Person’s Appointment Gets Canceled Because They Were 5 Minutes Late, But They ‘Trick’ The System And Get In Anyway
A few days ago, Reddit user theoryofrelativetea cemented their name into the long history of r/MaliciousCompliance, a place where people celebrate conforming to the system but not its spirit.
The Redditor made a post, titled “My Appointment Was Canceled For Being 5 Minutes Late? I Guess I Have To Reschedule” detailing the time they had to get their fingerprints taken by the police but were rejected at the reception desk due to being a moment too late.
Since theoryofrelativetea really needed to get this done, they decided to stick around and devise a plan that would get them inside. Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the clunky bureaucracy machine exposed one of its stupid errors and theoryofrelativetea knew what they needed to do.
As of this article, the post already has over 40,000 upvotes and 730 comments, many of which are praising the Redditor’s quick thinking. Continue scrolling and check it out for yourself.

This fun little scheme reminded me of a time when US band Vulfpeck also “hacked time”. The Michigan funk outfit went viral a few years back when they released Sleepify, an album that consisted of 10 songs of silence that varied between 31 and 32 seconds.
The result was a five-minute album of nothingness that the band asked fans to stream on repeat while they slept in order to generate enough royalties for the band to go on tour.
They even promised free shows in return!
And it worked. During its seven-week life on Spotify, ‘Sleepify’ garnered around 5.5 million plays. According to the band’s keyboardist Jack Stratton, the band’s earnings from the platform came in at $19,655.56 (this figure could have ended up even bigger had Spotify not removed the album (the company never specified why)).
I guess what these two stories prove is that time is a valuable commodity. If you have enough of it, you can make it work for you.
People applauded the Redditor for their quick thinking

Share on FacebookThis reminds me of a show from a few years ago - "Better Off Ted". It was an absurd workplace comedy about an absurd megalomaniacal corporation accompanied by an ironically chipper soundtrack and a main character who constantly broke the fourth wall. There was an episode where his name got misspelled on an ID badge which triggered a chain reaction of bureaucratic screwups and insane red tape nitpicky requirements that eventually were solved by sending his badge on a jetpack into space (it makes sense in context, I promise). That was one of those shows that was short-lived but will live on in my heart forever.
Love this show and this episode is one of the best. Especially the HR ladies reactions to what is going on.
Load More Replies...Do this with hotels too. If you need to cancel same-day and they have a 24 hour cancelation policy, reschedule your room for later, then cancel. There are loopholes if you try hard enough.
Again, the officer may not have a way to deal with the situation, as the information can't be input into the system. But this is a very smart way of beating it
Yeah, I think (at least, I hope) everyone understands the cops point of view, he wasn't being a jerk, if he was, he would've fought him on the early check-in. But, Why did you say "again"?
Load More Replies...Yes it was bloody brilliant but he was late. He should’ve called ahead telling them the transport he was on was running slow. They will accommodate when you alert them. Being late shows disrespect others time. It shows a lack of discipline within yourself. You have ONE appointment time to make sure to be on time for yet you decide to not take the transport into consideration knowing there can be delays etc?
Oh, climb off the high horse. If someone being five minutes late because of subway delays offends you, you’re the problem.
Load More Replies...Yeah but, now the cop sees the a potentially problematic loophole, but maybe that will prompt them to fix the stupid 5 minutes late thing, and keep the info in the system for longer after someone misses an appointment. Because if he could check in 72 hours before his appointment, who's to stop other people doing that for every appointment, and just screwing up the whole timing system altogether?
I wish the title was more accurate. The article clearly says missed by 5 minutes not by seconds. Yes it gets cancelled at 5 minutes but you still aren't seconds late
I think they were referring to the seconds after receiving the "your late" email. He technically wasn't late until he was 5 minutes late. Once he got the email his info was erased.
Load More Replies...And people wonder why mental health issues are so prevalent. The system is literally designed for you to fail.
I am actually sympathetic to the guard on this one. He didn't cancel the appointment and it wasn't his fault that OP was late or would have no further opportunity to get fingerprinted and be on time for his work. Still it's a nice way to get around the system and also makes sure that an unused appt gets used up..
I did something similar at a restaurant reservation. We walked into the restaurant, they said wait time was 45 minutes to an hour, so we put our name on the list. The I hopped onto OneTable, had a reservation booked for 15 minutes from then and sure enough they called it on time. I told them to cancel the walk in as they were seating us for the reservation time...
I honestly thought he was going to do something to get himself arrested so they'd have to take his fingerprints. lol
i wish this sort of thing worked with cable companies and the like, who won't do something unscheduled while they're still on site because that's not what they were scheduled for. you literally have to make another appointment. it's a waste of time, money, gasoline, everything, when they could just take a minute to do the thing while they're still there.
If you’re not 15 minutes early you’re late. He beat the system but still LATE! The applause for this annoys me. Grow up, wake up on time and prepare for any obstacle in your way if it’s that important. You gamed the system, golf clap.
