworkers cubicle is acceptable but starting a load of laundry or running to the grocery store while on the clock working at home is frowned upon.

Housework and chores in the morning. Sit down about 11am and I spit out a minimum of 5,000 words in the next 6 hours. If I try to write first thing in the morning,, 3,500 at best.

in 2010 I told my coworkers that the full time job is dead. Businesses, as much as possible, will hire 2 or 3 part timers rather than hire 1 full timer. More economical for them on benefits alone and give them a bigger work force. Sure enough, within a few years that very business was only hiring full timers for management positions and even had part time managers. This will become more widespread in the future. Higher paying positions will only be filled with high quality workers that can out perform 2 or 3 part timers, in most cases these will be older people.

I loved working from home. (I'm retired now). I was a professional bookkeeper and went into the office every Monday, basically just to write checks. It took me 3 buses, 1 trolley & about 2.5 hours to get there because we only had 1 car. Never again.

Who gets to work only 9-5? it's 8-5 or 9-6 for me. Plus Dallas traffic, which tags on another hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. So...7-6 or longer for me. It stinks.

Yeah. This is silly. And I honestly don't get how the more hrs = more productive mindset can be alive today. I usually work 7-16 but when I do 7-17 to "catch up on hrs" that includes me pretty much staring at the wall for quite some time.(I honestly do this with 7-16 too or need to at least stretch a bit quite often). I think I could easily produce the same amount of work with better quality in less hrs. Or if I was allowed to go and take a 30min run/work out in the middle of the day. We need to start thinking outside the box in regards to work environment and productivity.

Smoking is a personal preference which doesn't harm anyone except the person smoking. (Provided said smoker does so in designated areas in order to prevent unintentional second hand smoke.) That being said, my father died of lung cancer. When he was diagnosed, he told the doctor.."Well, smoke 2 packs a day for 55 years, and there are bound to be consequences." He accepted responsibility for his decision to smoke. But if a person chooses to smoke, and does it responsibly so no one else is immediately affected, that's no one's business but their own. Dictating a person's decision of what they can or cannot put into their own bodies is a bit totalitarian. And a violation of a basic human right.

In rich nations, perhaps. Smoking in the US has been reduced by allowing big tobacco to addict millions of people elsewhere, particularly in Southeast Asia, where cigarettes are routinely sold to children on playgrounds. The governments involved have fewer resources than the corporations killing their citizens, and pleas to the US Congress to control our monsters fall on deaf ears.

I've called smoking "suicide with the world's slowest bullet". I'm suicidal, but I can't commit suicide because people tend to take that very personally. If I die from a heart attack or lung cancer, they'll say I was stupid, but they won't take it quite so personally. That said: I quit smoking about six weeks ago after 30 years of smoking.

While smoking is, undoubtledly, stupid ... wasting money to increase your chance of serious diseases of various kinds, reducing phyiscal performance you're able to ... of course, that is even dumb among drug usage which itself, usually, isn't the smartest of choices. But, OTOH, the freedom to do so shall not be limited just because it's dumb. Before we start limiting self harm of adult people knowing very well what they are doing, and doing it to themselves, the harm done towards the helpless - animals, children, ... - needs to be adressed. This is just ... well, decide for yourself, nobody can take your share of damage from you anyway, in case you do smoke, and if you don't act careless or evil, the damage is limited to your body and your purse, and these, you shall be free to destroy by any means you enjoy and/or see fit.

I always remember how hopeful we were when the Sex Discrimination Act came in. We predicted that women's pay would come up to meet men's pay and thus would make sure that there was more choice over who brought up children. The opposite has happened, employers took advantage and governments looked away when men's pay came DOWN to meet women's and now BOTH parents MUST work to raise a family. Abuse of the legislation has resulted in MORE inequity..

Or just generally schools using punishment for emotional issues at all. Consequences have their place but rewarding positive behaviour works a lot better. We don't teach our kids to negotiate properly either from an authority/ education perspective so the can also ask questions and understand why we are asking for specific behaviour to change, so they can't then do their own thinking and problem solving as well as self risk management (I work with young people in the criminal justice system and the stories I could tell you.. 🙃

This could be changed right now, but a lot of times parents are causing this to happen. They throw a tantrum about their kids being punished, even though they are at fault. If another child fights back, they throw a tantrum about their child being hurt in some way and involve school administrators. The parent’s attitudes need to change too.

“What Is Acceptable Today That You Think Won’t Be Acceptable 100 Years From Now?”: 35 Predictions Shared By Our Community I really hope it doesn't take anywhere close to 100 years! Wasting precious Helium on stupid inflatable single-use balloons or to make your voice higher. We have a limited supply on Earth that is rapidly running out and once it's gone, it's gone. The only other source is literally the Sun and it's not like we can mine that! And when it goes you can kiss goodbye to MRI machines (which use liquid Helium to work) and our ability to look inside your bodies and diagnose medical problems and save lives without requiring dangerous, time-consuming and often life-limiting or life-threatening invasive exploratory surgeries.

