Our cultural differences are what make us unique, and they’re what bond us with others alike. What we see as ordinary always depends on people, place, and context and surely it will differ from one person to another.
That becomes super obvious when we leave the comfort of our home behind our back and go on vacation. Ask travelers how often they've been in uncomfortable social situations, had weird conversations, and found themselves strangers in a foreign land, and they will tell numerous stories.
Now this Ask Reddit thread has recently gained a lot of attention, amassing a whopping 28.3k comments and 27.8k upvotes. “What things do Americans like and the rest of the world not so much?” someone asked and people started sharing their own experiences, impressions and stories that show us once again just how relative things can be.

Tipping culture.
It's crazy how much people defend an absolutely terrible system.
Tipping. A way to continue slavery and make it legal to pay staff below the minimum wage.
A lot of us would like to get rid of it, but how? You can't just turn around and raise minimum wage... Oh wait you can because that is EXACTLY what we did in Oregon. $12.50 for rural counties, $13.50 for urban areas, and $14.75 for Portland Metro. Nationwide it's $7.25. We are the only state with a variable minimum wage.
Yes, as an American, I believe this entire system should be scrapped. Fair wages for all.
I think it's terrible and should be done away with. Pay your employees a living wage. They shouldn't have to rely on grumpy people that take offense to everything to get paid.
As an American, I agree totally. I also believe that employment regulations should be set by law, not unions, not individual contracts... same for everyone.
I only tip here in NZ if the service is outstanding. We don't have a tipping culture, but possibly wages are better here. The labour laws certainly are.
Americans do NOT like tipping. It's getting excessive at this point. Everyone wants a tip for practically nothing.
I'll say it again: (most) SERVERS DO NOT WANT TO GET RID OF TIPS. They make far more on a good day in tips than if they were being paid a "fair" wage. This won't change if they don't want it to.
Nobody ever mentions that tipped employees often make $20+ per hour. If they were paid a fair wage they'd probably take home less.
MM-DD-YYYY Date format 😅
I've never understood this, because doesn't it make sense that it would go shortest, middle, longest edit: longest to shortest makes a lot of sense as well
It's based on the way we talk. We say June, 5th 2023. We can also say the 5th of June 2023 but that's more words. But we don't because that's five words vs. three words. That's where it comes from. Look English is a hot mess of a language and American English is even worse.
Load More Replies...YYYY-MM-DD works well for naming date-sensitive files, though. That way they sort in the correct chronological order on the computer.
I am probably missing something here but I never quite understand that one. Computer systems autofile things based on date anyway. So you can call it what you want as well and search based on the name or the computer date (or contents etc). Why would you add the date to the file name when it's added as part of the file anyway? Sorry, it's probably a dumb question (and worded really badly) and I'll slap my own forehead now to save time.
Load More Replies...I lived in London in 1990-1991. After learning how they write dates, I couldn't understand why the US didn't. It makes so much more sense
I prefer the DD-MM-YYYY date format myself, as well as 24 hour time, because I can count past 12.
Yeah and so can most people. There isn't ignorance in living by normal time. I'm not some kind of army General. Quick and easy.
Load More Replies...American here, but where I'm from we say "Its December 4th, 2022" not "Its the 4th of December, 2022". I think that's where the format comes from, to match the way we actually say it.
Commercials about pharmaceutical pills. "Ask your doctor about taking xyz... side affects can include (everything).
Wild!
This is not "liked by Americans"; the pharmaceutical companies pay to air the commercials.
And the 1st amendment to the constitution gives them the right to keep doing it even though it's stupid
Load More Replies...Just because we have to endure these stupid ads does not mean that we like them. I have seen 1,000s of them and couldn't tell you one thing about the drug. As soon as they come on I zone out. Same for Lawyer ads.
Americans do not like this. What would make anyone think otherwise? No, we don't like 8 minute commercials interrupting our programs to sell us drugs we don't have the power to buy.
Several things on this list are things we don't like :/

this is actually illegal in most of Europe... companies have to pay humongous fine (bankruptcy level height) if they get caught doing it
Only the US and NZ do this. We find it just as bewildering. Sometimes SNL will do comedy skits and parody prescription commercials. Look it up on YouTube. Some Of them are funny! Lol
Opinion signs outside their houses. Like "in this house we support...". I find it weird and unusual.
We have a “Love is Love” sign in our yard, but only because a few houses down from us has a sign that’s pretty much the opposite meaning.
See like those types of signs are fine, but eventually it’s just too much.
Load More Replies...Oh lord yes. Stop advertising yourself to the world, no one actually cares that much.
It's only been like this for the last 30 years or so. It really didn't start until Bush V Clinton in 1992. That was about the same time CNN hit screens and it's about the same time we started treating our politics like horse races. It wasn't always like this.
I've always wondered about this, too. I just don't get the point--do people really think a sign is going to influence someone driving by?
The 'love is love, no one is illegal' etc signs should be there tho. Political opinions no, but whenever I see pride flags or the signs mentioned above I feel like I'm actually want3d and loved by my communitt
College sports. Particularly football and basketball.
The rest of the world loves soccer, but nobody gives a hoot about it at the university level.
Yes,Texans take college football SERIOUSLY! We have several major colleges and people are fanatically local to their Alma Mater. I'm in Houston and we have 12 colleges within 2 hours. 7 actually in Houston. It's crazy 🤪
Load More Replies...Its absolutely ridiculous that loads of jocks can go to college and many smart kids cant. Way to waste your actual potential as a society.
