16 Women That “Peaked” In High School Share Their Pics For “Glow-Down” Challenge
InterviewYou’ve probably seen a pic of your classmate showing up on your news feed who looks virtually unrecognizable. Their knock-out looks and confident smile are nothing like you remember seeing by the end of high school. These jaw-dropping transformations, known as glow-ups, have been surfing around social media and you can see what I mean with glow-up pics after moving out of conservative homes, 10-year challenge glow-ups, and mental health glow-ups.
But in reality, not every glow is up. Armed with a smashing sense of humor, one woman, @gabslife99, has posted a TikTok video to initiate the glow-down challenge. The caption of the now-viral video said: “I physically peaked in high school. Like, the hottest I’ve ever been was when I was 18. I look nothing like that now.”
More women got on board to share their own before and after snaps of the glow-up in reverse. Both honest and comical, the glow-downs are a fun response to near-perfect glow-ups that often are too far from reality. Ultimately, looks don’t even matter, since we are beautiful in our own way.
This woman posted a viral video on TikTok saying she physically peaked in high school

Bored Panda reached out to Gabrielle McDonald, who posted the viral video on TikTok challenging everyone to share their glow-down snaps, and she shared how she came up with the idea. After watching so many TikToks on her “for you” page about people “glowing up,” Gabrielle got seriously fed up.
“It was annoying me that I couldn’t participate in that challenge, so I made one I could participate in,” she laughed. On a more serious note, Gabrielle said that she feels like “it sets an unrealistic goal for most people as we all don’t get to have drastic ‘glow-ups.'”
“Sure, something like weight loss or leaving a toxic relationship is a huge glow-up that I support. But people who just hit puberty and/or put a bunch of makeup on and call it a ‘glow-up’ gives off a vibe I’m not okay with,” she said. The woman urges everyone to think of people who are suffering with being insecure about who they are, as the glow-up TikToks may set a pretty bad example to them.
And she challenged everyone to share their glow-down snaps too
Gabrielle, who didn’t expect her challenge to go as viral as it did, said it was all spur-of-the-moment and that she didn’t expect anything to come of it.
At this point, she hopes that what people would take away from the glow-down challenge is the realization that “it’s completely normal to not look how you might have done a while back. It’s okay to feel confident in the way you look now and not dwell on how you used to be.”
“We should love ourselves just the way we are and not try to set unrealistic goals for ourselves,” she concluded.
In no time, other women on TikTok have joined the humorous challenge

Flattering angle with makeup and hair done vs. terrible angle straight out bed. How profound!!
apparently most of them posted a flattering and an unflattering picture just to make it funnier.
Load More Replies...A blocked drain prevents sewerage coming into your house, though.
Load More Replies...It's pretty easy to look worse off when you scrunch your face all up, frown, and mess up your hair like most of these posts
Its sad only girls took challenge. I think more men need to take this challenge.
It's kind of expected though. Men don't really care about this stuff in general.
Load More Replies...For women who are always complaining about being judged on their appearance, they certainly don’t help the matter. This makes it difficult and downright embarrassing for those of us who truly want to be taken seriously.
Agreed! It adds to the idea that your looks / youth is your value as a woman.
Load More Replies...Pretty much. Anyone who looks worse off now then they did before.
Load More Replies...I like to call it growing up and learning to be comfortable just being you.
I was especially struck by the woman who seems to be having a lot of fun with outdoor pursuits. Maybe that's less of a glow-down and more of grow-up :)
Load More Replies...To the people who are stating that this post is harmful: I see nothing wrong with self deprecating humor. in fact, I feel the ability to recognize a slight physical decline in ones self, is therapeutic and healthy.
Glow up posts are harmful and create false standards. This fights them.
Load More Replies...I thought I got fat, old and outta shape. Comforting to know I just glowed down.
...but "never-ending is my desire for trending".
Load More Replies...Haven't we all glowed down since COVID though. When I started coming back into the office...it was in "professional" looking pjs. Also, makeup with a mask? I think not. You want me to come back into the office instead of working remotely? Meaning less sleep for me? Then guess who isn't doing their hair, this b***h. My house got a glow-up though. Lots of time for cleaning and projects.
