In-Ear Device That Translates Foreign Languages In Real Time
1.2Mviews
Most of us have found ourselves in the awkward situation of trying to communicate in a foreign language. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s embarrassing. And sometimes it’s downright disastrous. But thanks to a new translation device that easily fits into your ear, the days of struggling to speak the local lingo might soon be a thing of the past.
The device is called The Pilot translator system and Waverly Labs is the company behind this brilliantly simple yet potentially groundbreaking ear translator idea. When it hits the shelves in September, the system will allow the wearer to understand one of several foreign languages through real-time in-ear translation. A handy real-time translator app will allow you to toggle through the languages you want, and the selection includes French, Spanish, Italian, and English. It’ll retail for $129, and you can pre-order your own translator device here. Or you can just keep talking to people really loudly and slowly in English. Good luck with that.
More info on this ingenious language translator device: Waverly Labs (h/t)
The gadget comprises two earpieces that easily fit into your ears
It will allow real-time in-ear translations in French, Spanish, Italian, and English
“The Pilot” will hit the shelves in September and retail for $129
The device is said to translate speech like the Babelfish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
A handy app will allow you to toggle through the languages you want
The creator says he came up with the idea when he met a French girl. Here’s how it works in action:

Hope they do a yorkshire one soon as our lass dunt av a clue wot im on bout half the time
Gi'oer, ya daft ha'pporth.
I dinna gi' a damn.
Will it translate Yorkshire to Lancashire and reverse without starting a civil war is what is more important.
a pricey addition to a trip though... might look weird too lol. i found a $1 app that you can kinda achieve the same results with. can find it at www.tripicons.com
Spot on!
Start earning from home and get a weekly check by completing various tasks you can do from your pc or laptop. I do this as a side job for 30 min/day, 5 days each week and I receive an extra thousand dollar each week. Of course, the more you work, more you will earn. Someone might find it helpful ----> paynote90.com
yep
I do think that we have a lot of un-documented cultural slangs in languages, and it is important to learn them, however I think this a very wonderful idea, and piece of kit for any traveler. How it will pick up some crazy accents when siri can barely understand "send a text to bob" I don't know.
That's a cheap, limited, cloud-based solution. A local solution would be much better.
I could make something similar and it wouldnt be too hard. Heres what id do, use some of the very good Speech to text programs avaliable out there to translate into text eg (dragon naturally speaking) and then use the text in a translator, and have the computer read back the translated string. This would not be fully local, but would safice for a solution to this problem
Lol you think Apple's algorithm is cheaper than this imaginary kickstarter? You think a dedicated language detection server is cheaper than an in ear local translation? A local solution could only be better if some kind of non-existent technology were to suddenly appear in the form of an ear bud, not just some earbud bluetooth link to google's translation API. This will be no more accurate or powerful than whatever API they are pulling the translations from, it's all theoretical on their kickstarter, this tech does not exist and once the funding is fulfilled, prepare to hear about how the millions of backers money has been spent on personal finances and the product can't be delivered as promised. You literally have no idea what you're talking about
Again, Star Trek predicts the future...And we're ahead of schedule!
And the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy used one too! So long and thanks for all the Fish!
All we have to do now is bend billions of light years of space like one would bend a piece of paper, and I'll be French kissing both Ahura and Deanna Troy. I would be going where no man has gone before.
Took the words right out of my mouth !
And here is the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7B3Ypqpxh0
This was about 25 years after Star Trek first used Universal Translators.
Star Trek didn't predict anything. It inspired people to recreate the tech they liked as a child.
Star Trek was a TV show that showed us a possible future and advances humans may make in technology. So yeah, it did predict lots of stuff we are now realizing. Translators and tablets are just two items.
Star Trek failed to predict the internet...
What do you think the ship's computer was? "Computer, play Beethoven's Fifth" "Computer, calculate the distance between planet A and planet B." "Computer, list all known mentions of the word avocado in Medieval Klingon Literature." And so on...
The internet was already a footnote in history in the Star Trek timeline...
Hopefully, it's not like google translate.
...or bing!