Stop calling it « soccer » it’s football, period. If they want to use the same word for handegg that’s their problem but don’t pressure the rest of the world into accepting this nonsense.
You're literally mad at people for using their local language. Do you get this upset about lift vs elevator, flat vs apartment, trunk vs boot? Let it go.
Load More Replies...COllege in the USA fulfills a different function than elsewhere. In the rest of the world, it's where you go to get focussed academic education and training. In the USA students are getting a much more general education, and are are also learning how to socialize. If high schools didn't suck here, most wouldn't need college.
In Mexico, university takes 5 years, because the K-12 system is so bad. I have also heard of US graduates wanting to do post-grad in the UK, and finding their degree treated as the equivalent of a high school diploma.
Load More Replies...The problem is other school programs getting cut in favor of keeping sports and student needing to be in sports to go to school. On top of that, those students aren't paid for playing more or they don't make any money off the merchandising that happens off their name.
Flags. So many American flags everywhere.
Gemany, too, and "special days" are 85% Football related (or crappy right wing/covidiot protesters)
Load More Replies...America is a very Nationalist country. Always has been. People like myself have been trying for decades to change that. But we still have people who want to abolish NATO and abolish the UN. We live in a global world, if we want to survive, we have to work together as a united humanity. We need to do what's best for ALL not what's best for US.
Nationalism only makes sense to me when watching the World Cup! Otherwise it just causes separatism and perpetual discord….
I saw tons of flags in the UK .. national pride isn’t just an American thing.
Really? I live in the UK, and I can go for months, maybe even years, without seeing a single flag. Might see a few England flags if there's some football happening, a few Union Jacks if there's some sort of royal shenanigans, but generally speaking nobody cares about the flag; it's certainly not fetishised the way it is in the US.
Load More Replies...Worst at what? Or are you meaning worse? As in worse than America?
Load More Replies...This. My country only has flags up when it's National flag day or Independence Day. Otherwise no flags except in government owned buildings
One of the weirdest things is when you think back to pre911, you only saw them at government buildings or on the 4th of July
Once you understand what is behind all the flag-waving and uber-"patriotism" it is just embarrassing.

Walking inside the house with shoes on.
As an American, I have NEVER worn shoes in ANYONE's house! I don't know anyone who does! I'm not sure why people think this is an "American" thing.
Load More Replies...Apparently this is an unpopular opinion on this thread, I've always worn shoes inside (except when I had a roommate who didn't like it), and it's actually almost never caused any genuine cleanliness problems. If you've got mud or snow on your shoes, you take them off at the door. Otherwise, things are fine. *shrugs*
I find it weird that people expect their guests to keep their floor cleans, unless they have a baby or toddler crawling around down there. I hate going to a nice dinner at someone's house and being asked to take my shoes off. Now I have to walk around in bare or stocking feet? But usually I'm over for a casual evening and I don't care. In my house, I tell people to do what is comfortable. I can clean the dang floor.
Load More Replies...That's not an American thing. Taking shoes off religiously every time you enter is normal in some countries and cultures, but across Europe and the US you'll find a broad mix of shoes-off and shoes-on households.
I am from Denmark, and have never been to a house, where people have their shoes on inside on a regular day. A few times, if people throw a party, I have seen some wear shoes inside.
Load More Replies...South African here... we all walk with shoes in the house... nothing weird about that.
How many rainy/snowy days do you get down there?
Load More Replies...We put mats on the doorstep to wipe your shoes. Many find mopping and vacumning, which orderly people do anyway, preferable to the thought of having someone's dirty socks/feet on their carpet/rugs. Work shoes, etc., are not worn in the house any more than more than dirty work/sports attire is acceptable when sitting on inside furniture. You don't need a large brain to figure this out, if you know what I mean.
American here. We don't do this at my house, my parents house or my friends houses. I seem to remember taking my shoes off in everyones houses my whole life.
Yes. Mg only exception is, if my ankle is bothering me, I wear sneakers inside. But I have indoor sneakers just for this purpose.

Suspicion in a country where anyone over the age of 18 is allowed to buy a gun? Warranted.
Everyone over age 18 cannot buy a gun. Convicted felons, for example, cannot legally own firearms, though laws can vary state to state.
Load More Replies...You should watch Judge Judy. Some of the things they sue for are laughable.
Truth. Such a litigious society. It’s a shame that the courts don’t take a stand by throwing out more frivolous lawsuits AND assessing penalties against obnoxious plaintiffs.
The courts are the most asinine time-wasters in the whole of the legal system. If anyone should take a stand, it's the people who should refuse to participate in their reindeer games. Civil and criminal (eg. jury nullification).
Load More Replies...In a way, I wish we were more litigious. I wish the poor and disadvantaged had the same access to the legal system that the rich and powerful do. If there was a level playing field, there would soon be fewer lawsuits because there would be less need for them. If a bank or a big corporation knows it's going to be held accountable for doing wrong stuff, it's less likely to do wrong stuff. And of course the same is true for private individuals.
Load More Replies...The Americal sue-em culture is really a thing to behold. And to fear.
