Small Business Owner Can’t Hold Back Tears After Reading A Vile Email From A Customer
InterviewThe customer isn’t always right, especially when they choose to punish you for your good deeds. We’re all human and that means that the customers themselves aren’t angels all the time—they can be incredibly rude as well. And it’s business owners and staff members who have to absorb all of their negative emotions when they don’t like something. However, as it turns out, some customers get worked up over something as small as… a free lolly.
Australian business owner Carissa Collins, the founder of TLC Body, turned to TikTok to vent her frustration after receiving an extremely rude email from a vegan customer. Carissa packed some free lollies with their order and this angered the customer so much that they sent her a strongly worded email. It brought Carissa to tears. You can check out her full video and the customer’s email below.
Carissa, from Queensland, told me in an interview via email that she was blown away by the support that she received after her video went viral. “I have received so many positive comments and messages from people who’ve come across my video, to the point I am unable to respond to them all straight away,” she told Bored Panda. “There are the few occasional negative comments, however, if I’m honest, I was actually expecting a lot more. It’s been quite overwhelming seeing so many kind comments and people ‘sticking up for me.’ I guess it just shows how many people can relate to being on the receiving end of unreasonable customers.” Read on for the full interview, Pandas!

Carissa shared with Bored Panda that she’d never been a business owner before. “I’ve always worked for others and have never been able to respond to a customer how I felt right, until now. I chose to respond to this customer with kindness. However, I also chose to start my response to this customer by telling them that the way they worded their email was not called for, and it actually upset me,” she told me how she responded to the email.
“This is not something I would’ve been ‘able’ to write if I worked for someone else. If I wrote an email that started that way for a previous employer, I would most likely have been ‘spoken to.’ My main reason for responding to this email was because I am a small business owner, and I currently do not have reviews on my business’ Facebook page. With how this email was worded by this customer, I was worried they would then leave my business a 1-star review using quotes from their email, which stated I could not be trusted,” the businesswoman explained what exactly had her worried.
“I didn’t believe they would explain the whole experience: that a non-vegan lolly that was given with their (non-vegan) order upset them. This is also why I was quite upset in my video—I was worried about the future of my business as reviews like that: stating a business cannot be trusted, can destroy a business. This is the only reason I replied. I felt my business’ reputation was possibly at risk due to an unfair reaction to a lolly.”
I was also curious to learn about how the Covid pandemic changed how Carissa approached her business. According to her, however, her way of working for herself hasn’t changed much throughout the pandemic. Aside from a few minor hiccups here and there. “There have been the occasional delays with my suppliers, however, it has caused me to (try) and become more organized myself. Since leaving my full-time positions and now working from home, I’ve found I am more productive and complete my tasks a lot quicker than when I was in the office.”
Things turned out well, however. The businesswoman received a ton of support after her video went viral and plans to continue giving out free sweets

Carissa thought that it would be a wonderful thing to add some free lollies to all the various body product and skincare packages she sent out to customers. Personally, I feel like it’s a wonderful gesture that shows customers how much this small business appreciates them.
Even if someone isn’t a fan of lollies, they could easily ignore them or give them away to someone else. However, one particular vegan customer couldn’t stand the fact that they received free “sugary junk” with their order.
“So once again I’m in a position where I will not be buying from you again because I no longer trust your word. I don’t even eat lollies—vegan or not—what do you think you are gaining by sending someone a bit of sugary junk in the first place? I’d rather pay less for my product than get something I never asked for or wanted,” the vegan wrote in the email that brought the business owner to tears and seeking sympathy on TikTok.
Usually, lollies are made using gelatin which is made out of animal proteins, so vegans can’t eat them. However, Carissa points out in her video that “if you don’t like a lolly, don’t eat it.” Instead of sending out vile messages and complaining about free things, the customer could have simply ignored the entire situation. Instead, they chose to make a mountain out of a molehill.
“I had a stressful day, so I took the email very personally. It is also the first negative email I have received like that. I really appreciated the response online, it blew me away to be honest. I also won’t be stopping throwing in free lollies with my products, I think it is a nice touch… I guess the woman was having a bad day,” she told Daily Mail Australia.
Carissa’s video went viral, getting nearly half a million views in 3 days and racking up 59.2k likes, as well as 680 shares on the platform.
Fortunately, things ended well. In a follow-up video, the businesswoman exclaimed that she received a whole bunch of support from people who had seen her previous video. Carissa seemed extremely happy and thanked everyone for their warm wishes and orders.