I’ve been spending my covid times dieting and not putting styling products in my hair, and developing a better skin routine. Sleeping more, having more time with my partner, having more time to do my makeup and use face masks and whatnot. If I don’t come out of this looking better then I’ve wasted months. I wear makeup with a mask. It seems more necessary for good eyeliner and brows than ever before.
Load More Replies...No doubt I'll get voted down for this comment, but calling it as I see it: This is the first time, I believe, that I've seen a Bored Panda feature where women are obese ... and aren't called "empowered" or "fabulous", or "beautiful" or the like.
I was hot in my teens but I didn’t know how to do my hair and makeup as good, so it was just youth wasted on the young. The older you get the more you learn those things. But it’s so much harder to stay in shape now though. So I get why people are glowing down.
Load More Replies...To me it would make more sense if the second image was a recreation of the original. For so many it's the hair, clothes, posture and makeup, not to mention the obvious scowl vs pleasant expression. Do over!
Join the club. You get older, you put on weight and you don't look the same as you did before. Stop the presses! Also, portraits taken with enough makeup to paint a battleship doesn't count as "peaking".
"Glow down" aka as aging naturally... it happens to all of us. Some people really change a lot through the years, others not so much.
Honestly shows how the stress of being an adult can produce physical changes
I glowed down too...I glowed way the hell down. Depression, anxiety, food addiction, PTSD, and a phobia of leaving my house the past 7ish years really did a number on me, yall!
That is hard. I hope you're able to get support. I deal only with depression and anxiety, for which I take Celexa (for life) and do therapy when needed (I found a very good therapist). They don't "cure" my problems, but they make them far more manageable. As for folks who tell me not to take meds, I tell them firmly, "I need them" and they back off.
Load More Replies...This is humanising and reassuring. For those of us who blossomed later and felt like ugly ducklings in high school this is somewhat of a relief to know that the 'cool kids' ended up like everyone else. I'm not gloating, I congratulate those who participated, it proves that your true worth isn't based on 'hotness'
Then you missed the point. It isn’t about cool kids getting uncool. It’s about the fact that not every woman looks better with time. Some get fat and have kids, some get wrinkles in unfortunate places, some get double chins. Not all of those girls looked cool in high school. Just because you were a nerd / bullied doesn’t mean that the cool kids were bad or that they all ended up glowing down. The point is that outside of HS, there is a world where women are held to certain standards and not everyone meets them.
Load More Replies...It's sad to see how many people made such judgmental comments , it's those kind of comments that are more harmful than the post itself all those women chose to put themselves out there to show that others go through similar things. I think everyone needs to read "two moons"
they're still pretty no matter what age...true beauty is in the inside..the people who care about the outside..are the ones that are hurt
I don’t see anything wrong with them , you clearly not the same when you were 16 lol
It's not "glow down" it's called letting yourself go... This is offensive on so many levels, I see women over 35-40 at my gym that come and work out every week and look amazing. If you stop caring about yourself and taking care of your body there is no one else to blame but: You!
This is my new go-to phrase for when I can’t be bothered to shower. It even sounds relaxing. Like you start of with “Netflix and chill” when you date, and then it’s “unwind and glow down”when you have lived together for a few years..
I'm used to seeing the I was a dork look at me now pics and it makes me depressed cuz I was healthy and in shape and look at me now is how I feel. Im sure there's alot more of us out there then the I look better now because life sucks more the older you get.
most of them very interesting females with experience and not very far from more sexiness, if they want. it´s all about the good vibrations !!! keep on doing your thing!
don't worry everybody is ugly in their own ways. That harsh truth but you must face it to become a boring adult which is ugly because of lack of romance/optimism
They are just not wearing all that extra make up 15-16 year olds schmear on their lovely young faces. Putting few pounds most probably following childbirth or not being High school anorexic anymore isn’t a glow down it is called growing up.
I think these women weren't being fair to themselves -- they seemed to purposely take bad photos of themselves now.
What a load of pointless codswallop. Flattering photo verses unflattering photo, this concept is hardly a revelation. 🤔
Come on girls: everyone ages, and the interesting personalities and maturity more than makes up for a wrinkle or 2. You are ripening.
chances are, all they have to offer is looks tho. Hence crying out when the looks start to go.