It’s a media trope that sort of died down years ago. Filing suit is a very expensive undertaking and few people get involved in lawsuits

Do most other countries just blindly trust everyone? Women in US have to be suspicious of everyone to survive (rape, robbery, murder). I obviously shouldn’t write our travel brochures. 😶
imperial units
(edit: fahrenheit aswell as celsius are good for certain scenarios so ill omit the former)
It's good for intuitively knowing what the temperature feels like. 100 degrees? Hot as hell. 50 degrees? Medium temperature. 0 degrees? Just don't go outside. At all. The closer you get to 100, the hotter it is, and it makes for easy knowledge by thinking of it as a percentage of the 'maximum' (100). Also, the perfect indoor temperature is 69 degrees which is another point in its favour lol.
Load More Replies...True that. If someone says '84 kg' to me, I have to take my socks off to work out what that is in stones...
Load More Replies...When I was in elementary school we were taught the metric system as it looked like widespread adoption in the USA was imminent and then .... it just petered out. I still had to know SI units at Uni for chem or physics, though.
It's get even weirder when you realize there are different ways to measure divisions of an inch. Theres the one most folks know that us 8ths, 16ths, 32nds, ect ect. There's another that is quasi metric that divides an inch by 10 so you have 10ths, 100ths, 1000ths, and (here's the messed up one) 10ths of a 1000th.
ok so now you can see why metric is more sensible. thanks.
Load More Replies...yeah youd have thought they'd have kept the stupid original british thing of shillings, pence, guineas and pounds, which had a similar 1:12 ratio.
Load More Replies...FFS I’m 55 years and remember having to learn the metric system in elementary school because “someday the US will use the metric system”. My daughter, now 26, was told/taught the same thing. I’m familiar with grams/milligrams/kilos/and cubic centimeters due to my career as a nurse. It’s so much easier with pretty much everything being base 10. I’m not too good at Celsius though
ICE. Filled till the brim before you pour any drink.
Same here; sensitive teeth, and sometimes a little short of breath when cold from my esophagus affects my bronchi.
Load More Replies...I grew up here and never understood this. It's physics, pure and simple, you get much less drink if you have ice taking up all the space. It's especially crazy if you're paying restaurant or amusement park drink prices... the drinks are cold already, you should get your cup filled all the way up with your drink, not a useless space waster! I love ice cold water and milk and juice, so I just keep my drinks in the fridge, No space wasters needed
Most places in the usa have free refills on fountain drinks.
Load More Replies...MUST HAVE ICE! When I lived in London, my neighborhood pub had ice for me. Said if I got the trays, he'd make ice. 4 ice trays later and I had cold drinks. Brian was great the entire year I was there.
Always need a ton of ice. Every night I fill a glass to the brim with ice and add water. I love super cold water and if I wake in the middle of the night and need something to drink; my super cold half melted ice is right there.
We don't like it/want it, restaurants figured out long ago that ice is basically free and when you add more ice, you use less of your costly beverage. Its a cost saving measure used by cheapskates.
Except the ice isn't free. It includes the cost of the water and maintaining the machinery. It can actually cost more than the syrup and carbonated water. The same with iced tea and other cold drinks. And the actual cost for anything at the cup is almost negligible.
Load More Replies...If the drink is already coming from a machine that keeps it cold, I'm asking for no ice
Doesn't stay cold long especially when outside in a hot climate.
Load More Replies...I love ice. I bought an ice machine a couple years ago after almost a decade without and it was love at first use. My partner and child are not American born but they very much love ice too. Ice water for the win! Shaken cocktails ice cold, as are the occasional soda or juice.
Cheerleaders
It's definitely a sport and takes a lot of athleticism. People train from an early age to be on cheer squads.
Yeah sure, but its also a beauty pageant. No way that ugly betty stands a chance to make it into the team.
Load More Replies...They are oversexualized and it costs way to much to become one. At my school it comes to no less than ONE THOUSAND dollars. And they still have to pay for clothes and trips.
For people making comments about the squads only choosing thin girls, that's changed a lot in years. Larger girls and guys with more muscle are excellent pyramid supports. How else do you expect people to launch a cheerleader into the air 20 ft? Most people just assume all cheerleaders are tiny and thin because it is easier to throw a petite person into the air for stunts.
I have mixed feelings about cheerleaders. Yes, it’s very much a thing that you have to be strong and flexible to do, I respect that, but it’s also (nearly) always young females in short skirts and tight tops supporting male players. I get the athleticism cheerleaders have, but do girls have to basically display their bodies and encourage “manly” athletes? Idk, sorry for rambling, I’m just not sure what to think.
I think part of this has to do with sexism in sports. Football teams are basically for male students. There are exceptions, but they are that, exceptions to the norm. Baseball is male oriented. Women have to play softball.
Load More Replies...They get paid pennies. that's the worst part. my cousin-in-law is a cheerleader for an nfl team. she could never did to live in Philadelphia without her trust fund.
Good cheerleading is like group gymnastics and fun to watch. I wish I had been that athletically gifted.
I don’t understand it, and I can’t fathom being confident enough to do it.
For those claiming it's not about short skirts and sex, please name ONE major male sporting team which has male cheerleaders
Most college football teams have cheerleaders with males and females stunting partner cheer teams.
Load More Replies...i don’t get cheerleader cheering for others, but i think competitive cheerleading is amazing and impressive. as a former cheerleader, i just wish it were more ethical
Driving everywhere. Anywhere you go, you go in a car.
But I suspect for many, other options are so rare they don't think about them even if they do exist.