It isn't exactly 'finite' but it is limited. New helium is produced continuously through radioactive decay of natural isotopes in the earth's crust. Alpha particle radiation is literally the nucleus of a Helium atom. Once it picks up a pair of electrons from the environment it becomes neutral Helium.

“What Is Acceptable Today That You Think Won’t Be Acceptable 100 Years From Now?”: 35 Predictions Shared By Our Community Mass treating mentally ill patients (especially schizophrenia) with dumbing-down medication so they just suffer in silence and not bother "other people" with the "noisy symptoms". I'm a medical student and all antipsychotics have their place and indeed are lifesavers but in my opinion, they are over-used and not ideal for long-term therapy. They do not solve the root of the problem, they just make it temporarily more manageable -which is great but we should not leave behind the end goal. TL;DR: subduing problematic mentally ill patients with medication for decades instead of searching for / researching other options.

Nobody wants to quiet them or dumb them down, they want them to be as healthy and productive as they can be in life, and that means taking away or muting the voices that tell them to hurt themselves or how awful they are. Would you prefer people suffer from their disorder?

As a counselor maybe you should be open to the experiences of others to try to better your profession. As a disabled woman I can tell you that the three therapists I seeked were solely focused on my going back to work (be productive) and not talking about my feelings (not bothering others). This is the experience of most chronically ill people I have talked to.

Dear medical student, I totally agree to a point. I'm sure you mean well and I hope you take up this cause to go against the establishment. Everyone grieves with the parent that loses a child to disease or accident. Everyone grieves with the parent that has a child they care for that's in a wheelchair for a variety of reasons. But caring for a 33 year old paranoid schizophrenic son, who is abusive and terrorizes the neighborhood - you become a pariah. The Healthcare system doesn't support you because they're technically adults and in many ways your hands are tied as a parent. When they have violent episodes you can't call for help, for fear of watching you child get injured or shot by law enforcement. My beautiful, intelligent son has become a monster and I live in constant fear. While grieving the loss of my son, as he had been before, you are confronted with a daily living hell. My life as I knew it is gone. Replaced by an unliveable series screaming and destruction incidents. Help

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. We've got a next-door neighbor with what I believe to be similar issues. I'm sorry as hell he's suffering like that, but all empathy ends when he screams at ME (never my spouse), slams his window shut, accuses me of "mocking him through the walls", things like that. My hands are tied too, because literally nobody is doing anything to check him while my PTSD is taking me to mental places NOBODY involved wants me to go, and if he keeps harassing me and me alone, at some point there WILL be ugliness.

Dear medical student. I'm expecting that over time your opinion on antipsychotic medications will mature. Probably when you do your pshyc rotation. I have been a single mother of a son that suffers from Bipolar 1 with psychotic features along with Autism. He is very intelligent, bright and energetic now at age 21. Middle school years were plagued with suicide attempts, dangerous self harming such as burns and cuts he would put lemon juice on. He would become upset with me and was violent. Waking me up attacking me in my bed at night. I lived in terror for years. He saw many doctors and would be hospitalized at times. Nothing changed until he turned 18 and the doctors could start using out of a class of medication not allowed for children. It is easy for others to speak about the dangers of medication. There are those of us who's families survival depend on them.

The life saving benefit of antipsychotic medications for true schizophrenia can't be debated. I'm grateful and saddened to be able to say I've seen and witnessed the relief of symptoms these medications provide to people dealing with unimaginable symptoms. It sounds like many of you are coming from a professional point of view or a "worldly" one. As someone who has a mental illness and know many others who are afflicted I have to say many of us find the meds a life saver. I have had and have a great therapist and a great psychiatrist. If it wasn't for my meds and them working together I might not be here. I do not like the physical side effects of some meds but I can't control it. Part of the problem is that rather than deal with the systematic problems of abuse with long-term care of mentally ill people, they simply shut it all down. Mental health care is severely lacking; especially with the assembly line type medicine that most providers want to give. Many doctors seem to have the attitude of, "This one might require some effort? Then they'll l need to find another provider." Those "other" providers don't exist. I speak from personal experience in dealing with my son's mental health issues.

As the polarization of wealth in America accelerates, we will increasingly incarcerate the old, infirm, and incapable in pastel prisons for a thousand dollars a day, and abandon the millions who can't afford that to the streets, just as we currently do with the mentally ill.

Here here! I hope I live to see US catch up to the rest of the world, find our compassion to agree and help us achieve unity on this topic. It is frighteningly inhumane to me how many Americans do not believe that everyone deserves healthcare. The righteous hypocrisy on this basic topic just kills me.

"Medicine, food, housing, education being a luxury item" - how to tell you are from the U.S. without saying you are from the U.S.. Wwhile many countries struggle (and sometimes fail) to archieve and distribute them, they are seen als human rights nearly everywhere else. The US are the only country that in theory could grant those to everybody but won't, as this "would be communism".

