Americans Shared 33 Things Other People Need To Know About What’s Going On In The US
The United States is currently in disarray. Many are unhappy with the current administration’s policies, particularly on immigration, healthcare, federal spending, and foreign policy, among others.
But unless you live in the country, you don’t get to see what goes on beyond media reports. So, in a recent Reddit thread, people openly discussed some pressing issues they believe the rest of the world should be made aware of.
Scroll down to see what came up, and feel free to join in on the discussion through the comments section below.

What's going on in America is a lot of stuff that is reminiscent of late 1920s/early 1930s Germany.
Oh come on, it's not like you have some sort of secret police that doesn't have to justify their action, can strike anytime, anywhere against pretty much anyone, travels in secret vehicles and takes you away into inhuman prisons with little to no legal recourse...
You're forgetting the threats of territorial expansion. I don't want an Anschluss Kanadische, you all better go out and vote in these midterms or they're might not be a Canada or a Greenland left, and you'll be fighting an insurgency while saddled with debt you cannot afford.
Load More Replies...Said by a person that has absolutely no clue about history or about current political affairs. Sad part is that this person is allowed to vote
Yes, but we've been telling the Americans this for the past 5 years and apparently nobody cared much about it. If anything, I got replies like "You're hysterical", or "Shut up, N**i" (because I'm German). And so far, the USA has not White Rose (aka resistance), no Stauffenberg - what do they expect, for others to come and solve their problem?
Poland is safe for now. He's too interested in Colombia and Greenland at the moment.
Load More Replies...A really dumb fake federal agency called DOGE took a hacksaw to all real federal US government agencies and fired a bunch of federal employees. Now those positions are being rehired by private companies as contractor jobs and the position is being paid more money. Thus, costing the government more money. DOGE was an absolute scam and a way to privatize government jobs.
During the time Doge was active, the national debt rose by over two trillion dollars. I mean, that's f*cking wild. In less than a year, the Trump administration ADDED almost $3 trillion to the debt. Why? For what purpose? Because I promise the American people aren't seeing any benefit at all.
One of the things was that they got their hands on the government databases
They had to do that so that the newly unemployed would now seek employment as ICE officers. Real f*****g heroes, do you not see the ads on national t.v? /s
It's funny how this idiot thinks that a president that was in office for less than a month can actually raise the debt. Only the two houses can raise the debt. The president can only sign or veto spending bills. Too bad this idiot ,with no concept of how the government works, can mouth off like they know anything. Very sad
I thought Project 2025 was a conspiracy theory until I read it. It's not, unfortunately. They've already implemented about 50% of it, and it's honestly terrifying. If this administration isn't stopped soon, we're completely screwed. If you're not a rich white person, you're seriously screwed. Or white and poor.
Can you get me to Sweden? Oh, what does it even matter now. That piece of shít has fúcked the world. I am so very despondent.
Load More Replies...As a white person adopted at birth into a Hispanic family (all of whom live in Southern California or Texas), I expect every single day to wake up to hear that some member of my family has been taken in by ICE. All of my currently-living family members were born in the US, but we've obviously seen that that is NO protection. It is terrifying to be so scared for your family members while simultaneously knowing that your OWN skin and hair color will protect you.
If Elaine Miles (played Marilyn on Northern Exposure) can be questioned and detained by ICE, that just shows that ICE are too stupid to know what they are looking for and are going strictly on pigmentation.
Load More Replies...If a group of liberals formulated a plan to dismantled democracy and take over the government they would have been thrown in prison for sedition and conspiracy to overthrow the USA. But that is exactly what the Heritage Foundation has done and is actively completing. We are unlikely to have any semblance of democracy left in a couple of years even if democrats get re-elected. The Heritage Foundation has been planning this since they advised Ronald Reagan.
The bits I read leading up to the election sounded very familiar because I've been hearing it for 30 years.
History books 2060 will record that an emergency prompted by a false flag operation prevented midterm voting...
A lot of people would deny it, but being a white cis-heterosexual person helps immensely even when you're under the poverty line.