Babel fish "The Babel fish is small, yellow, leech-like, and probably the oddest thing in the universe. It feeds on brain wave energy, absorbing all unconscious frequencies and then excreting telepathically a matrix formed from the conscious frequencies and nerve signals picked up from the speech centres of the brain, the practical upshot of which is that if you stick one in your ear, you can instantly understand anything said to you in any form of language: the speech you hear decodes the brain wave matrix."[7] It is a universal translator that neatly crosses the language divide between any species. The book points out that the Babel fish could not possibly have developed naturally, and therefore it both proves and disproves the existence of God:
You've GOT to be autistic. If not, then your parents kept you chained in room, and you've never actually interacted with REAL people (typing c**p here is NOT 'real' - it's actually VERY...sad.) Just as William Shatner said in an early, and very well-known SNL skit, which takes place at a Star Trek convention, after politely listening for a few minutes, he's hit by the inanity, and says, 'habe any of you ever kissed a girl?!?' Humour aside, I've come across a few like you, and there's NO way you're not - maybe you've not been diagnosed, but you ARE (and NOT that 'a*s-burger' b******t, which isn't anything more than shy, loner-type kids, and foolish parents, who think there's 'something wrong' with them 🤬) autistic. Not trying to be 'mean' to you, but, you're not 'connected' correctly . Seeing a professional could only help you. Go to: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbdd/autism/treatment.html.
I hope the translations are correct. Ever try to translate something through an online translator when you know the other language fairly well? They mess up almost every time.
Hopefully upgrades will include Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Portugese, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic. And for the Trekkies, Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, and Ferengi. ????
Yes. A universal translator.
Arabic is language? West Africa Arabic? Arabic is one of oldest ancient language
It is still widely spoken in the Middle East and Northern Africa. It's an official language in the United Nations.
He must really like that girl.
Stop complaining dudes, this is awesome !!
devices cant even handle voice recognition accurately yet
Douglas Adams where ever you are you must have a smile on your face.
The hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy, that's where the idea really came from,...
Try Star Trek.
I hope them make it work with hearing aids!
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bable fish.
How soon will be available for Chinese? My wife and her family are from China and I am still trying to learn Chinese. Even though my wife and I can understand each other at times it would be helpful to have this device.
I'll believe it when I see it go live.
I'm not aware such an app exist on your phone (does it?)...and yet a full apparatus should be functional in September? I'd like to test it before believing it!
I have a translator on my phone!
This is awesome and a functional leap forward. For the naysayers: Didn’t the internet reduce the need for libraries? Cars for horse and buggy? Laundry machine for the bucket and scrub board? Why would you stand in the way of real progress? How can you ignore the emotion in the French woman's voice when she is able to communicate real time with him? Pssshhhhh You guys enjoy your 'old' ways. I'll take Tesla autos, The Pilot, and any other electro enhancements coming down the pike 8)
I hope you never pick up criminal charges in a foreign country. You'll be crying for an "old style" human interpreter.
How can i get it?
how i buy this device .
talk shit now pedicure bitches!!!
Talk shit about me at the nail salon now
Amazing!
interesting, but this is only the first start. They need to put more words/slang on it. Hopefully more languages available in 1 or 2 years
Plenty of apps available for free that do this with your phone. And you're not running around with huge earpieces in all day
I'm French native... that one simple sentence is wrong, basically it says "Can you me hear in French" (rather than "Can you hear me in French"), which is exactly what Google Translate gives when you type it in. It's hundreds of dollars for a bluetooth earpiece that streams free software.
Tonight my girlfriend celebrates with her classmates, her BA in French. It makes me sad, I've been to many countries and have met many people here from other places and while we did not have a language in common, we always found a way to communicate, like flirting, so much will be missed or never known is this lazy, not so brave new world.
I am about to go to school for four years to learn japanese and french. It will be disappointing to know that people won't be learning anymore, just handed devices.
Yes, and it was terrible when calculators were invented, so people would no longer learn math. Or so you said at the time. These devices are very poor at Japanese, or most anything but French, Spanish, and Italian, though they will get better fast. They are not meant for technical translation, just simple everyday conversation, such as for travelers. The main difference between this device and what's available now for phones is that wires aren't necessary for the earbuds, but even that's possible with other bluetooth devices. In your studies, keep in mind that spoken Japanese is relatively easy, but reading and writing it is very hard and something computers won't be doing well for awhile yet.
Sign me up and take my money please. I'm hoping they do Chinese, Korean and Russian in the future.