Soooo accurate! I work 50 minutes away from where I live (41 miles). Public transit isn’t an option. Even for close shopping… it’s not an option. The nearest bus line is 4 miles away.
I'd argue it IS an option, just one that the town/city planners have purposefully chosen not to use. This is a huge filling on the planners part.
Load More Replies...Yeah, I don’t want to walk 5 miles to the nearest store or 60 miles to work, thanks.
People in cities outside the US (European ones in particular) have more options than just "car or foot". Most bigger cities have networks of trams, metros and bus lines, not to mention thousands of kilometers of bike lanes, that mean a car is more of an inconvenience (parking/gas/maintenance/...) than an asset. (Living rural without a car is out of the question here, too)
Load More Replies...The supermarket is 8 miles away. Are we supposed to walk there and back with groceries? People don't understand how big this country is.
true, but, this country has inadequate public transportation....
Load More Replies...It depends where you live here. I've lived in a few different places in the US and some have great public transportation and some seem to have none whatsoever.
I grew up in a Los Angeles suburb whose town bus system induced me to skateboard everywhere. Later, I walked to work in Hollywood (Los Angeles) and the East Village (Manhattan). I walked, biked, or bused around San Francisco, which is definitely more suitable for mass transit for than for private autos. (My dad from L.A. got his station wagon stuck at a N*b Hill STOP sign.) I'm now in a rural mountain hamlet with a county bus stop just a five-minute-walk away. But I don't want to carry a load of grocery bags that distance. Am I lazy?
Load More Replies...The US has a lot of wide open space. Unless you live in a city where most everything is congruent to walking, or a small town with centralized necessities, you’re going to need a vehicle to get anywhere.
Pretty much this. Most large cities have great public transportation: subways, surface trains/trolleys, bus systems. Those systems often extend out to the immediately surrounding suburbs as well, via commuter rail and bus systems. Once you get beyond that, there is virtually nothing in the way of public transit, but there are hundreds of miles of roads that can take you anywhere, as long as you have a car.
Load More Replies...Europeans don't seem to grasp how absolutely massive the United States is. You can drive for 4 hours and still be in the same state. It took about 6 or 7 hours to just cross Pennsylvania.
I would LOVE to be able to sit back and let someone else do the driving! Sadly, that kind of infrastructure doesn’t exist in my rural area.
It's because we have to. There are no other options. Believe me, I WISH cities were made to be more walkable and public transportation were available, but unless you live in like, New York City, it's just not. I think the car and oil lobbies prevent funding for the infrastructure for it.
Consider the fate of the extensive Southern California "Pacific Electric" rail system commonly known as The Big Red Line. For a minor fare, one could ride hundreds of miles throughout the region. Killed off by Detroit, which promoted 'freeways' and other automotive routes. So sad. Mea culpa: I grew up within walking distance of a former PE station, closed about the time I was born. Sad. ;(
Load More Replies...We have a political party that is opposed to upgrading our mass transit. Our infrastructure has been so neglected by them that any high speed rail system would have to include a total upgrade of the rails. Millions of us would love an interstate passenger rail system. When you can elect authors with no legislative experience to our Senate, it shows you how crazy the electorate can be.
Big trucks
Big, loud, THIRSTY trucks 😂 And unless you have a regular need to transport cattle (DOA), building equipment or pianos I fail to even see the justification for a driver to occupy so much public space (parking or driving).
Load More Replies...While big trucks *can* be useful, in this part of the country (CA), these monstrosities are everywhere, but 90% of people will never use them as a truck any more than moving their brother-in-law's sofa, or using the 4wd to destroy some poor farmers property. So wasteful. And let's not even get into how these people drive!
That’s not a big truck, it’s a Landcrusier used the world over. Even Toyota has a truck for the US market that’s bigger than that (the Tundra). Fail Bored Panda!
Yeah, thought the same. Whoever chose that picture has never left the city...
Load More Replies...Very useful in the country, on ranches, in the mountains. But why drive it in the city?
Drive monster trucks in town to terrorize wimps in sane vehicles, of course. I see more of them waiting in fast-hamburger lines than parked at ranch supply stores.
Load More Replies...It’s a status symbol thing, unfortunately. I live in the south and I just roll my eyes when someone in an urban setting decides they need a $70,000 enormous truck just to drive back and forth to a desk job.

Peanut butter and jelly
A lot of us were fed this as kids, so it tends to be a comfort food now.
In my impoverished early-adulthood, I worked manual-labor jobs for little pay. What nourished me? Visits to Dented Cans (aka Grocery Outlet) stores for case-fell-off-the-truck jars of peanut butter and honey. Mix similar amounts in a bowl; eat with spoon; return to work, energized. Them was the days. ;(
Load More Replies...UK here, this is my son’s favourite sandwich. Though here it is peanut butter and jam. Jelly is something else entirely
Jelly is jam adjacent, it's not entirely different.
Load More Replies...Nah, this is global. I'm a Kiwi, and I became a peanut butter and jam addict in the mid-70s, before we owned a TV. I thought I had invented it for about a year, then I started school, and found it was already out there XD
I have never in my life seen a wooden butter knife (that rhymes lol)
I had to stop reading to go make peanut butter & jelly😋 If you really wanna make your life worth livin, you gotta make toast and put crunchy peanut butter on so it gets a lil melty and then strawberry jalapeño jelly🤤
Lol, I was wondering how many people might eat PB&J because of this thread.

