Single Mom Shares Her Professor’s Response After She Misses Class, And Professor’s Response Wins The Internet

Raising a child while trying to put yourself through school can be a difficult juggle, especially when childcare plans fall through at the last minute. That’s exactly what happened to university student and single mom Morgan King, but when she explained herself to her professor, she never could have expected the response she received.

The 21-year-old, who studies Therapeutic Recreation at the University of Tennessee, is the proud mommy of a little lady named Korbyn, and works nights at a restaurant to support her when she’s not in school. When she had to miss an important class on June 14th, which included an assignment and a quiz, to look after baby Korbyn, she wrote an email to her professor in apology. The reply that popped up in her inbox the next day was so genuinely heartwarming, Morgan couldn’t resist sharing it on Twitter.

As it turned out, the rest of the world thought it was just as sweet. The professor in question, Dr. Sally B. Hunter, became an overnight Internet sensation, garnering over 26 thousand likes and almost 5 thousand shares for her sincere words, as well as appearing on publications all across social and professional media. Read her touching email below, and remember that even the smallest offer to help can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Morgan King, a single mom and university student, recently had to miss class to look after her baby daughter

When she emailed her professor to explain herself, she received an incredible response, and shared it on Twitter

The heartwarming letter garnered thousands of likes and shares, and quickly spread across social media

The professor, Dr. Sally B. Hunter, is a parent herself, and understood Morgan’s struggle

She seems to be adjusting well to her newfound fame

As you would’ve guessed, the praise and support came rolling in for both Morgan and Professor Hunter

“We all need people around us, people supporting us. Nobody can do this journey by themselves,” Hunter told a local TV station

I migth be going to far here, but for me the real question is why such situations arise at all. If you look at Scandinavia, campuses come with childcare facilities, which have a priority for students with children, and are on top usually free (at least for those with a small pocket). Moreover, some countries offer tuition support that goes beyond the very basic needs, making it unneccesary for single parents who study to get part-time jobs that does not actually help them in their profession (such as being a waiter or waitress). Everyone says our modern nations must be family friendly, everyone moans that highly educated people stop having children, and everyone acknowledges that education is vital. Why do we not create the environment for meeting these goals, but rely on dedicated individuals such as this mother and her professor?

Simply put, some countries and especially the US kind of function on a 'survival of the fittest' principle. Many of them are so convinced everyone can achieve the American dream with simple hard work that they don't see the need to create this supportive environment. In fact they see it as 'meddling' in people's personal lives. My husband (American) told me people even get fussed about restaurants adding salt and pepper beforehand because, and he quoted, 'they don't get to determine how much salt I put on my food'. Probably the communism scare coming from Russia during the cold war didn't help matters much.

Good news! I'm happy that some people know the meaning of Humanity and know how hard raising a kid alone can be. We also had permission to bring our children to class and the University :) In extreme situations like this of course :) It should be common!

At my university it's totally normal that women bring their babies, maybe it's cause I study to become a teacher for elementary school ;)

I just want to say that a similar thing happened to me 26 years ago when I was taking a class towards getting my Masters degree in Early Childhood Special Education. My childcare provider was not available and i called to tell my Speech Professor. He said something like the following: "Just bring her in and put her in her swing in front of the class. If she doesn't fall asleep we can listen to her babbling. This is an infant-toddler speech development class. Your daughter would be as asset to the classroom experience." Again...this was 26 years ago! Debbie G.

This is how I "attended" classes at UNC Chapel Hill!! I even went to a job interview with the legendary Dean Smith! My dad was offered the position, but could not take it as it required him to move into the dorm with the basketball team. (Baby and wife you know) I was a " chick magnet" too bad he was already married 😂. My father was not going to let his long awaited baby girl interrupt his finally semester in college. He packed me up and off we went. This was 1970 so 47 years ago!

This is great for a tenured professor of sociology but as an adjunct in the sciences, I would likely lose my contrqct if I let students bring their kids to lectures. My kid isn't even allowed.

I wonder how long it will take before parents who just fail to plan childcare start bringing kids to class. I have been the "understanding and compassionate" person and the hardest thing is to draw a line on the slippery slope of personal responsibility. Somebody is always going to want a second inch if they see another getting one inch. That really bothers me about human nature.

That's very nice of the professor, but hopefully it's a ruse for the mom to show up with the kid while the professor has called Child Protection Services over her naming her kid, "Korbyn."

I went to school with my Mom and her teachers were always nice. I was probably about 6 or 7 when she started going and I'd take notes and play "school". One of the teachers in a math class even "called" on me once or twice a month and would ask me simple questions like, "Man, what's 4 Xs 4. This one is really hard! Can you help us out, Brittany?". I felt so freaking awesome being able to answer a college question that I assumed (at the time) none of the college kids could answer.

Childcare is a priority concern for so many women. Men, on the other hand are usually not so directly affected. Since men, by far, dominate our Congress, on both a state and national level, there has not been a strong catalyst in pushing childcare legislation and funding. And the current administration has shown no interest in supporting women on the childcare issue, even though Ivanka Trump initially indicated an interest in supporting working women. So it will be up to women to elect more women in political leadership so the lip service from all the male politicians can translate to purposeful action.

I think one should start from the premise that there is no such thing as the 'American Dream'. It's a fallacy. With about 350 million people, of course, there will be many more who attain huge or significant success. No one ever speaks about the majority who have families, raise kids, and generally do well. It's a numbers situation. There will be a few Bill Gates out there, and Zuckermans, etc. but they reside in the small percentages of every population. And, yes, the American philosophy of 'survival of the fittest' is definitely trumped by what we see in the Scandinavian countries especially in the education sector.