The Epstein files is a really big deal: Absolutely nobody will be held to real account for decades of crimes against over a thousand victims.
We're all the way in a dictatorship. That's the part people are missing. We're not sliding, we slid. It happened.
There is an aspect of Epstein that terrifies me: People like him are inevitable as long as there are ultra-rich people around. People with too much money run out of things to buy too quickly. They bore of things they can easily get, and buying "normal" things is beneath them - what's the use of being rich if you live like a normo? So they start to crave hard-to-get, forbidden things. Hunt endangered species, lust for s*x with "inappropriate partners" - just do things because they shouldn't. We seriously underestimate the dangers of true decadence.
It's a two tiered legal system. They had Epstein in 2009 but he got a sweetheart plea deal.

They will be allowed to live out their lives in luxury and fun because our society doesn't give a real fvck about rap.ed girls, if the ra.pists are rich and preferably white. We should burn these men alive, but THEN the police would wake up and come after us. Because harming a ra.pist is worse than ra.ping a child.
The complete erosion of trust in science based medicine. And the utter lack of unbiased main stream media reporting. These are not great signs for the future of a democracy… we’ve seen where that road goes….

Data center going to steal your water and electricity. Guess who will pay? You. They will get handouts from your wallet.
I don't think it will. What will happen is fundamentally different computational models will come out that think like ai better than traditional CPU/GPU models do at a fraction the energy cost. Lots of promise in neuromorophic computing for much of what we use AI for (pattern recognition and visual inputs)

We've just seen a white elephant article on BP, right?Mass producing junk that ends up on dump sites faster than you can say "trendy", buying new devices all the time, streaming and being connected 24/7... We are doomed. What is worse, we've doomed so many other species as well...
In Virginia, which is seeing the largest number of data centers being built, the Governor already gave them a tax exemption through 2050.
But the local city counsels approve the zoning permits, and the local people approve of their decisions by voting for them
I would warn generally about all of it.
I’m visiting the US right now, my home, after being abroad for 11 of the last 15 years. I have not lived here since 2019. Believe me when I tell you that it has never felt to me more like a society in decline. Prices are ridiculous for everything. American advertising is this bizarre cavalcade of dystopia that feels like it’s simultaneously in deep denial about and aggressively selling itself. Everyone on the street looks fat, sick, or fake. My close friend recently had an ICE raid happen at the Home Depot around the corner from their house. Commerce seems to have devolved into clusters of new construction with the same 12 corporate businesses, surrounded on all sides by crumbling old shuttered buildings. To repeat— EVERYTHING is ridiculously expensive. The average item costs more than twice what it used to only a few years ago. It seems impossible that people can survive here, let alone thrive. If America was my cousin and I was visiting, I’d be telling my other relatives in hushed whispers about how concerned I was.
According to my dad's friend, they carry whistles for the raiders. They used to have an app before the government shoved their hands up the system
Man wants chaos. In fact, he's got to have it. Depression, strife, riots, m****r. All this dread. We're irresistibly drawn to that almost orgiastic state created out of death and destruction. It's in all of us. We revel in it. Sure, the media tries to put a sad face on these things, painting them up as great human tragedies; but we all know the function of the media has never been to eliminate the evils of the world, no! Their job is to persuade us to accept those evils and get used to living with them. The powers that be want us to be passive observers. And they haven't given us any other options outside the occasional, purely symbolic, participatory act of voting. "You want the puppet on the right, or the puppet on the left?"
This is the first time in recorded history and a mostly usa centered event, where the supposed "poor" are obese or morbidly obese, and you can't blame anyone other than those that put the junk food in their own mouths and their children's mouths

He's not saving for retirement at all (he can't, he doesn't make enough to live on) and his government pension won't be close to enough to live on... I'm so worried about him. Hopefully his kids end up in a place where they can help him out.