HEY ROOT BEER IS DELICIOUS! THEY'RE JUST USED TO DRINKING BEER. (This is a joke i do not mean anything hateful by it. I respect what everyone thinks :)
But you are right, in Germany we have so many different types of beer and I guess people guess root beer might taste like our "malt beer", which is very sweet and without alcohol but still a sort of beer. I tried root beer and think it's just a sort of soft drink. Not my taste but I'm in love with the spicy ginger beer and the well known ginger ale 😋 those aren't what a German would call "beer". (◠‿◕)
Load More Replies...I make my own ranch, which my whole circle enjoys. I’m not a fan of commercially made dressings in general. Love root beer and it’s cousin Sarsaparilla
I've never had root beer but I want to try it. Here in theUK there's "dandelion and burdock" which is of course, made from dandelions and burdock root. A lot of the brands are imitation flavoured, but the best one, Fentimans, contains the actual extracts of dandelion and burdock still, with added pear juice, ginger and star anise and it's sooo damn good. So, I'd be interested in trying root beer as well as sarsaparilla. xP
I don't know. Ranch is so much better. Put it on celery and there you gave heaven.

Garbage Disposals
Just shove that turkey carcass in the disposal and run some warm water behind it
You can’t put bones, meat, eggshells, or very fibrous fruits and veggies into the disposal. You can break the disposal or damage sewer lines.
Had a dumb friend put shrimp shells down hers. Don't do that unless you want to smell shrimp for days.
Load More Replies...We've had our garbage disposal for six years now. Works perfectly. Also barks to let us know when someone's at the door.
Most people don’t really use their garbage disposal unless it’s just like small pieces of food left on your plate
Really? We use ours a ton. Not turkey carcasses, but almost all the fruits and veggies and breads. It gets processed into energy. So much better for the environment than putting in the garbage.
Load More Replies...Well, not a turkey carcass… if you still want a working garbage disposal. There are limits to what you can (should) grind up.
I'm living in Germany now, and I actually miss having this. It can be quite useful.
Luna agreed. Not having to dig food out of the sink plug or trap. It’s important to note that the US have a water treatment system that prefers food to be mashed or crushed. Now that we can throw all food waste into our green bins (Australia) it’s made the requirement less but still. They are getting more popular out here though (along with plumbed fridges yea!)
Load More Replies...So, in France, the reason they don't have garbage disposal units in sinks is because they expect you to compost, either on your own in rural areas or by using the separate part of your trash bin specifically designated for vegetation (all organic matter) in nonrural areas. It looks great on paper, but tbh, in nonrural places, no one respects this.
The garbage disposal has nothing to do with composting. It's just for grinding up little bits of food that wash off dishes, not for getting rid of vegetable peels/scraps. We (my family) run the disposal for a few seconds after washing up, then walk outside and toss the veggie scraps into the composte bin.
Load More Replies...Good thing you don't believe in them since you don't know how to use them.
It's so much better to store it for a week or two in your outside garbage bin, so a stinky-a*s truck and a million flies can pick it up and take it to a landfill to stick up the poor side of town.
God damn delis. At least out of all the places I’ve traveled to the US by far has the best delis. I don’t know if I can live somewhere without a great Jewish or Italian deli.
There is a Katz's Deli here in Houston. It's AMAZING!
Load More Replies...Italy is an Italian deli everywhere and all the time, we just call them "grocery stores"
Paraphrasing “America has the best deli’s the Jewish and Italian ones are the best”…so the op’s mind would be blown if they ever go to Israel or Italy then….
They're Ashkenazi Jewish delis. Most of the Ashkenazi Jews are in the US.
Load More Replies...hmm IMO, in most mainland european countries, the cold cut meats are usually more varied and of higher quality, same with mustards, breads and cheeses, than here in US. You might need to go to specialty stores or high end groceries to get same quality
Corn syrup
There is a time and place for it like pecan pies and cheap pancake syrup. But not every where all the time.
The best “authentic” Southern pecan pies do not use corn syrup! My great gran’s is just pecans, light and dark brown sugars with a little flour, eggs, milk and vanilla, and maybe bourbon if you’re feeling sassy.
Load More Replies...As someone with a huge corn allergy, PLEASE STOP PUTTING IT IN EVERYTHING DELICIOUS
I know this will probably gross people out - but I grew up in the South, and we mixed Karo syrup with peanut butter and then slathered that on a hot buttered biscuits.. It was divine! And don't forget....sugar comes from a grass. Corn syrup comes from corn (of course), which is also a grass. Not that I am defending corn syrup - because I know it's cheaper and the farmers sort of control all that.
High fructose corn syrup is evil. Regular corn syrups have their place, but its use isn't all that widespread.
Ordinary corn syrup has its uses. The problem is the newer processed "high fructose corn syrup" that food companies now put in EVERYTHING as a CHEAPER sweetener, and that our bodies do not recognize, cannot metabolize, and just store as fat.
Waffles with chicken
Country fried chicken with biscuits and gravy is amazing also.
Load More Replies...This is a regional thing traditionally that you can now get at some places besides the south. But not an American thing by and large.
We have it up in Canada some places. I've had it. Excellent.
Load More Replies...That's not a normal American thing. You hear people talk about it, I know there's a famous spot in L.A. that serves it, but it's not something you really see everywhere.