Most people were very supportive of the Australian business owner
However, some people defended the customer instead and thought the businesswoman was in the wrong
I order often stuff from a online shop and the guy always puts some candy in the package. That is nice. I am diabetic but I wouldn't never ever make such a fuzz about it and complain!
She did hint that something else had been very upsetting to her on that same day.
Load More Replies...Uh, looks like there are some very important points being brought up in those last three responses posted. Seems like this was about much more than the candy, and perhaps not the first time, and it also provides the context that the owner advertises 100% vegan products then includes a non-vegan candy. These are some pretty important details to leave out! I smell a hunger for attention pity.
I looked at the site, and the only reference I see regarding animals is that the products are cruelty free and not animal tested. In this context (beauty products) cruelty free just means that they are not animal tested, not that they are vegan. Customer's fault for not knowing the difference.
Load More Replies...Someone needs to rethink the definition of "extremely rude" & "vile". This email is neither of those. They even wrote "darn you". That's not very vile. I order from a company that includes gum in every order. I don't chew gum but, you have to be a real jerk to complain about something you can easily throw away.
It is rude/vile to tell someone 'I am never using your business again because of this.' When the 'this' is something extremely benign. It doesn't matter she worded it nicely, she didn't have to say it at all. She is free to not patronize her business if she doesn't want to but when she feels the need to tell the owner the reason why she will no longer use her service, she pushes her issues on someone else in an effort to make them feel like s**t. Thats pretty rude imo. She could have easily said to her, 'really appreciate the free gesture but these are not vegan friendly unlike your products so is it possible to get a vegan friendly gift or none at all in my orders?' instead she went full nuclear and gave the lady no way to rectify anything. It was simply to make her (the vegan) feel better at the expense of someone else's feelings.
Load More Replies...What is with this trend lately of grown adults turning on their camera, first making sure it’s in the right position and has the right lighting and then start recording themselves crying like a child before uploading it to social media? I find it rather infantilising. As for the “vile” email - seriously? I was expecting it to be a lot, lot worse to cause such a reaction. Similarly, there was a story from a 30 year old woman a few months ago who turned on her camera and recorded herself crying because she was in a gym class and the instructor asked her if she was ok and keeping up (this was bullying and public shaming apparently, though recording herself sobbing and uploading it for the whole world to see was perfectly fine…)
Seriously. Major overreaction here, and more than a bit calculating.
Load More Replies...And then she went on the internet and got all the free advertisement and support and extra business created by this ridiculous story. Social media outrage over alleged customer interactions is such a lucrative and profitable business strategy now.
I find it very hard to believe that a woman who owns her own company selling health and beauty products is so triggered by one email complaining about receiving a Chupa-Chup from some vegan fanatic. Seems more likely a way to garner attention and drive traffic to her website (how many people googled TLC Body after reading this post) and/or hoping that Chupa Chup will reach out to her and her company with some offer to help - which would be a big win for her. We see this all the time now.
I don't dare eat it for allergy reasons, but the japanese guy/gal I buy model kits from always includes some little piece of some kind of Japanese candy and the gesture always makes me smile.
Going into tears over that email? seriously? yah... I'm making a "Toughen up" generalization. This email was so far from extremely rude and vial. Why is this woman getting any attention at all? pathetic
If you get that upset about someone getting upset over a lolly, there's something wrong with you too. Just as that person could ignore the lolly, you can ignore the person being upset. Also, I don't appreciate free junk that will just create waste either, especially when it doesn't even have anything to do with what I ordered, so maybe just stop?
....... especially when she admitted that "Normally emails like this wouldn't get to me...." there must be really something wrong with her, more so than with the customer.
Load More Replies...Another opportunity to trash vegans; "thank you". "Normally, emails like this wouldn't get to me...." So why this one did to get to this small business owner???????? Welcome to life, where some customers are rude or plain stupid. You make 10000 tiktoks or instagram posts, rude people still exist.
I hate getting extra things with my order. I do email and ask for them to not send things like stickers or throw glitter in it. Nicely though. I just say that as a customer I greatly prefer not receiving items that can't be recycled and will end up wasted in the trash. Then I suggest an opt out option. Honestly the email didn't seem very rude. It is customer feedback. But honestly it doesn't feel good to get something and just waste it. It is bad for the environment and is frustrating when part of the reason you placed the order was to avoid those sort of things. Like when I order zero waste products that come wrapped in plastic...drives me up the wall and completely defeats the point of my order.