Problem again here is the cost of the Ion test it takes to tailor meds. Insurance won't pay for it and unless something has changed, there's only 1 lab that can process that test. And once it's done, you're still stuck with big pharma that doesn't want you taking anything that will make you better. I had one med that worked and worked good. Wyeth Labs ceased production about 20 years ago. I still have some and it works better than anything made today. I called them and they refuse to make more claiming the generic is the same thing. No it's not. If it's the same, why is it I can take the whole bottle and I only get worse, but I can take one dose of the real stuff and see improvement overnight? No 2 meds are going to be the same, most of us are not as dumb as big pharma thinks we are.

TAMPONS-and indeed ALL menstrual products-being "luxury items", too! They are not covered by any (government?) medical plan. Even when you're given a card that will pay for other things, like vitamins, aspirin, and bandaids, it won't pay for tampons. (or midol, etc). That needs to end! I don't know about anyone else, but I have NEVER considered my period a luxury. And I can't stop it, short of medical intervention. Period products are an absolute NECESSITY, and should be treated as such. Also, I think ED (erectile dysfunction) treatments should be covered. Sexual health is just as important as physical or mental health-and, in fact, can affect both!

There is tons of empty commercial space that could be used - malls that have closed and could be centers, office buildings with no tenets ,etc. Some organizations just buy property to increase their holdings without a clear purpose for it (looking at you Scientology). I've worked with the homeless for years, and I can assure you that the people you refer to are a tiny percentage of the homeless community. This idea is often used to "explain" why it's not necessary to try to find housing for the homeless, but it's completely invalid.

Where I live there is a lot of very old military housing just sitting there, empty. I wish the government would restore that housing and use it as a place for homeless people with addictions to be rehabilitated and to get some help getting jobs. Maybe some homeless people could live there. I really do hope humanity at some point solves or at least cuts down the number of homeless people.

Unfortunately most people just don't understand homelessness, and just how hard it is to get out of it. Most people also believe in a lot of the negative stereotypes about the homeless, so they don't want to help.

I think this is already happening. All buildings in US being built must have handicapped access and multiple exits for safety. It's really just older buildings that were built before these requirements that still lag behind. But so many buildings are older so it's definitely frustrating. Even without the bulk of accessible living like roll in showers or wider doors, lower ovens and counters and ramps, I will never understand huge multi-floor buildings without elevators. I lived in NY for a long time and so many buildings don't have elevators. I mean 15-story buildings with no elevators--it's nuts to me. And they're still crazy expensive. It's not like you're paying that much less.

Teachers suffer from neurodivergent students though, if you ever taught you would realise this. My sister and her colleagues regularly are in the line of physical and mental trauma from autistic kids exploding and throwing things, and the teachers receive no support as these days the kids get all the support.Being ''neurodivergent '' these days gets you excused for all types of violence at school ( in Australia at least) and teachers have to sink or swim.

I have two sons on the spectrum, I also have two "typical" children, and honestly the current school system doesn't really work for any of them very well. School just teaches them how to pass a particular test. It's been a lot harder for the autistic kids, though since the school district cut almost all the para/ teachers aide jobs.

In the US, those test scores are what determines funding, for public schools. Better scores = more funding. So of course they're prioritized over everything else. This comes from way up high, and teachers really have no say in it. And kids aren't educated properly. They learn math and science, but no real life skills. They're pushed to their limit sometimes, and the ones who struggle are sometimes left behind. It's a shítty system, and it needs to change.

The worst is when you are gifted and have disability (where did neurodivergent come from?). Teachers insist you repeat the basics even though you have already compensated for them and are on to far more advanced stuff (just can't always recall what 27+14 is but physics is easy to comprehend).

As a teacher, my hope is that schools in 100 years won't be about creating good little factory workers, which is what our current school systems (in the USA at least) were designed for during the Industrial Revolution. Placing children in levels based on skill instead of age, truly individualized learning so that kids can learn at their own pace, allowing students to pursue learning through personalized interests, etc. I believe this kind of school system would greatly benefit all learners, from neurodivergent to neurotypical. Of course some neurodivergent kids disrupt classes, they have specialized needs that aren't being met in our current classrooms and no one does anything until they explode. The responses to the outbursts don't solve anything because the focus is always on how to 'fix the kid' to fit into the classroom setup that doesn't work for their needs. It's not their fault and our current system fails all kids who learn faster or slower than the group as a whole.

I hope so! I was punished, ridiculed and basically a kind of an outcast my entire life just for being "different". I don't even really know what is different about me, neither did any of those looking down on me for it - and yet, the very same people never hesitated in taking advantage of me if they got the chance to. A-holes. Not making children into equal and disposable units with the goal of maximizing their exploitability and not much else, in a positive future, will rightfully end ... but, are we heading towards progress, consideration, and the kind of equality many have been fighting for? Or are we heading towards a more efficient, more subtle but yet no less cruel optimization of ourselves? We may get to decide, but we may also be distracted by ourselves and those taking advantage of us.

