Couple Accuses Guest Of Making Political Statement At Their Wedding For Attention, She Asks If She’s Wrong

Many weddings have a dress code. Usually, it’s black tie or formal attire, and many people agree that violating that etiquette would be bad. In fact, 79% of Americans say that showing up in casual attire would almost always be inappropriate. When it’s a destination wedding, the dress code might be even more important.

For this couple, it was certainly so, as they reprimanded one of their friends about her body hair. Since the event would take place at the beach, the woman was asked to shave her armpit hair, as it would distract other guests. When she stood her ground, the couple got mad, calling her out for doing this as some feminist protest, even though she said she kept her armpit hair for other reasons.

Removing body hair is still deemed the norm for women to appear feminine

Image credits: cottonbro studio/Pexels (not the actual photo)

Women’s body hair is quite a contentious topic. Some people believe that it’s unfeminine and unwomanly to walk around with their pit hair out. Others, however, believe that women, just like men, have body hair and should be allowed to choose whether to keep it or remove it.

The public opinion on this matter tends to steer away from favoring women. A 2016 YouGov poll showed that 70% of Americans believe that a “hairy woman” is a bad thing. A “hairy man,” on the other hand, is actually perceived as a good thing; only 24% of the poll respondents said it’s bad for men to be hairy, 29% said it was a good thing, and 47% weren’t sure.

Interestingly, people’s attitudes also greatly differ depending on how old they are. Young people are more inclined to think that both men and women should remove their body hair. However, there is a discrepancy when it comes to actually following through.

Although 46% of American men aged 18 to 29 believe they should remove their body hair, only 37% actually do it. For women, it’s the opposite: 72% of young American women do remove their body hair, but only 56% believe that they should.

Hairy armpits can trigger body odor more easily

The author explained her reasoning for keeping her armpit hair by saying that it helps her avoid sweating off deodorant and antiperspirant. It’s all personal preference, of course, but most experts say that antiperspirant works better when applied to clean-shaven skin, especially before going to bed.

For people who struggle with body odor, experts advise using antiperspirants. Unlike deodorants, antiperspirants reduce sweating by pulling it back into our sweat glands. When our bodies receive a signal that our sweat glands are full, they decrease sweat production.

When there’s hair, armpit sweat is more likely to give off a bad smell. Generally, sweat smells when it comes into contact with the bacteria on our skin or hair and is basically odorless by itself. One study even found that removing armpit hair is the most effective way of reducing body odor. That’s why experts also advise using antibacterial soap and wearing clothes that are loose and made from natural fibers.

However, contrary to popular belief, not shaving your armpit hair is not unhygienic. If a person showers regularly and applies deodorant, they’re just as clean as a person with no armpit hair. As Shani Francis, MD, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, explains, “cutting the hair only removes, let’s say, the ‘house’ for the bacteria. If you have no armpit hair but don’t wash your armpits, you’re still going to have odor.”

Some antiperspirants that include deodorants can mask the smell, but only antiperspirants can reduce the amount of sweat that our bodies produce. When armpit hair is trimmed, shaved, waxed, or otherwise removed, antiperspirant reaches our sweat glands more easily. So, when applied to hairless armpits, antiperspirant is more likely to be effective.

Sometimes, it might have no effect on how much or why we sweat. Some people might have hyperhidrosis, a.k.a. excessive sweating. That’s a condition for people to figure out with their doctors. Still, ultimately, removing body hair is a personal preference, and no one should feel pressured to do it.

Stop politicising women's choice to have their natural body hair. I sniggered a bit when my ex got together with newb and she does not shave. But since then I rarely shave and actually I sweat less it seems. How about just trimming and then dyeing them a matching colour to your outfit. As someone said, if armpit hair is going to be the centre of the wedding, those people really need to get a life. And that includes the guests who would be clutching everything in sight. Get some smelling salts for those who might swoon at the sight of natural body hair. Gsus.

Who would be too distracted at a wedding byy a woman's underarms? That sounds like an odd f****h to me. But it doesn't matter because OPs friends have made the point that they think she's disgusting, so I'd say go to Mexico, enjoy the free booze and the sunshine and then distance yourself . OP is NTA and the people (eg: this supposed friend and her fiancée) that actually give a sh‍it about this need to get a life and grow up. What's next, are you going to ask a woman to hide her t‍its because they're 'gross'? They're natural. (Edit: Unless your surname is 'Kardashian'). As is the body hair.