This is a very "normal" American thing. It's been around as an American dish since the 1600s in one form or another (Thomas Jefferson himself is known to have made chicken and waffles). The current popular version, fried chicken on a waffle with maple syrup, originated in the south as a soul food staple that eventually made it's way north and west and is served in major restaurant chains nationwide like IHOP. I really don't know how you haven't seen this literally everywhere.
Load More Replies...Oh lord yes ! Chicken and waffles so good…you’ll slap yo mama for not making em all the time! Lol
This used to be much more prevalent in the US but food coloring. When I moved from Japan to the US, I was surprised at how colorful their foods were.
These days Americans are now more keen to organic natural stuff so I see it less but it took me a while to realize that blue raspberry is not a real thing.
They made them blue so they wouldn't be confused with the red ones (cherry or strawberry)
Gotta have my recommended daily dose of red #40! Mmm, mm! Love those petroleum derived food colorings!
Actually blue raspberries exist, their scientific name is Rubus leucodermis and they are more dark blueish black than bright blue, but they do exist. They are also related to Rubus occidentalis which is a black raspberry native to the Eastern side of North America.
Can confirm. As kids we would go on raspberry harvests in the woods by our house. Delicious.
Load More Replies...And now I finally understand why do many blue candy is raspberry flavored, I have always been wondering, why blue ... (All other flavors usually come in the color their fruit is)
My mother [British] thought casseroles were weird and disgusting. Once her British friend came to visit, and asked that we not go to a restaurant "where all the food is mixed together in an awful jumble."
I love most casseroles.
Since casseroles were originally French, maybe she was just cherishing the ancient enmity
Not sure which part of the UK she was from but casseroles, hotpots, and stews are very common meals where I grew up in the North.
The US casseroles are very different though, from what I've read. Lots of tinned stuff mixed up.
Load More Replies...Casseroles in the UK are different from the US ones. Here it's basically a stew that has been cooked in the oven.
I was going to say that a meat pie is pretty much just a casserole, in pastry.
Load More Replies...Casseroles are pretty common in the UK, but generally not served in restaurants as it is considered 'home cooking'.
I've never had a casserole in a restaurant in the US. Maybe a shepherds pie at an Irish or English style pub.
Load More Replies...We have casseroles all the time, but tend to call them stew - I'm making beef stew with dumplings for tonight's dinner, can't wait!
Some people have a thing about food touching or mixing together. It's a real thing. I think certain foods compliment the flavors of other foods.
Yes, it's a real thing...my food mustn't touch each other. Christmas dinner is the worst...and Chinese food. But I do like casseroles...that's not the same as those foods end up tasting delicious once all melded together..but separate food, must.stay.separated.
Load More Replies...British people complaining about bad food, that's hilarious from a land that considers baked beans on toast to be breakfast.
Baked beans on toast is not breakfast. It could be eaten for breakfast, or be ingredients within a breakfast but it is not, traditionally, breakfast.
Load More Replies...Casserole is a good way to make sure certain leftovers get eaten before they expire, however, not everything can be made into a casserole. Lots of things can, but most definitely not everything. Also, people who grew up poor in the US (like myself) were raised with various types of casserole.
My sister is visiting the US from Europe and sent me a picture of a small coke and asked "why is it so big?" I could see old glory flapping in the wind, boys.
Once again, we have a confusing stock photo which does not illustrate the caption: I don't think anyone would think those glasses (or the 330ml cans next to them) abnormally large. One reason some esrablishments' "small" Cokes may look large to tourists is that they may contain significantly more ice than non-Americans are used to, so the volume of Coke in it might actually be relatively small.
I can understand the fascination with soda before 1945, but it’s just gross now! I would drink it every once in a while from when I was five or six until I was about nine years old and then stopped altogether unless I have an awful stomach ache that only Sprite could cure. Even then, I prefer something ginger-based or water.
I only like Coca Cola...the rest of the sodas are waaay to sweet for me. I rarely, rarely drink it though beacuse I know how awful it is for us...but when I do....woo hoo! Soda pop!! 🥳
Load More Replies...Over-eating, large portions and drinks. And we wonder why obesity is so widespread?
Glasses at the local eateries in Europe tend to be marked at the one litre point with some clearance. At the better places the glasses are filled to the mark before any needed ice, and the clearance will handle any added ice.
1 liter?? That's a huge drink! I've never seen that in Europe.
Load More Replies...Its big because its going to be 90% ice. Those cups do not actually contain as much soda as they look like they do.
Hate it when restaurants bring those mini cola bottles or cans, as well as overcharging. So stingy.
Dish out the product in large amounts and you create more addiction to the product which then raises your company profits. Americans love bargains; in other words, we can buy more for less money. Coke used to come in reasonable sizes, but the company could produce it more cheaply by using high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar and increase the size without losing a penny.
Biscuits and gravy
And you’ll get a bunch of different variations of somebody’s granny made it only a certain way…so that’s how you know it’s authentic! Bacon grease? Sausage? Strong black coffee? Just never say you made it from a powdered mix!
We make ours from bacon grease. It's amazing. And also f this list. Biscuits and gravy have a long American history behind them, and one of the few good things that came from American slavery.
Load More Replies...You take that back! You take that back right now! I love my WV style pan gravy and homemade biscuits slathered with real butter on top!
I have never had this, it's not a thing in South Africa. Those things on the plates are scones.
there's actually a difference! American biscuits are normally made with buttermilk, and aren't sweet, but buttery and flaky. Scones can be served with fruit, but you'd never see that with an American biscuit. (this is all according to Google in my own words haha) Pillsbury makes canned biscuits, if you could I'd recommend looking them up and maybe trying them!