I can't even begin to explain the ways public school has ruined my child's enthusiasm for learning, separated her from neurotypical friends, and set her up to fail because she's autistic. Most of what they've done is illegal because of her Individual Education Plan saying they must do x and y, but they ignored our concerns and complaints. My daughter didn't want to go to school and would literally have horrible anxiety and panic attacks to the point she'd grab my legs crying and begging not to go. We're trying to homeschool now, but it's incredibly difficult to do on our own. Our family has been left floating without a life raft, and it's just. so. hard.

I am happy, for now, that my neurodivergent children to have that label because it helps identify their need for services and alteration to education practices and and behavioural expectations. However, I HOPE that one that their labels will, one day, not be necessary as the world as a whole will identify and value and cater to the diverse range of neurologies that exist.

Actually it might become wrong to expose the latter because it comes before a fair trial. Law is law and just because one person does a heinous act against humanity and caught red-handed, the law cannot just be exempted for one person and not another. There's already problems with people wrongly accused for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or mistaken identity or just situations taken out of context. I feel it's going to be unacceptable to stick a camera in a man's face accusing him of preying on children at a park when he's just with his son because some vigilante is itching to catch a predator.

Do you have any idea how useless the "law" is with even investigating, let alone CONVICTING a r*pist!?! The reason women don't come forward is because we know it's extremely unlikely anything will happen to that person whereas we have to continue to live through the trauma waiting for the "law" to work. Also "law is law" isn't in any way true, every country has different laws. I believe victims.

Canceling is just awful in general if there's not proof or something backing it up. If someone didn't do a shitty thing, they shouldn't be treated like they did. They certainly shouldn't lose everything. But people love to cause drama and make life awful for people they don't like...or to get ahead themselves.

Woke, if you look up the definition, actually means being alert to injustice in society, especially racism. It gets over used and inaccurately used. I don't approve of cancel culture either or people whining about the tiniest of slights (though this can be subjective) but we should care about injustice. The right wing media often use the term to slam people who disagree with them politically, regardless of accuracy and people go with it. Sadly, a lot of the media dumb things down and communicate badly. I see badly written articles online daily. With confusing messages, misunderstood issues, and errors everywhere. The Daily Mail in the UK is a prime example and yet people will believe all of it without taking time and care to read widely and get a more balanced view. What we have little of, in the media, is balance and tolerance.

Right? Johnny Depp's case should be the pinnacle. The man lost out on numerous jobs because the public had made up its mind that he was a wife beater. What about those college football players that lost out on major NFL contracts because they were accused of rape? AND SHE LIED. I think she was prosecuted for it, but the damage was already done.

“What Is Acceptable Today That You Think Won’t Be Acceptable 100 Years From Now?”: 35 Predictions Shared By Our Community Tolerance of attention-seeking deliberate stupidity (ie. flat-Earthers, anti-vaxxers, etc.) is likely to go down. Real, verifiable and researched information is widely available on these subjects and will only become easier still to access as time goes by. Such mindsets will be seen as intentionally being difficult as the ability to say that you've never had access to said information becomes more and more impossible to claim.

Stupidity is eternal, but the means of manifestation has changed over the years. Many of the shows of deliberate stupidity from centuries past are no longer tolerated (such as the "hysteria" movement), but during their time were held by many an idiot and exploitative monster as a golden standard of thinking.

Sorry, but this is nonsense. Stupidity has always been part of the human race and isn't likely to leave it anytime soon. Pointing out that we have access to more information now is ignoring that we also have access to misinformation now. While some stupid things from the past have disappeared is ignoring how many new ones popped up. I mean seriously just look at everything we had in the past year with Covid, anti-maskers, anti-vaxers, 5G conspirators and what not.

Stupid has always been with us and always will. However back in the 80's and 90's I can't recall EVER seeing anyone on television or in the press arguing about how they believe the Earth is flat (for example). The only thing that's changed is the advent of the internet which has allowed any dingbat with any bonkers belief to gain a platform and connect with other cross eyed lunatics who agree with them. I don't see the internet going anywhere anytime soon so unfortunately I think we're stuck with them.

Sadly no. We all know the comics from a century ago about the very same issues that we have now. From governments spending more on the military than on care for the sick, needy and poor to people acting stupid during a pandemic and everything in between. What we learn from history is that it keeps repeating itself but in a worse way than we could imagine.

