Hostile architecture. You might not be familiar with the term, but you've probably seen it in action. Those spikes on the window ledges, designed to keep the birds away. Or, in a more sinister fashion, things like strategically-placed armrests or rocky floors, cynically installed to ensure that vulnerable people in need of shelter are forced to look elsewhere.

Not only are homeless folks discriminated against directly and culturally, but also structurally too. These exclusionary designs, denying people even the right to find a place to rest, are a stark illustration of our society's collective disregard for basic humanity. Surely we can do better than this?

This heartbreaking list, compiled by Bored Panda, shows some of the most offensive examples of 'anti-homeless' designs, and it will make you ever so grateful for that roof over your head. Because it seems that if misfortune strikes and you should one day happen to lose it, you are most certainly not welcome to try and find a place to sleep on the streets. Scroll down to see what we mean for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

A lot of people are one month's pay from being homeless, yet many of them see homeless people as a separate species. I actually feel sorry for whoever did this, anyone who shows so little empathy for a fellow human must find it hard to look in the mirror. Being kind is so underrated and so easy, it costs nothing, makes you a better person and enriches your soul; win-win. I'm not saying I'm perfect, far from it but I try to be kind

Can't have empathy if you've not been in that situation. Can only hope that people can scrape up some sympathy from somewhere. So many don't. I totally agree though - kindness is one of the biggest things we should encourage in our children.

I work in downtown Portland OR and unfortunately I see this type of thing happen a lot but most of the time it is homeless people vandalizing other homeless people's stuff. I have to intervene one night because 1 homeless guy walked up to another homeless guy while he was sleeping and just started kicking him and his things.

Instead of this brutality, why not create homes for these people, just beds, a shower, soup, isn't too much to ask for, these humans are our neighbors, in some cities more is done for our unwanted cats and dogs, I say it is not for lack of money, the money is simply in the wrong hands, the filthy rich have no heart, with the coming election, not one word about helping the homeless, It seems that there are buildings in reasonable condition that could be used, many of them are vacant as companies move to a more modern building, or a different part of the city, A Huge Waste, can anyone tell me I am wrong !!!

LVMPD goes around the homeless encampments and slashes tents a couple days every month. They give them one day's notice and come sunrise, they cut up the tents and seize property. I've been told it's to encourage them to get off the street, but I cannot see it as anything but punitive. This is at the behest of Las Vegas' worst mayor ever, Carol Goodman. It was sufficiently crappy enough of a move for me to actively campaign for her challenger. She sucks.

It probably has a lot to do with it. When city councils and rich corporations decide to use spikes and other detestable design features to tell homeless people that they are not welcome in the area, this empowers the haters. Hate is, I believe, almost always based on fear. Homeless and destitute people remind us that this world is far from perfect, including the uncomfortable thoughts of "it could be me" and "I really ought to care".