More people than you think are struggling with getting fresh clean water. Trump vetoed a bill to bring clean water to southeastern Colorado in retaliation for keeping one of his allies in jail/possibly against Boebert for going against him. The Navajo Nation was basically told it has no right to have water provided to it. Flint took over 10 years to replace the lead pipes. Climate change will be making things worse in the southwest.
Clean water will be the true challenge of the 21st century. You can't live without it. Neither can plants or animals. Just in the last century, massive area's of once fertile ground has been lost to desertification. Millions of acres and it's not turning around.
Trump has already told his followers that Canada (British Columbia) has a “Giant TAP” that we use to deny California water. He WILL go after Greenland for their resources (now fully emboldened by his Venezuelan conquest for his billionaire oil bodies) than us. I can see the Great Lake being drained in the next 40 years.
Water is needed for the Giant Databases being built in the desert to keep the AI centers cool. It takes massive amounts of energy. F**k people though./👺
JD Vance is Machiavellian AF. Yall are focusing on Trump and not this John Wayne Gacy looking guy consolidating his power as he comes for the throne.
I have a hard time believing JD "Jorkin DaPeanus" Vance has the intelligence to be Machiavellian, but I could be wrong. He honestly reminds me a lot of an orange cat: no braincell, nothing behind those big blue eyes (while simultaneously being nowhere near as cute or lovable as a cat.) Again, I could be wrong, but I think he's actually a dolt. If the Orange Thing were to drop dead and The Couchfúcker took over, I think he'd become a mouthpiece for the party nutbags and not a leader in his own right. Not that that's BETTER than being Machiavellian, mind you.
Actually, this annoys me about political experts and analysts in the media outside the US: When Trump does something strange or says something blatantly stupid, they will fabulate and twist logic beyond its breaking point to uncover the possible motive, hidden scheme or brilliant tactic truly behind that action. Never once do they consider that a man who once altered a weather chart with a sharpie to avoid admitting he was wrong really has no hidden depth to him. Just admit that the emperor has no clothes and really is just petty and stupid.
Load More Replies...JD is as fake as you can find. He's changed his name twice. James David Bowman wasn't good enough for him. Yeah I dead named rich powerful white guy. Anyone want to do something about it?
Yeah, no, JD Vance has nothing like the celebrity that the orange one has, and the river is turning on the orange one as we speak. Gas prices jumped 50 cents a gallon locally, literally overnight. The mega hardcore idiots will always be trumpy's, but his base is cracking under the pressure of price increases. That stink is sticking to the already unpopular Vance.
Scares me what will happen if he DOESN'T get elected. Civil war? People need to plan right now to get out of our country. I called January 6th before it happened. Luckily it didn't go that far
Millions of people figure out January 6. There was a massive internet push to keep sane people away so the MAGAts had no one there to blame.

The USPS changed postmarking rules, instead of mail being postmarked when received by an individual postal office, now the dating will occur when mail is processed by a sorting machine, which will result in a possible discrepancy. This will primarily affect tax returns and mail in ballots(if these are mailed on tax day/Election Day respectively they may be considered late or the ballot would be invalidated as they would be recorded by the post hub next day). A really minor change that could have big consequences April 15th or Election Day.
Take your mail in ballot to your closest drop off box. Get your taxes in before April 10th.
Taxes? Psh. I paid those last year! I have to do it again??
Load More Replies...This isn't the only bit of legislation that will affect voting. If the SAVE act passes the Senate, married women will likely have to present a passport or an enhanced driver's license to be able to vote. This will disenfranchise millions of voters, especially those who have lower incomes and cannot afford a passport.
People who change their names. Majority affected will be married women, but not all.
Load More Replies...so now elections can be influenced by simply adjusting the timing of mail processing... ? :-/
And guess what states uses mail in ballots the most ?
Load More Replies...The mail has been postmarked by sorting machines for over twenty years. What has changed is that the mail is not being put on the machine for at least one day and sometimes 2-3 days. It used to be required that it was processed on the machine the day that it was received.
Take your mail into the post office to the postal clerk to get hand stamped.
When I read that I thought it is really a no brainer, I know if it was a time sensitive matter, I'm hauling my @ss inside for the hand stamp. On the other hand, I know people who have not graced the inside of a post office or bank in 20 years.
Load More Replies...Work for an accounting firm. Found out last year, after responding to a few late notices for clients, that most of the certified mail we sent out was considered late because the local PO no longer scans the barcode when we take the mail to the window. The amount of wealth being concentrated in very few hands. I don't think the average person comprehends the mind boggling numbers that are being accrued, and the consequences of that.
External observer. I suspect that none of the hands in which the greatest wealth is held has been made public. Eg. Let's take this 100 million dollars of weapons, mark it up to a billion and give it to Ukraine. Somebody pockets the difference.