Thai also.
ddd
I’m writing from the 'future' - the future of this in-ear translator press release, and most of the comments. FYI; the company which was - in '6 months' (ahead - from YOUR time, that is) relaxing this device is GONE. Their website - only came be found using the 'WayBack Machine' (the website I'm referring to, and NOT Mr Peabody and his boy, Sherman 😉). I DO know that there (currently - 2022) ARE somewhat similair- devices, though they each cost $99, and the reason I say 'eaxh' is that unlike this one, you can't be in a room with people, speaking various languages to you (such as you, taking to a Frenchman, a woman from Spain, and a girl from Iceland) and you understanding them ALL - at once. The actual devices are only available in ONE language, so, to be able to accomplish the examp,e I gave, you'd have to purchase THREE (3),- one with EACH SINGLE language, and somehow put into your ear the correctly neededlanguafe right before the spoke.
So I what happened to this?
what is the time delay? how accurate it will be? how many languages?
There needs to be a devise as small as a earbud that translates without an app or having to have a phone
This is America, Get it why you CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two years later and still not available.
This is a question..... does anyone know if you can translate Japanese and have you tried it?
I want to buy it right now
I think badly needed by police and military forces in today's globalized world to reduce random, mistaken and inaccurate arrests of innocent civilians in war zones. Currently up to 90% of detentions bear little intel value and only aggravate tensions between peacekeeping forces and general populace. Culture, religious and language gaps exacerbate these further.
ewde
I want buy this device
Where can u buy it i dont see it anywhere in the page
I want one.
It would be great if this would be available in Portuguese as well.
Need it for Japanese also
Need to have one for Japanese also
I have a daughter-in-law from Germany - she speaks German, Spanish, French, English and an ancient language. She teaches Spanish with a German accent (my son's joke) They visit Germany every two years and her parents will come often after retirement. Her mother speaks broken English trying hard but her father and sister do not. OKAY, is there any chance you can add German to your device? My son, husband and I need it too. My father was the son of a composer from the city of Lichtenstein who died in the US in 1924 - Dad spoke nothing but German until age 18 and taught hs German for many years. Thanks
Or Just learn the language you retard. You don't need earphones to directly talk to people in real life in front of you.
Where can i buy this item
Where can i buy this and how .I could not find the site that sale it.Can anyone provide me some suggestion plz
The question now is how do we speak back in the persons language so they understand us
It's really amazing what our gadgets can do. If you are looking for devices, it is an outstanding idea to have a look at http://cheapgadgetsstore.com/
I love this idea, my girlfriend who speak Spanish and obviously I don't, and she has complained About the current translators are use, I'm hoping this one will be better
Sounds brilliant
Will you be and my additional languages
That pretty girl doesn't need a translator. One flash of those sparkling eyes and I get the message right off.
I'd love one so I could hear at the nail bar what is being said !!
Hell, if you can't understand the language in the first place how are you going to answer back?
Where can you buy?
Star Trek era, hello :)
Does this work? Is it in Indonesian? How do I get it posted to Bali?
I'm deaf in one ear I wonder if it will work with 1?
my son says what is the point of travelling if you cannot b ebothered to learn the language and you are just going to cheat. Fair point, well presented :)
If they could do one that worked on Bulgaria i would love it. Been living here for over 8 years and my language skills are nonexistent and i hate it because they are so friendly and helpful and deserve something better than me trying to blunder my way through a miming session.
Great. I wish to learn Spanish and relearn French!
I would love to try thi our but can you just use one and understand the other people if they dint have one
WELL I GUESS EVERYONE NEEDS ONE OF THESE I MEAN FOR REAL!!! NO JOKING!!!
Great! Next we need the Google glass to read and translate signs and documents.
Please please add Arabic
If let say i want to buy, where can i get it? Thanks
Luciferian pyramid symbology, removing language barriers, because you know...New Babylon and shit. Fuck the NWO.
WHEN WILL AFRICAN LANGUAGES BE AVAILABLE?
When might they add Japanese?
When will they add Japanese?
Japanese language pls
This is amazing. I would like one of these.
vv
i need one for russian?? or ukrainian?
I do not know if I want text similar to hear the that Google translator spits. Text above was translated (twice) by Google Translator.
At least that text was supposed to be above the next but hard enter doesn't seem to work here. Sorry for that.