Load More Replies...This originated from making food from ingredients that were easily stored without refrigeration, and from being poor.
They are also a way of making meat and the flavor and fat from the meat go further.
Load More Replies...they are! They're flaky and buttery, cuz they're normally made with buttermilk. Glad to see someone on here not saying that they sound gross haha
Load More Replies...Those don't look like biscuits, aka cookies - more like bread rolls or puff pastry.
in america, these are biscuits. from that geico commercial, i've learned that what brits call biscuits, we call cookies. here, bread rolls and puff pastries are not only different from this picture, they are different from each other. lol

Free public restrooms. I know they're gross but they are nice to have.
Was gonna comment but changed my mind so I'll just say Have a great day pandas wherever you are!
Thank you, I hope you have a great day too!
Load More Replies...Are public restrooms not free in other countries? I’m genuinely curious
Yes, most are here in NZ, and I never paid to use one in England or Australia.
Load More Replies...What's wrong with free bathrooms? The rest of the world wants to pay to use public bathrooms?
I like free toilets, but I don’t mind paying if it means the toilet is clean and safe (guarded by scrappy old ladies as they often are here).
Load More Replies...Not so many of them still around nowadays!
Load More Replies...The only bathrooms I paid for was when I visited California. I'm southern, we don't pay for bathrooms out here.
You must have been in some tourist-trap in LA or SF? Those are the only places I've seen pay restrooms here.
Load More Replies...I came from California, home of mostly-free public toilets. (Often accompanied by humorous slogans and art -- but I digress.) I was sent to Germany on military maneuvers and chanced to need a public restroom. Imagine my surprise to encounter a toll-taking old gal at the loo door. Pay before peeing, hey? Or p!ss on a wall somewhere. It's traditional.
Handicap accessiblity. Old buildings/towns in Europe are nice, if both your legs work.
Uk is in Europe and we have plenty of accessibility. It's a good thing.
Yeah ,y'all actually have better accessibility than we do in quite a few places
Load More Replies...This one is kinda dumb. What are we suppose to do? Tear them down? Newer buildings are build with handicap accessibility in mind but you can't expect that from things created hundreds of years ago.
Older buildings can be modified to allow handicap access - how do you think countries older than the US have done it?
Load More Replies...Depends on the country and the practicality of providing disabled access. You aren't going to get a wheelchair ramp up a 12th century cathedral spire for example, but there are laws requiring access to buildings and transport in most European countries. The UK in particular has very strong laws regarding equal access.
There are days when I'm barely able to walk to the store entrance. Being close helps so much on days like that
All public transport systems in the EU have to be accessible by now, and most buildings since the 1950ies usually have elevators.
I'm a full time wheelchair user and find the Uk and 98% of the places I've visited in mainland Europe to be very accessible. However have struggled getting around some major US cities! I find US disabled toilets to be much worse than Uk/ European ones too- especially not having pull down bars down the side of the toilet, to help you balance as you're sitting down pulling up your trousers etc. I always feel so unsafe using them!
well, to be fair, most modern public buildings in Europe have perfectly fine accessibility. The old ones however, were built hundreds of years ago, when being born or becoming disabled (example: losing a leg) was a death sentence. Some city centres in Europe are older than the US is as a country. That's not to say Europe isn't acessible though, many places are trying to make themselves as accessible as possible, but with these buildings being so old, and many of them being under protection due to their age and history, there's only so much that can be done.
24 hour stores. I was in Chicago working with a colleague from Switzerland who suddenly realized around midnight that he needed a network cable to configure a mobile router for a job the next morning.
I told him that I'd meet him in the hotel lobby to drive him out to Walmart.
He was happily surprised, as he had forgotten about the US's famous chain of Walmart stores.
Yup. Same where I live. There is only 1 24 hour store near me and its a bit of a drive away.
Load More Replies...As a Brit I was blown away at the size of Walmart, it was MASSIVE! Only place I’ve been able to get all my essentials in one place. Bread, milk, trumpet, iron lung, Volvo, glockenspiels and Dino nuggets
Most stores, except maybe gas stations, are no longer 24 hours. People say it's because of COVID but it really started because crime in America can seemingly not be stopped. At all. And employees didn't like walking to their cars in the middle of the early morning.
In my area, COVID truly was the reason. I live near ASU which is one of the largest universities in the U.S. All the major grocery chains and gas stations were open 24 hours. Then, after CDC confirmed the 5th U.S. COVID case at the university, all stores in the area started closing early.
Load More Replies...Oh it's great if your kids need some medicine in the middle of the night!
It’s just very convenient when you realize you don’t have a network cable at midnight.
I wouldn't say full, but we do have some 24 hour supermarkets (but limited to certain trading hours on a Sunday). We also have 24 hour petrol stations on major routes. The supermarkets are falling out of favour though, and a number round me have returned to shorter opening hours.
Load More Replies...I've never understood why WalMarts were EVER opened 24 hours. Well over a decade ago, I went to one just after nightfall, and the dregs of society I saw made me NEVER go to one after dark again. Granted it didn't help the one I went to had armed security at the front door, but I shudder to think what was there at 1, 2, 3 AM. I'm pretty sure though, 24 hours ones are a thing of the past around me as well.
Europe has 24 hour stores too - as does Asia and much of the rest of the world....