This is a good story, and the reaction of the professor was the human thing to do. Nonetheless, by doing this she has now made herself and the university responsible for what might happen to that child. At my university I have been instructed to not allow any unregistered person in my classroom. It's part of the sickening sue-happy society we live in.

Had this happen in 1989. I had taken one or other child in on occasion, but I was left with both and couldn't do it. I called to apologise. When i went to rebook the tutorial, the tutor's response was, "one mature student with two children is worth a dozen of these Young PISSHEADS" . The last words shouted down the corridor at the student in there before me.

So, the professor did the right thing. I am a professor (in Engineering), and I treat my students with equal grace (I fully believe) as this professor does because honest-to-god all students deserve equal opportunity to learn and my job in the classroom (and in the lab) is to bridge that gap between unequal circumstances and equal opportunity to learn. So, I find it somewhat disheartening that it became twitter famous because it indicates to me that most of my colleagues must be failing at this still (I know of a few colleagues that fail, but it must be more widespread than I thought). And, I don't just talk the talk here, I have had kids in the classroom (including my own), I have provided pay for a graduate student to take a maternity leave who still is given leeway towards working towards her degree I don't normally afford to others, I have provided nursing rooms for my students, etc. etc. and all told, these are minor things in my workload with large payback for the students.

If this existed when i was in my last semester of nursing school, perhaps i could've finished. Community colleges make their money on single parents, but offer no assistance or answers for childcare. Miss 2 classes in nursing school, you're out. After attempting 3 times, i gave up. It cost too much money. I'll try again when my children are grown. Kudos to this caring professor.

You were studying science. The professor in the story teaches family studies. Very different circumstances. That and there's no tenure offered at community colleges so the professors can't just do whatever they want in their lectures. I teach nutrition to nursing students and I gotta tell your my hands are tied by school policy. I highly doubt your professors were just being jerks. Your problem is likely with the administration. That said, I feel you. I hope you can get back into it later, especially if it's your passion.

The small picture: that professor is fabulous. No further statement is necessary. The big picture: why does our society have to be one of only a very few that refuse to enable women (or men) the childcare they need to become fully participating citizens? We have a system that can afford to create killing machines that can blow up children all over the world at the flick of a switch but can't provide health care or even drinkable water in our cities. It is time to review our priorities!

As a professor, the key is that the student communicated with the professor. I cannot count how many times a student misses a quiz or such and then weeks later they want a makeup and offer this as a reason. It is all about communication. I'm sure this student has proven herself in the class, and that is also key. It is a tragedy that we do not have free childcare on college campuses, and in general for that matter.

So true! Communication is tops. I teach at a commmunity college as well as at a private four year college. The community college offers (inexpensive) childcare, but the private college does not. I try to work with my students, but as I teach in the sciences and I'm an adjunct who obeys school policy, I can't allow kids in my lectures. Not even my own kid.

I know how it is. I was a single mom with a two-year old child and a student in the 5th year of my masters education in veterinary medicine. He had to be present from early morning like 8 am till late like 6 or 7 pm. We here not allowed to miss practice or lecture. Presence on lectures was checked at random frequency. The point was not to miss these checks. I remember on day having 3 yours of evening lecture in hygiene and asking for permission to leave the third hour as I felt really bad for letting my child alone with a babysitter. No material would be missed as there were enough books and colleagues from whom I could copy and learn the notes. I never asked before and I was always very strict in my education and always present. I was denied permission. I felt so bad, sad, disrespected and that seems so inhuman from our professor. I will never forget the pain he caused me and the senseless coldness of that person. The professor was a he.

I believe that if you look at the long run, as in the case of the Scandinavian country, you will reap the rewards in the end. This person will become someone who gives back more than she takes from her society. Great! A little understanding along the way helps so much. And it teaches your child empathy for others for later in life. The circle goes on. Sometimes we hand out too much instead of giving a small hand up when needed. What a lovely story, thank you so much for sharing. Both of you.

smh. So much for personal responsibility. Of course she's probably getting her education for free since she has a child while those of us who waited until we could handle having a child and attend to our responsibilities get to pay for everything ourselves. I'm sure the other students in class who actually paid for their education appreciate the distraction. Just another entitled single mom getting what she wants at the expense of others. Yawn. If that professor had any balls she'd tell the girl it was her decision to be a single mom and she has to deal with the consequences. That would be the true lesson to be learned from this. But no, let's just reward bad decisions while creating a distraction for everyone in class who isn't irresponsible.

Wow! Obviously you don't know what it's like to be a single parent or be raised by one. People are trying to do the best they can. There's no reason to be an ASS HOLE!

Glad I'm not taking that class. People bringing their snotty, crying brats in and messing with a student's ability to learn... why don't they have childcare on campus?

I'm a single parents with 3 girls. When I was also going to night school to get my Bachelors the teachers were very accommodating and understanding. I tried to never play the "single parent" card to often though. I was often the only Dad when it was time to go re-apply for WIC

oops- one day little Korbyn's mama can tell her that she took her to school because she was working so hard to make a better life for her. And the Professor facilitated that. What an incredible love- and life- lesson for a little girl to hear!

Aces! Kudos to both these ladies, as a single mom myself, I know how stressful it is. I WISH I could continue with studies, but, alas, in my country, even basic childcare is nonexistent unless you're really wealthy. And professors like this? Not one in a thousand over here. Go you both!