Load More Replies...They all look good. They took their best day in High School vs. a regular day now. All are fine.
I wish I was strong enough to participate in the ‘glow-down’, and show how I’ve doubled in weight and felt my acne scars multiply since I was 18, and feel confident despite this. But this thread doesn’t fuel any confidence when most of these are people just not wearing the same amount of makeup as their ‘before’ photos, maybe have put on a couple of lbs, or just aren’t blonde anymore. I see nothing uplifting here, nor anything to reassure me I’m still ‘beautiful’.
Thank you for letting me know I'm not the only one this has happened to.
It's too bad that so many people focus on outward appearance and very little, if at all, on being a good person.
These scudders are just sharing intentionally cherry-picked photos on both ends of the spectrum.
According to this post, "peaking" aka "glow up" means when women felt they were at their most attractive. Excluding, smarts and happiness, success and contentment...based solely on looks, for me it's been a roller coaster. 16-23, I was stunning, absolutely gorgeous ( I can say this now in retrospect), I can honestly say that. 23-33, involved depression, weight gain, not so pretty. 34-44, another delve into attractiveness, was once again deemed a beauty. Now at 50, still not an ogre but never the beauty I once was....but just wait...I am gonna kick 50's and 60's a*s with my former glory.😛
Maybe you should just take better care of yourself, eat healthy and work out, then you wouldn't have to talk about any "glow-downs"
Your body will age no matter what. That fat is going to find your waist and hips. Your body has programmed it to. (Then one day you will get even older and have trouble keeping the pounds on) You skin will be different, even body hair changes as you age. (I realized I have dark hair on my toes a couple of days ago. Didn’t have that in high school..) People age, bodies change.. the sooner you accept it the happier you will be.
Load More Replies...I don’t think most people would. If they had lots of time they’d relax more and eat more.
Load More Replies...I know some women personally who need to do this. More so that they let themselves go waaaaaayyyyy too much since HS or college
The 'after' pics look great! These are women that have been living life.
Sooooo ... I'm the only one that didn't think of it as being "glowed down," just well-grounded ... OK ...
End of story : people have to stop eating peanut butter after 18 yo
Girlfriends, you are all gorgeous. We are an ageist society - especially for women. If you live long enough, you will pass your peak. Mine was 29. I'm 55 now, baggy, saggy, fatty, and wrinkly, but intellectually and psychologically, I've never been better! Viva la femme!
What are mature women doing on Tik Tok anyway? Oh, they're just in their 20's and already their looks are fading so much they're comedy fodder?
This article is depressing. There is no such thing as a “glow down”. Aging is a natural process in life and women should be proud of what they have become. Women should be reminded that their bodies may have changed because they may have experienced childbirth. Or, that their bodies have overcome physical ailments beyond their control but still fighting! These women are beautiful then and still are. Their experience in life is what makes them strong and even more beautiful. It is my hope that these women will realize how beautiful they truly are.
Bored Panda, you really seem to post a ton of stuff about women who look one way or another. There is more to life than how you look. Maybe post something about how women build their characters up, how they work on having strong hearts and solid, consistent spirits.
I don't really think any of these post-high school photos can be called "glow downs". Personally I think they're at their best being themselves. I went from being a way too skinny, exercise freak to being comfortable in my own skin. Only took leaving high school + 20 years.
Women talking about peaking in high school? So you had more value when you had the body of a 16 year old. Now that you don't have the same metabolism its all down hill despite being a parent, professional, lover, contributing member of the community... it's all over because of your looks? I get that it's a joke, but its not a funny one.
Most of them are just bloated as in water retention after a normal weekend that usually includes alcohol and salty food (many extend this behaviour even to other weekdays)...Fat only builds up visibly if one continues on the path of nonexistent exercise or eats more calories than their bodies consume. Why is this such a big topic even in 2020? It is not "normal" for people to get fatter with age. It just means that you just LET YOURSELF GO for some personal reasons. Some people are okay with it - others aren't when they one day realize their own state of being. And that is okay. Everyone can bounce back - but that REALLY needs commitment to dietary choices and changes to your lifestyle. What a bummer. JUST F*****G DO IT - it is that simple.