YES. I'm not someone who panics but the other day someone posted this video of about 5k people gathering for this event of Christian extremists called the 7 Mountain Dominionists who took vows to use force against anyone they deem an enemy of their religious viewpoint. They literally read out a list of people and it was anyone in the lgbt community, feminists, liberals of just about any kind, any program like schools which don't teach Christianity, any publications talking about lgbt or women's issues, and anyone who they feel are enemies to their goals. Just listening to 5k people making vows I got a chill down my spine. I know we all talk about how it's becoming the Handmaid's tale but...this was truly a little scary. I shouldn't have to fear that I'm going to be killed by some guy with a gun because I don't believe in the same religion. I will never understand religious arguments to this violent point. It's insanity and should be called so.

This life on this planet could be so amazing if every human could get a piece of the pie. We could all be fed, housed, get medical care, have access to resources like the internet. Live, be creative, contribute to society but also enjoy our own lives and hobbies. But some rich people got lucky enough to get a huge, HUGE piece of the pie and too accustomed to that level of obnoxious unsustainable luxury, too greedy to share - which means many, many other humans have to go without. Why do we idolize rich people again? This is not sustainable or something to strive for. Modern humans have really lost their way. We’re all going to pay for it.

I’m a nurse and I’m discriminated against because a professional athlete is paid more for entertaining people than myself or a doctor for saving lives. It’s disgusting. Also FYI, we don’t have a nursing shortage. We have a shortage of jobs that pay nurses a living wage. I didn’t become a nurse to make money but I have been a nurse almost 10 years and I just finally make over $20 an hour. People legit would rather pay for entertainment.

I don't think universal healthcare in it's form will survive I think managed healthcare aka they have to prove the cost of healthcare instead of making the price up as it's not a luxury service but a nessecity in example like utilities are managed ish edit I mean real health issues not unnecessary plastic surgery like breast implants or muscle implants to look more attractive those are luxury services

Free medicare is false, nothing is free. Large taxes pay for Medicare and speaking as someone who lives with free Medicare it is c**p. Long wait list for treatments. Why do you think a lot of Canadian politicians get work done in the states, because our system is broken. Besides Canada has now private clinics and surgeries where you pay but get better care, we have a two tiered system one for the elite and the rest suffer.

I knew I was non-binary and I was either bi or pan long before I met those people.

It's fine not to want religion for yourself, but for people who have those beliefs getting rid of religion would leave them empty and unhappy. Why make them lose their belief system id they aren't hurting you? I'm not saying there aren't those who use their religion to punish others, but the majority recognise it as a personal choice.

If religion has improved your life and it helps you...I have no problem with that. I don't hate religious people just because I don't share their beliefs. But it shouldn't be forced upon anyone. And by forced I mean your beliefs making it hard for other people to live their lives. And it shouldn't be AT ALL a part of politics or government. I feel like there should be some kind of penalty leading and up to disqualification if you make any part of your campaign about your religious beliefs. No laws should be made based on a belief system that may or may not be true.

I quit a pizza restaurant that had a policy to throw out any incorrectly-made food. In the middle of Surrey, BC, Canada, with an incredibly large homeless population. If you made a pizza and forgot one ingredient? Garbage. Cooked slightly too long? Garbage. Wrong garnish, parsley instead of chilli flakes? Garbage. Employees were not allowed to eat it. It was “to ensure employees don’t purposefully mess up an order just to get free food” but we wasted so many kg of food every day “just to make sure employees don’t accidentally get a lil freebie snack - and especially not homeless people! We’d rather contribute to the massive food waste problem in our country than make ourselves look good and be kind by donating unused food!” I’m just going to call them out - it’s Famoso Pizzeria in Canada and it’s the reason why I quit. After throwing 20 perfectly good (but slightly inaccurate) pizzas away one shift while hungry homeless people were begging outside our restaurant, I was done. What a stupid way to run the world. “You need food, I have perfectly fresh and healthy food that is going to be wasted in the garbage, but you can’t have it because if a human eats it I NEED TO MAKE A PROFIT, but if I can’t make a profit the garbage is fine. I’d rather you starve and throw the food away than miss out on a potential single dollar of profit.” It’s 2022, not 1635. Grow tf up corporations 🙄 and f**k Famoso Pizzeria. Rant over.

Yes I agree. Food waste is a seriously huge problem and it's one we can fix now, we just choose not because it's too difficult to make grown people take some responsibility and discipline. They see it as taking away rights instead of fixing a critical problem.

In some countries, restaurants use left over food to feed the needy. The US is to litigious to ever do anything like that. Also too many employees are likely to steal a biscuit so all left overs go in the trash. My wife worked at several eateries and they wouldn't even let her bring home a left over biscuit for my mom to feed her crows.

GoddessOdd is right. Water is the next big divider. It is already starting in the American West. Do they send more water downstream to water crops and animals ? Or keep levels high to generate electicity. Idaho is sueing Federal Government over water rights on federal land. It is getting hotter and less water. I suspect a mass migration from American West as it becomes more unlivable.

