Being a programmer is a serious and legit career, even if our grandparents think that we’re just “playing games over there in front of a screen.” That’s a real sentence my brother, who's probably been coding since he was 12, heard from our grandparents. In reality, being a programmer is meticulous and hard work, as 42% of developers' time is spent fixing bad code.
It also comes with its own brand of humor, one that people in other careers might not understand. That’s why Bored Panda is dedicating a list to “Programmer Humor,” a subreddit where programmers and software developers share memes, jokes, and other funny and relatable content. And if you’re thrown by the no-spaces grammar, this one might not be for you.

There are some things that non-programmers wouldn’t understand. Just like in many professions and hobbies, certain bits of inside knowledge and jokes might confuse outsiders. Such might be the case with the "spaces vs tabs" debate among many coders. Some use spaces when they're coding; others use tabs, but there's an interesting statistic.
Those programmers who use spaces earn more than those who use tabs. According to the Stack Overflow 2017 Developer Survey, developers who use spaces had a median yearly salary of $59,140, while their peers who used tabs earned a median of $43,750.

If you’re a programmer who uses tabs, don’t feel like you have to switch to spaces. Although correlation doesn’t always mean causation, there are a few theories exploring why space users earn more than tab users.
Data scientist Dave Robinson theorized that it’s simply because more variables coincide with space or tab preference. For example, developers working in lower-GDP-per-capita countries tend to use tabs more often and have lower salaries on average. Programming language also matters: mobile developers are more likely to use tabs, while DevOps developers prefer spaces, and mobile developers tend to earn less than DevOps engineers.

Clean code is a mark of a good developer and a daily aspiration for every programmer. Ironically, programmers don’t spend as much time writing code as they do reading old code and fixing mistakes. We already mentioned that developers spend about half of their workday spotting and fixing mistakes, but it might be shocking how little typing a programmer usually does.
Like Robert C. Martin, aka Uncle Bob, wrote in Clean Code, “the ratio of time spent reading versus writing is well over 10 to 1. We are constantly reading old code as part of the effort to write new code. …[Therefore,] making it easy to read makes it easier to write.”

😞 Thankfully in the EU a lot of "turned on by default" isn't allowed. So instead it's a set of dialogue boxes to nag you to enable this rubbish.
And I'd like to know - and this counts for those "consent to cookies" ones as well - if you say yes, will it still pop up a nag every X days/hours/minutes? If not, why the does it do it if you say no? Which part of no don't they understand? No means no and not f*****g maybe. 😡

Still, that doesn’t mean that programmers don’t need energy. Judging by their caffeine consumption habits, they need a lot of it. As someone who grew up with two gamer brothers, I know a thing or two about excessive energy drink consumption. It seems that programmers have a similar dependency on caffeine: in 2024, 83.6% of programmers in the U.S. reported drinking coffee daily.

Programmers also have a strong affinity for dark mode, as 64% of respondents in the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2024 said they prefer to work in dark mode. Granted, others do too: 81.9% of mobile users choose dark mode for daily use. It's been proven that using dark mode reduces eye strain, saves your device's battery, and helps your eyes focus faster — we see bright accents on dark backgrounds two or three times faster than the same accents on white.

I get it, but there is an art to prompting. I got much more out of AI once I spent some time learning prompting techniques. I think attaching the word, "Engineer" to it puts people off maybe.

It hasn't got to me yet, and quite frankly, I don't see how it can. I make physical things that make or alter other physical things.

🤦 I have always written my own HTML by hand. I did try a few automated tools that were quite nice (WYSIWYG!), but the HTML generated by them made my brain tear itself out of my head and repeatedly throw itself at the window in a desperate hope to smash through the glass...

Years ago, to get a project out the door, management offered $20 for dinner if you stayed late. After two weeks of unpaid overtime, I decided it was only fair. I went and collected $20. Three days later, found out management was upset with me. They expected me to go buy dinner and return the change. Overtime stopped.

Just had this on a call with an irate customer after go live. Well we were told when we signed that XYZ would be available and this would be a custom experience. They were sold the cheapest service option. Now I have to fix a project ( that I wasn't even on ) and will get blamed for blowing the budget.

I'd start with elephants. COMPUTER SCIENTISTS hunt elephants by exercising Algorithm A: 1. Go to Africa. 2. Start at the Cape of Good Hope. 3. Work northward in an orderly manner, traversing the continent alternately east and west. 4. During each traverse pass, a. Catch each animal seen. b. Compare each animal caught to a known elephant. c. Stop when a match is detected. EXPERIENCED COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS modify Algorithm A by placing a known elephant in Cairo to ensure that the algorithm will terminate. ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE PROGRAMMERS prefer to execute Algorithm A on their hands and knees.