The situation is described only by one side: the store owner; we did not hear the customers take, so keep it in mind before you pass the judgement.

Load More Replies...As for the woman who wrote the email, I can't imagine not buying a product because they inserted some wasteful thing I did not order. She has a tiny point, but it's not that big a deal. As for the vegan thing, sheesh, like the little free gift has to be catered to each and every customer?! How entitled. As for the business owner, I understand why she was upset. That's why I don't own a business or work in the service industry. If she lets stuff like that get to her so much, she might not do so well as a business woman. (I saw this knowing that my son's business gets complaints sometimes and they either take it into account if it's valid criticism or if it's awful, they just hope the people never come back. They can't get upset about every bad comment.)
Marnie, this business woman noted that ...normally emails like this (and I'm sure she got a lot worst ones than this one before) would not get to her.... So, why was she so upset about this particular one??????
Load More Replies...michael frizzle in the responses was way more hostile than the shared email, imo. and honestly, who gets upset about free goodies? most individuals i've ordered things from via etsy, kickstarter, etc., include a bit of candy, a free sticker or two, or something else small and surprising, and it always delights me, because they don't HAVE to do that!
The person complaining does have a point. If your advertising that your products are 100% vegan friendly, it would be a good idea to send a treat that doesn't contain animal products. Rather than get upset by the way the email was worded, treat it like constructive criticism,.
So, I sell online and this is why I don't send anything free. All that gets shipped is the product, invoice, thank you card, and care instructions. The products I make are for kids and I have huge scraps of fabric because I fussy cut everything. I had an idea to sew them into kid sized masks and send them as freebies but then I thought about antimaskers and didn't want the problems
Look at the bright side. She should be thankful that a few suckers spared her from having to deal with that bitch again. I once won a bet on a sporting event with a guy who was a real asshole. He avoided me like the plague to get out of paying me. Not having to put up with his presence was worth far more than the $50 he owed me.
Steve Wilson, you did not here the customer's side of the story, why do you call her a bitch????
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure she did this as a way to get free marketing for her products. the internet does not need to see your ridiculous tears over something so small. Grow a thicker skin. If she didn't like the lollies, don't send her any more. Can't please everyone, oh well! Customers like to complain. Carry on. No need to share this with the world and keep the tears going while you set up the camera, but again, I'm pretty sure this was about just getting her product marketed for free.
I'd be upset if I was given a Chupa Chups as well, those things are awful! (this is a joke btw, it's a f'n free piece of candy, if you don't want it just toss it or hand it to any child) (Chupa Chups really are awful though ;) )
Also: It could be an attempt of gaining sympathy for more purchases. Or she could be ultra sensitive like I am. I do not take this stuff well at all. I am fresh on meds and waiting to hear from a psychiatrist and hoping for a diagnosis for my mental health and that includes why am I so bothered by criticism. Me, I am paranoid someone poisoned it and I throw it away.
This store owner is not sensitive at all, by her own admission.
Load More Replies...Well, it's a good thing she's not a carnivore! She might be aggressive, combattive, or pushy!
She should have named the vile vegans twitter or fb handle. Vile person.
It looks like “Karen the Vegan“ did the shop owner a big favor. By being a whiny little b***h she gave the shop owner a reason to get on TikTok and say poor me. That got her the attention she wanted. People need to just really calm down in mind their own businesses.
I'm seeing the word 'humanity' a lot, and I feel that needs to be challenged. Treats, irrespective of nature or intent, should not be maligned; that's just manners. Gift horse. However, lambasting someone into tears over something SO petty and so OVERTLY innocent, qualifies as 'being a Karen'. So no, I do not believe this cuntstomer falls under humanity. She may be homo sapiens, but this act was not humane in ANY way. She is a Karen, and I will heartily endorse giving up on Karenity.
Nothanks L. Walk, once again: this tearing business owner admitted that, "Normally emails like this would not get to me....." So why was she so upset about this particular one???? It wasn't even 100% negative ( the customer noted that she "liked her products"). Secondly, you have no idea how "humanity" is treating non-human inhabitants of our planet. It's beyond description. You hear only about human, almost entirely self-inflicted, problems, which are pale in comparison to animal suffering. The link between animal cruelty and violence among humans is undeniable. There NEVER will be human rights without animal rights, period. So yes, the term 'humanity' definitely needs to be challenged, but this costumer is not reason for that.