Check out www.skywater.com - the water is obtained from the air! I hit the lottery, EVERY house (near Houston & the Florida Keys) I own will have this!! 😉

Whether you're conservative or liberal, I will never understand this near-fetish following he has. Why do people think he cares about them?? Politicians do not care about you, I promise. This one in particular, but none of them really do. I don't understand why so many people follow him. It's an almost cult-like love. It's so scary and crazy. I always wonder how people are influenced by cults or fall for scams and this made me see how many people have such weak wills of their own they'll buy anything as long as it's said in a way that makes them feel like someone is 'like' them.

1000x Yes!!! Better to get rid of parties all together. Then people could vote on an individual for their actual qualifications. And, if you don't like them it would be more like disliking, I don't know, a celebrity or something, instead of talking it out on half the people in the country.

The parties are fine it's the politicians we need to change. Normal, reasonable politicians who aren't in it for media attention are being drowned out by the crazy ones and our government is now overrun with them. And it's all about money. They behave this way because they get donations and more money every time they do. Campaign reform is the first thing that needs to change in this country, more than anything else right now. I have no problem with politicians having to past some tests including a mental health exam before running for office. They hold our lives in their hands- we should know they can pass 9th grade social studies and aren't going to get us all killed because they can't deal with someone having an opposing opinion or treating it like a game of chicken, playing games with people's lives.

War is a pretty shitty thing, definitely. But militaries are here to keep people safe - even though they look terrible at times. And as for weapons, if humans don't change, it'd be terrible to get rid of weapons. Many people would be left defenseless and many would be killed.

In most cases, militaries use a certain discipline to teach people how to live properly. They educate (without bias when it is an option) and they train. A soldier wielding a fork can be more deadly than a teenager with a handgun.

From what I've seen, the type of people drawn to the military, often don' value education, and are angry, aggressive, power hungry, "alpha males". Many are not. But don't pretend everyone in the military wants to "live properly". Some join up because they love violence.

“What Is Acceptable Today That You Think Won’t Be Acceptable 100 Years From Now?”: 35 Predictions Shared By Our Community The glass ceiling. It is still around, although not nearly as obviously as it once was. When I was growing up, women were housewives and mothers. If they HAD to work, they could be teachers, nurses, secretaries, or any of the other 'women's work'. Now, women can choose any career, but in too many institutions, the good ol' boy network is as strong as ever, and actively screening out women and others. There are too many law firms, financial institutions and other corporate structures where promotions are based, not on ability, but on being 'one of the boys'.

My ex husband still thought in terms of "men's work" and "women's work". Things like mowing the lawn or washing a car was "unfeminine". This is only part of the reason he's my ex. One of my best friends was a lawyer. She should have made partner, but she was passed over time and again because she wasn't one of the guys... she didn't play golf and drink with the boys, but she was the second highest earner in the firm.

This is just a function of time. Current upper level management is 50-60 years old which means they graduated from colleges 30-40 years ago when more than 60% of graduates were men. Today 60% of the current undergraduates in US colleges are women, so in 30 years I fully expect upper management in most companies to be predominantly female and we'll be talking about how to get more men for diversity purposes.

Bigger companies actively discriminate but many women discriminate against themselves before even applying as they feel it's 'not right' for them. We have spent so long trying to change men's mindsets that we forget that we need to change the mindsets of young girls growing up, they must know they can be a mechanic, brick layer etc as well as be a lawyer..

GoddessOdd isn't talking about forcing women to go into "masculine" jobs. And "equal opportunity" isn't as equal as you think - too often, women are judged by their appearance rather than their abilities. People are innocently put in jail because the judicial system is not fool proof. So if you execute a person for a crime they didn't committ - which has happened and will happen in the future - you the state and government has murdered an innocent, and how can you redeem that? You cannot bring them back to life, and to send money and a "Oooops!" note to their family can't make up for the loss of their loved one. So just don't execute people - you don't want to realise that you made a mistake and not be able to correct it. Besides it's very barbaric and medieval, you know. Ignorant.

Of course these are based in the U.S. because it's where I am. But some are universal People going hungry, when just down the corner is plenty.. Native American People on reservations or anywhere else they don't want to be. Education being priced so far out of the range of anyone, that is a basic need to a majority. The fact that if your grandma's grandpa was very very poor, and then so on, until the most recent generation, one is doomed to have to fight harder, and longer, for everything you get. Rich or even middle class privilege isn't even realized by those who have it, but the lack of it is glaring to those who don't. Animals being allowed to breed into feral colonies, and go without homes. Nursing homes that are paid by the state being so substandard. Female centric birth control Plastic overused until it comes out everywhere Oil rigs, and transport ships Police brutality And this I hope is no longer tolerated Hate.

I agree with most of what you wrote except the privilege part. You have failed to consider the many people for whom that repetitive poverty was a reality and who clawed their way out, only to be accused of privilege. I am one of those. My parents emigrated (legally) and we were poor as dirt. No money for college so I had to go it on my own. I worked my a*s off for everything I have and, yet, people have the absolute gall to suggest that my success is the result of privilege. Bollocks!