Yeah. It's a digital world now, but there are literal toddlers learning the negative behaviours because of older siblings and no parental intervention
This past year (2025 - our school year starts in January) I had the worst class of my 34-year teaching career. It doesn't help that I was going through chemo, an op and radiation at the time, but ALL the teachers in my grade complained about the behaviour. At least our school does not allow cellphones, otherwise we'd never get anything done.

Food is a lot more expensive than what they led on the news. Yes, some “luxury goods” such as televisions, PlayStations and iPhones are still around their regular prices, but real food, housing and medical care have skyrocketed. And somehow television is still under this illusion that because luxury items are still low the economy is good, when it’s actually not.
"Real food."? USA doesnt know the meaning of the word healthy for food. The food there is fatty, sugary, processed junk. We asked for some butter in a hotel restaurant, and got a lump of white fat which was inedible. That was one of many "foods" we couldn't eat.

This is one of the most important posts. These things have slowly crippled us to the point where I don't know if we can recover.
The slow and steady loss of owning anything and renting it all. A fifty year mortgage is a lifelong rental. Even the performance of our cars is managed by subscribing to certain features that are included when the car is purchased but then, after a year or so, only available by paying a monthly fee. Software is now by subscription. In time, the working class will own nothing.
Glad I bought my home when I did. A fifty year mortgage is insane. 25 -30 at most. If fifty years is what you need to afford your mortgage, buy a smaller house

Nothing much is being taught in schools. Every school has mentally ill children in almost every classroom. They scream, throw fits, etc. Even if a teacher is smart enough to find ways to work around the poor curriculum and micromanaging in most schools, the behaviors of many of the children just don't allow teaching to really happen. There is so much wasted time and money!!
My wife works in a school. Those kids that lash out are being failed by their parents because they are in denial and will not accept that their kids have extra challenges and need extra help.
On the other hand, my daughter has Tourette's Syndrome. My wife has taken training from the Tourette's Association to educate teachers how to work with students who have Tourette's. In 8th grade, the principal of the school refused to allow my wife to present the information. The teachers would just have my daughter stand outside the class when her tics flared up. She failed many courses that year. The following years we got her into a better school where she won the student of the year award! There are good teachers and there are bad teachers.
Load More Replies...Let's not even mention the massive burden of paperwork on teachers for all the kids with IEPs (Individual Education Plan: for students with learning/physical/mental health differences). My husband has 150 students. About 1/3 have IEPs. He's required to fill out a detailed form on each IEP student weekly. Not to mention attending IEP meetings. Not sure when he's supposed to plan lessons or grade papers.
And in South Africa they make us fill them in by hand - I suppose to prevent us copying and pasting the comments.

