The world, as of right now, is doing a lot. It is doing considerably more than was agreed upon, and nobody has been adequately compensated for the inconvenience. The news is relentless, the group chat is overwhelming, and "per my last email" messages are still being sent. It is a lot to process before lunch. Too much almost.

Which is why we have memes. Not as a solution and definitely not as a substitute for actually dealing with any of it. Just as a five-minute window where the only thing being asked of you is to scroll, recognise something true about your own existence, and feel marginally less alone in it. No news, no context, no follow-up action required. Just the good stuff, in bulk, delivered without apology.

The Political Compass sets out to collect memes that make us chuckle about politics, humble us about idiotic human behaviour, and bring us together in the face of adversity. For their relentless image curation, we want to thank them.

I consider myself quite skilled at what we used to call "google-fu". I could find products quickly and easily, even when others couldn't after hours of searching. It came in handy in my family's business (housecleaning) because occasionally our teams would break things inside a customer's home, and we would need to replace it. I was really, really good at finding the exact replacements. I didn't think about it, but my sister hasn't asked me to find a replacement for a while... and she LOVES using chatgpt. XD My job has been taken away by AI!

The numbers on political stress are, ironically, stressful. Studies consistently find that somewhere between 40% and 51% of adults experience significant anxiety directly attributable to politics. Things like the news cycle, the social division, and the elections that seem to arrive before the last one has been fully processed all contribute.

Large numbers of people are losing sleep over it. Mental health strains from political content are documented and showing no signs of improving as the information environment gets louder and the stakes feel higher with every refresh. Which makes the humble meme page something considerably more valuable than it gets credit for.

When half the adult population is experiencing burnout from simply existing in the current news cycle, a curated collection of completely unhinged, joyfully pointless, deeply relatable images is a pressure valve. So yes. Meme pages are doing the lord's work. This is stress physiology. Scroll guilt-free.

Cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone, the chemical your brain releases when it perceives a threat. The problem is that your brain processes an alarming news headline the same way it would a physical danger, which means that doomscrolling before 9 am is biologically equal to being chased by a lion.

Laughter does the opposite. It actively lowers cortisol levels, releases endorphins, and gives your nervous system permission to stand down. A meme that makes you belly laugh is, in the most literal neurological sense, the antidote to an epidemic.

This meme page shares another tool with its readers that might help combat politically induced anxiety just as much as laughs do. Ground News is a news aggregation platform that takes the already infuriating stories we see daily and tells us a little more about its leanings. Is it left, right, or centered? Are there any blind spots in the coverage?

"Ground News shows you how thousands of outlets across the political spectrum cover the same story, so you can cut through bias, spot blindspots, and stay truly informed," they claim. Maybe the key to true happiness isn't no news at all; it's simply better understanding the news we get?

…and the top of the naughty list has been revealed.

    View more comments

The English poet Thomas Gray put it best in 1742, which is impressive given that he had no idea what a news cycle was. In his poem Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, he watched schoolboys playing in blissful ignorance of the hardships adulthood would bring and concluded, in the closing lines, that "where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."

It is, in the context of the current media environment, a sentiment that has never felt more applicable. The question of whether it is actually better to simply not know what is happening in the world is one that a growing number of people are asking, and the meme page is, in its own chaotic way, a very modern answer to a very old question.

The numbers around meme consumption are mildly concerning... Some digital marketing reports show that the average millennial views somewhere between 20 and 30 memes per day (amateurs!). Gen Z consumes significantly more.

A study by Redseer Strategy Consultants found that active internet users spend an average of 30 minutes a day specifically on meme content, deliberately consuming them as a category of media in their own right. Which means that memes are not a byproduct of internet use. They are, for a significant portion of the population, the destination.

Yes. They mostly do. Almost all 'public facing' uses of AI are inappropriate and give worse results than thinking about it. When AI says 'the cat sat on the mat', it has no concept of a cat, a mat, or sitting, merely that those words go together. When AI gives an information summary, such as an essay for college, it doesn't have any understanding of context or what it is saying, just that the words go together. What you get is like a movie prop: it looks the part, but doesn't necessarily work.

Forbes reported that around 60% of meme keywords are political in nature during major political cycles. So while cute kittens and gaming memes still occupy a good portion of the meme-verse, it is now politically driven enough to make us pay attention.

Interestingly, Republicans appear in memes twice as often as Democrats, with Donald Trump holding the undisputed title of most memed politician in history by a margin that no other public figure has come close to challenging. No comment...

Globally, the search term "meme" is searched twice as frequently as "Jesus" — with a search frequency ratio of 93 to 43. The humble internet meme, a format that began with a badly translated video game and a cat with Impact font, has out-searched the central figure of the world's largest religion.

The only countries where Jesus maintains the search advantage are the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Venezuela, Spain, South Africa, and Portugal, all holding ratios that favour him, but by margins that are, in some cases, narrowing.

At the opposite end of the spectrum sit Vietnam and Poland, where memes lead Jesus 96 to 4 and 92 to 8 respectively. Poland, notably, is one of the most devoutly Catholic countries in Europe. Maybe they just know everything there is to know about the big guy, and need Futurama Fry to lighten the mood a little? Honestly, anyone can do with a good meme after doomscrolling through the Book of Revelation.

So, whether you consume memes as your main political (not recommended) or just to take a little break from reality, they have become an unavoidable reality of our daily lives. Because let's face it, life seems to be on a runaway train with the tracks ending at the edge of a cliff. So we might as well get our laughs in, right?

Do you think that dealing with reality through memes is a constructive coping mechanism? Or do we need professional help... Tell us in the comments!

There is something so familiar about this pose. I would be betting money that this is a kid with ASD, and, assuming Renaissaince art isn't his current special interest (in which case he'd probably be telling his family and possibly random museum patrons everything they could ever want to know about Rembrandt, and more), this seems like an acceptable way for the parents to get to do something that matters to them on vacation, too. Assuming the sound is muted, of course.