What would the price on something like that be?
French Speaker-Pleased to meet you-Translation-you rocket weeds complete sea must relief bother tarpaulin with nebula weather.
Hope they can provide a global translator for everybody. Just like how Transglobal (transglobalinc.com) offers language translation in different country.
I need this for Hindi. Is it possible?
Needs to be in Polish to
I like the concept. Although I don't know yet if this really is going to work like it has been advertised, my optimistic side says this is a great idea and gadget and imagine the possibilities in the International dating arena, which I think the inventor has already hit upon that, but I REALLY am hoping that the company is able to come up with a Russian version SOON as it is the dominant language in number of countries and could really be put to use quickly! dd06-574e3...770dc2.jpg
Great idea, but we're not there yet. As anyone who has used Babelfish or Google Translate can tell you. Would be fun though, and would certainly lead to some interesting scenarios. "Excuse me officer, but I have sauerkraut in my leiderhosen."
or just..you know... learn the fucking language?
My idea from 2011 that I mentioned, I wrote it down and mailed it to myself, it has not been opened since. I was actually waiting to finish school to complete the patenting process but I am glad that someone has brought it to the light. This will be a huge blessing to others.
This is an amazing idea. I had a similar idea in 2011 that I would live to discuss with you guys, it will enhance the features or actually add more to it.
funny they ear translator is like from anime i watch that year old
This will show everyone at the board meeting you are less educated than the rest, and, more importantly, not respectful enough to communicate with me in my native tongue.
I hope German language will be included since it is one of the most important language used in business... =)
I'm gobsmacked! (And I'm not even British!) What a great piece of equipment! I live in a predominantly Spanish-speaking area and I'm just sure they're talking about me, with no way to prove it! Ha ha!
Google translate doesn't work? Why would this?
Lies don´t travel far.
There have been phone apps that do that for a few years now that are not as expensive. Why add a piece of equipment in your ear when your phone can do it all just by speaking into it. Not ground breaking at all.
Can this guy please invent something to translate what my wife says!
I am a Canadian living in Mexico. As I'm aging I find it more difficult to retain any Spanish. I definitely want one of these...it would help me soooo much.....buying groceries.... No more charades! Talking to the Mexican people. It may even help me to retain more Spanish. I can't wait for them to come out. Do you get two for $129.? Cause, you pretty much need two, right. Can I be he first to place an order or do I have to wait till September?
Post em português - http://www.blogpc.net.br/2016/05/fone-de-ouvido-inteligente-que-traduz-conversas-em-tempo-real.html
This will be the next big Thing.
What if you have hearing aids? Does it have an FM feed?
Now I can use it during sex with my foreigne booty call
I think this awesome and is going to be very successful. It will be interesting to see how this evolves with the future models.
So 2 comes with the $129.00 cost? Is this for each person to wear one or are both ear pieces for 1 person? If this is 1 earpiece for 2 people then this is great! We have a foster son with his fathers family being Hispanic and we cannot communicate with them. Please let me know! And I'm not familiar with the way these comments work...will I be notified when people respond?
Whatever efforts are made to close the language gap can only help progress positive and unified globalization. My organization's mission is to help artists exhibition internationally. So this will speed things up. We're headed to Latin America next year. Right now I'm in Italy. Would love to be able to communicate more easily for next year's exhibition!
i think it is a hoax
Will it translate Canadian to English?
Add in armanian arabic Chinese Japanese Russian and all the languages and impress me too
I think that you should call it an in ear interpreter. Interpreting is for the spoken word. Translation is for the written word. There is a whole profession for this and that is the distinction they use.
BLACK AMERICA 2016.... YOU HAVE MY WORD....THEY WON'T GET AWAY WITH IT WITHOUT A FIGHT.....because I suspect foul play.... copyright infringement...and I am all over it. The above or below illustration I strongly suspect is copyright infringement from our copyrighted book Undercover Smart published in 2006 by Author house publishing whereas Babel fish includes the exact ,same and identical idea, concept and form of expression that their babal fish clone is based on. . This story will not end as another idea stolen from the black man. UNDERCOVER SMART - ISBN # 1-4208-7255-9 - PAGE 105.
Please add Dutch and German
Can it translate in German?
why not also in German? not just in the languages learned in America.