Load More Replies...Oh, grow up. So one customer didn't appreciate your non-vegan treat (you claim your company is vegan friendly, though?) and said some snarky things in an email. And it made you CRY? How f*****g old are you? If you're that sensitive you have no business having a business.
One time I cooked a huge Xmas meal for the homeless in New Orleans. Seafood gumbo, sweet potato pie and gift bags for dog owners. I had gumbo thrown back in my face by a homeless couple who were upset it wasn't vegan and called me an asshole and and inconsiderate bitch because I didn't consider that they might be vegan. I made 55 meals... all were handed out and every single person besides them was beyond grateful. Some were brought to tears over the gesture which then made me blubber like a baby. But I was so happy that everyone was so grateful and then I had 2 meals left and approached the couple and I wish I hadn't. They literally threw scalding hot gumbo all over me and my dog and screamed at me ... not to mention the fact that they wasted food that someone else would have gladly eaten. But it Alamo made me never do this again. Luckily people came to my defense and it changed my mind and now this is something I do every year. But
Of course I'm considerate over people not eating meat. I really don't eat meat all that often myself. But it's New Orleans and it's what is the norm. Not to mention I wanted to ensure the meals would have enough protein and nutrients since these folks don't always have a choice on eating healthy and balanced meals. The gumbo was actually made with chicken, shrimp and crab and I added bone broth and a whole bunch of fiber rich foods. My whole idea was based on what's easiest for people to eat and what would be healthiest. Some homeless don't have teeth or have dental issues so I wanted to make sure it was something everyone could eat that wouldn't go bad right away and could be eaten hot or cold and could give these folks a couple days worth of food. But of course I was the asshole for thinking about what would be best for people who need extra vitamins and minerals and may not have the best dental hygiene it really messed with me.
Load More Replies...OK. The email might have been sour and overreacting. But to go cry on social media about it??? Tssssss. That said, I do agree that cheap nasty candy migh not be the best thing to send as a present while running a "conscious" web shop.
She needs to learn to take one on the chin if she's going to be in business. seriously, crying over that? Gross, grow up and grow a pair 🙄
"So once again...". I wonder how many times this particular customer was upset to the point of NEVER BUYING YOUR PRODUCT AGAIN!? Not to minimize the owners reaction but I read this particular as an attempt to get something for free. I'd be willing to bet that this particular reviewer had never bought anything from the owner in the past.
Crazy lady making a mountain out of a mole hill. Since sweets are involved, I guess ant hill would be more apt. No loss there TBH.
At some point, you are a customer too, so you are dickhead also, right, David?

I was expecting much more vile? I mean, yeah, it was a bummer of a read, but if you're an owner of a business, you're going to get criticism much worse than that. Plus, as some of the people noted, she sells vegan products but throws in a candy that is not, that would be perplexing to me as well. But then again, maybe this is more about PR than anything else?
I'm diabetic, and I would LOVE a free lolly! Always remember, for every person who stops buying from you, there will be 20 more to take their place. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
This is so ridiculous. Don't want the candy? Throw it out! Get a crappy email? Don't cry in public about it! Move on. Life is too short and there are bigger problems. P.S. Chupa Cups are the best! Vegan lady doesn't know what she's missing.
This is so ridiculous. Don't like how other people present their problems? Don't comment on Bored Panda about it! Move on. Life is too short and there are bigger problems. PS Do you see how policing what other people do is annoying and not helpful?

DarkAngelNic, there aren't that many nice things done, especially by businesses, they are done to attract customers.
Load More Replies...The person was a jerk. I would react like the owner myself, but not being in the position I can see it objectively. And I could answer, even if it takes a day, "thank you for the insight. While I was spreading joy, I did not realize this point of view. I will consider this moving on. Or, in the future I can be sure to note this on your order." Then never sell to them again if they declins. If they return and arr still snotty "I took your perspective in consideration and have decided to go against it. I am sorry to have lost a customer but I have to go with majority and I have not received any other complaints."
So those people shouldn't eat it? I really don't understand the problem. These are ADULTS who are, presumably, aware of their own dietary requirements. Don't want or can't eat the lolly? Throw it away. Takes far less energy than writing an angry email that makes you look immature. It's always bloody vegans, too.

Load More Replies...I think that they BOTH need to just hold hands and ju-.....call a therapist.
Load More Replies...This is why the world has a shortage of nice people. People try to do something nice and c***s like this make it so they do not want go out of their way to be kind again.