It's the perspective: Sure, I look like I might have privilege, but I don't and no one considers the history, only what it is right this very second. Very myopic. Also, judging people based on their skin color works all ways. People of every color have struggled mightily. No one is in a position to judge.

The plant based substitutes get better all the time. I have been vegetarian for about 45 years. Back in those days, almost no prepared plant based foods were available in grocery stores, and what was there was pretty dismal. I remember making burgers out of millet and walnuts and lentils and ugh. What a mess. Now, with the use of soy, mushrooms, and all sorts of other plant proteins, the food gets better all the time, and it's healthier and less expensive than it used to be.

Also there is a condition, while rare, that causes some peoples bodies to make them basically drunk when they ingest carbohydrates. It’s not cut and dry.

I'm unclear what you are commenting on, the original post? The point is that it could satisfy your dietary needs because the goal is to make the cultured meat essentially indistinguishable from "regular" meat, including the nutritional value (it's muscle/fat cells, not a substitute that is heavy on carbohydrates).

It's not "vegan" in the sense that we are talking about actual meat and not a plant. It's just that the meat was recreated in a lab and not taken from an actual living animal. Same meat - no guilt.

Good call. I often find this in modern society, that sexuality is dismissed as something superfluous, rather than being considered a core part of persons identity and necessary for ordinary mental health. I think there is often a tinge of puritanism to it as well.

The thing with hydrogen stored in vehicles is that it first has to be turned into electricity within said vehicle. That not only adds to the weight but causes an energy deficit of around 60%, because it first has to be seperated from other elements, liquified, transported, pumped into the storage and later out of it into a car before it get turned into electricity. It's simply more efficient to use it in heavy industries or Power plants. The goal is to get hydrogen out of water with renewable energy, which makes it harder to acquire than gaining it from methane (CO2 as side product) - According to Prof. Volker Quaschning from the university of technology in Berlin

I'm retired navy. My whole career I worked on various classes of submarines, as a mechanical engineer. If they can make a piece of equipment to generate oxygen for the submarines, which come from sea water, you'd think they could do more. To think they can separate the O2, nitrogen and hydrogen so easily, why can't they find a better solution? Hydrogen was considered too volatile by the navy. The Russians tried to use it but had many explosions. So the navy sends the hydrogen back out to the sea through a diffuser.

I mean most people who are law abiding citizens do. It's the criminals that don't give a s**t, which is why gun laws only do so much. You aren't going to prevent gangs from getting them, and that's one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, gun death causes in multiple US cities. Not saying no laws, but we need to address the other issues that can influence that sort of thing too. Homelessness, drugs, no family, abuse... so many things can cause people to have the potential to go down a darker path.

As the comment above says, if you require a license to get a gun, it shows that you can at least follow one law, making it more probable that you'll follow others. If you have a gun without a license, then you can be more easily identifiable as a criminal.

I hope you realize that a gun license is one of the ways to tell if a gun owner is law abiding or a criminal. It's really simple, if you take a course and get a license, it means you have to potential to follow the rules of gun ownership, if you can't do something as basic as that, you don't deserve to own a gun. And if you are found with a gun without a license, you can be more easily recognized as irresponsible or a criminal.

Capitalism as it's practiced in the USA is unsustainable. There need to be balances. The income inequality that results from unchecked capitalism can be seen not only today, but in the early days of industrialism, when the rich lived in literal castles (Andrew Carnegie had a 100 room castle shipped to America from Europe) while their workers lived in windowless tenements with no benefits. There has to be a middle ground that encourages individual initiative without sacrificing the safety and well-being of the workers. In America, you currently have a situation where banks are buying up property to drive up property prices so high that middle-class Americans can no longer afford their rent.

Unregulated capitalism. All successful societies are a blend of three things. 1:Well regulated free market economics, 2: Democracy (proper democracy not the US/UK FPtP system), 3: strong government funded social programs (healthcare, welfare etc) When one of those three things is out of whack, the rest suffer.

It's where the means of production and all other aspects of the economy as a whole, are owned by the people and community as a whole. This means you can't have economic exploitation as you won't have power tripping psychopaths turning entire nations into corporate feudal states. I think male circumcision should be banned as well. Circumcision can prevent certain complications, but at an incidence of about 1/50,000, it's unnecessary in the vast majority of cases in the modern world. It's VERY much a cultural thing rather than a medical necessity. In America, the practice gained popularity in the 19th century because it was believed it would reduce the incidence of masturbation by reducing sensitivity.

I disagree, there will always be a market for a platform where people can talk without the fear of reprisal for their unpopular views (to be clear unpopular=/= bad, for instance, as shitty as it is being openly trans on the internet is liable to cause harm, doubly so if you are then also advocating for trans rights, but yes this unfortunately this does also mean that hate groups can also be anonymous).

Having more than one child. A hundred years from now the world will be so over-populated and habitable areas and resources so reduced, having more than one child will be viewed as an abhorrent felony, twins and such excepted.