I just saw this featured on Good Morning America. It's a brilliant idea but, they said it would cost $300.
It's gonna be a google translate repeat all over again
what about swedish
Health protection covers should be added for business purposes. This can help businesses having to lose business because not understanding the language. This is brilliant!!
Health protection covers should be developed for business use. This can help so much face to face from car dealers to bank tellers...where no one is turned away. Brilliant invention !
Don't get me wrong, Hitchhiker's is a great book and were at least decent shows, but I'm surprised they didn't make a Star Trek reference to this. This must have been written in the UK, where the book and first show was made.
Amazing idea!! Will they offer more languages in the future as an upgrade?
We can use this in my office. Please contact me privately.
I would like to pre-order.... May I?
I'm surprised they didn't make reference to the Star Trek universal communicator. Don't get me wrong, Hitchhiker's is a great book and shows, but more people know about Star Trek than that.
You need to call it the Babel Fish!
When will it be available in Arabic languages? Will there ever be one to translate what I say in English to another language or will others just have to have the Pilot to understand me?
We need it in Arabic
This is really cool but it probably isn't perfect yet. For once, both people have to wear it. If you're in a busy place it probably won't work. It can help you understand, but speaking is different and it can't help you speak back (I'm saying this assuming that you're the only one wearing them in a foreign country.) Also, everything is delayed so conversation would be much slower. Could it recognize different dialects of a language? Slang? New words? Finally, I'd probably end up losing those. I already lose my headphones on a wire. Other than that, I think it's a really handy device that could be useful if improved. Hopefully it's not like google translate, where some translations are incorrect.
I am like: Is this true! What a great gadget for travelers. I am keen to use one of them! Like the French girl in the story I have felt lost several times. One that I vividly recollect is at Pannonhalma Abbey in Hungary.
Is this going to be a Google Translate Disaster all stuck in your ears? I hope not. Because i think every language has their own unique slang that makes the sentences hard/impossible to translate without sounding weird or losing the intended meaning. If the team behind pilot can nab this down and able to accurately tackle all sorts of non-official but commonly used slang/culturally constructed sentences then i think Pilot is really going to be a big thing.
Wish they did this in German. My partner's family only speak German
Wish they did this in German! My partner's family only speak German
Do people have their own or do you share the other one wherever you go? Or duo they get the app and buy their own? You can't swap earwax.
This is awesome.however, do I have to clean the piece for every user?
Simpky put it in your mouth and suck.
I'm so excited to get one!! I CAN'T WAIT! I have a translator on my phone too, but this is a better way to talk in real rime.
I go to a lot of foreign films with subtitles I wonder if this device will work I could actually understand the movie instead of reading the movie
I think this is a wonderful concept. I host many cultural exchange students, Japan every year, so this is a awesome thing for people like me and my family helping to break the language barrier.
Got to have one
hang on a moment! we can hear a traslated version of the language spoken by the other person, and yet we still speak our language?! talk about half-measures! :P there needs to be a device to go with this that translates our language to theirs. that or we'd need to buy two or more to communicate with another.
Seems like a great idea but if it's anything like Google translate it won't be 100% accurate. And if it's off by even 10% it could seriously screw up the translation. I've found that out the hard way with Google Translate which has made some major error which led to misunderstanding. Fortunately, I'm able to read the language I'm translating from (Spanish) and I can often figure out the errors.
https://youtu.be/wT1A9D7ylug
I love this device idea but wonder if you can use it without a cell phone. Can you use it with a PC? I do not have a cell phone or smartphone.
I love this. I not have a cell phone, does it work on a PC? Do you have to have a cell phone or smart phone to use it? I think this is an incredibly useful device!
I wouldn't want to just walk around with those in my ears. I'm sorry, the colours are just ridiculous. For better sales, they should come in
*continued. A clear version. Just walking around with a bright red earpiece would probably look completely and totally ridiculous. No thanks
copy of clik I will say clik-kicks...63-png.jpg
copy of clik https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEQK_urrGZs
Sabai sabai!
Sawatdee Khap?
You'll still be stuck trying to speak the language unless you have a spare device you can lend.
this could be cool
Could have saved Cheryl Fernandez Versini`s marriage :D
And what do you do if you're traveling without your "French girl"? Ask everyone you need to talk to to stick something in their ear? Not to mention that if the device translates like Google translate, then it has a LONG way to go to produce colloquial or even understandable translation beyond extremely basic phrases . . ..