They certainly don't teach geography.. on quiz shows, Americans are clueless about other countries, and not much better with their own.
This is very true. I worked in a therapeutic home for displaced children. Or in other words, I worked in residential with violent children. There aren't any special schools for them. The bus picks them up and they go to school with your kids, because we no longer have special schools or classes for them. If they destroy a classroom, hit other kiddos, push a bus driver down the stairs, they might be suspended for a couple days, but then they are right back in public school. The law says they have to go to school, but there's no longer any accommodation for kiddos with serious issues. And there's not enough beds for teens with serious issues. Parents can be begging for help for their teen that has mental health problems and not get any at all. Think about it. Most insurance covers a small number of mental health doctor's office visits a year, and that's it. Not even enough for once a week for a year, let alone residential for serious violence issues.
The mental health problems are with the parents. I'd like to see at least 3/4s of all American children taken from their useless parents and put into orphanages. The kids might have a chance doing that.
I worked in residential with violent kids. That's what "orphanages" are these days. I've seen parents give up their parental rights, and make their child a ward of the state, because the parent's health insurance won't cover the kind of help their children need. Then those violent children get picked up by the bus and go to school with your children. Because we no longer have any special schools for them. I don't blame the parents anymore. If the kid is spoiled, sure, parent's fault. If the child has ODD, there's very little the parents can do without support.

High paying white collar US jobs are getting offshored to India and other countries - including jobs that deal with sensitive HR, accounting, banking and computer security data. All of this data can be more easily stolen by adversarial nations, and the U.S. has no recourse.
And none of the American politicians GAF or want to try to stop the damage that hollowing out the middle class will do to the economy.
I'd be more worried about a***e by your own government, because in truth most "adversarial nations" don't care enough about you to a***e your data against you. The worst they do is sell it to whoever wants it - but would you really trust the US not to do the same?

Tipping culture is only getting further out of hand. I’m fine with tipping but my god, some places take tipping 15% as a slap in the face.
Also, please normalize not tipping garbage service. Some places genuinely do not deserve a tip and I shouldn’t feel as bad as their service was for not rewarding it.
The way the last paragraph was worded, I was really confused at first about who was regularly tipping their garbage collectors. 🤣🤣 Although, to be fair, they probably deserve it in many cases.

It’s still legal to pay people with significant disabilities a fraction of the minimum wage. Nearly 40,000 Americans are paid subminimum wages because of their disability. They’re timed for their work, then their pay is docked, for an average hourly wage of $3.34 an hour and as low as $0.05 an hour.
How? I still don't understand how tips can be legally used to cover paying less than minimum. How can you pay somone less than minimum for a hired job? Not the same if the person is volunteering, which i see locally quite a bit.
We had a facility close in the last 5 or so years that employed the emotionally/mentally challenged. They voted to cut the funding for these places in Mich., ours was called MOARC. I personally know of 2 who lost their jobs. I urged their caregivers to file unemployment claims. In the late 80's, I worked for a company that used them to sort different sizes of foam sheets (automotive industry) that were returned to us so they wouldn't be landfilled. Exploitative? Maybe, but it gave those folks sense of contribution.
Bees are dying at an alarming rate.
I'd say that honey bees are at much lesser risk because of people make money out of them. But in general that solitary bees are in much greater risk because people doesn't see that make money of them/they dont produce honey. So I'd say its more important to protect them with habitats (sand-nests and holes in wood nests), and food (native pollen at most, but also nectar)!!
The typical span of a reserve currency is 80-100 years. And the US dollar has been the reserve currency for 80 years and at this stage will experience increased inflation until it is replaced with other currency, at which time the value will be decimated. And that's when China hits Taiwan. Or vice versa. China hits Taiwan and USA uses as excuse to " secure" Greenland.

My ex is Chinese. He was born here in America, but his parents are immigrants (Northern China and Taiwan.) Ex has family in Taiwan. I learned, over the 24 years that we were together, about the horrible things that China has done to Taiwan and to the Taiwanese people. It's no surprise that my ex's parents fled to the US (back in the 70s, before it was as insane as it is now.)
I wouldn't be surprised if Trump made a deal like the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with Putin and Xi
But will America be dragged in? I predict it will suddenly truly become "America First" and no getting involved in foreign wars. Once the deals to share Taiwanese tech are made.
Yes, we most likely will be dragged into it because we have a lot of military and economic interests in the south China sea and that choke point that Taiwan is really close to is actually limiting China's expansion. Also, there's a big beef between Japan and China too and we are close allies with Japan. Short version is: because we are not allies with China, everyone else is a strategic interest to the US around the south China sea because it helps keep China in check.