Actually reproduction rates are below replacement rate in most of the world now, only a handful of Asian countries and most of Africa are still growing. The thing that is increasing our overall population is people getting older. The population of the planet was naturally set to increase when the average age leapt from 50 to 80, but that sets a very hard limit on the number of people. Once the baby boomers start dying off, there will be a drop. In fact many western governments are so worried by the low rate of reproduction - there literally won't be enough native workers in the future - they are considering ways to encourage couples to have more children.

I read an article about this not too long ago - they said they believe the total population of Earth will plummet rapidly and eventually settle at around 3-4 billion - almost half what it is today. And I know that China have discovered the gigantic flaw in their "one child" policy whilst also having a society that strongly favours men over women. They are now a rapidly aging nation of bachelors with a huge deficit in women to give birth to the next generation and as a result were forced in 2015 to increase the child limit to two.

"Over-population" is a relative term, and as the climate changes, and we continue to deplete and pollute our natural resources, even a small population may still be too many.

So how would one make sure people didn't have more than one child? Forced sterilization? Forced abortion? How far would one be willing to infringe on people's rights? Also, why would twins or triplets be excepted? If you're going to to go so far as to make more than one child a felony, I suppose one would just force the woman to selectively abort one or more of the babies.

Boomers are called boomers, because after the wars there was a huge boom in the number of babies being born. There are way more older people than children, nowadays. Eventually there won't be, and the population will naturally shrink, regardless.

I mean I would argue the limit should be 2-3 as 1 child is mathematically unsustainable. And 2 is only sustainable if you assume that everybody eventually has a child which is false for a whole plethora of obvious reasons. (Whether populationdecline is needed or not is a topic which I am in no way prepared to give an informed decision on, i am just saying that the statement of going forward in perpetuity, a 1 child policy is completely unsustainable)

As I transgender person I have an issue with drag. I know it's supposed to be fun, and a lot of the queens are quite talented, but I just find it to be mean and misrepresents what it means to be trans. I'm not saying that drag queens are trans, but the popularity of shows like that almost make things tougher for someone trying to transition, as if there is some expectation of how I'm supposed to behave or look. That's not me, but that's what people expect when they find out I'm transgender. It hurts and has honestly really slowed down my transition and shredded my confidence. Even if it doesn't go away I just hope people will start to learn the difference between drag and transgendered people.

That's interesting. I see drag as acting like pantomime, kabuki or circus. I've never seen a connection between drag and being a Trans person. A transgender woman is a real woman, not acting *like* a woman. It's who they are 24/7 not a role or something done for the fun of it or on occasions.

… that’s not what drag is. Drag is an art form which isn’t exclusive to men, women also perform drag. It’s a performance of gender, not of ‘a woman’. Reducing drag to ‘mocking’ is missing what the art form of drag is. It seems your understanding of drag has come from RuPaul’s Drag Race which is watered down and is such a narrow view of drag. What RPDR shows is a performance of femininity, but what RuPaul deems acceptable. I’d advise you visit local clubs, see how diverse and amazing drag is.

Well, you keep your shoes on when eating at restaurants and when in a store, don't you? A survey found that the majority of Native Americans prefer the word "Indian". One Native American I heard in an interview explained "The word 'Indian', while technically incorrect, carries with it the whole history of our people's relationship with the whites. The term 'Native American', while well-meaning, does not." He went on to explain that he felt that the term Native American was an attempt to forget that history, to hide it in new language. This makes a lot of sense to me, as names have a very important meaning in Native American culture.

I love animals. I just happen to love most animals more when they're covered in barbecue sauce. Seriously: the fact that animals taste delicious is a sign from nature that we were intended to eat them. We gain nutrition from them. Every living thing on this Earth survives by stealing energy from other living things, and that includes plants. Think plants are peaceful? Plants are in a constant state of war, but they're moving so slowly we just don't realize it, and a lot of the battle is happening underground. Trees will block out light from other things. They use their roots to strangle other plants to cut competition. That beautiful, peaceful forest is a war in slow motion.

The concept of supporting the weight of a pair of breasts is not going to disappear, but technology in 100 years will ensure that they are no longer uncomfortable or unhealthy. Also women will have the freedom to go braless with much less stress as body shaming and nudity will be viewed significantly different in a century.

You're thinking of old-school corsets. Corsets now are fine. But more to the point, bras or some sort of support are needed by many women. If you're a woman with a larger chest, they're likely to cause back pain if you don't use them at least part of the time. If you're an A or B you're probably fine? Anything above DD can get painful.

I think this should say something like, is should be acceptable for a woman to wear a bra if she doesn't WANT to. Some women are more comfortable, wearing a bra. And there's nothing wrong with that. Personally, I hate them, and will go without (usually wear a tank top under my shirt instead) whenever I can. But I still wear one on certain occasions. I think it should be a personal choice, and no one else's business.