So you can understand a foreign language eh? So how the hell do you reply back, if you don't speak the language? Need more work I think.....
I'm moving to Spain very soon and this would be a great bit of kit to have at hand
It will work as well as speech to text or any other system that uses spoken commands. It will have trouble with accents, speech problems, or unusual pronunciations. You will have to speak, clearly, in textbook language, or it will fail. Or spend days "calibrating" it
I live and work in NATO and wish i had something like this as nearly everyone around me speaks some other language.
They need to come in pairs, to begin with.
How does it deal with 3 simultaneous conversations between 5 people, as usually happens in France?
Please let me know when you have on for Russian. My in laws are Russian and they so want to talk with me and me with them. I would gladly pay the $129 just to be able to speak with them. They are both in the 70's and I don't know how much longer they will be with us. Thank you so much for this. I have been working on the idea for about a year now and you beat me to it. Thanks. Ken Drake.
It doesn't say anything about helping you come up with a response, though, to what is said to you, so you might still have trouble communicating.
I woul definitely buy 2 if you make it ti translate Greek. My inkaws are Greek and it woul make my life SOOOOO much easier to gave this!!
Greek please! !
Will you be making one to translate Greek?? I would most definitely buy 2 if you did. Please!!!
To bad they don't do German.
Man, if this thing is real then I hope it's better than Google Translate.
Sure you can understand it but what happens when you can't respond due to the fact you can't speak it
They need one that also does other languages, such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, both Mandarin and Cantonese, Hindi, and other Asian languages!
Es ist im Prinzip nichts anderes als ein Kopfhörer. Die Übersetzung ist fast das selbe wie Google Translate. Der einzige Vorteil ist, dass man das Smartphone nicht mehr direkt braucht, um den sprechenden Gesprächspartner zu übersetzen. Revolutionär wäre, wenn es die Übersetzung direkt im Kopf automatisch stattfindet, ohne Sprachkenntnisse. Ansonsten nichts neues.
I NEED it to translate Chinese & Vietnamese, PLEASE!
I need it to translate Chinese & Vietnamese, PLEASE!
Amazing invent
A very handy tool for people visiting or holidaying abroard, voted way up, if it works I will buy a couple of pairs for me and my Wife.
They should be in Arabic Chinese Japanese german Russian too
My wife is Thai, and despite several years spent there, I cannot translate very much of this. I hope that a number of languages could be used in the future with this!
will it be able to translate Urdu? Afrikaans?
its a wonderful idea, assuming it works as advertised.
I'll go for German, Cantonese, and Japanese... Spanish is great... But I understand enough of it to get the gist of what people are saying. I've studied Latin, and it gives me a head start to understanding the Romance languages.
A universal translator. Good work Gene Roddenberry!
Wellp, there goes my college major. Thanks, fam.
pati ngata esel mi???
Japanese please, this is a cool idea, very skeptical of it though, since Google translate doesn't work correctly except about 20% of the time
Guaranteed not to work in a crowded room with common vernacular.
I guarantee it won't work in everyday vernacular in a crowded room.
Please tell me this isnt just a troll. That diagram looks alot like a babble fish from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
Curious as to why they dont translate an Asian language... I wonder if the device will still work if they have updates or add-ons for the app with new languages in the future...
Curious as to why it doesnt translate any Asian languages... I hope the device will be able to work if they can update or have add ons for the app.
I'm a little creeped out by the idea of someone giving me one of them to put in my ear when I don't know who else's ear it's been in before me. I mean, they come in pairs so you can have whoever you want to talk to wear one, too, which logically means you get it back from them at some point and then give it to someone else? Unless it comes with some sort of cleaning/sanitizing/disinfecting device, I'd be way too squicked out to buy one. OR to use one someone handed me. Ick.
Actually, I noticed documentary and news reporters arlready use a similar device, which is hygenically more acceptable.
Or maybe I misunderstood. LOL
There should be half dozen sets of this in every school.
let's hope it's more accurate than google translate, especially considering how many region specific dialects there are for a language such as Spanish.
Can it do Pennsylvania Dutch?