I only went into a 24-hr Walmart at night once; I was curious to see if people are really out shopping at 2 am. Lol
Yes but it's not as easy to shop as the aisles are being stocked.

Bankruptcy laws. It's a major reason why America has historically had some of the highest rates of small business growth and entrepreneurship. America is one of the most forgiving countries when it comes to personal and corporate bankruptcy (student loans notwithstanding).
Comparatively, European countries are much more pro-creditor which severely hampers any sort of investment that's even somewhat risky.
Nope, just good, old, regular for-profit prisons.
Load More Replies...Because European countries don't support small businesses. Instead, they protect the giant companies like Siemens from bankruptcy and criminal real estate developers from prison.
I learned this watching the show “can’t pay, they’ll take it away” from the UK. It was fascinating to me. You can go into debt here in the US but no one is going to come knocking on your door to take away your belongings to pay off a debt. (The only time is if your belongings were used as collateral for a loan or if you are convicted of a financial crime.)
Unfortunately here in the US we have something called civil forfeiture. And one does not even need to be guilty, only suspected, to have property (and money) seized. And even when cleared of all and any charges, good luck in getting anything back.
Load More Replies...So people can borrow big sums of money, and if they're sufficiently incompetent, not have to pay it back. Creditors get a bad rap for wanting their money returned. Bring back debtors' prisons!
And that is a good thing? Go bankrupt, bankrupt a load more companies in the process and all is forgiven. Isn't that the art of the deal?
One of the lesser known results of the American Revolution was the elimination of debtors prisons.
The only debt you can not get dismissed by declaring bankruptcy in the US is from student loans.
Yeah, America. Something like 90% of bankruptcies are directly related to medical bills
Americanized Chinese food. No one has us beat in that category.,
I might get downvoted, but... Kind of wish people would stop complaining about "Americanized" Chinese food. Lots of dishes were invented by Chinese-Americans way back in the early 1900s because of the war. It may not be authentic Chinese food, but it is authentic Chinese-American food.
This is a good point. The same apparently goes for some like Mexican American foods. There was an article about a chef who was saying that Tex Mex isn't really American food, but Mexican American food that exists because ingredients changed with location.
Load More Replies...Westernised Chinese food isn't really just an American thing. The Chinese diaspora is vast and diverse. It wasn't until the 80s that I realised that some dishes were adapted for westerners.
Ditto with Indian food. There are dishes in the UK that if you went to India, they wouldn't know what you were talking about.
Load More Replies...In western countries Chinese food has been adapted to suit local tastes. What Chinese people eat in China is usually far removed from what you get in a Chinese restaurant in America or Australia.
Yes!! When I visited Beijing, I was happily surprised by the foods, and ate a lot of dishes that most westerners just wouldn't appreciate.
Load More Replies...I don't mind Americanized any food just as long as the bill it as that. I dislike "real Italian pizza" but its not. Our pizzas taste nothing like the pizzas I loved I Italy.
🤢🤮 Chinese food in China is freaking amazing. Sometimes you can find it in the US. vegetable variety isn't here though.
Bumper stickers
See a fair few in the uk but we are more of a “baby on board” sticker nation
And in SE Asia some time back people liked to have "EU" stickers on their cars. Geography is such an artificial concept, right?
Load More Replies...I once saw a sticker on a car with Grumpy Cat that said "Grumpy Cat doesn't care about your family". Love it! 😄🤣
It's nice to see a funny one; a good laugh is always welcome. Rude or nasty bumper stickers are uncalled for; there is enough negatively already.
Why do people have bumper stickers on their cars? And often rde one's!
I'd like to say optimism, even if it's blind sometimes. The CAN DO attitude is extremely strong. I would also put belligerence up there for better or worse. That "Get the f**k out of my face, I'm not paying for / doing that" attitude. Whether you actually can or not, the American culture makes you feel like you can really do anything. Again, it's a double edged sword but you'll seldom find an American who's just going to lay down and take someone's s**t or heed someone who says (to your aspirations) "You can't".
Realism would be a better approach. My niece cannot ever be US President for example (not born in the US being the biggest block - we're in the UK). And she stands absolutely no chance of even being Prime Minister (parents aren't rich enough for attendance at the right schools), but she could make it to one of the other top jobs running our country if she so wishes. Being told she can do *anything* is just a lie. But she'll be supported to the best of everyone's ability in the direction she chooses to go.

I don’t know - it’s false optimism at the totally inappropriate moment we don’t love so much. Although I can only speak for where I live, naturally.
Yeah, except for work. Americans get pushed around, abused and exploited in their work lives all of the time. They don't put up with that s**t in Europe. They (Republicans) want to raise Social Security eligibility up to 70 years old. If they even suggest raising retirement age in Europe there are riots in the streets.
Free soda refills at dine-in places
I guess it’s why they are so up for drinks being 50% ice - they can get more drink for free?
Actually, so restaurants can give you less. Especially when it comes to cocktails.
Load More Replies...The rest of the world doesn't like free refills? So you'd rather be charged for them???
Mostly only at convenience stores or fast food stores. Some sit down restaurants have started charging if you get more than 1 refill. Others you can get all you want. Some refill water, hot tea, iced tea, lemons & coffee for free but charge for anything else
Dr. Pepper is my go to fountain drink. It does best in ice. Mountain dew gets watery quickly over ice. Pepsi makes my teeth squeaky.