They want sick codependent people in need of medicine, surgery etc. it’s a game. Everyday food, drinks & products such as shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, skincare, makeup, deodorant, toothpaste etc are loaded with harmful ingredients that cause cancer, endocrine disruptions, & have adverse effects on blood, organs & nervous systems. It’s engineered by design for population control & to enrich the pharmaceutical companies. They calculate how long they can poison us on average. Most Americans aren’t aware of the scam & can’t even pronounce half the ingredients in everyday things. Let alone realize how they harm your health. America doesn’t run on Dunkin. It runs on greed & sick people. No other country does this. They have universal healthcare, holistic approaches, prioritize holidays/rest, & ban thousands of ingredients allowed here.
I am reminded during the Obama Admin, a proposal was floated to allow meat processors to 'self certify' and eliminate USDA oversight. As I told my Rep and Sens "so the proposal is to push good/bad decision making down to the slaughterhouse floor, where their jobs are on the line for 'too much scrap'?" Glad that has not come to pass, yet.
Functionally it has. The USDA inspection aspect has been decimated.

Dihydrogen Monoxide is deadly and the government is literally pumping it into our houses!!!!
This will be unpopular here..
But the sheer scale of Migrant fraud is so mind boggling that you would think its propoganda.
This side of the internet likes to defer blame or do whataboutis when its brought up, i have no idea why they feel the need to defend it.
one example, Illinois alone, Indians are 2% yet are 42% of small business loans (about 5 million each), and contiously use loan assumptions to defer to other indian community members endlessly to never pay back loans, essentially stealing public funds.
This is just 1 community, 1 sector, 1 state.
Unpopular because it's racist nonsense. If you want to look at Illinois specifically, non white low income communities actually receive far less loan funding in proportion to business ownership than white communities. And the poster clearly has no idea what a small business loan is, or how it works
Odd that you don't also highlight employer fraud regarding immigrant workers. Our domestic slaughterhouses ALONE are populated by majority migrant labor. Not to mention agriculture.
1 Youtube video. Nothing in the official documentation supports the idea of $5 million loans being routinely issued to any group. Search for “Illinois Gives 42% Small Business Loans to Indians?” if you want the source of this nonsense.
Look at the food stamp mess in Minnesota. That was run by a WHITE woman, an American citizen.
Well, I'm feeling sick to my stomach now. Going to lay down for a while...
Seriously. Hi Iowa, I'm in Chicago. They just cut off funding to childcare and social services here in Illinois and in California, New York, Minnesota, and Colorado. Yay.

The U.S. citizens used to be healthily cynical about all politicians but respected the position of President. Now the politicians have divided the citizens into them and us, created hatred and fanaticism, the country no longer trusts itself and politicians can do as they please without recourse. Soon we will rename you, you’ll just become States, you aren’t United anymore.
The answer is Trump, MAGA and all of the cult that are destroying our country and world order. This American apologizes and we hope to be over this nightmare soon.
Don't stop protesting and doing something to stop the madman in office. All we see from the outside looking in, it Feces Fingers getting away with absolutely everything and anything and no one doing a d**n thing about it.
As an outsider, about half of those are new to me. Thanks BP. Re immigration, I know a women with Dansh citizenship, a student visa, and American children. Who has recently been kicked out of the USA with her children because her husband died.
I'm from MO, and that overripe con-quat can go rot on his branch in the greenhouse. The only thing that worthless piece of fruit is good for is compost. (No hate to real kumquats.)
He got less than half of the popular vote. His claims of a "mandate" are laughable.