Is there an early adopter version that I can scope up now
Both parties have to have both it and the app. Its essentially google voice/translate with a Bluetooth devise
Soooo cool! I could finally listen to what my parents say in Spanish if I have that!!
what are the plans for future expansion of the language capability?
The video didn't impress me much, as it is an scripted edit. Whoever wrote the article should know that translation implies written word, while a spoken word would be an interpretation. Being a Russian interpreter, I can tell you, that if Google Translate was any good, I would be out of a job... I doubt this thing is any good if they don't even call it right.
Now they need to add Romanian, Arabic and Hebrew.
Another win for Star Trek - Ensign Hoshi's universal translator ;-) :-)
Make it work for Ukrainian or Russian and I'll pay 10x as much!
So much for highly paid translators at the UN!!
I'm calling BS on this in a real-world environment. Yes, in a very quieet room with only one person speaking it should work, but I doubt it would work in a crowded French restaurant or on a busy street. And BTW, he didn't think of this idea when he met a French girl. I know that's a good story. He thought of the idea when he watched Star Trek or read pretty much any sci-fi book involving diffrent languages. Skeptical but hopeful.
Chill out, man. Of course that's not how he got the idea. It's an advertisement through which they suggest the way you could use the product. I don't think the intention was for customers to believe that anyway.
Where can I purchase this
I'm excited about this, but there are some languages which do not translate.
I have a real hard time believing this is nearly as useful as it's marketed to be, since Google Translate - and every other translator out there, for that matter - can barely translate languages into anything understandable. I call bullsh1t.

This is amazing! They need to add some more languages though.
What about russian language???
What about russian language????
You still need to speak the language to transmit anything lol
Execellent concept. Need one for Japanese and Mandarin Chinese though.
Not bad... a bit pricey though. I think a good supplement to this would be an iOS app I found called Trip Icons. Just $1 and does the job. Check it out: http://tripicons.com/
if it worked $129 would be a literal steal, have you ever priced decent in ear monitors or headphones? have a look here and you'll see quality doesn't come cheap. https://nobleaudio.co.uk/en/shop/custom/
babelfish!
I need mandarin, is going to be added anytime??
Please create arabic - german, arabic english, arabic greek .... versions for refugees!!!!
It says: "A handy app will allow you to toggle through the languages you want"
But does it tell you how to reply in the other language too?
It says it comprises of two earpieces, maybe the second one is for someone else. wouldn't be very hygienic though which is a downside
I guess you need a pair of them - one is for you, the other for the person you talk to. Either that, or there are speakers.
OMG, just sit and learn some foreign language....
Hmmm. I'm a profesional translator who uses voice-to-text software daily. I also see stuff that's been machine translated. If voice-to-text doesn't even work 100% accurately with a calibrated mike, and machine translation - even with Google's ibllions behind it - is often hillariously awful, how is a $ 129 device dever able to fulfil the promises? Dream on.
This is nice, but it'll make humans even lazier. Why learn something when I can have a babblefish?
They should come two in a pack ;)
you know this is a BS crowd funding scam, right?
Been around the world, don't speak the language But your booty don't need explaining All I really need to understand is When you talk dirty to me
How about learning the actual language.
Uhm yeah so I want to go to France for a two week holiday so I have to spend ± 3 years before that to learn the language?! You have got to be kidding me...
I am a translator and I find it offensive.
Why!? I find this as a job opportunity for you instead! This device only has a very limited number of languages, they will need translators and linguists to expand and update their softwares!
Um, why?
Yes! Enable America more in thinking knowing one language is what's best for our nation.
I'm studying Hindi and would love one if they were to add Hindi, but would still continue my studies. I want to speak Hindi and think it would help a lot in gaining fluency. Not all of us are lazy. Hindi would be my 3rd language. Yes, I'm an American.

still think the best way to cross the language barrier is to LEARN that language!
Would this device not help learn the language?
Indeed. That's the best way. But let's het real. Hoe many languages do you speak? How much time a day you dedicate yourself to it besides you daily work/study and routines? Why? Also, a short tourist or business trip does not require learning the language, that's for immigrants, international students, temporary workers and so on. Finally, like Nicholas Markusic pointed out, this may be useful for learning as well.
Ugh... Typos in a post about language learning...

Love that the two comments are exactly what I thought. Jesus that is so lazy, you wouldn t even hear her beautiful voice over that stupid robotic shit...