This is going to make me lose it one day. I don't shave either because of skin sensitivity and just general apathy towards body hair. I sometimes shave the dakr hair on my shin because they get sharp and annoy my skin and sometimes I shave my legs because I love the feeling of clothes swishing against freshly shaved legs. All of these things I do for me. The rest of the world can worry about their own bodies and stop giving a f**k about mine, please. But it's pretty often people get surprised to see unshaven pits and act like I'm supposed to try and hide them? It's just haaaaair.

I hate the color navy blu, I find bushy armpit hair disgusting, I can't understand why some people have super short fringes BUT I would never ever tell anyone to shave/cut their hair differently/stop wearing blue cause it's not my place no matter what the situation/event. On the other hand if you are invited to a wedding that has a dress code, you either follow it to the T or don't go and not start making it weird/about you.

I've shaved my armpits ten times max in my life. It's not that much of a thing here, and I don't shave my legs, either (pincers to single, sstubborn hairs around my mouth and chin, though, because the bother ME). OP also said she got rashes. I don't think fiery or even bloodied red armpits are that much more attractive. To avoid conflict I'd wear something with (short) sleeves for the formal parts of the wedding. The informal parts don't require concessions anyway. It's ridiculous to ask someone to shave because your destination wedding sports a swimming pool where guests might be seen letting their (HA!) hair down - does the couple expect everyone they invited to be in tuxes and ball gowns, primped and coiffed 24/7??

Seems like people here are pretty much in agreement that she should do as she likes, but I'd still like to bring up a point against the people saying YTA because "it's just one day" or similar sentiments. As someone who, like OP, has sensory issues around touch aka sensitive skin, it's very much not just a one-day thing. It's hella distracting, near-painful, for several days as it grows back. Especially if you get razor rash on top of that.

People seriously get crazy when it comes to weddings. It makes so much more sense to go to the courthouse and get it over with and then have a big party. No one would even think about arm pit hair if it was just about the celebration. No one cares about arm pit hair, anyway

NTA, but I also think that this is a situation where OP may want to decide whether it's worth the battle. If she thinks it is, then she should do what she wants, but understand that this might cause a dent in her relationship with her friends. I don't think they are in the right, but it's possible to not be an a*****e and still lose friends. I'm also a woman, and I also don't usually shave. What's likely more controversial is I don't wear bras outside of work. But if it was to someone else's wedding or someone's birthday party, I would probably wear a bra if I knew me not wearing one bothered them because it would be more important to me to make their day pleasant. I'd see it as a minor enough issue that I could just suck it up. Likewise, if shaving was that big a deal, I'd just shave. It grows back. But again, it's all based on what OP views as more important.

I personally think armpit hair is unsightly and pretty gross. NOTHING to do with gender. I think as long as you are wearing sleeves it's fine not to shave. But I don't like seeing men OR women in sleeveless garments if they haven't shaved their pits. Reminds me of the old beer-bellied slob in a stained, wife-beater undershirt with hair peeking out all over, including all over their back and their pants showing their b**t crack. Just gross. But if no one sees it, then it's just not an issue for either gender. Why not just wear clothing with a little sleeve, so no one can tell?

Regardless of gender, I don't want to see hairy pits at a formal event. Shave, don't shave, whatever. But if it is a formal event and you have hairy pits, you wear clothing that covers them. Courtesy and hygiene. I have no problem with my sister not shaving her pits. I would have many issues if she didn't shave them, wore a strapless dress and then reached over food at a buffet. Ditto for any guy in a tank top.

As for the 'natural body hair', as someone who grew up in Germany in the 80ies I am telling you, please trim. Having half of your bush outside the swimsuit or sticking out from your underarms is pretty gross, no matter the gender. Same with a beard, well groomed does not include the 'wild man from the mountain' look. Shaving however is a personal choice.

I agree, although clearly many do not (your downvoters). It's your personal choice to leave your body hair untrimmed if you want to, it's equally my right to find it unattractive, or worse, especially if you deliberately waft it in my face like the picture used on this article. I don't agree that the bride should ban it, but the OP could very easily just have said they wouldn't wear something strappy, rendering their choice irrelevant and private.

Her rationale makes zero sense. Someone who would purposely grow out their hair should know that having more hair attracts more bacteria and causes more odor. Having it shaved, or at least almost shaved, would help keep sweat and odor away. Not to mention adding antiperspirant.

So would you be okay if the bride told all her guests they could only have their hair a certain length/colour/style? Could only wear a certain style/colour to the wedding? Where do you draw the line?

Weddings suck. I'd skip it and save the expense for a vacation I'd actually enjoy.

Trimming should be fine. Anyone making a fuss about it has their own issues and that's not on you.

Armpit hair on women doesn't do it for me but if that's a stipulation for her attendance I'd say don't bother going, there are far more important things going on in this world.

There's nothing unhygienic about hair. Just be clean.
